Non Men Loving Non Men
A survey on lesbianism and gender was conducted from early July to late August of this year. It was for any lesbian under the genderqueer umbrella or who had a complicated experience with gender. It received 211 responses.
One question read "How do you feel about the common lesbian definition 'non men loving non men?'" and participants were asked to rate it from one ("hate it") to five ("love it"). This definition will be abbreviated to NMLNM going forward.
For the purposes of this analysis, numbers in the range [1, 3) are considered to feel negatively about the definition, and numbers in the range (3, 5] are considered to feel positive about the definition.
The overall average was 2.838, which is considered to be feeling slightly negative about this definition. The standard deviation was 1.384.
Participants were also asked if they considered themself to be cis, and if they considered themself to be trans. The options given were "yes," "no," "unsure," "sometimes," "somewhat," and "prefer not to say" for each of those two questions. These responses were then compared to responses to the NMLNM question.
Opinions were generally close to the overall average, and all were within one standard deviation.
The group that felt most positive about the NMLNM definition were those who did not consider themselves to be trans, with an average of 3.217 (standard deviation 1.391).
The only other group to feel positively about the definition were those who considered themselves somewhat cis, with an average of 3.107 (standard deviation 1.396).
The group that felt most negatively about the definition were those who sometimes considered themselves to be trans, with an average of 2.333 (standard deviation 1.231).
A later question allowed participants to select gender labels. 51 people identified as multigender. Of those multigender participants, the average opinion on the NMLNM definition was 2.255.
In conclusion, the genderqueer lesbians surveyed felt, on average, slightly negative about the definition of lesbianism "non men loving non men." When divided by gender, the only groups to feel positive about this definition were "not trans" and "somewhat cis" participants. Multigender participants felt especially negative about this definition.
While the sample size is not sufficient to draw conclusions about lesbians as a whole, it is reasonable to conclude that "non men loving non men" is not a perfect definition of lesbianism.

I'm tired of the people who say: "Lesbians are women who love women"
I am not a woman.
I am a lesbian.
Stop erasing non-binary identities from lesbianism.

STOP SAYING “NON-MEN” AND “NON-WOMEN”
Key words so this shows up on the Google algorithm: "non men loving non men" "non men attracted to non men"
This is the only time I’ll say this, but queer people online need to stop saying “non-men” and “non-women” these phrases create yet another binary and expects everyone to fit in a neat little box. Worse still, these phrases are inherently antiblack, homophobic, and dehumanizing. Not to mention that “nonmen” makes trans/nby people into “other” and ends up centering men anyway. SOURCES (alt text included)
Tumblr media
“The term nonmen has remained something of a battleground within feminist theory and practice for quite some time as a label built on a negation and hence as always reactive towards what is being negated—which, in turn, remains the norm as what is being resisted. The term also makes explicit the painful friction between woman-centered feminism and trans-inclusive feminism, in relation to which binary gender has never made sense. As a point of departure for a political movement or event, the category aims to include not only cis women but equally trans and nonbinary bodies positioned as other in relation to the white, straight male norm”

Why can the Tik Tock sapphic community be so toxic? I keep seeing lesbians and bisexual sapphics pinning against each other, and I don’t understand. I would just like to kiss all sapphics on the lips and cuddle them and listen to them talk about the things they love.

Ok I'm confused. Is lesbian in reference to
Cis women loving cis women
Women (trans or cis) loving women
Non men loving non men
Non men loving anyone
Women/femme aligned individuals loving women/femme aligned individuals
Or another definition I haven't seen?
Also if the answer includes only feminine people, what about he/him or they/them lesbians? What about trans men? If I'm not mistaken pronouns dont always mean gender, so why is there "discourse" around who can identify as lesbian or not? And are lesbian and sapphic interchangable?
I'm seeing lots of different definitions and I'm not sure which is what. Sorry thank you

Quickly reminder:
Non-binary lesbians are valid, afab AND amab.
Lesbianism is not women loving women. It's non-men loving non-men.
Don't erase us from lesbianism.

If someone says "this rigid definition of a label doesn't account for the complexity of gender" and your reaction is to say "well the label is perfect and your gender is wrong" I think you have failed to understand queerness.
