The script: Everything is Somewhat Repaired: Howdy Partner When I was first dating Jane I called her my girlfriend. Girlfriend sounded teenage and crush-y, like the person who has the other straw in a milkshake.

Girlfriend was cute but then I realised I wasn't a boyfriend. I was still mostly being read as a man so I switched to calling her my "partner". It sounded more grown up and it also sounded a lot gayer.

"Partner" made us somehow equally un-gendered. I secretly enjoyed the confusion when people assumed I was a gay man and then found out my partners name was Jane.

I think I was happier with it being confusing. Something people couldn't put their finger on, rather than something they were just plain wrong about.

Now most people read me as (an usual) woman I've started using "girlfriend" again. It's cute, gayer than ever and tastes like milkshake.
