queer atla headcanons
aka me, a bisexual nonbinary mass of flesh, testing my gaydar
Aang: pansexual, goes by he/they, assumes everyone is pan unless given an indication otherwise, audibly gasped when Tenzin came out as straight, constantly argues with Katara over which flag (bi or pan) is prettier
Katara: bisexual and demisexual, she/her, came out to Aang while they were engaged by saying "Aang... I like boys and girls" and to this day has not gotten over the fact that he responded, "yeah ofc, doesn't everyone?", only identifies as bi because she doesn't like the pan flag's yellow
Sokka: bisexual, Zuko was his bi awakening, deals with some internalized biphobia poor bby but works through it eventually, bonded a lot with Katara over their sexuality crises
Suki: they/she but still considers themself cis, aggressively bisexual and poly-questioning, takes offense to being called an ally, she and Sokka facepainted each other's cheeks with the bi flag for their first pride parade and it is still one of their most cherished memories <3
Toph: goes by she/they mainly, doesn't care a ton about labels but identifies as ace and pan, knows every gay bar in the United Republic and drags Sokka to them often (Suki highly encourages this), uses neopronouns when they feel like it
Zuko: bisexual, so so so much internalized homophobia from the Fire Nation but he also works through it, comes out to Mai first after a few months of internal and her response is just "cool," had a gender crisis for a while there but is 99% sure he is cis... probably
Mai: queer but doesn't want to put a specific label on it, Ty Lee sees auras but Mai sees Gay^TM and is as a result never surprised when ppl come out, holes herself up in the palace every pride month (bc Zuko did declare it to be a thing after the war) bc of all the colors
Azula: thought she was bi at first but realizes she was a lesbian in denial when she gets the healing arc she deserved, calls everyone into the royal meeting room to say, "I am a lesbian" and the resounding response is "Yes aren't you and Ty Lee dating???", also takes offense to be calling an ally after she accepts her sexuality, spirits help you if you make a bigoted comment in her presence bc she is the embodiment of queer wrath
Ty Lee: lesbian, goes by she/her but is fine with any pronouns, claims to have a gaydar through auras but everyone knows that Mai helps her out, helps Azula come to terms with her sexuality and they are the most adorable gfs after Azula's healing arc, talks to Bosco abt her girl problems (and he is always very understanding)
feel free to disagree or agree with me but these are just my personal opinions and takes on each of the characters!

7, 14, 21, and any one you wanna answer but haven't for the violence
7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
Probably Kya. I didn’t see or have any problem with her in the show. she seems cool. But with the Kya/Lin ship, it’s like how I said in this ask with how Korra and Asami are put in masculine/feminine roles in their ship. I’ve found that happening with them, too, and often people will treat Linzin as comphet and I honestly can’t cope (lol) or get with that HC. To each their own, but separating myself from that side of the fandom has helped.
14. That one thing you see in fics all the time?
This will be a repeat from this ask, but villainizing of certain characters without a legitimate reason for the sake of pushing a shipping agenda. The hate on these characters that’s OOC spills out into fandom calling them all these nasty names. If the people in fandom refreshed themselves on show, they may see the hate is baseless.
Guys, close the fic, stop drafting the hate rant you’re about to post, unclench your jaw, and consider rewatching the show or go outside. Either or at this point.
21. Part of canon you think is overhyped
Probably the Linzin breakup.
In the show, Lin was able to make light of it when she said, “You should have seen Air Temple Island after Tenzin broke up with me.”
Now the details of their relationship and breakup are left up in the air but let’s imagine this:
Being in a long term relationship with someone you’ve grown up with. This person was someone you’ve developed with over the years from friends to lovers and you could have likely imagined a life with.
Then, all of that is ripped away when they break up with you for someone significantly younger, allegedly his “soulmate” who stuck out their chin to confess. An outsider of a relationship who came in with the promise of being better.
That hurts.
Lin destroying ATI in the breakup should be more than the audience going, “Ooh, way to be a badass earth bender, Lin. Tear it all up!”
That energy came from a place of hurt, betrayal, and not feeling like you’re ever going to be enough for anybody.
*Now, this comes with the huge caveat we cannot do completely fair comparisons of the two ships, since that would involve considerations of timelines and how Linzin being endgame from the start would have impacted their lives.
Still overhyped, regardless.
Oh I love that last one! I’ll go with 24. Topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
Korra and Asami’s sexualities. OMG you guys! They are bisexual. An attraction to someone regardless of gender. They can date each other, yes. BUT—
They can date other women. They can date men. They can date nonbinary people. Crazy concept, right? Apparently.
All of those and then some are valid shipping options. There is ZERO need to come for a creator for not wanting to put Korra and Asami together. There is actually zero need to go and hate on a creator point blank, but I digress.
Also just because a ship is canon, doesn’t make it superior. It is only one of infinite possibilities. That is putting too much weight in the writers’ decisions in their storyline with the endgame ship.
Thanks for the asks!

ok umm deleted my first post like a minute after posting because i started panicking and had to type it out again because i didn’t save anything like the dumbass i am, but here it is again 😭
so anyways
nonbinary tenzin!!!
(i’ll be using they/them pronouns for tenzin in this)
katara and aang are trans as well. katara’s a trans girl, and aang’s not a boy or a girl and that’s all you need to know–even if that much 🙄 so it’s not like tenzin and their siblings grow up not knowing that’s a Thing, because they are both very open about gender, especially aang, who encourages them to Think Some Thoughts about gender.
and tenzin tries.
oh boy, do they try lmaoo
tenzin thinks about gender. they don’t really get it tbh. and not in a comedic “what even is gender” meme kind of way, but like. genuinely. but at this point they’re kind of too embarrassed to seriously ask. katara and sokka make gender sound simple and clean-cut, while aang makes it sound like some sort of vague, weird concept, and tenzin’s siblings just kinda took their own interpretations of these and ran with them.
like, okay, sure. tenzin is seen as a boy by the people in the around them. there are certain expectations and assumptions around this perception/what it means. they don’t necessarily like all of them–which is its own can of worms when deciding why–if that is because they simply don’t like these conceptions, or if they don’t like them because they aren’t a guy, but like… picking that apart sounds stressful and complicated.
tenzin hasn’t brought it up with anyone because it’s kind of an awkward and embarrassing thing to admit, but they Super Do Not Like how their voice has gotten deeper. after a while they have realized it is not just the voice cracking thing going on that they don’t like, but just like. in general. everything is okay until they open their mouth 🙃
it’s not like, Every Conversation, but sometimes when they’re talking to someone and it’s a bit quiet, listening to their own voice makes their stomach drop. like that’s really what they sound like. fantastic. 🙃🙃🙃 (/s)
they think about this some but like… not liking their voice doesn’t necessarily mean anything?
kya’s a trans lesbian, and when kya comes out to their family tenzin finally gathers the courage and asks her how she knew. kya admits that it wasn’t like a single sudden realization or a point in life where she just Knew like most people seem to think there is. there were a lot of things that factored into it, but one of the main things wasn’t really how she felt with being misgendered as a boy, but the comfort she took in knowing that there were other things she could be perceived as instead, and other things she could be.
that’s the first time that someone’s ever explained to tenzin their self discovery with that much understanding. it’s a lot better than bumi’s “idk. if you know you know, you know” + generally being annoying about it every time tenzin tries to have a serious conversation (bumi is agender and when they’re like “but how do you know what your gender is” he’s like “you think i would know? rip to you all with genders but i’m different 😌”)
so after this conversation with her, tenzin is just like…. 👁👄👁 omg okay…. that actually makes some sense.
that gets him thinking more, but this time in a more specific direction. they still don’t know anything for sure though. tenzin Suspects they are not Exactly a boy, but other than that??? anyone’s guess is as good as theirs lmao. they try to take comfort in know there are ‘other things’ they could be, but mostly it just ends up stressing them out.
-
after tenzin and pema are together, tenzin has been thinking about it even more, and wants to talk to pema about it. like. tenzin has decided that there is a large possibility that they are not a man, and choosing a specific label just sounds so… permanent. they haven’t talked to kya or bumi or anyone about THEIR gender, specifically, because like… what’re they going to say? “hey actually i don’t think i’m a guy” “then what are you?” “idk good question”???
but tenzin has been questioning for a while now (like. a while a while LOL), and they want to trust pema with this.
(EDIT: also time to mention pema is a trans woman. i forgot to mention this for some reason)
one day pema says something along the lines of “ur my husband” and tenzin takes the opportunity and kind of just laughs like… what if i’m not… jk…. unless…? 😳😳
it’s not exactly how tenzin wanted to approach the subject ofc. pema grows kind of concerned when they’re like “well… actually… i might not be” and needs to clarify they still very much are pema’s spouse, but like… not husband, specifically. but yes, spouse. maybe?
tenzin is embarrassed at first to admit this because they’re like 40 years old. they just had their first kid. are they not a bit old for this?? (the answer is no, there is no age limit to this sort of thing.)
pema is happy to know and tenzin is happy to have told her because even if they’re still figuring it out at least there is someone who kind of Knows that there is a Possibility They Are Not Cis. and pema’s kind of like… idk… if you’ve been thinking about this for that long then i think there is More than a possibility that you Aren’t Cis. to which tenzin makes sure to emphasize they are still not 100% certain about anything.
pema’s like okay that’s fine but like… you know that you don’t have to be 100% certain to try on a label? labels are not things that have to be permanent. if in a few weeks you are just 70% certain that you’re nonbinary, you’re allowed to say you’re nonbinary. if some time later you find another label you’re more confident in, you can change to that. you don’t have to be absolutely 100% all the time to try stuff out.
tenzin surprised pikachu face
okay so… logically, they’ve known this. other people they know have done this, including their siblings. but otherwise? for themself? it honestly hadn’t crossed their mind that they’re allowed to just. say that they feel like x is a term for them, and then change their mind later.
but as simple as pema makes it sound, tenzin kind of internally cringes at the thought of having to say ‘so i told you i was x gender but now i think i’m x”. isn’t it enough of a hassle to do that all once, but again? just because they weren’t sure the first time??? ughhh
what if they ditched the whole thing altogether? throw the entire suitcase out. who needs a label 😌😌 aang kind of didn’t either
-
tenzin starts using any pronouns (like aang did, but aang wanted pronouns to be alternated, while tenzin hasn’t necessarily specified that) by the start of lok, but only with their family and korra.
aang also didnt use a label to describe his gender, and tenzin has been trying to be okay with doing the same.
in lok, hearing pema ask “were tenzin and their siblings this crazy when they were kids?” makes them happier than they can express. it’s like there’s little exclamation marks just going off in their head. like yes!!! that is them!! them!!! Euphoria ™ 💓❤💕💞💗💖💝
and then katara’s reply with “not tenzin, she was always rather serious” and tenzin almost forgets that they have to tell korra that they can’t stay and train her because that also makes them elated, although not quite to the extent that pema using “their” did.
after that they’re still going by any pronouns, but they’ve decided they have a preference for they/them.
when they’re back at air temple island, pema asks about other aspects of gender expression. which like lol tenzin has also been avoiding that thanks 💖 they’ve just been presenting as expected by everyone else–keeping their beard, wearing their usual robes, etc. they’re just like “i’m fine as i am ig” which is true. they’ve thought about changing up their appearance but like lol. they are also on the council and tenzin doesn’t need anything else adding an extra layer of stress on those meetings when everyone already seems inclined to not listen to them. which is also why they haven’t told anyone else about using any pronouns.
-
when season 2 comes around tenzin is still not satisfied with just Not Labeling their gender, but now that they aren’t on the council anymore, they can think about it more.
it’s just… they spent a long time figuring out what gender was, how they felt about their own gender, and while at the time just leaving it alone seemed simpler, it didn’t make them any happier. it really bugs them, actually, lmao.
at this point they are certain they are not a man, and highly doubt they are a woman either. in fact, they’re still not sure if they have a gender like, at all, but they are very hesitant to put a word to it.
they’ve become used to being referred to as a mix of he/they/she/xe/etc. around their family, although their use of he/him has decreased significantly and they mainly use they/them, so when they hear the air acolytes in the southern air temple consistently refer to them as “he”, they sort of have to pause a minute, and then decide to finally say something.
they’re asked then abt their gender and tenzin’s just like… um actually i’m just not putting a label to it atm you know haha ❤
it goes over pretty well but telling other people that makes them realize how much they actually do want to label it, despite how aang used to talk about not needing a word just for others to perceive her gender, and how everyone keeps telling them “that’s valid!”, etc. etc.
the scene in the spirit world with tenzin’s spiritual enlightenment is also about tenzin realizing that they are also free to explore their gender the way THEY want to, not the way everyone else did. even kya’s answer to “how did u know u were trans” doesn’t necessarily have to apply to how they did.
tbh after that tenzin stops caring. and not in an “my gender doesn’t matter to me anymore” way but “it does matter but now i will stop worrying about trying to do gender the ‘right way’“.
afterward they decide they think they are nonbinary. it’s a label that makes them happy, and it does cover what they’ve determined their gender might be. nonbinary is a broad term, and while they’re still not sure of the specifics, that’s okay. if they later discover they’re something else, that’s also okay. they can tell people they are nonbinary, and it’s fine if they have to tell them something different later. it’s not a hassle if it makes them feel happy being out.
-
tenzin’s family can still use any pronouns for them, but now everyone else is using only they/them for them.
tenzin’s okay with being called a husband/father/etc when coming from their family despite their initial talk with pema because they trust that they Get It and know that it’s not in a Cis Way, you know???
tenzin keeps their beard (unfortunately) and keeps shaving their head and stuff but they occasionally wear dresses with long swishy skirts and the euphoria!!!!! 😭😭 they love the cloak swishing you KNOW they’d love long swishy skirts too
this is actually the happiest tenzin can remember being with their gender and stuff. people are using they/any pronouns for them, they are wearing whatever they want, they are nonbinary, AND people know!!!
also time to mention jinora is transfem nonbinary, and she’s a bit nervous about shaving her head at first to get her tattoos. tenzin reassures jinora that her hair will grow back AND she will have her tattoos, which she’s wanted and has welllll since earned. they have a parent/daughter bonding moment over her distress about finally having grown her hair out as long as it was only to shave it all off.
and tenzin understands that her nervousness doesn’t mean she doesn’t want them–she asked tenzin about getting them way before that. they are hugely significant to her identity, too, just as they are to theirs. tenzin gets it, and keeps going out of their way to give jinora compliments and use her pronouns in front of her while her hair is still growing back.
and ingores that jinora does the same for them for a little while after they tell her they’re nonbinary. no they’re not crying over how sweet their daughter is you are 😭
tenzin is pretty much freely expressing their gender however they want and living their best life now 😌
nonbinary tenzin… ❤❤ we love to see it
also additional headcanons for other characters that didn’t make it in:
sokka is nonbinary and uses ne/nim pronouns
kai is transmasc nonbianry (he/him)

Pema and Pemzin hcs because I care them
Pema grew up in the country near Ba Sing Se. She went to Ba Sing Se University for history, and after she graduated, she moved to Republic City. This is where she first comes into contact with the air acolytes. She’s doing some post-graduate research on the Air Nation, and she schedules and interview with Tenzin.
During the interview, she can’t stop smiling at Tenzin’s enthusiasm for the Air Nation, and she’s like “oh man, they’re pretty cute.” Meanwhile, Tenzin is getting very flustered and flubbing almost every answer because Pema is just so pretty.
After that first interview, Pema starts going to Tenzin even when she’s not doing research on the Air Nation. They’re one of the only people she knows in the city, and, as the child of avatar Aang and a member of the council, they have a lot of connections.
Pema is crushed when she finds out Tenzin is dating Lin, but her and Tenzin become fairly good friends, bonding over cool niche facts about the Air Nation. She tells them more about where she grew up, and Tenzin loves learning about it.
Lin and Tenzin have a falling out and break up, and suddenly, Pema needs to do so much more research on the Air Nation! She has to spend so much time with Tenzin! Oh no!
Pema and Tenzin start hanging out a lot more, the guise of research falls away pretty quickly. They make each other their favorite dishes, Tenzin asks Pema for advice about the Air Nation, the council, etc. They start dating. Eventually, Pema is spending most days on Air Temple Island, and she starts to seriously consider becoming and air acolyte. She loves the way they live, but her only qualm is whether she would be expected to completely give up her own culture. That's not something she's willing to do.
Tenzin is taking her out on a date that night, and she decides to bring it up then. On that date, Tenzin is like "i have something to ask you" and Pema is like "me too." Tenzin gets a bit nervous that Pema is going to break up with him or have bad news and it will ruin their surprise. So, their like, umm okay, you first. and Pema's like, no you first, and they both refuse to go first, so they decide to just ask together at once. Cue: "I think I want to be an air acolyte""will you marry me." Tenzin is immediately like "omg you want to be an air acolyte? that's awesome! are you sure?" so it takes Pema a minute to process what they asked. She's like "yeah, I think so, but I need to know if I can balance it with my own culture." Tenzin starts talking about how being a air acolyte works and that she doesn't have to completely give up her own culture if she doesn't want to as long as she believes in the Air Nation values and their way of living. Then, Pema's like "wait did you ask me to marry you?" and Tenzin is like "yeah..." Pema obviously says yes, they get married, somewhere in between she becomes an air acolyte, and they live happily ever after :)

campus. (asami x f!reader) modern au!
hi i was listening to vampire weekend’s campus and i was like huh this would be cute with iroh ii and then i was like wait a damn minute... this would be GREAT WITH ASAMI so here u go guys gals and nonbinary pals
Red and orange leaves fluttered through the air, cascading through the breeze and landing under (Y/N’s) boots with a satisfying crunch. Despite it being autumn, the temperature had not gotten the memo. She had walked out of her house and into the crisp air wearing a jumper, jeans, and boots, but now she was unbearably hot. She sweat in her jumper as she walked across the quad, the setting sun beating against her back. This kind of weather was impossible to dress for. Cool in the morning, hot in the afternoon, and freezing in the evenings.
(Y/N) twisted her backpack around her body to search its pockets for her headphones. She was starting the trek to the library to finish her essay. It was Friday, so she should be heading back to her tiny apartment, but she hated to bring schoolwork back home with her. As she dug around, her eyes caught sigh of something shiny and black fluttering in the wind. Assistant Professor Sato had flicked her hair behind her shoulder as she walked beside Dr. Tenzin, (Y/N’s) religious studies professor. They were deep in conversation, and while the sun had turned (Y/N) into a sweaty mess, Professor Sato looked gorgeous and dewy in the golden hour. (Y/N) huffed, blowing a strand of hair out of her face, and continued her walk to the library.
Normally, her friends would be waiting for her at their usual table, but they were absent today. Mako had started his criminal justice internship that week, so his evenings were full now. Korra and Bolin had gotten into an argument over who could bench the most earlier in the day, so (Y/N) figured they were at the gym. She grinned as she spread her belongings on the table, reveling in the space she had now that her friends were gone. She enjoyed their companionship, but rarely ever got actual work done.
She opened her computer and quickly got to work. The faster she finished this essay, the faster she could get home and slide into her bathtub. (Y/N) put in her headphones and became lost to the world around her.
She had made great progress during her first few hours at the library, but slowly, she started to lose all motivation. She stopped typing for a moment to rub her eyes. She checked her phone. Her groupchat was lighting up with messages from Bolin. He had a stream of consciousness approach to texting. She smiled and replied to the 37 texts with, “Finishing my essay. Someone kill me pls.” She put her phone away as Bolin started replying immediately, shouting about how much he missed her.
(Y/N) returned to her work but was interrupted once more by someone sliding into the chair across from her. She looked up to find bright green eyes beneath long, dark eyelashes, staring at her. She frowned. “Hi, Dr. Sato.”
Asami frowned back, but hers was more sad. “Hey, (Y/N), how are you doing today?”
“Fine,” Was (Y/N’s) response. She didn’t return the question.
“I don’t like it when you’re mad at me.”
“Well I think you’ll get over it eventually.” Asami sighed.
“I’m trying here and you’re being difficult.” She knew Asami was right. She wasn’t being fair. But did she owe Asami fairness?
(Y/N) shut her laptop and perched her chin on her palm, piercing Asami with her own gaze. “You’re obviously here for a reason. Out with it.”
“(Y/N)--” Asami looked around the room so that no one would overhear them. “I want to apologize.”
“Oh!” (Y/N) exclaimed as quietly as she could. “It only took you three months. What made you realize that you had done something wrong?”
(Y/N) was being unkind and she knew it. But she wanted Asami to hurt like she had hurt. Months ago, before (Y/N) had ever started graduate school, she and Asami had met at the bookstore (Y/N) had worked at over the summer. She had never become so enamored by someone before and it had become obvious that Asami had felt the same way, because she kept returning to the store once every few days to ask (Y/N) for recommendations.
It had been a hot summer day when (Y/N) had approached Asami in one of the aisles, her favorite book in her hand. She handed it to her with a smile and said, “This one’s on me. It’s my favorite.”
Asami’s face had flushed bright red. “Thank you. I can’t wait to read it.”
Then, at the same time, they had both said: “Would you like to go out with me some time?” Both girls had nodded excitedly and exchanged numbers in preparation for the date. They had talked for weeks before Asami had just...stopped. (Y/N’s) texts went unanswered and her favorite customer stopped visiting.
She realized the reason when she had arrived for her first day of class during her first year of graduate school. Asami had stood at the front of the room wearing a form-fitting blazer and pencil skirt combo, the board behind her reading ‘Dr. Sato.’ And from that day on, (Y/N) had been angry. Not because Asami was her professor, but because she didn’t have the decency to tell (Y/N) why they couldn’t talk anymore.
“I’m sorry that I stopped talking to you. I’m sorry I never gave you an explanation. But when I saw your name on my roster, I panicked. I could lose my job if they found out I was seeing a student.”
“This isn’t a Lifetime movie, Dr. Sato. I’m an adult who is perfectly capable of making my own decisions. If you had told me what was going on, I would have been happy just being your friend for a little while.”
“I know,” Asami said, nodding her head. “I didn’t want to be your friend.” (Y/N’s) eyebrow quirked up at her admission, her face heating up. “I know it’s going to take a lot for me to earn back your trust, but in the mean time, could we start over?”
(Y/N) how much of a sucker she was for sweet talk. Her face still burning, she nodded. Asami stuck out her hand. “I’m Dr. Asami Sato, pleasure to meet you.”
(Y/N) giggled, shaking her hand. “Nice to meet you, Dr. Sato--”
“Asami,” she interjected, smiling kindly at (Y/N). (Y/N) tried her hardest to hold in her own smile.
“Asami. I’m (Y/N) (L/N).”
“I’ve heard about you, you’re in my Romantics class, right?” (Y/N) nodded. “Sad you’ll only be my student for eleven more weeks this semester.” Asami stood, looking around to make sure no one would notice them, and then winked at (Y/N) before walking out of the library.
As (Y/N) watched her walk away, she couldn’t help but think that she wouldn’t mind taking some schoolwork home for the weekend.

kai from tlok or hakoda, maybe even bumi ii?
hello, my beloved :) jeg siger undskyld (i apologize in danish) for the uh. belated response. work got uh. a lot. and then i got far too invested in sds for my own good anD THEN I MOVED lol aNYWAYS here's all of them as a treat:)
kai
how i feel about this character: i absolutely adore him. i think he has a lot of really good moments--especially when everyone thought he was dead but then he wasn't and rather than saving himself, he risked his life to save the people who, essentially, saved him from a rough life on the streets. not to mention that this was probably the first time they realized people cared about them. like, the group was so happy to see that he was alive, and before he joined the air acolytes, he probably didn't have anyone who would have mourned them. he shows so much courage and passion when he gets invested in something and i love them for it.
all the people i ship romantically with this character: kainora my beloved !!! and like shipping him with pretty much anyone but jinora and maybe ikki would be. weird and kinda gross tbh. but he and jinora balance each other out yet aren't afraid to encourage the other and have fun together and that's just. that's so good.
my non-romantic otp for this character: mako and kai !!! like... they both have a lot to learn from each other and i love them for that. it's after mako realizes that bolin is old enough to take care of himself, he fixates on kai as his younger sibling to try and make up for that and to feel needed and able to protect someone because he sees bits of his younger self in kai. and it's kai showing mako that he doesn't always need to be the big brother, that he can depend on other people but also loving having an older brother figure and not knowing how to process that so they act out because that's all they've ever known... it's messy and weird but it's them and their odd sibling-esc relationship and i love it<3
my unpopular opinion about this character: idk if this qualifies as unpopular but demiboy he / they kai rights !!!
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish we got more backstory for him--like, that we learned more about his life as a child and that they explored the mako and kai sibling-esc relationship more but's it's all good--i can always headcanon :)
~
hakoda
how i feel about this character: hakoda my beloved !!! ngl, at first i didn't like hakoda because he seemed like the perfect person for awhile--swt chief loved by everyone, best warrior ever, can do no wrong... and that bothered me a lot when i first watched the show two years ago ??? anywas, i love he now. he's a good dad and the love he has for his kids is extraordinary and heartwarming and i love it and him<3
all the people i ship romantically with this character: bato !!! sometimes i forget that bakoda isn't canon... like... genuinely i forget that it's a fannon ship. that is how deeply i ship bakoda.
kyoda is obviously wonderful too! bakoda just holds a special place in my heart. but i wish we got more kyoda scenes in flashbacks or something because they were adorable.
my non-romantic otp for this character: hakoda & sokka, hakoda & katara are my two biggest ones. i mean,,, that reunion hug at the end of boiling rock ??? like,,, yes that family is everything to me. plus, as much as i love the possibility for great dynamics and healing with hakoda being a father figure to zuko, there are more fics under the tag 'hakoda & zuko' than there are with both watertribe siblings which is just. very sad. so i feel like zuko's possible relationship with him gets more attention than hakoda with his kids. like... don't get me wrong, i love the hakoda and zuko dynamics... but like. sokka and katara...
also hakoda and toph. i feel like they'd get along really well and would be too powerful for this world.
my unpopular opinion about this character: that... hmmm... idk if i have an unpopular opinion about him... yeah, i can't think of any oihgvhj
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish we had more scenes with hakoda and his kids, but that's me being greedy. i also wish canon would just admit that bakoda is canon already p l e a s e they !!!
~
bumi ii
how i feel about this character: oh boy, where do i staRT !!! i love bumi ii. he is my 1.5 favorite lok character and i absolutely adore him. i wish we got more of him--i do. and that is me being greedy because i think we got more of him than kya ii, but still. he is everything i love in a character--feels useless compared to the others because he can't bend, feeling disconnected an unimportant in his own family because they're all super powerful benders and he's just... he's just bumi ii, the nonbender. acting out for attention because, at this point, even negative attention is better than constantly being overshadowed. and despite the resentment he may feel towards his siblings for being "better" and "more important" than he is, he's still a big brother at heart and would do / sacrifice anything for them.
all the people i ship romantically with this character: no one !!! bumi ii is aroace thank you and goodnight <3
my non-romantic otp for this character: bumi ii & izumi. i just,,, i just feel like they would get along so well??? like. i cannot describe it, but in the gaang's kids crew, they are the best friends. izumi is one of the first people he comes out to as aroace and bumi ii is the first person izumi comes out to as nonbinary. they find solace and peace in each other and understand parts of the other that no one really understands.
bumi ii & sokka also. they have so much in common and they deserve to be besties. bumi ii needs reassurance from someone who understand being the resident nonbender, and sokka needs someone who recognizes and verbalizes that he's amazing and someone worthy of looking up to.
also, naturally, bumi ii & his family. i mean, the sibling relationship was a bit strained, but the three care about each other so much even though they don't get along well. bumi ii is used to looking out for them and taking the blame if kya ii or tenzin did something bad because he wants to protect his siblings the best he can and he may not have magic bending powers, but he can do this. and bumi ii's relationship with aang and katara is definitely better than how they made it seem in the show--change my mind. aang may accidentally give tenzin more attention due to, ya know, airbending, but there is quite simply no way that aang or katara would ever neglect a child as much as the show made it seem. the kataang parents are good parents and i stand by that.
my unpopular opinion about this character: bumi ii has tourette's !!! he got it from his uncle sokka and actually, i headcanon that he actually doesn't curse or say vulgar things a lot because he has some form of coprolalia and always has to curse / say vulgar things against his will, so he does his best not to curse if he isn't being forced. also aroace bumi ii rights.
one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i so desperately wish that bumi ii had tourette's in canon... y'all have no idea... i also hate the way that the show had him join the military like ??? that's just weird and i just. did not like it that much ??? so i wish it happened differently. no. you know how i wish it happened? since he has coprolalia, he struggled to find jobs willing to hire him. the other sailors didn't care that sometimes he yelled inappropriate things--it didn't matter to them.
and, lastly, may i suggest reading never been in love (and it's all good) by my bestie @zukkaclawthorne ! it is an aro bumi ii fic about him coming out and it's the content we don't deserve but cherish <3

Been thinking about my hypothetical live action remake of Korra (seriously Netflix, call me, I have so many amazing ideas) and how I would tackle season two since it’s definitely the season that needs the most work, specifically and especially the Unalaq & Raava-Vaatu plotline. I kind of got carried away, like I do, but I’m very excited about it; a lot of good strong themes here. I’m going to start by talking about the changes to the first half, pre-Beginnings interlude, then the Beginnings episodes, then the back half. For the most part, all of the major plot beats still stay the same, at least until the climax, but the way those beats are contextualized are going to get pretty different building up to a radically different climax (no spirit being kaiju fight, yay!).
With Unalaq in the front half, the one major change is I want the religious fundamentalism vibes that come on so strong when he’s introduced to ramp up after the Northern Tribe soldiers show up and especially after Korra finally realizes he’s a bad guy, rather than petering out like happens in canon. I want to actually see him impose strict expectations of behavior in accordance with what he feels honors the spirits on the people of Southern Water Tribe. Let’s get some misogyny and restrictive gender roles up in here. That’s going to be great (from a storytelling perspective, obviously) because it’s relatively low-hanging fruit to communicate that the bad guy is bad, it fits in well thematically with where we’re going and the religious fundamentalism, and there is canon precedent in The Last Airbender that restrictive gender roles are a traditional value in the Northern Water Tribe.
A quick sidebar related to themes, in whatever episode where we first have Unalaq really cracking down on those gender roles, I want a B or possibly C plot with the Tenzin family vacation, where Jinora comes out to Tenzin as nonbinary. She is questioning with regards to the exact nature of her gender, but does say its some combination of both masculine and feminine, though other nonbinary identities – including agender, genderfluid, and a gender that is completely divorced from male-female – are floated. Tenzin is supportive and affirming and also suggests Jinora talk with her Aunt Kya, who he identifies as being a transwoman. (Kya is a trans lesbian in my version; you gotta deal with it.) This obviously serves to contrast Unalaq with his strict gender roles, and continues to build our theme.
For Korra in the first half, I do want to drag her emotional volatility down just a tad as compared to where she’s at in canon for these episodes. I still want her getting emotional and acting rash – that’s a huge part of her character – but I want her anger to feel sympathetic to the audience. Though I do also want at least one moment where Korra gets angry for good reason and starts yelling at Unalaq and he chides her for being emotional and irrational and he’s not going to discuss this with her if she can’t behave calmly and logically, blah, blah, blah, misogyny.
The final and biggest change that we’re making in the first half is Korra does not yet have her bending back. Season one does still end with her talking with Aang and learning energybending, which she uses to restore everyone else’s bending and restore her own connection to the other three elements, but in the opening episode of season two, we learn that she still can only airbend. She says that as far as she can tell everything should be alright and she should be able to bend fire, water, and earth, but obviously she can’t. She also mentioned that while it looks like it should, she feels like there is something missing, or maybe something there that she can’t see. Which my clever readers of course realize is a reference to Raava. After her flashback coma, Korra gains the other elements back, explaining that what she was missing was her connection to Raava had been damaged. Not broken, which is why she could still airbend and do all the other Avatar stuff she was doing, but damaged enough that Raava could no longer switch elements for her or give her access to multiple elements at once.
Moving on to Beginnings, right off the bat, I’m getting rid of the notion that all humans have to huddle on the backs of lion turtles out of fear of the spirits. The two worlds are connected, but humans and spirits co-exist peacefully for the most part. The lion turtles instead act as mediators when necessary, and do sometimes give out bending for humans to defend themselves with, but not as a regular thing every time they need to leave their city. We’ll have to switch up the stealing fire and Chin plot a little to accommodate this change, but somehow or other it happens and Wan gets banished with firebending.
Eventually he comes across Raava and Vaatu fighting and these two characters are getting some major shake ups. First off, in canon Raava identifies as being peace to counter Vaatu’s chaos, but peace is not the opposite of chaos; order is. Now, looking into yin & yang, chaos & order are not aspects that traditionally apply to them, but we’re going to let that addition of order to yang and light and chaos to yin and dark stand. Not everything has to be perfectly aligned. That said, one way in which we are going to switch things to make them fit better is yang is the masculine energy with yin as feminine. We’re switching the voices.
So Wan sees them fighting, and Vaatu calls out for help. And Wan is like, oh no, a damsel in distress; I’ll help you, milady! So, he helps, giving Vaatu the advantage. She beats up Raava, then flies off. Raava chastises Wan, explaining that he is the spirit of light and order, and he has been trying since the beginning of time to defeat Vaatu, but their battles have always ended in a draw. But now Wan has given Vaatu the advantage and if they don’t fix this, she’ll be victorious at the upcoming Harmonic Convergence, sending the worlds into ten thousand years of darkness. To which Wan is like, oh no, that sounds horrible. Well, Mr. Masculine Manly Spirit-Man Raava, I like light and order and you seem like a logical rational person; I’ll for sure help you put that emotional crazy spirit lady in her place. (Have I made the irony here clear enough? I don’t think I can get much more blatant. Though obviously in the show version it would be a little more subtle.)
After that we get Raava & Wan’s training and learning the elements montage, with some encounters with “corrupted” spirits along the way. Corrupted being Raava’s word, and he elaborates to say that all spirits fall under either Raava or Vaatu’s domain, all with varying inherent levels of light & order and dark & chaos to them. Vaatu gaining in power is causing the levels of dark& chaos in these spirits to rise, throwing them out of balance. Eventually comes time for Harmonic Convergence, Raava & Wan vs. Vaatu, and Vaatu wins. Ten thousand years of chaos, baby. With the last of the spirit energy as Harmonic Convergence ends, Wan fuses with Raava, then unleashes a crazy, amazing spirit attack, imprisoning Vaatu, banishing all the spirits from the physical world to the spirit world, and sealing the portals, all as an attempt to mitigate the fall out from chaos ascendent. Since then, the Avatar, imbued with the spirit of order, has fought back against the chaos to try to restore balance to the world.
Korra wakes up and panics. They have to stop Unalaq who is trying to free Vaatu, probably because he wants to destroy the world or something. But when she next has a chance to confront Unalaq, he’s like, not you stupid girl. I’m not trying to destroy the world; I’m trying to save it. Wan was right to side with order, but wrong to think he could stop chaos by teaming up with Raava and destroying it from without. No chaos is inside all of us, the evil infesting every human heart (Unalaq’s words, not mine) and it can only be dominated through one’s own strong force of will and conviction. So his plan is to fuse with Vaatu and then dominate her, destroy her chaos and using her power to allow him to bring his order across all of existence, both in the physical and spirit worlds. Korra’s not too keen on that plan either. She’s still going to stop him.
Korra fails to stop him. Harmonic Convergence begins, Vaatu is freed, she goes inside of Unalaq, and she immediately subsumes him. Turns out you can’t eliminate all the chaos in the world just by willpower, you absolute looney toon. Vaatu explains that even as Unalaq was planning to use her, she was using him to get free and now is going to use him as a meat puppet to help her fight Raava & the Avatar.
So, they fight, and for a bit it’s evenly matched, then Vaatu gains the upper hand. Just as Vaatu appears she’s about to deal the finishing blow, Unalaq briefly regains control and interrupts her – to be clear, he manages this because of his desperate need for order and control, not out of any affection for Korra. While he’s in control he says something in defiance of Vaatu that coming from Unalaq we can hear is clearly some fascist bullshit, but also echoes something that Wan/Raava said back in their battle with Vaatu. And Korra’s like, wait, hold up a second.
Lightbulb turns on for Korra at that moment, and by the time Vaatu has resecure control, Korra has dropped her offensive stance. She tells Vaatu she doesn’t want to fight her; she wants her to fuse with her and Raava. Neither Vaatu nor Raava like this idea. Korra has to go on the defensive holding off Vaatu’s attacks, and has to internally fight against Raava wanting to attack Vaatu all while trying to sell them both on this idea. She explains that too much chaos has been bad for the world, but too much order would be bad too – case in point, Unalaq. Both chaos and order, both Raava and Vaatu are needed for balance. And yeah, they can achieve balance by constantly fighting each other, with every encounter ending as a draw, or they could achieve balance through harmony together. Because even as they are opposites, they are one and the same, a part of a greater whole. A bunch of stuff to that effect, including mentions of the Northern Water Tribe upsetting the balance by trying to dominate the Southern Water Tribe, and also a shout out to Tui and La in there somewhere, the original Yin/Yang Avatar couple. Eventually Korra convinces them, she fuses with Vaatu, and Harmonic Convergence ends in a tie, returning the world to balance once again.
And of course, now that balance has been achieved, Korra leaves the spirit portals open. Remember in this version spirits and humans got along fine, and the separation was only necessary because the world had fallen out of balance. And yes, the rejoining of the physical and spirit worlds was probably something Unalaq wanted too, but we’re not giving him credit for it, because for every good idea a fascist ever had, there’s someone else who isn’t a fascist who had the same idea, but better, because it wasn’t coming from a fascist.

Korra and Asami get married after 3 years of dating, they have a son and a nonbinary child.
Bolin and opal also get married and have a big family. 9 kids!!
Mako left for a bit to find himself (cause I dont want him to be some damn cop no more. thats just weird.) And eventually came back when he heard it was announced korra and Asami were getting hitched. Also mako realized he is gay (why? Cause I said so)
Korra and mako are close friends after mako returns and lightens up (mako is a big stick in the mud before hand)
Bolin and mako become closer bros too! Mako is the babysitter of the group.
Asami made korra her necklace. Katara taught her how.
Korra was the one to be pregnant when Asami and korra wanted children (My Asami is trans)
Mako is also trans! And korra didnt know this til he came out gay. Asami tho knew when he was having issues with going to her pool.
Bolin is the token cishet.
Opal had a crush on korra but bolin stole her heart.
Noatak didn't die I will forever be pissed about that. 😠 he married a waterbender man and had 4 kids.
Tarrlock tho indeed died. :(
Tahno joins once he gets his shit figured out. He kinda went into different phases after amon.
Tahno is bisexual and ends up dating mako. (Cause I said so.)
Tahno is musically gifted and can also sing.
Tenzin is the one all the gang goes to for advice. Korra and mako especially.
Tenzin and pama basically adopted bolin, mako and Asami since they are all without parents. Even tho they are adults they look out after them.
Lin and Kya get together. Cause I said so.
Korra's predecessor does look a bit like Asami, he has darker skin than Asami did. He's mostly got her eyes and her hair.

got anything about pema being supportive of nb tenzin?
you.... you get it
❤︎ yes i will take every chance i get to expand on my original headcanons so:
i should start this off with pema is trans too 😌
when tenzin's just like "so maybe i'm not a guy" pema is like !!!!
and while they're explaining what they can about the general Gender Feels pema's like that’s great! do u have anything in mind that u feel is a fit
skjss she was just curious but it just seems to make tenzin more stressed 😭 and they explain that... maybe?? they've considered a few and that's when pema realizes they have been "considering" this much longer than they've told her about
afterward, even though they haven't specifically asked her to stop using gendered language like husband/father/etc., she does, and tenzin notices. they're like 😭😭 hello do u know how much i love you...
when pema asks about pronouns tenzin lowkey stresses out again like ough idkkk. any?????
and even though they were very hesitant to try going by any pronouns in the first place, pema’s enthusiasm about it makes them all :”)) and gives them a bit more confidence about actually Trying It rather than just Thinking About It, Wishing They Were Referred To With Other Pronouns As Well
and while he/him is still okay at the time pema goes out of her way to use other pronouns, and it makes them very happy. its like yeah!!! that’s them!!!!! and best of all pema Gets It when it comes to gender euphoria and that being the most solidifying factor in picking apart their experiences
pema offers to do a small “i’ll make up some sentences and use other pronouns for you in them” because that’s something she asked her friends to do for her when she first came out and it helped a bit :”)
skfsjks tenzin agrees and Does Not regret it because there is a lot of Very Good Feelings that come from the whole “that’s tenzin, they are my spouse. she’s an airbender, and a talented one at that. xe is a very good parent” spiel
and after tenzin comes out as nonbinary pema starts relating a lot of the experiences they describe with similar ones she has had to them as “yeah so that’s a trans thing, actually.”
tenzin is like “i just like this cloak because i’m already really tall but fuck you if you wanna know what i look like beyond that” and pema’s like... oh, trans mood
it feels Incredibly Validating
the first few times tenzin wears robes more like pema’s, she starts breaking out the compliments as casually as she can like!!! hell yeah wear whatever u want
it’s unfortunate tenzin has a complicated relationship with compliments in general but it’s coming from their wife... from pema.. who lovely and is trans... ❤︎❤︎ like yeah okay thank u i love u
pema asks one day if she can do tenzin’s make and offers to teach them if that is something they end up interested in... and they’re kind of unsure about it but agree because it’s with pema, and they trust her
it’s... okay. the makeup itself is fine!! pema is pretty good with it, it’s just... really not their thing.
pema notices the mood shift but how are they even supposed to Explain This. “it’s really nice and u did a good job but also i kind of don’t like it because now i am thinking about my gender and how my face just kinda Looks and i don’t like that ❤︎”????
and pema is like... well if it makes u dysphoric u can always wash it off
tenzin is like.... dysphoric... that is indeed a word...
it doesn’t last long but pema sympathizes and checks in with them again after a little bit, which tenzin appreciates fdjkrwe they feel kind of silly for not recognizing what that was at all but it’s fine
so.. yeah ❤︎ pema is a trans woman and tenzin is nonbinary and they are both very happy :)

aang and tenzin are nonbinary and make jewellery together 💗
You’re right and you should say it. Also I’m going to incorporate this into my craftbending au if you don’t mind:
so Aang and his family are all major crafters--they can all treat bison wool, spin and dye yarn, and knit and crochet.
however, Aang prefers spinning and knitting, Kya’s really into the dyeing process, Bumi really loves treating the wool and spinning it, and Tenzin’s a crocheter through and through.
Katara’s not really into yarn, and prefers sewing and making jewelry.
Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi start craftbending when they’re really young, and Aang sees it as an opportunity to connect to both his kids and his culture, so he teaches them to make jewelry and they all make jewelry for each other.
Aang’s a transmasc he/they enby (who uses them pretty interchangeably, as I will do throughout this reply). They really vibe with jewelry as a concept, but they don’t like wearing a ton of it. Their go to is necklaces, and they receive a lot of necklaces of varying levels of quality as birthday presents from their kids
Bumi is agender (they/them) and doesn’t vibe with jewelry a ton? The only thing they will really consider is headpieces and that’s only bc they’re a Kyoshi Warrior and they really look up to Kyoshi, and thus they really love the idea of having a gold headpiece for themselves.
Aang works really hard for like a month making them one for their birthday (he gets Sokka to help him with the blacksmithing aspects because that’s a little out of his range) and Bumi absolutely loves it and wears it with their uniform
Kya is a transfem she/they enby. For a while she doesn’t vibe with jewelry either, but once she realizes she’s a nonbinary woman (as opposed to a binary woman) they start wearing jewelry a little more. They especially like really odd looking rings and funky looking earrings, though they absolutely treasure their necklace because Katara made it for them.
Bumi finds two funny looking rocks on the ground and makes them into earrings for Kya, and she wears them all the time, especially on dates with Lin.
Tenzin is nonbinary and takes a while to figure out their identity, unlike their siblings, and jewelry is initially something that they don’t love wearing at all, but they know that both of their parents really love making jewelry, so they get really good at making jewelry.
They make Pema some absolutely gorgeous bracelets when they first start dating, it’s beautiful <3
Tenzin is the one who has the most patience for longer, more complicated designs, so often they and Aang will spend time just cranking out some overly complex jewelry, sometimes talking, sometimes just sitting in peaceful silence with one another as they do their work.
When Aang starts training Tenzin in Airbending, Tenzin gets frustrated with them a lot, and on days when it gets really bad, Aang will stop training early, meditate with Tenzin for a bit, and then they’ll go work on some crafts together, either Aang knitting and Tenzin crocheting, or both of them making jewelry.
They end up working out a lot of their issues while crafting together, and it helps Tenzin to focus when they go back to Airbending
After Tenzin realizes their identity and comes out, they start wearing jewelry more often, specifically necklaces, and it makes them feel closer to their parent.
All the kataang kids + Aang make Katara bracelets all the time because she absolutely adores them, but it gets to be so many that she tells them to stop because she practically has a different bracelet for every day of the year

Concept: Aang and Katara has a nonbinary airbending child in between Kya and Tenzin.
They discovered their airbending outside on their own while playing. They are a late bloomer and is the last of their siblings to discover bending in their childhood.
Also what if they just didn't tell anyone because they don't like to have a lot of attention and are insecure.
Well it's not like it's going to be a secret for very long. I just can't help but wonder how it would play out.
I don't know why but the idea won't leave me alone.
Anyway have a nice day.
Interesting. I do think it is possible. I think they could hide it from the world for a long time because I think Tenzin was only know by people because he was in charge of Air Temple Island and part of Republic City council. Aang and Katara would find out quickly though. It would be very interesting to see how that would change the dynamics in the family.
Have a good day!
