truly magnolia is the most pathetic apex predator ever. she loses fights to spiders all the time. it's okay though she pays her rent in looming ominously over me on various high surfaces and waking me up by biting my face.

Hello to two snakes that are often confused for each other! Copperheads (Agkistrodon controtrix) and northern watersnakes (Nerodia sipedon) overlap in much of their range. Copperheads can be found in the US from the East Coast, across the midwest, and down south to Florida. Northern watersnakes are common in the US along the East Coast and midwest, and can even sometimes be found in Canada in the southern regions of Quebec. Copperheads are pit vipers, while northern watersnakes are nonvenemous colubrids--although they are notorious for their attitude and willingness to bite! Much more willing to bite than the shy copperhead who much prefers to freeze and rely on their camouflage to hide them. When northern watersnakes feel threatened, they will often put on a bit of a show, making a loud hissing noise and flattening their heads to appear larger--which can also cause people to assume they are venemous snakes due to the triangle shaped head found in many pit vipers (just one reason why head shape is not a reliable indicator of snake species!) One way to tell the two apart that is more reliable is the pupil, as copperheads have slit pupils commonly seen in other pit vipers, and watersnakes have more of a round, loveably googly eyed appearance, although if you're not sure if a snake is venemous best practice is to err on the side of caution and avoid getting eye to eye with them!
The copperhead pictured above is a juvenile, and that's not a caterpillar on the ground behind it--that's its tail! Juvenile copperheads have bright green or yellow tails--thought to help the babies attract prey as they can hide and use their tail as a lure. This color will fade into the same pattern and coloration as the rest of their body as they age and shed their skin.

Had a dream that I was riding a train in a big city area. There were signs in multiple foreign languages, so I’m not sure where I was. I was trying to carry various animals without any means of containing them. I had two puppies, small enough that I could tuck each of them in m huge winter coat pockets. I had two snakes (nonvenemous), one wrapped around my arm and one kind of around my neck. I had to be careful because one of them had a small gash on his skin. And I had an opossum in my arms. The opossum was very tame, I think it had been raised as a pet, and I was trying to get it to an animal rehab center.
But I was struggling so much to keep all these restless animals calm and keep a grip on all of them while also trying to figure out which stop I needed to get off on. The opossum ended up escaping my grasp because he was scared, and I couldn’t find him again, and I felt so terrible about it.

Silicobras are most likely hognoses, and heres my proof:
silicobra is a ground type, and hognoses dig and burrow in the ground, like silicobra does
hognoses are known to hood up like a cobra
they both share similar coloration and patterns
Silicobra is NONVENEMOUS and while hognoses are rearfanged they arnt truly venomous
hognoses have upturned snouts, and when you look closely at silicobra, it to has a similar nose

The Miraculous Alignment: Dawn of the Wild Age
For @miraculous-mused from a prompt they reblogged that I dare not link lest this get lost to the crappy tumblr tagging system
When Marinette first began to merge with the ladybug that landed on her hand one day after the celestial event people were now calling the Miraculous Alignment, she was terrified. What if she became really small? What if her eyes got all creepy looking? What if she got a sudden uncontrollable craving for aphids that could never be sated because they were so dang small?
Luckily none of that happened. As the Wild age began its fledgling stages and people learned more and more about its affects, they realized that you didn’t get all the traits of the animal you merged with. Some believed it had something to do with you personality and scientists, those that had dropped what they were researching before the Miraculous Alignment to dedicate the rest of their lives to studying the Transformation, still weren’t sure.
For Marinette all she got was some mandibles sticking out the side of her mouth almost like tusks (that the boys and girls in her class swore to her were cute); a hard chitonous plating on her forearms, abdomen, and legs; some antennae; and a figurative green thumb. After she’d adjusted to the changes she took some time to mourn the fact that she hadn’t gained wings, it would have been nice to fly.
Some of the kids in her class had also been transformed. Most have them hadn’t been too drastic though. Kim had merged with a monkey, gaining opposable thumbs on his feet and a tail. Alya got a fox ears, tail, and hind legs. Kagami had merged with a bearded dragon and all she got was scaling and some horn like ridges over her ears. Alix got the ears, tail, and buck teeth of a rabbit which Kim has made the mistake of making fun of only once before he’d found himself on the business end of the powerful rabbit legs and feet she’d also gained.
Max got the trates of a horse that made him look like a satyr if they were part horse rather that goat. Max was thankful that nothing had changed to hinder his ability build robots or code and design video games. Luka had lost his legs to become basically a naga. Beyond that he hadn’t changed much in appearance besides some scales that accented his cheekbones and covered his arms. But if he opened is mouth you could see he had a full set of colubrid snake fangs that were thankfully nonvenemous. Like with Max, Luka was just thankful he could still play guitar. There were stories in the news of people that had lost their arms and hands for flippers or wings.
Nino had merged with a turtle and got a shell as well as scaling on his forearms, legs, and torso. Although his shell made his back basically immobile it otherwise didn’t hinder him too much in his day to day life. Kagami had said that he reminded her of a kappa when she’d seen it for the first time and Nino had taken such a shine to it he changed his DJ name to Cappa as a tribute to his new form and a nod to his cap that he was never without. He also found out after going swimming with the class one day, that he could breath through his butt, which all the boys, of course, thought was awesome. They had all spent the rest of the day timing how long Nino could spend underwater before he had to surface.
Chloe’s transformation was completely unfair. She got chitonous plating on her arms and legs that looked like elegant gloves and boots and the spoiled brat also got wings dang it. Marinette counted that as a negative for the existence of karma.
As if Adrien wasn’t going through enough being a famous model, the poor guy had gone and merged with a cat, gaining all the affects of a cat boy; ears, eyes, a tail, and some adorable little cat paws with toe beans to match on his hands and feet. He also gained a cult following from the Venn diagram intersection of weebs and furries. His dad, on the other hand, got the wings, eyes, and antennae of a Hawkmoth as well as an extra set of limbs that resembled their insect counterparts. As a result the man had shit himself in as a recluse and put his new appendages to work designing. They were at least good for multitasking.
Gabriel has been one of the more unfortunate victims of the Transformation. But none had had it worse than Lila, which Marinette counted tha as positive for karma’s existence although she still felt bad. Lila had had the misfortune of merging with a naked mole rat. First she lost all the hair on her body, which would have been fine people live with alopecia all the time. No, what made it truly horrible was that along with the hairlessness, Lila gained the wrinkly skin texture. So not only was she bald, she was covered in wrinkles that made her look truly unfortunate. Gabriel had taken one look at her with his many lensed eyes and fired her on the spot. Lila had taken the news extremely hard and had been dragged from the Agreste studio kicking and screaming. Marinette’s classmates had tried to console her but she’d practically bitten off the heads of anyone who tried to speak to her and the class walked on eggshells around her for about a month before she calmed back down.
After Lila calmed down Marinette noticed she started focusing more on her studies, especially biology. She even asked Max to help her get her grades up and study. When Alya asked her why the sudden change Lila vowed that should would find a cure for the Transformation. She said it was so people that had been affected negatively by the changes could get their lives back but Marinette knew it was so she could get back her smooth skin and glossy brown hair. The rest of the class saw through her charitous claims as well but ignored it in favor of praising Lila’s forward thinking. They figured that if she did find a way to reverse the changes at least some good would come from her vanity.

I know this is a day late and a dollar short on Unus Annus takes but, as a MASSIVE snek nerd I’m still UTTERLY amused by Mark’s advice about snakes to “Look and Observe” because they’re so hard to spot.  And yeah, I know it’s the running joke of the video of “Mark gives terrible animal survival advice on purpose”, and most snakes are really hard to spot but... BRUH... the boys are in the California woods; where the nope rope they’ll likely encounter is fucking THIS...
Tumblr media
For those who aren’t aware, that Unus Annus-styled noodle is a California Kingsnake; one of the most common snake species where Mark and Eef have literally set up camp. (And for those who might be worried, Cal Kings are thankfully nonvenemous and utterly harmless, so our two beloved idiots are in no danger should they encounter one.)
So... yeah.. I don’t think you’re gonna have a hard time spotting one of these things Markimoo... 😂

Picture centaurs domesticating dogs, cats, and small pythons/nonvenemous snakes for various purposes. Also maybe bears? Like centaurs are probably big enough that they could give that a go.
Dogs, cats, snakes would be a maybe. I don’t know how well non-avian reptiles would take to domestication, but they could probably be handy for pest control. Certainly would do less ecological damage than cats. Dogs are always useful for various jobs, probably they’d mostly be guard and herding animals for centaurs, since they’re unlikely to be food or hunter.
Bears... I’ll be honest I’ve never seen the appeal of domesticating bears? I mean I guess if you’re looking for a war animal they’d be great, just sic them on the enemy, but beyond that? What are you going to do with them in your down time? Another guard animal? Seems a bit extreme. Of course I guess if you include other mythical creatures it would be less so, don’t want a hydra eating the babies...
In a high magic setting then, yeah maybe bears. Otherwise I don’t think so. It’s not a size matter it’s a disposition and diet. Bears have pretty much none of the traits that make an animal a likely target for domestication and while it’s possible it’d be difficult, dangerous, and take a long time. Though magic would probably help that along.

Many nonvenemous snakes share markings with venomous ones. With them the windows truly are the "eyes to the soul"
Non-venemous northern water snakes look similar to cotton mouths but are very gentle and cautious. They help keep ecosystems balanced by eating toads, frogs, and salamanders to give more room for the fish.

Darn, so I cant have a garter or ribbon snake as a pet because they're banned in NYC since they have a "duvernay's gland". So unfortunately they're out :( Which sucks cause they're the easiest of the insect/worm/fish-eating snakes to keep, at least partially because they are fairly popular captive bred snakes.
Ring necks might be allowed because they dont have the gland, even tho they're still considered mildly venomous (but they're very, very smol, smaller than garter snakes), but they're supposedly hard to keep alive, and usually arent captive bred, which means they're more skittish or difficult to feed, handle, etc...
green snakes are nonvenemous and small, and they're insect eaters. But again they're not usually captive bred, and bc they're wild caught can be skittish about handling and such....but I do like both species.
Ringnecks only need a 10-15gal tank at most, greens probably 20-30gal (though babies to yearlings need 5-10gal) and are more climbing oriented, so a taller tank rather than wide for them. Ringnecks need to eat more often and are somewhat harder to feed supposedly, I think greens like crickets and are bigger so feeding is more spaced out. but i didnt research them as much as garters...

Start your engines, here come the racers! The blue racer (Coluber constrictor foxii) and the eastern yellowbelly racer (Coluber constrictor flaviventris) are both subspecies of Coluber constrictor, the eastern racer. Blue racers can be found in the midwest US, from Iowa to Ohio. The eastern yellowbelly racer has a slightly larger range, from Montana eastward to Iowa, down south towards Texas and Louisiana, and with a few isolated populations found in Canada. Both subspecies are quick, shy snakes that seem to prefer to avoid human interaction whenever possible, and willing to bite if handled (both the blue racer and eastern yellowbelly racer are nonvenemous). Both snakes are named for their coloration--blue racers are known for their blue or gray scales on their back and sides, fading to white on their bellies, and for the 'mask' of dark black scales going back from their eyes. Eastern yellowbelly racers are typically gray on their backs and sides, with yellow belly scales. However, juvenile eastern yellowbelly racers are typically tan or cream colored, with brown or gray blotches across their body, and their color will gradually change as they age and shed their skin.

this chick’s name is Bansealgaire, a member of a species known as Angfemin, and she’s somewhat based off the burmese python. she’s nonvenemous and what not, but her large stature makes her fairly threatening to anyone shorter, even if she doesn’t mean it. she’s quite nice, really. so long as you’re not a monster, that is.
she was training to join the war, to join her elder sister, but the war actually ended before she could enlist in the gsa. her sister actually died in the war, so she’s trying her best to avenge her sister by killing monsters and what not.
Bansealgaire is a physically tough cookie, with lots of training behind her. she’s fairly fast and her aptitude with blades (she prefers longswords and what not, though) can make her quite scary. however, with the fact that her eyes are moreso on the sides of her head than the front, it does put her at a slight disadvantage for battles that are head-on.
