How is nonvocal any different then nonverbal? The words have the same meaning???

No, they don't.

Being nonverbal is something caused by a difference in how the neurons develop in the brain, particularly in the area of the brain responsible for speech. It is a term used bodily, and it indicates a pattern over a long period of time.

Nonvocal is simply when someone is incapable of speech. Either temporarily or not. Anything can cause one to be nonvocal. It does not have a specific origin.

I coined the term nonvocal in order to respect the nonverbal community and their reasonable demand for others to use a different word. Nonverbal means a specific thing. Nonvocal is a term made to be vague and broad on purpose.

Been a minute. Here to post my finished project of sorts, a quick little 49-set of text emojis meant for speech loss usage. I made these in mind with Discord use specifically but they should be able to fit anywhere you can use them or apply them. I did do some reading before making and posting this. This is a new thing to myself specifically and while I specifically myself may not need them too much, if it helps anyone or anyone uses it for anything then I think that's more than worth it.

No credit needed, if you want to then that's appreciated, if you have any ideas or recommendations feel free to send them my way because it's likely there's a wide range this doesn't cover but I still want to get it out. Please direct any feedback/requests/corrections in my askbox.

We’ve got one child alter who’s semi-vocal (mostly nonvocal), so most of the time they can’t and don’t talk because it’s too difficult. Like about 98% of the time they can’t talk.

But when they do speak? That 2% of the time? They say the most intelligent stuff in the most eloquent way. Like they’ll say some shit about politics, science, or religion using long words I don’t understand in the slightest, and that’s the only sentence they’ll say for like two weeks.

talking for people with sm

⚠️long post. mostly advice for OTHER ppl

don’t speak for people with sm unless we ask you to. asking may or may not be obvious.

2 examples of good and bad ways to do it:

1/when i was in school, one time there was a supply teacher (i know), and i was mute. bolt of ice-cold fear when straight through my body. couldn’t move ANYTHING. my eyes couldn’t even look up from the spot where they’d landed. but a couple of classmates told her i was in and even spelt out my (dead)name for her (wasn’t out). angels. 

2/one time, went to doctor with someone there to talk for me. gave them permission to use deadname because otherwise it would confuse doctor/i didn’t wanna be outed. thing is: deadname was pretty genderneutral, and i had not given them permission to misgender me too. but they did, because they assumed it was an all-in-all kind of deal. they only did this because they had the power to represent me, and they took the liberty of representing me beyond my expressed wishes. devils. 

2nd example is bad conduct. when we let you speak for us, this gives you all the power over our voice. do not abuse it, even in good will. 

🌹when you can plan in advance, do:

ideally, the person with sm will inform you first of what to say/not say. do not take the liberty of going off script with this. you represent our interests, and we cannot stop you from misrepresenting us.

🌹when you can’t plan in advance:

the not so ideal situation is that it’s ad hoc like the first example. in this case, person with sm may eye you/look to you. speak for them, and if you don’t know exactly what they would want you to say, go with the best of your understanding of their wishes. 

🌹look to them for guidance ALWAYS:

do not assume that just because you’re talking for them, that they are not the ones who are having the conversation. this is still their conversation to have.

🌹do not require them to communicate:

when i say stick to what they’ve told you to say, i do not mean that when asked to improvise you defer back to them. looking to them for guidance should not involve requiring that they communicate in any way for you to make the judgement on what they want. 

🌹for example: ordering for someone in a restaurant and server says “we’re out of x. we have y or z?” ask “would you like y?” (or something less direct such as generally stating: “well i think they’d like y…” and looking to them), directing the least attention possible to them is important to aid with anxiety, but this shouldn’t undermine their autonomy.

🌹if they can’t nod:

go with your gut (for minor decisions. again, do not take the liberty of making major decisions, or decisions in cases where they could be very upset with an option, for them). if they can’t nod, do not WAIT for an answer (you will be there a long time) and do not rely on them being able to give an answer for you to make decision. go with their interests.
