Happy birthday, Norma Tanega! (January 30, 1939 – December 29, 2019)
"I always played for personal joy, and that could make things difficult. Music is for pleasure. I was never good at business. . . . I never wanted to be a serious artist because I like to laugh too much." (x)

5/5/22.
Bandcamp's Maria Barrios posted this article about Norma Tanega - a Filipino-Panamanian-American folk artist from the 1960s (born in Long Beach, CA). She had a minor hit with the charming and catchy "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog". She moved to London and met Dusty Springfield. They were together for several years.
Norma finally returned to California and taught for years at Claremont College and Cal Poly Pomona. She mostly was a visual and experimental artist.
Anthology Recordings (Brooklyn, NY) is releasing her complete studio and demo works. The studio work tends to be more poppy with moments of folk. The demo is pure folk in the vein of Shirley Collins and Vashti Bunyan.
I was smitten by these songs the moment I heard them. This short documentary give an idea of the kind of person Norma was - brilliant, and full of life.
