Actually a really slow film. Much better off reading or watching a doc on the characters. I don't even think some of the story is fairly accurate.

#the saint #the crooked ring #1965 #leslie charteris #leslie norman #terry nation #roger moore #walter brown #tony wright #meredith edwards #jean aubrey #nosher powell #john tate #barry linehan #irvin allen #doris hare #macdonald hobley #a solid Nation episode which looks to be a fairly faithful adaptation of a Charteris novella (The Masked Angel) albeit with regular book #pals Hoppy and Patricia Holm swapped out for Tony Wright's old friend of Simon‚ and Aubrey as his fiancée. a couple of notable things give #this a splash of depth not always found in these episodes; the intro scene at a boxing gym features multiple actors of colour among the #trainers and trainees‚ which is a nice bit of realism the Saint doesn't always manage. even better‚ Irvin Allen gets a decently written and #verbose (if short lived) role as the black boxer whose death sparks off the main adventure. nosher powell had been a professional boxer #himself‚ retiring just a few years earlier after an unrelated injury‚ but was most active as a stuntman and fight arranger; nice to see him #really exercise his acting chops for once as the slightly needy boxing baddy. his trainer is Walter Brown‚ an australian‚ and so Powell and #Linehan's minder character appear to have both been written as Australian too (they both make half hearted attempts at accents that don't #really stick). Hobley appears to be playing himself (he was a longstanding presenter and announcer for both ITV and the BBC) in the first #fight scene. imdb claims that Alan Bennett (yes that one) is among the reporters at the final fight‚ uncredited. it's actually about the #third or fourth ep they've claimed Alan did extra work on but i really scoured the scene this time and absolutely cannot spot him. the #obvious conclusion is a mistake or a an extra with the same name (particularly as the Fringe show was well known by 65) but i do find the #image of the slightly fey yorkshire intellectual dithering around in the background of an ITC beat em up to be irresistible
