In April, 1977, Florida State Representative Paul Nuckolls wanted to make it a misdemeanor to harm, harass, or capture a Skunk Ape. Part of the bill read that “Any person taking, possessing, harming or molesting any anthropoid or humanoid animal which is native to Florida, popularly known as the Skunk Ape, or doing any act reasonably capable of harming or molesting such animals" would be charged with the misdemeanor. However this bill never passed, as it was withdrawn before a vote could be made by the House.

CM - Sasquatches.
Tumblr media
With this commission, I was pretty much given the freedom to run wild with ideas. We needed to find a way to have sasquatches fit into a futuristic setting for the welevos universe so we came up with the idea to make them a solarpunk species.
These sasquatches are very close to nature, but also embrace innovative technology. Their accessories and clothes are made from materials such as hemp, rope, wicker and a lot of their jewellery is crafted from seeds and leaves, but they also wear various solar-powered gadgets.
The one on the left is an entomologist who uses small insect drones to help him with his study of insects and how they interact with the biome as a whole.
The one on the right is a travelling elder who spreads her knowledge of nature and technology among younger generations. She has a robotic leg and the robot parrot on her staff is neurally linked to her solar-panel headdress. The parrot helps her with her memory issues as she ages so she can effectively pass on her knowledge of crafting and gadgetry.
With the welevos in general, I'm trying to find a way to have designs inspired by a mix of different cultures so that I am not lifting from one culture wholesale, sort-of similar to how The Last Airbender approached their design of different cultures. It's easy to fall into the trap of cultural appropriation and using tired tropes/cliches often seen in media, so I'm always open to constructive criticism when it comes to breaking these habits. Even with all of the research I do, there will always be blind spots.

The Goatman
The Goatman is a half-goat, half-man hybrid cryptid known to haunt a bridge and its surrounding woods in Maryland, United States. The goatman’s background is identical to any other cryptid in that there are many different iterations of it. One of the more common versions is that the goatman was originally a black goat farmer from the 1800s that was hung from the bridge he now haunts. Another is that he was formerly a scientist at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, where he experimented on goats but mutated into an insane half-goat mutant during a freak accident. Either way, a man dealt with goats closely near the general Beltsville area.
The Goatman’s physical description also has some variation, but in all versions, the Goatman can be somewhat related to the mythological satyr, who has the lower half of a goat and the upper half of a human. Though, the Goatman is said to be a giant at over 7 feet tall and demonic in appearance. The Goatman is also said to be aggressive and territorial, attacking both animals and humans.
Some people link the Goatman to the Waterford Sheepman, a creature said to terrorize Waterford, PA, in the 1970s. The Sheepman is allegedly a giant humanoid sheep standing at least 7 feet tall and having massive horns, similar to the Goatman. The Sheepman apparently lurked around farm fields in the town of Waterford, stalking both animals and humans. The Goatman was also linked to a beast seen in 2012 known as the Pope Lick Monster. There are various reports of this creature seen under a bridge in the town it haunted, as well as an abandoned trestle. Similar to the Goatman, this beast is rumored to have been a goat farmer who sold his soul to the Devil for either immortality or dark magic abilities.
The most recent alleged sighting of the Goatman is from 2015, when several people claimed to have “photographic evidence” of the beast, sparking new hunts and investigations. Though, I could not find this evidence.
The bridge that the Goatman is said to haunt in the Maryland woods has been claimed by the co-hosts of Buzzfeed Unsolved, Ryan and Shane. This bridge is now informally called the Goatman’s Bridge and Ryan and Shane’s Bridge.

Ok this is based off the "hears a creepy noise from the woods while camping template" but I just thought of the dumbest idea
Marty is camping and a wendigo call him "chicken" from the forrest and he does his whole "nobody calls me chicken" bit and immediately gets killed

It is thought that a mysterious creature known as the Lusca lives in marine sinkholes called blue holes. The specific blue holes that the Lusca is said to call home are located near Andros, an island in the Bahamas. It is described as being an enormous octopus, sometimes with the head of a shark. The Lusca is anywhere between 75 and 200 feet long, has razor sharp teeth, and tentacles. Some stories say that the Lusca even has the ability to change color in order to camouflage itself. It is said that the beast swims in hiding through the underwater tunnels that make up the blue holes until it breaks the surface to destroy ships and feast on fishermen.

The Flatwoods Monster
The Flatwoods Monster is a West Virginian folk story that famously appeared on September 12, 1952. Side note, why is it always West Virginia/New England? The Mothman and the Jersey Devil are both from this general area too. Anyway, this 1952 incident is the primary sighting of this beast. It was sighted in the town of Flatwoods, hence the name.
It all started when brothers Ed and Freddie May and their friend Tommy Hyer saw an unidentified pulsing red streak, a UFO if you will, cross the sky. This red light seemed to crash on a nearby farm, so the trio ran to fetch the May brothers’ mother to go check it out with them. Three other boys, one being 17-year-old National Guard member Gene Lemon and another bringing his dog, came along to see what happened. Lemon led the group into the nearby woods when he saw “what appeared to be a pair of bright eyes in a tree,” according to an article by the History channel. He understandably freaked out, screaming and falling back when he realized he was looking at not just a pair of eyes but an entire monster- the Flatwoods Monster. The monster was approximately 10 feet tall, with a spade-shaped head that seemed to glow green and a blood-red body, according to the same History article. The story wasn’t taken very seriously by the police, but the local and national news picked it up all the same. While there were many skeptics, there were more people in hysterics over the story; the Flatwoods Monster appeared in an era full of hysteria, given the Cold War was occurring and fears of atomic bombs ran rampant.
Though the police largely ignored the Flatwoods incident, the U.S. Air Force did not. Air Force pilots had reported various strange incidents, prompting the military branch to form a UFO inquiry categorized under the larger Project Blue Book. This project is a now-declassified project that investigated UFO sightings; the project made an investigation into the Roswell Incident and an inquiry into the Flatwoods Monster, according to the aforementioned History article. However, I could not find any mention of this inquiry on the National Archives website, where the declassified records from the Bluebook can be found.
Nowadays, the Flatwoods Monster remains one of the most famous American folklore stories, even inspiring the design of “Them” from the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The never formally-named creatures were written into the game due to a recent surge in UFO sightings in Japan, where the game’s developer Nintendo is based.
