Didn’t the American mafia just merge with the government and inner cities crime is just there to make sure civilians runs to the government?
Trying to get my history right
Not quite right, the Mafia and the Government worked together, the Mafia wasn't an ally of the Fed, it was a tool of convenience during WWII and the cold war.
Operation Underworld was the United States government's code name for its co-operation with the Irish Mob, the Italian Mafia, and Jewish organized-crime figures from 1942 to 1945.
The operation aimed to counter Axis spies and saboteurs along the U.S. northeastern seaboard ports, to avoid communist union strikes, and to limit theft by black marketeers of vital war supplies and equipment.
For instance, in preparation for the 1943 allied invasion of Sicily, Lucky Luciano allegedly provided the US military with Sicilian Mafia contacts, known as operation Husky.
They even enlisted the Mafia to assassinate Fidel Castro.
Making sure inner city residents ran to the government was always a goal of government, the Mafia however preferred to keep issues local, they'd rather people come to them over the government.
That isn't to say Mafia men never went into government, but to say they merged is pushing it.

It’s Day 36 of the Windy Wessagusset Wimple of 2024. The wind was out of the north northwest at the 11mph at 9am. The temperature was 31° and it felt like 22°. I used the Medium Purple color of Red Heart Super Saver yarn to indicate the wind was out of the north northwest. I worked my stitches in stockinette stitch to show the wind speed was between 10 and 19mph. It was a beautiful, sunny day in Wessagusset today. We had another trip to Boston, but traffic was easy, so it was great. Northeastern won their first round in the Beanpot. Go Huskies! Be safe out there!

Day 21
We started our morning by reviewing our second to last case study. After our discussion the team headed to breakfast to get ready to head out for the day. Quickly following we visited a social enterprise that is looking to revive the Channapatna toy craft. Their name is the Varnum Craft Collective and they are known for their artisanal products that have high gloss and bright colors. My family should be looking forward to a couple of gifts from them later this year.

For lunch we went to Toit’s Brewpub to meet with other Northeastern Alumni. Unfortunately, no fellow huskies were spotted but we did meet Brahm Sharma. He was the first person that hired Duane to be a professor and therefore he can take partial credit for the India dialogue! After this the group split up to explore Bangalore on their own. Some got massages, others took a nap, and some explored the city further. My group skateboarded with locals, checked monuments, and walked through the Bangalore Palace. On our way home our taxi driver showed us some in-person marketing skills by driving us directly to his store rather than our destination. After all these case studies I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of that strategy yet.

The team persevered through this week’s classwork and has high morale for Jaipur and Delhi. We have heard that Jaipur is the best place for shopping. For the next three days we will really put our education to use and haggle for the lowest prices. Time to make our parents proud!

Sicily ‘43: The First Assault on Fortress Europe by James Holland
Spare a thought for the Italians. For all that Second World War historiography has obsessed with conflict between the US and the British, relations between the Axis were infinitely worse. The Germans treated the Italians - indeed, as they treated their other European allies - with such barely concealed contempt that it beggars belief. Of course, on the internet, ‘Italy Bad’ is a bit of a joke - in real life, the consequences of this contempt were very real for Italian soldiers and civilians; and while the enslavement of Italian prisoners and the massacre of Italian citizenry were in the future in the summer of 1943, the Axis conduct of the defence of Sicily clearly show an alliance in its death throes.
James Holland is an extremely talented wordsmith, and it shows through in Sicily ‘43, which intertwines ‘top down’ (that is, generals and commanders) and ‘bottom up’ (soldiers and civilians) history quite skilfully. This is a very accessible book that treats its subjects with appropriate sympathy, and it brings to life the myriad problems of fighting a campaign in rugged terrain without modern roads vividly. While much has been made of the ‘race for Messina’ (which as Holland demonstrates was mostly in Patton’s head) and the apparently plodding advance of the Eighth Army, the sheer difficulty of dislodging German forces from hill after hill is made abundantly clear. It seems every major town in the northeastern corner of Sicily had to be wrestled out of Axis hands, and with armour difficult to employ in Sicily, it was largely up to the infantry to do the wrestling. With this in mind, it becomes remarkable that the Allies managed to capture the island in just thirty-eight days - and to do so while consistently taking less casualties, even against crack Fallschirmjagers. (Air and artillery superiority certainly play a part here, but its still worth noting.)
A large part of Holland’s thesis in this book is that the Allied commanders - in particular Sir Harold Alexander, who gets particular praise - have been a bit hard done by by historians, and that for the most part, the Invasion of Sicily was well planned and well executed. I haven’t read enough about Husky to comment on that (although there’s probably a Cornelius Ryan book on the subject), but he makes his case for the Allied leadership well - with the notable exception of the airborne landings, which come in for a lot of criticism. Considering the results, and particularly what happened to the gliders of the 1st Airlanding Brigade, it’s very hard to argue with him.
I’m sure a lot of people could find fault with Sicily ‘43, especially if they’re not Alexander fans, or if they wanted a ‘harder’ campaign history, or if they think it’s a bit too reactive to the Ryan/Hastings version of history. Personally, I recommend it. It’s an excellent overview of the campaign from all sides, with a good choice of viewpoints from the ground. It’s certainly an excellent refresher after reading about the Gallipoli Campaign.

Hi! I have a question, are Siberian huskies common in Siberia? 😂 Like, is it possible to see them on the street?
This breed originated in Northeastern Siberia, but those were dogs for hunting and sledge rides. When huskies were introduced to the United States, American breeders improved the exterior and made it a show dog and companion dog. That new breed is known today as Siberian huskies, and yes, they have become popular in Russia since the end of 1990-s.
That original breed is still used as working dogs in Siberian Far North.
To be honest, I saw more huskies here in Canada than in Russia.
If I ever get a dog, it will be a husky - I love them! (don't tell my cats!)
