Satellite image from GOES 17 satellite taken on 09/05/2020 at 21:30:31UTC. You can see the intensity of the fires burning in Northern California at that time, especially the Creek, August Complex, Bear, and Slink. You can also see burn scars visible from earlier fires such as the LNU and CZU complexes. Also visible via the GOES geostationary lightning mapper are 2 spots of lightning activity within the Creek fire plume at this time. Fire Perimeters are as of 12/4/2020 showing the full extent these fires grew to.

I’ve drive along Latrobe Road through El Dorado and Amador Counties and have always imagined how beautiful it would be to hike back away from the road. And this past summer I finally learned that it was truly possible. The El Dorado Trail is about 30 miles long and runs from the county line all the way up to Placerville. Truly a gold country blessing. While it can be a little hard to find, once on the trail it is a journey of walking along the hills under oak trees and among grass. We only hiked seven miles round trip but there was so much to explore from seeing lots of cows to walking along the rail road tracks, visiting this part of gold country was a real treat.

Excerpt from this story from Yale Climate Connections/EcoWatch:
Until recently, giant seaweed called bull kelp formed lush underwater forests in northern California's coastal waters. These kelp forests have long provided critical habitat for many species like salmon, crabs, and jellyfish.
But now just a few patches of bull kelp remain.
"It's very desolate looking," says Meredith McPherson of UC Santa Cruz.
She was part of a team that studied satellite images of about 200 miles of California coastline. They found that starting in 2014, the area covered by kelp dropped by more than 95%.
She says the die-off was driven in part by an underwater heat wave, which depleted nutrients in the water and made it harder for the kelp to grow.
Compounding the problem, populations of purple sea urchins, which eat kelp, have exploded in the region.
In coming decades, more marine heat waves are expected.

#finishedbooks Travels with Charley In Search of America by John Steinbeck. Found this at the liquor store for 50 cents and was really just surprised to find a Steinbeck book I hadn't read. This is nonfiction which I really hadn't read any, but turns out he actually wrote quite a lot. It is a memoir written by Steinbeck at age 58 in the fall of 1960 about getting in a car with his dog and traveling America for half of year. Obviously not the fiction and impact of Kerouac's "On the Road", but there is charm here in its honesty with just the thoughts of an aging man and his dog reflecting on (then) contemporary America. It became more of an exploration on the nature of journeys and how they are things in themselves... that is, it isn't people who take trips but trips that take people. He actually got his dog in France so it understood French commands and was a native breed. Was thinking of my two Japanese dogs and if I ever did this it would be an easy choice as taken both would drive me crazy haha...would definitely leave the shiba at home. He went along the northern US then went down Washington, Oregon, and Calfornia and across Texas through the south and back up the I-95 from Montgomery, Alabama to upstate NY where it started. The trip was more solitary in its onset before getting into the American south...where specifically in New Orleans his trip started to get ugly. He went to see school integration where apparently every morning these mothers went to the school to scream explicits at the one little black girl who went to school everyday. He describes as a sort of ritual with these crowds of southerners walking as if there were a live fire in progress and out would come this little black girl and at one point he noticed her do a little hop skip jump something every child her age would do before the girl straighten up as if remembering all these adults around screaming a denial of her humanity. I guess it is one of these things we know just the manner he described really compounded the craziness of it all. He also commented on how once in the south this bizarre repetition of white southerns saying, "Oh hey it's a dog! I thought you had a nigger in there." He commented that the word seemed so terribly important to them that in any opportunity no matter how inapplicable had to be applied as a kind of safety word that they all had to cling to lest some structure would collapse if not. Picking up a few hitchhikers, one commented his pride in those moms doing their duty as if their existence hinged on it. He of course kicked the guy out of the car, but it hints at this sentiment that really has just been an evolution of semantics "doing some sort of duty", the forced racial jokes even when not at all applicable, and this us versus them life or death sort of notion completely disregarding the fact they are the majority...that comes down to Baldwin's sentiment that...they need it. After leaving Alabama he just decided his trip was over and got this tunnel vision home ending not only the trip, but also his book rather abruptly. The writing grew more sparse and less colorful...that is what hate begets.

Both Northern and Southern California are under siege. Could this have been prevented (hint- not by driving a 'green' car)?

o h geez, ok I guess I’m just doing fucking all of them! xD @poetbfs @empress-of-cornelia @chicken-huggit @targaryenkid @snaggteeth thanks so much for asking! ♡ put under a readmore cause of course it’s a longass post lmao
1) What do you and your f/o(s) do on a rainy day? I love to watch/listen to the rain, so I’d set up my drafting table next to the biggest window and just draw! Engie would be doing his own thing in his workroom but occasionally come out to sit next to me and see what I’ve been drawing, or we’ll both take a break and snuggle up together with hot drinks! ♡
2) Do you have any pet with your f/o(s)? When we met I had a cat named Taffy that he was pretty indifferent to, but we’d eventually have a couple of dogs! and I hc that he grew up around horses and knows how ride and to take care of them so we might even have one of those in the future! It’d be really romantic to just ride together with my arms wrapped around his chest resting my head between his shoulder blades and pressing a kiss to the back of his neck once in a while to make him blush! U w U
3) What was your first date like? It was sweet! We went out for a malt and then to a movie, he seemed really nervous for the first half of the night, but eventually he became more comfortable and we had a really wonderful time.
4) Has your f/o ever bought/won you something? he’s really thoughtful with the gift-giving thing so usually when he comes across something pretty that reminds him of me he gives it to me, whether it be a flower or a pretty rock (he knows I like those).
5) Does your f/o ever get flustered by something you do? not to sound conceited but try everything? xD I’m just weak for the idea of engie just being a huge doof around me because he’s just too flustered all the time. A smile, a giggle, something dumb I said, staring at him while he works on something, all these things make his heart race!
6) Have you ever cosplayed with your f/o(s)? absolutely not!
7) What was your first kiss like? it was REALLY awkward, but it was lovely. It was actually at the end of our first date! He walked me home like the gentleman he is and when we got to the door he asked if he could give me a goodnight kiss! > w < His rough hand cupping my cheek, the scratch of his stubble, the slight chappedness of his lips, all of these things so distinctly him became intoxicating. It didn’t last too long, just enough, and we were definitely blushing like kids for the rest of the night haha.
8) Have you gone on vacation with your f/o(s)? not yet, we’ve both got pretty demanding jobs but it’s definitely something that we’d like to do one day. I’ve always wanted to see Mexico and get in touch with my roots so it would probably be there or someplace in northern calfornia for camping.
9) Would you ever have children with your f/o(s)? oh HELL yes!!! I love kids, and engie strikes me as someone who would want a big family so I decided we’re gonna have at least three kids. Two boys and a girl, I’m still developing them and trying to get their designs down but their names are Clifford (goes by Cliff), Grant, and Lenora (goes by Lenny).
10) Have you introduced your f/o(s) to your family? my self insert for tf2 doesn’t have any family except for Scout who’s like a brother to me, and he already knows Engie because they work together. In fact we actually might not have met if it weren’t for him. xD I really like the idea that they’re moderately close friends and because Scout is most likely the youngest of the mercs and the most foolish, Engie kinda feels the need to look after him whenever he can.
11) What is it like to live with your f/o(s)? really cozy! I love him so much, and being able to fall asleep resting my head on his chest and wake up with him every morning is??? the best?? ; w ; He likes to whistle when he’s busy doing something, so I can tell which room he’s in at any given time and I love to just,, come up behind him and wrap him up in my arms and just breathe him in!!!
12) Do you play any games together? not really! I don’t play all that often and neither does engie.
13) What’s your f/o(s) favorite thing about you? probably my dedication? I would do anything for him because he does so much for me! and if not that then maybe my kindness, I’ve always tried to be as nice as possible to people and I feel like I gel with most as a result! just like how he’s not hard to get along with due to his laid back personality.
14) What’s a normal text conversation between you and your f/o(s)? he doesn’t really like to text so it’d only really be to make simple plans and his responses are typically short and straightforward.
15) When did you realize you were in love with your f/o(s) and vise-versa? for him it was love at first sight, when I introduced myself he was so blushy and he kinda fumbled over his words, it was the cutest thing ever! The more we worked together the more I found myself falling for him too, his demeanor, his intelligence, his passion, his down-to-earthness, everything about him made me fall deeper and deeper!!! ♡ ♡ ♡
16) What was your worst date like? it was probably a time where some merc nonsense interrupted us and caused general chaos afhskajf. fires, property damage, casualties, that kind of thing when we just wanted a nice night out. xD in the end we’d still probably be able to make the most of it tho!

Early autumn in wine country calls for a quick hike at Foothill Regional Park. Leaves are just starting to change colors and the change of season is apparent. The water level is a bit low, but the start of the rainy season is near. Only a few more weeks and the rain will fall upon the trees and the lake. The red dirt trails will soon be all covered in leaves and the dirt while transform to mud. This park is so simple and such a perfect representation of trails in wine country. In an area filled with so much beauty from the vineyards, it can be hard to compare these trails.

The Shasta Daylight makes a station stop at Dunsmuir in northern Calfornia. The car above the man walking along the platform is the kitchen section of the articulated triple-unit diner. The Coffee Shop and Dining Room are on either side of the kitchen. The car nearest the camera is a chair car. Note the extra large windows, a distinguishing feature of the Shasta Daylight. Early 1950s

U.S. Court Files Lawsuit Against BitMEX Crypto Derivatives Exchange
A U.S. District Court has filed a lawsuit against controversial crypto derivatives exchange BitMEX. The plaintiff, BMA LLC, has accused BitMEX’s parent arm and operators of engaging in wire frauds, money laundering, and other illicit activities. The BitMEX team has posted no statements on the latest scandal. BitMEX has landed in yet another legal tussle. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Calfornia on Saturday filed a lawsuit against entities and individuals associated with the Seychelles crypto exchange. They include its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited, and co-founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed. Hayes and Reed also serve as BitMEX’s chief executive and chief technical officers, respectively. Allegations on BitMEX The plaintiff is a little known BMA LLC that has accused BitMEX and its operators of facilitating “a myriad of illegal activities,” including fraudulent business dealings, wire frauds, money laundering, illegal fundraisings, market manipulation, and whatnot. The lawsuit also alleged that BitMEX illegally offered its high-risk trading services to U.S. citizens. It read that the exchange reported almost 15 percent of its trading volume from the U.S. regions in 2019. That amounts to about $138 billion worth of trades that BitMEX conducted without obtaining a money transmitting license in the U.S. “Therefore, according to Defendants’ own data, Defendants’ unlicensed money transmitting  business admittedly processed, on average, $3 billion of illegal and unlicensed money transfers each day,” the filing read. Overleveraged Trades, Insider Trading BMA’s lawsuit further dwelled into the BitMEX high-leverage trading facilities that allow traders to place bets up to 100 times that their original capital. The plaintiff wrote that the exchange uses “BXBT index price for highly liquid derivatives” that takes prices from “two or three illiquid spot exchanges.” The “fraudulent” system enables manipulators and money launderers to skip detection. They get to open unlimited “check-free trading accounts” without any withdrawal and deposit limits. The unrestricted access allows the BitMEX system to cause “overloads,” wherein it accepts some orders and reject others during broader market moves. “[It] causes the most liquidations all make BitMEX an exquisite “designer” tool for unsavory actors to manipulate cryptocurrency markets,” alleged BMA. The accusation served as a reminder to BitMEX’s admittance of insider trading back in April 2018. It noted that all the defendants had agreed that the exchange operates its for-profit trading desk via its employee Nick Andrianov. The counter tracks customers’ existing trading positions, stop-loss orders, liquidation prices, and open orders. The strategy gives BitMEX an unfair trading advantage over small retail traders, often leading to massive losses. BitMEX has lost half of its market share in the past six months. A massive crypto withdrawal ensued after a “technical issue” on the exchange crashed the bitcoin price by more than 50 percent overnight. BTCUSD plunged massively on March 12 after BitMEX broke | Source: TradingView.com The exchange is also facing its early investors in a separate $540 million lawsuit. The plaintiffs in the case have accused the exchange and CEO Hayes of tricking them into offering stakes in the company. NewsBTC has reached BitMEX for comments and is awaiting a response.  Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on Unsplash from CryptoCracken SMFeed https://ift.tt/2ZezOb2 via IFTTT
