this male northern cardinal is a bright yellow instead of the species’ typical red. this bird was spotted by amateur birdwatcher jeremiah vreeland in port st lucie, florida. this bird shows an example of xanthochromism, where a typically red pigment is muted and displays as yellow. it’s believed that this extremely rare mutation has very low odds, and this cardinal is probably one of less than 10-15 individuals on the planet with this appearance.

Now that the cold has arrived there is little open water in the wild. This diverse assortment of birds is sharing an opening in this flowing stream.

This year, there seems to be
an abundance of Cardinals in my yard, something that I am not complaining about at all! From afar they all kind of look alike but up close, their individuality becomes more obvious. I believe these are all different birds. So similar but also so different.

Male cardinals are beginning to look brighter and brighter, the closer we come to spring. Healthy males are newly molted, with bright new feathers.
Soon, pair-bonded males will start mating rituals with their long-term mates, while young, single males will compete to find a life-long companion.
Northern Cardinals are especially monogamous. They are never too far away from each other.
