horror and psychological thriller in tgcf was done so incredibly well that if the beautiful and touching love story wasn’t incorporated into the book, I would be fully convinced mxtx decided to switch to another genre.
no one really talks about her fascination with the descent to madness and the morals surrounding humanity. at least one main character of each book goes through it. for lbh, it stemmed from the fear of abandonment and the emptiness that follows when the people you care most about decide you aren’t worth being chosen. for wwx, it was the outside in. society deemed him a monster so he had no other option available to him. no way to prove them wrong, and no way to convince himself he’s not either. anything he would do, despite his most well meaning, sincere, and self sacrificing motives, will always be twisted by the world who likes to paint others the devil. for xl…it was such a defeating combination of the two that it was near impossible for him find a way out. no family nor friend to turn to, no place to hide or run away, continuously forced to confront dilemmas beyond anyone’s capacity that sawed away at his already frayed sanity. worse was him having to confront godhood doesn’t mean omnipotent, nor does ascension mean free of suffering.
the way i choose to see it as this is her commentary on human nature, in both freedom and fallibility. ascend to heaven as a human, yet those in heaven are still human. wants, desires, fears, traumas, love, hate, selfishness, self-lessness, kindness, compassion, sacrifice, loss, hubris, duty, family, friends, hierarchy, power, and, above all, free will are all things that make humans what they are. are we wwx and xl? sacrificing ourselves time and time again only to have it all thrown back at our face? never once chosen or understood unless when it’s something short of a miracle? or are we the masses? afraid of the sinister, the disease, the wars? afraid for our young and old, for the talented and lame? for our lives and legacy? what are we, if not forever doomed to be helplessly flawed and hopelessly human?
the way she sees it, we have always been, and always be, both sides. because to her, they aren’t mutually exclusive, but rather each reflections of the other. both never wrong, but never quite right either. convoluted and confusing, mundane yet a tale as old as time.
mxtx writes her beautiful loves stories seamlessly. but she displays her talent best of all by weaving tales of hope and humanity into the threads.

i’m actually obsessed with pei ming and yushi huang so much. like this aromantic misogynistic man slut with a string of broken hearts behind him is rescued by a quiet, humble woman who doesn’t think about him at all and he suddenly cannot cope. he’s shaking in fear hes choking on his words he runs out of the room whenever she’s near. he wants her to fuck him so bad it makes him look stupid. insane that mxtx just pulls this bit of characterisation at the last moment and then does not elaborate. i’ve got him in my head like this

"Your Highness...do you know why I refuse to leave? My beloved is a brave, noble, gracious special someone," Hua Cheng continued. "He saved my life, and I've looked up to him ever since I was young. But I wanted to catch up to him and become even stronger for his sake. Although he might not remember me well—we never really talked—I want to protect him.” He gazed at Xie Lian. "If your dream is to save the common people, then my dream is only you." Relying on his memory, Xie Lian asked with a trembling voice, "But...you won't...be able to rest in peace...like this..?" "I pray to never rest in peace," Hua Cheng replied.
"Your Highness, I understand your everything," Hua Cheng said quietly. "Your courage, your despair. Your kindness, your pain. Your resentment, your hate. Your wisdom, your foolishness. If I could, I would have you use me as your stepping stone, the bridge you take apart after crossing, the bones you need to trample on your climb, the sinner who endures the agony of a million knives. But I know you won't allow it."
just fell to my knees in the middle of walmart

I really liked TGCF (obviously… obsessing over Qi Rong still) and I want to try MDZS but I’m put off by sex scenes. Like I want to read it because I know it’s probably really good but I don’t want the smut to ruin it for me.

I don’t ship feng xin and Mu Qing bc I think it’s just so much funnier if it’s genuinely platonic. Like imagine being that fundamentally intertwined with some guy you hate and weird intense emotion of it all isn’t even bc of sexual tension, one of you is just genuinely that bad at expressing that they want to have friends and the other is kind of dense.
Kind of like how Hua Cheng can devote his entire life to the person he loves romantically but gets real weird about friendship. Like he’s out here hyping up He Xuan and helping him in ways he would never help anyone else but Xie Lian, and actually even kind of siding with He xuan over Xie lian when it came to the revenge plot. But whenever he talks about it he gets so cagey. Like oh he just owes me money. And you keep helping him even though he doesn’t seem to be paying much of it back??? Ok. Sure.
So I think characters being weird about desiring friendships is just like a theme in this novel. (And I think Hua Cheng and Mu Qing are supposed to be parallels)
(Also, Mu Qing actually does kind of have to keep that chastity vow unlike Xie Lian. And breaking it would not represent the same things for him. For Xie Lian it’s freedom, it’s a release from this purity culture he got trapped in from a young age, he chose it and he doesn’t have to care what anyone thinks about it bc he has someone who always support and protect and love him. For Mu Qing it would probably represent the loss of autonomy and power he worked so hard to gain. Mu Qing didn’t just stumble into cultivation through means of birth the way XL did, he had to choose it and work very hard to keep choosing it. Giving any of his power away would not represent freedom for him, it would probably make him feel powerless to have to rely on other people like that. IDK I would have to reread tgcf to see if I’m fully right. I have no idea what I’m talking about I think.)

the key to understanding hua cheng’s appearance and how he occupies space is that he’s a transmasc goth who’s committed to red and silver as his aesthetic. ok. the layered hair the outfits the boots the chains. he doesn’t shave off his eyebrows and redraw them only because he is a shapeshifter and so his eyebrows grow the way he wants.

xie lian is such a beautifully complicated character. i was trying to tell my friend about tgcf and the characters and stuff but i found it so hard to fully explain xie lian? he was a crown prince that ascended to godhood but fell for protecting his kingdom. he’s a martial god but doesn’t have worshippers and won’t fight unless there’s no other options left, but loves weaponry and the practice of martial arts. nothing i say feels like it can explain his character without going on a two hour tangent that’s not gonna make sense to someone who hasn’t read the books.
