Memasuki seminggu pertama di sini, tentu mulai menemukan jalan. Mulai dihadapkan dengan tugas dan tugas. Sebagai anak bawang/magang jangan banyak menuntut, walau masih dengan ego–diri yang besar. Beruntung, di masa-masa masih menjadi anak bawang, segalanya masih dimaklumi.

Mau cerita sedikit, kemarin ketika menghantar lamaran ke institusi ini, niatnya minta/mau jadi dosen. Berhubung belum tersedianya prodi yang linier dengan background pendidikan, lantas di tempatkan di bagian yang mereka masih butuhkan sebenarnya: yaitu bagian LPPM.

Sedikit bingung, karena sejauh ini belum pernah berurusan dengan pihak/bidang tersebut. Tapi diri punya pov akan jobdesknya secara luaran. Tidak sampai ke tahap internal banget. Hanya sebatas luaran saja.

Apapun itu, sedikit lega karena setelah ditimbang-timbang, bagian ini adalah yang pintu masuk yang paling bijaksana untuk diri di masa awal-awal di sini. Agar tidak terlalu shock culture dan memahami bagaiman mekanisme di ekosistem institusi ini bekerja.

Sebagai seorang yang senang mengumpulkan ‘pengalaman’ tentu sangat-sangat senang. Karena bisa merasakan dan terjun di bidang baru, yang nantinya akan sangat-sangat sering berurusan dengan bagian ini. Diamanahkan untuk memainkan mekanismenya adalah suatu yang bisa jadi modal bagi diri kedepannya.

Beruntungnya lagi, LPPM ini berkantor di gedung biro. Sejajar dengan pejabat-pejabat kampus lainnya. Mungkin gini kali ya rasanya jadi orang dalam. Tentu sebagai penduduk gedung biro mendapat fasilitas yang lebih baik dari pada yang lainnya. Walau semuanya dalam tingkatan setara.

Masalahnya adalah, ternyata LPPM di sini masih belum ada akarnya:’) hamba harus membangun dari awal. Mulai dari menanam benih, hingga si calon pohon tumbuh. Duh, bagaimana bisa? Awalnya shock juga. Karena sejauh ini yang saya tau, LPPM itu perannya penting sekali bagi pengembangan karir para dosen. LPPM juga ambil andil yang sangat besar dalam perkembangan suatu program studi.

Saya mulai bertanya-tanya, strategi apa yang bisa saya terapkan? Bagaimana tujuan yang hendak dicapai? Hingga akhirnya saya mengambil langkah terbaik, yaitu mengikuti bagaimana instruksi saja.

Hari ini, saya diminta untuk menerbitkan ISSN untuk jurnal. Gue masih belum ngerti ini targetnya jaringannya seluas apa.

Dan ternyata bikin ISSN jurnal itu rasanya begini🙃 ga sulit-sulit amat.

Kendalanya pasti ada. Salah satunya adalah menyesuaikan budaya kerja. Sebagai orang yang kalau kerja itu berdasarkan deadline dan satsetsatset. Saya mafhum bahwa tidak semua orang punya cara kerja seperti saya. Apalagi di lingkungan yang mereka merasa berada di kawasan teritori dan merasa lebih senior.

Kadang merasa beruntung sebab punya punya sifat yang tidak peka. Hal itu memaksa orang lain juga ikut dengan alur kerja diri. Dan di sini lebih nyaman dari pada tempat sebelumnya.

Ada banyak hal yang masih harus saya pelajari tentunya. Hal-hal yang bekenaan dengan keterampilan sosial. Bekerja sama. Menjadi asisten. Semoga bisa.

Art BTEC project- Youth Culture

Throughout year 12 project I was assigned the theme of “Youth Culture”. When I think of youth culture, friendships and relationships come to mind. Through this project I explored the idea of what it feels like to be a teenager today. The first drawing is a mix of tonal pencil and digital drawing I created about relationships and how the pressure of school plays a part in them. The second painting was my outcome for the project in which I portrayed my friend and I at a party having fun and added digital elements to it later on. It explores the fun and reckless part of being a teenager. My third piece is a tonal and colour pencil drawing that shows a couple with the man falling apart in pieces with a heart attached to them. This represents a falling relationship and the pain of breaking someone’s heart. The final piece was an edit of three previous pieces of the same photo, a tonal pencil drawing, a red biro drawing, and a blue biro drawing. I combined these to look glitchy and colourful like party atmospheres.

Character Design Plan

Before going straight into designing my characters, I wanted to have a quick look examples of character ensembles focusing primarily on how their shapes and sizes complement one another to create a dynamic yet cohesive group.

I wanted to boil down the key shapes so that I had a better understanding of what tied the characters together and what set them apart. I want to make my own dynamic group of characters so I looked at the shapes and sizes of characters from cartoons that I loved at different stages of my childhood. Some of these shows tend to unite their characters with similar shapes like the simple round heads of South Park, some have iconic facial characteristic like the Simpsons. The key unifying factor is their colour palette assisted by certain types of shapes which visually tie characters together. Regular show is a good example of how breaking these unifying traits makes a character stand out, all other characters have rubber hose arms whereas Skips (the buff Yeti) has bulky round arms which sets him apart from the crowd.

Class Silhouette Exercise - I didn't spend much time on this task in lesson and only managed to play around briefly with silhouettes because at the time I didn't yet know what I would make silhouettes of in Illustrator. I made a simple blocky character and started a simple eye of Sauron design inspired by the awful cosplay in my Moodboard.

After figuring out some kind of backstory for my parade, I did three 10 - 20 minute sketches of Norse inspired characters to get to know which features stand out as Nordic/Swedish. Whilst drawing, I decided that since the parade that they are part of is some kind of re-enactment, I should not only design these cosplays in my own style but also fit them with Viking inspired armour. I still need to find a way to turn these pop culture characters into tacky cosplays which are now also suited in battle armour. This could be a little over complicated but I am going for Maximalism so at the very least it will suit that aesthetic.

I went back into Illustrator and created a Viking/Dwarf esque silhouette so that I could then create some sort of a tonal drawing building upon the shapes of the silhouette. I tweaked the pose slightly, adding a tilt to the body to put more emphasis on the war cry. I didn't spend enough time on the axe so it looks a disproportionate to the body but I might be going for stupid weapons like biros and wooden swords anyway so I'll figure it out at a later date.

This is where I am at so far into the tonal drawing, I'm trying to build up some texture and create shapes which match the blocky body I made using quadrilaterals but the arms and legs are blocky to the point that they look anatomically incorrect. I really like the design of the face and it is this sort of character design that I want to push forwards with.

The silhouette outline made things a bit limiting but it's good preparation for my parade designs.

FOLK SPEECH - aka. bugtong (in Tagalog) and Tigmu (in Cebuano). They can be talinghaga (making use of metaphor to describe intended objects), ambahan (used to express everyday experience composing of 7 syllables in a line), or tanaga (7 syllable quatrain and a definite answer) (Santiago, 2011).

FOLK NARRATIVES - are classified into three: Myth (example: Ifugao Creation; Why the B'laans Are Ignorant), Legend (The Durian Legend; Mindanao: The Origin of Its Name; The Origin of the World), and Folk Epic.

Ulaging (A Bukidnon Epic) - The term Ulaging originated from the root word legena which means voice. An epic that is intended to be sung (Saway-Llesis, 2003) and performed without the accompaniment of any musical instrument (Brandeis, 2008). The chanting of the epic is sacred which is why it cannot be done without a ritual called pamada (Saway-Llesis, 2003). This epic is composed of many episodes sung during nighttime lasting for several hours or even several nights.

Darangan (A Maranao Epic) - is one of the Philippines' longest epic telling of the history and culture of its people. It was proclaimed a "masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity" by UNESCO (Philippine Star, Dec 13, 2005).
