my spn hot takes
Rewatching spn made me realize some things lol
Tumblr media
john wasn't like... a bad parent??? he didn't do the best job he could, but he was also grieving and he'd just found out that the things that go bump in the night are real and yeah he fucked up sometimes but everyone does
dean was verbally and physically abusive to sam, jack, and cass
cass was not a hero and he was kind of a bad person. he broke sam's wall and drove him insane, he killed a bunch of people when he was "god," the leviathan arc of s7 was his fault, and he blamed sam for the apocalypse even though it was the angels who wanted it and he didn't care that dean broke the first seal even though both brothers unknowingly contributed to its start
dean was correct that they should have killed jack when he was born. he was an extremely powerful being with no knowledge of morals or control. he could have destroyed the whole world and killed countless people, as demonstrated in s14 and s15 when he was soulless. this doesn't mean that i don't love jack or that i agree with dean's treatment of him, just that dean's reasoning made sense.
it didn't make any sense that chuck became the villain. there was never any indication that chuck was malevolent or that he wanted sam and dean to suffer before the end of s14.
anyone who watched s15 and still shipped d*stiel or thought that the show was about anything other than the relationship between the brothers missed the whole point of the show. to add to that, the finale was their perfect ending. yes, it hurt to watch. knowing the permanence of dean's final death was painful, but the whole show was leading up to that. i will say that sam not going off the rails was a bit ooc considering all of dean's other deaths and i do think it would have made more sense for him to die young because he doesn't want to live without his brother. sam not looking for dean during the purgatory year made no sense.
sam was right to be angry after gadreel. dean took his bodily autonomy.
dean was never meant to have a romantic relationship with anyone. he never really understood the concept of loving someone other than sam. that isn't to say that he didn't care about other people because he did, but his whole schtick is "look out for sammy." love, for him, means sam. the two things are synonymous.
sam was fucking unhinged.
sam was always far more queercoded than dean, and people who use dean's misogyny and toxic masculinity as "proof" of dean's bisexuality are the ones who are homophobic, not the people who say that he isn't bi. sam, on the other hand, dated amy. amy was his first girlfriend, and he could never tell john or dean about her because she wasn't human. she could never tell her mom because sam was human. she literally shoved him into a closet when her mom got home. dean killed her because she wasn't human. sera gamble said herself that she intentionally queercoded sam. dean is canonically a homophobe ("dude can you be any gayer").
ship culture is toxic. i've stopped shipping in general and i prefer qpr ships instead.
d*stiel never made sense, and even if sam and dean weren't brothers, w*ncest wouldn't work. it would still be toxic af (as demonstrated by their whole relationship as brothers).
sam and dean were soulmates in the platonic sense. their whole world revolves around each other and their relationship and love for one another.
supernatural was about family, never romance.
the spn prequel makes no sense with canon.

Castiel does not need to be fixed
This is in response to a reply to one of my comments to a post. It is very long, and if anybody actually even reads it, it will probably alienate me to every kind of SPN fan—the destiel ones and the anti-destiel ones alike. But why else am I on tumblr if not to express myself?
My comment :  “Castiel doesn’t need a soul.  Also, his love for Dean doesn’t need to be fixed. and I say this as a certified Dean-critical Castiel fan.”
The reply: “How is Castiel's love of Dean not something that needs fixing? Dean abuses Castiel (and Sam, and Jack, and honestly most people he's ever met). Being in an abusive relationship is not okay, and Castiel deserves better. If you're a Castiel fan, why would you want him to love an abuser?”
The short answer is, because I believe in Castiel, completely and absolutely. I don’t see his love for Dean as needing fixing, because I see it as Castiel’s choice.  A conscious, continuous, even if painful choice.
Don’t get me wrong.  I am not someone who swoons at destiel romance. I feel very bitter about it actually.  Yet, I do believe Castiel was in love with Dean ; and I believe Dean had neither the capacity nor the interest to reciprocate even though he had some attachment to Cas. I believe Cas knew this and loved Dean anyway.  I hate how Dean belittled and disrespected Castiel; I believe Castiel’s one-sided love for Dean hurt him; I am heartbroken for his affliction, and I see it as a part of Castiel’s tragedy.  But I also believe it is part of who Castiel is, and I love him for it.
(By believe, I mean this is how I experienced and interpreted the show)
You ask “why would you want him to love an abuser?”  My dissent with label aside, it’s not about what I would want for him.  He already does.  If I dismiss his choice, if I dismiss his emotions because it didn’t suit my sensibility;  if I write off his love as him being brainwashed as if he had no agency of his own, then I would be acting like Dean Winchester.
Below I will expand on why I think his love for Dean was his choice.  Why I disagree that Castiel is some helpless victim who only loved Dean because he was broken in some way by his “abuser”.
Why I defend Castiel’s one-sided love for someone who doesn’t deserve it: Castiel loved everything.  Before he loved Dean, he loved humanity already, all on his own.   Before humanity, he loved the Neanderthals.  But think about what it means that he has watched, and  loved humanity throughout the existence of our species. Do you think when he sat on the bench and watched people with awe in his heart, he never saw children bully and victimize each other?  Do you think he never noticed the abuses, the murders, the genocides, or just the abundance of everyday wickedness of humans? He had seen everything humans are capable of. He had seen the worst of humanity, and still he marveled at their art and their poetry and their dreams (and that reverence had nothing to do with Dean either), and was willing to -- and did, repeatedly -- give his life to save humanity.  Why, then, couldn’t he love an “abuser”?   Why couldn’t he have seen the worst in Dean, and fully recognize it, and still loved him and died for him anyway?  His love for Dean is a reflection and embodiment of his love for the world.  This is why, not only I don’t want to fix his unrequited love for Dean (which Dean assuredly doesn’t deserve), I love Castiel precisely because of it.
Why I believe Castiel’s love for Dean is his choice, not because he was broken and didn’t know better:
There is a narrative that Dean removed his self-worth and made him question his own judgment, or alternatively, his deep traumas caused him to lose himself, either way, he could only turn to Dean for purpose.  I have a big problem with  this because it gives Castiel too little credit, and gives Dean too much power over him.
Castiel has more will and grit than anybody on the show.  Despite his profound self-doubt, when he believed a leader was needed to right wrongs, he stepped up (even after he wrote himself off as “not a leader” and said he always screwed things up-at least twice). He has left or gone against the Winchesters despite his love and devotion to them, when he believed he was doing the right thing (Season 6; purgatory; the angel tablet; Season 12/Kelly; he was ready to leave the Winchesters in Moriah  if Jack didn’t toss him aside forcibly). It was the same with his angel family.  These actions caused him even more guilt and self-hate, but nevertheless he acted, concretely, bravely, righteously.   His conscience and his force of will overcame his guilt, his self-doubt and his love for Dean,  over and over.
It is true that Castiel lacks self-worth, and is the “self-hating angel of Thursday”.  But to make this Dean’s "brainwashing” gives Dean undeserved weight in determining Castiel’s identity. Castiel’s self-critical nature was already evident in the 2nd Season he was on, when he called himself “poor example” of an angel. Then it was largely precipitated by release of Leviathans and the fall of angels; I of course find it unfair, but it is completely understandable that he blamed himself and saw himself as irredeemable after that.  His self-hate, too, was a part of who he is; I would even say it too was his choice in response to his circumstances.   Dean’s attitude towards him execrated it, caused him more pain, but it didn’t define him.
Castiel’s particular kind of self-hate is also not to be confused with the kind where a person refuses to acknowledge who he is (the way, for example, Dean’s self-hate makes him lash out at others without self-reflection); on the contrary, his self-hate is all about taking too much accountability for the consequences of his actions.  he took on too much blame, and he didn’t believe he deserved anything, but it doesn’t mean he lost himself. He engaged others with directness and sincerity; he openly expressed his emotions even when he received little in return; and, as mentioned above, he was fully capable of taking action according to his beliefs, fully capable of countering the weight of his self-hate.  Not only that, he turned the burden of his guilt and self-recrimination into compassion and forgiveness for others.  He beat his self-hate, it didn’t break him.   (Side-note: I don’t buy the assumption that lack of self-worth is some pathetic terminal disease of personhood; there are far worse traits a person can have than lack of self-worth or self love; the worst people in the world mostly have plenty of self-worth.)
So this is why, I do not see his love for Dean as needing to be fixed.  He chose to love Dean of sound mind and judgment.  It may make some of us angry that he deserves better, of course he does. It may also have led him to devote himself to Dean’s causes that some of us disagree with.  But to want to fix him (whether it’s this love, or even some of his other so called “issues” like his lack of self-worth)—is like wanting to fix the dark spots on the moon so it can be more “whole” and to shine brighter, or to tell the grand canyon not to allow itself to be carved by the glaciers.  Castiel is not perfect insofar as “perfect” is a limited, artificial human concept that is not applicable to this immense and ancient being.  Castiel just is. And I love every aspect of his being.
Now, just because I don’t want to fix him, doesn’t mean I am happy with how his story turned out on the show.  There are three general scenarios I’d prefer to see:
1)    The destiel fanfic way where Dean somehow reforms himself and become somewhat worthy of Castiel’s love—and then loves him back or at least treats him with care and respect.  My irritation with Dean makes this not very palatable to me, but it’s not about me or Dean; it would make Castiel happy so I would accept it.
2)     Dean dies, Castiel grieves for him, maybe even for a long time, but it doesn’t change who he is, and when he inevitably sacrifices himself again it is to save the universe, because his love was always bigger than for one man.
3)    Dean becomes a villain for real and things come to a head where Cas has to take a stand to protect Jack or for whatever counter-villainy reason, so he finally has to fight Dean.  He doesn’t stop loving Dean, and It breaks his heart, but he fights Dean with steely resolve because it’s the right thing to do.  This is my favorite version, and I have some very evil scenarios in my head.
Maybe this is what you mean by “fixing”, to imagine different outcomes?  I need to point out, however, that in all of these scenarios, I do not want to take away Castiel’s love for Dean. It is Castiel’s love.  He gets to keep it.

Honestly if I got nothing out of Jurassic World: Dominion, I got Ellie/Alan rights. I mean was the movie good? Not really. Will I rewatch it over and over again just to see how they look at each other the whole movie? Absolutely. I am above all else a hopeless romantic and for Drs. Grant and Sattler to be endgame????? Fuck me right up. Catch me reading a fanfic IDGAF.

[Image Description: Castiel from Supernatural is saying I love you, underneath is an image of Dean Winchester with the caption: “After four months of striking the WGA has a reached a tentative agreement & finalizing the contract. If all goes well writers will get to return to work with better pay and protections. They did it. Go unions”]
