urban fantasy is at its very best when its about a man who is Just Some Guy TM who gets dragged into supernatural shenanigans beyond his control.  like listen buddy this guy works at burger king or some shit, this is way beyond his paygrade and he does not want to be here At All.  his biggest strength is his midwesterner “don’t ask don’t tell” attitude about the supernatural.  he wants absolutely nothing to do with being a hero, fuck it, he just wants to be normal but instead he’s fighting cthulu in a walmart parking lot.

to that "every comic book" anon: im sorry you feel that way but i think that's like 90% just a problem of marvel and dc. if you want some comics where characters points and personalities don't get utterly fucked over (or develop in natural ways), you should look into more indie (or even just smaller publisher) stuff. those writers tend to be more passionate about actually following through properly, because it's a story they want to tell with characters they truly care about, instead of writer-of-the-week just trying to finish a quota. this isn't universally true of course but it is definitely a noticeable distinction.
depending on your taste, i would recommend:
•"Love and Rockets" by brothers Jaime, Mario, and Gilbert Hernandez (which ran for decades and actually had characters age naturally over time. this started as a fantasy sci-fi thing and eventually became more slice-of-life but it's very good, largely character-driven, and has surprisingly 3d-feeling art for how simplistic it is)
•"I Feel Sick" by Jhonen Vasquez (yes, this is the guy who created invader zim. kinda gorey but a quick read, both darkly funny and compelling, about a woman struggling with art block and mental health after a series of traumatic events. this is only 2 books long and is actually a spinoff of the 7 book "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" but that's harder to recommend to a stranger because of just how over-the-top fucked up it is. i still love jthm too but definitely look up a list of trigger warnings if you read that one).
•"Not Drunk Enough" by Tess Stone (this one has been on hiatus for years so maybe it doesn't count but there are two full books out and the first chapter of book 3, all online (ndecomic dot com). it is also kinda gorey but it was created as a metaphor for the author's feelings when he thought people would judge him for coming out as trans. he felt trapped, felt like everyone was judging him, etc so he didn't come out for a long time. that's where the whole "trapped in a building while thousands of eyes watch" thing came from)
i might come back w more recs in the future if ppl want more but i think im runnin outta space oopsies
.

What if I'm actually just a shit garbage person and a horrible trash partner/spouse and I just don't deserve to have a partner who's a decent person
I probably deserve to die alone in my apartment, missed by no one until my property management is ready to evict me

fun fact: I am a barely sentient, weak, selfish, self-pitying, lying pile of impulses, cowardice, bourbon and fat and yet somehow I don’t even have the decency to grant people the relief my absence would bring, though I could swear I’ve tried
sorry folks. I’ll keep trying.

If I had a nickel for every brightly coloured supernatural webcomic by Tess Stone I'd fallen in love with that stopped updating without any warning at a cliffhanger, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

NDE will never not be funny to us lmao
like, yeah it's well written horror and you can definitely tell the author brought some dark things to the table when writing it.
or. the first half, anyway.
it's so deeply Heccin' funny to us that this bit of visceral, oppressive horror that always felt like being enclosed and choked out by something that wanted to infect and consume the body just constant Spooks us, and then the author went on T (proud of him for that, quality work) and BAM the next chapter feels more like a romcom lmao. it goes straight from "this unholy abomination has taken root in your body and continues to grow and make you feel less and less human as it develops within you" into "hey you wanna meet my snuggly cat" and we just. that's amazing. sheer unbridled comedy from the metacontext of the story :P

gravewalks asked:
❛ i'm not drunk enough for this. ❜
Lost Meme -- @gravewalks
Nico gives the police commissioner a long look before he nudges the glass in his direction slightly. He's not entirely sure any more alcohol is going to make this any easier to understand, but less alcohol doesn't seem to be the answer either. It's times like this that Nico wishes he'd gotten better at manipulating the Mist.
Because of course he can't tell the guy the truth--that most of Manhattan had been put under a massive sleeping spell by Morpheus himself and then subsequently invaded by an army of monsters-- but he's not fully sure what he can tell the guy either. Any portion of the truth is a lot. "I know it's a lot of parking tickets, but you can just bill the Executive Suite on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building."
Also how this job got left up to Nico is anyone's guess.

i hold myself to the “no drinking until 5″ standard for the most part, but on days when I wrap up work earlier than that...like what am I supposed to do? just be conscious and sober?? with my thoughts??

anyways at the new years party i was at last night I found out that another guest is a full-time van traveller (does contract work so this is logical) and was parked outside, and, crucially, had a 19 week old black kitten in there
dear readers, i got into that van so fast. None of the stranger danger lessons stuck at all.
Sid the Kitten was a delight, and when I finally went back in the house and crashed on one of the couches, I was woken up at sunrise by my other friend's golden retriever, Zuko, who is remarkably polite but needs attention at all times.
And overall I'm counting it as a good omen for the coming year. May it be full of unexpected puppies and kittens.
