A/N: Soooooo, writing these actually gave me the best idea for a scenario 🥴 just in love with the idea of touch starved and incredibly horny Incel!Shigaraki fixating on a girl and attempting to force her into submission, only to find out she had been craving him just as much as he was

Incel!Shigaraki that notices you in public one day when he was out at the mall buying a new video game, unable to tear his eyes away from your suggestively lewd outfit, deciding that a beautiful girl dressed like that in public wanted, no needed, his greedy eyes to objectify you. Shigaraki couldn’t usually have cared less about other people when he went out in public. They didnt share the same intelligence level or tenacity he did, and besides, they would all submit to The League of Villains in due time anyways; there was no point in trying to converse with any of them. That was, at least, until he stopped by the mall one day to pick up the newest edition of a game that had just been released, and his eyes couldn’t help but lock onto your voluptuous figure. It’s not like it was his fault he was staring, in that short skirt and tight tank top you were practically naked. He could even tell you weren’t wearing a bra as his eyes followed each bounce and jiggle of your chest as you walked over to the Nintendo Switch games. Still mesmerized, he watched you from across the store, and his heart began to pick up when you bent down to retrieve Cooking Mama on the bottom row, allowing him to catch a quick glimpse of your underwear. What really sealed your fate, however, was the fact that upon meeting his eyes, you had the audacity to smirk at his actions. It was then that Tomura decided you needed to be taught a lesson.

Incel!Shigaraki who begins to stalk you in his free time, watching with distain every time he saw you talking to another guy he had never seen before Watching you giggle and playfully hit the male companion who sat next to you at the food court made Shigarakis skin boil. He knew that there was no way you were actually laughing that hard at anything that guy had to say; You were just being the slutty little girl that you were, probably craving and aching between your legs in ways that you should only be doing for him. Shigarakis grimace continued as he fumed from the corner where he sat watching, scratching at his neck and trying not to let his explosive anger get in the way of his careful planning.

“M/M Ships Smash The Patriarchy”—But Do They?

Little disclaimer first: I don’t have a problem with m/m fics or art, quite the opposite. I’m a bisexual woman, I can find the idea of m/f, f/f and m/m interesting and yes, sexually arousing (each for different reasons though). And I’m saying this so explicitly because the idea that women need to engage in mental gymnastics to justify m/m ships is relevant to this post.

So please don’t take this personally if you like m/m, especially not if what I write very obviously doesn’t apply to you. This also has nothing to do with shipping m/m as a queer person, because the context invariably changes in most cases. This post is exclusively about the “justification” of m/m ships as something that “smashes the patriarchy”.

With that out of the road:

I’ve seen so many posts stating that m/m ships are removing “the whiff of patriarchy from fandom”. That the same dynamics would be problematic in a m/f or f/f ship, but they’re less “harmful” in a m/m ship.

And yes, of course women have been bearing the brunt of these objectifying dynamics since the beginning of time, totally true. But here’s the thing:

a) Problematic dynamics are okay to explore (not necessarily to condone, they are two different things) in fanfiction; it’s happened for as long as fanfiction (no, fiction) exists. We could go off on a whole tangent about what’s “problematic” (or not) in fiction now, and I’m not overly keen on that term, but it’d lead too far because we’d need to talk about a lot of stuff that’s not really the topic of this post.

b) Problematic dynamics don’t magically change because you apply them to a m/m ship, especially if you’re a (straight) woman heavily projecting onto characters. If there’s an age gap, it stays an age gap. If there are power imbalances, they stay power imbalances. If there’s violence/objectification/whatever else going on IT STAYS THAT. The mental leap from, “Men in m/f relationships are often, either consciously or subconsciously through what society condones, the perpetrator in that particular dynamic,” to “that’s why it’s not a problem in m/m relationships,” honesty baffles me.

So my question is:

If you want to remove the “problematic whiff of patriarchy from fandom”, but you are ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY centering two MEN in your fics, art and what you consume, are you really doing that? Where are the protagonist WOMEN that are written or portrayed in a way that isn’t patriarchal?

Too much of a stretch?

Why bring in “the patriarchy” (or whatever other justification) instead of just saying you like the idea of two men getting it on, and that you project on at least one, if not both of them? And I know many women are honest about this, so this is obviously not aimed at them.

And I’m not writing this in a vacuum—there are endless posts about exactly this, and quite frankly:

It is actually patriarchal and misogynistic to deny women the right to just feel horny when they read about/look at two guys fucking. Without justifying it in any way, or making it about something that feels performative (“We like the m/m ship because we’re queer-positive feminists”. Please…). That, right there, is internalised misogyny:

Women don’t need to morally justify their horniness. They don’t need to justify whatever they’re into and turn it into a performative event. They’re just allowed to like it as is. The end.

Why not just like what we like while still critically engaging with the question whether some of what we read and create is potentially fetishising gay/queer men instead of calling it “feminist and queer-positive”?

Because let’s face it: Straight women who ship m/m don’t like gay men because they’re gay. They like them because they project a straight woman on a gay persona that has nothing to do with actually being gay (just like most lesbian porn never had anything to do with being created for lesbians, or f/f relationships in books written by men were always serving the male gaze, but it’s easier to holler about that, right?):

At least one of them is the guy you fancy (sometimes both of them are), and sometimes one of them is (at least partly) you. It has always worked like that and always will.

But back to the main topic of “smashing the patriarchy”: We are talking about fanfiction and fanart here. YOU create it. It’s not the adult entertainment industry making billions that throws it at you. You are the CREATORS and CONSUMERS. You get to CHOOSE. And yes, that choice can absolutely be a m/m ship if that’s what you want. Again, there’s no problem with that.

But if your main argument is that you want content without the stench of patriarchy, how about actually centering women in it, at least from time to time?

I don’t understand why anime men can be drawn looking handsome while also looking normal and wearing normal clothes, but sososo often, anime women are drawn looking like their tits are going to pop out of their bras and/or they wear provocative outfits.

Do men (or male artists anyway) not care if a woman is beautiful if she isn’t being revealing? Do her facial features, the way she carries herself, her hair, etc. not matter so long as she’s not trying to act like a seductress?

From my own experience with men I can only say one thing- they are liars. Or at least they like lying to themselves.

They will oftentimes say that they don't like women who reveal feminine features, but they do. Men like women and they like objectifying them. Bc if men are straight, logically, they're attracted to women. Bc woman's body is pretty and not just in a sexual sense. Sometimes it's just pretty for looking at; like art, nude modeling and act. Worshipped even. Woman's body is prettier than man's body in so many ways. But I think this beauty shouldn't be so heavily sexualized like it's often the case in the east. Japan has so much explicit content that they even have categorized shops at every corner, in public spaces. I don't know how Japanese women feel about this but statistics show that their birth rate is slowly declining. Besides poor economic situation, women don't feel respected or loved enough. And the feminism has risen in this part of the world as well.

Anyways, back to the point- I respect Gege for keeping his characters neat and the story heavily plot oriented without much fanservice (men are the fanservice lol). Gege also says that his parents are reading the manga so I suppose he doesn't rly want to feel like a disgrace lmao. I'm not sure if this was his marketing strategy to interest women into shōnen genre but it definitely worked, now jjk has become one of the most popular series of all time. And it's ok to have Mei Mei as one token representative of a "sexy woman" stereotype although I wouldn't rly call her sexy either. She's just a beautiful woman.

What definitely helps the whole situation is Gege's taste in fashion. No male mangaka that I know ever paid attention to this one very important factor. Fashion is a type of expression, and it can tell a lot about the character themselves without incorporating their personality in words. With that said, jjk women have so much personality to them, it's fascinating.

Mei Mei and Mai could be considered sexy, Utahime is a traditional authoritative beauty, Nobara is very stylish and confident, Maki is a strong tomboy girl, Miwa and Momo are girly and cute, Ozawa is a shy girl, Shoko is your typical CEO woman, Yuki is a biker girl. And some of them have short or tied up hair which is nice bc it can be just as feminine as long hair. He even introduced women's insecurities like Ozawa being overweight and that Yuuji didn't mind bc he found her writing and table manners pretty. Momo's outlook on woman's prejudice in jujutsu world is also something important to adress. Yuuta is shown kissing Rika bc what they're having is true love and true love doesn't know shallow boundaries. Gege understands woman's struggle.

In an interview, Gege revealed that he has similar mindset to Megumi and that he doesn't want to sexualize women as much. The way he treats woman body is purely artistic. At least watching these panels didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all.

Regarding Mei Mei's and Ui Ui's relationship, yea it's a taboo. But I think that author didn't want to promote incest, rather, he wanted to show that Mei Mei is a woman with flaws. And flaws are something that makes a person interesting, together with their virtues. She also likes money. To the point that Gojo made fun of her by flipping a coin to summon her bc apparently, Mei Mei lacks self-respect.

In contrast to her, Utahime respects herself too much. That's why she's often hysterical and Gojo tells her that hysterics won't win men (Gojo is a real mansplainer huh).

Gojo is rude and so is Sukuna. But Miwa and Yorozu don't even notice a man's flaw if they're interested in him (Gege knows a woman's mind too well, which is funny). That's why he's asking ladies to vote for Nanami instead of Gojo in popularity poll (women should set aside shallow interests and concentrate on person's kind soul).

Unlike them, Shoko is aloof and rational bc she's too aware of fleetingness of life, especially in her line of work as a doctor. Sure, she can be friendly and smile a lot, but she doesn't want to form any strong relationships with anyone. This is the only way she can keep her sanity in check. After all, jujutsu is just a marathon where the finish line is a pile of friends' corpses. Something the younger generations are a bit immature to understand.

Nobara is a very stubborn girl, she sometimes comes off as too bossy or rude (Yuuji calls her a bitch lol). But it turns out this was only her defense mechanism with people she's unfamiliar with bc she didn't want to be underestimated for being a country girl of limited thoughts and experience. Bc Nobara is indeed a great girl with many talents.

Maki is a strong, independent woman but this doesn't mean that she refuses help and support from people around her. She likes guys who are stronger than her (and Yuuta comes into picture, besides, he also suggested that he wants to crush Zenin clan together which explains her liking to him). Panda noticed that and wanted to play a wingman. Although his boobs question (Maki's insecurity) was a bit inappropriate (but it got the point across), Yuuta's answer was very polite which made him more likeable in her eyes.

Yuki and Todo are similar bc they're nosy, they enjoy exploring different people's interests and judge them whether they're considered "a person of culture" (which adds to the series' comedic aspect). I love Haibara's answer bc he says "I like women who eat a lot" bc he knows that women who eat are happy and that a hungry woman is an angry woman.

Gege understands women so much that fans are contemplating whether Gege is actually a woman himself or not. It's nice to have a mangaka who's this mindful.

anyway - more dabi thoughts :')

imagine the sheer amount of rage that overcomes dabi when you get catcalled in public. you were supposed to meet up at some place and he was waiting for you since he arrived a little early. he could already see you walk down the street when suddenly a stranger whistled after you and said smt that clearly made you feel uncomfortable.

good luck trying to keep your man under control bc he's about to go feral.

HEAR ME OUT— dabi would be so pisssed at witnessing someone catcalling you, basically treating you like an object or an animal.

you ain’t a dog, so why are these bastards whistling your way? ohh he’s so gonna burn them to fucking ashes, whom the fuck do they think are saying “let’s go have some fun” to? he will show them in person something fun.

while walking toward dabi, you see him raise from his spot on the bench he was sitting on and walk your way which makes you beam instantly, those three molluscs forgotten already as soon as you saw your pretty boy stomping heavily to you “hey baby! how–”, but then you noticed the grim expression on his face and when he reached you dabi walked past your silhouette, immediately you froze on place not understanding his behavior.

“i dare ya bastard to try whistle my girl’s way once more, i’ll burn those ugly lips of yours!”, at hearing his roar you gasp loudly before turning and rushing to him, arms closed around your boyfriend’s waist in a useless try to stop him, who had his hand lifted mid-air with blue flames bursting from it, reminding the dark haired young man that he’s a wanted villain.

those three leave right away after recognising dabi and while that was a good thing, it wasn’t a relief because now the citizens around you were going to call the cops (or even worse, the heroes) on you two, which is why quickly you grab his hand and drag him along in your impromptu escapade, rushing as fast as possible somewhere you two won’t be find by whoever was probably were on your tracks.

getting into an empty alley of a secondary road that would easily get you away from danger, once made other few shortcuts and checking that no one was on sight, you finally slowed down until you didn’t came to an halt. dabi in silence behind your bended figure, watching as you try to catch your breath.

“everyone ‘s gonna be on your back now, dumbass!”, you scolded punching him on his stomach, making the boy spurt air, before glaring at him menacingly. dabi was about to talk back at you, about how it’s crazy how you’re screaming at him, when you kept talking “if you’re gonna burn those trashbags, at least do it when no one is looking.”, and that was your actual point for screaming at him, which made the villain snort amused at you, an hand lifted so his wrist could hide the little smirk curling up his lips.

he then turned to you with a tender smile on his lips, a lifted eyebrow as his right hand went to rest on top of your head gently, cerulean eyes looking down at you in that soft way he reserved to you and no one else.

“sorry i made you worry baby, next time i’ll make sure to burn them in a way that won’t put me in danger.”, with an expression that’s a mix of worry and weak menace because you’re pouting so cutely, you nod firmly at his words. his face suddenly went serious, eyebrows knitted together and the corners of his mouth downwards “it’s just... it pissed me off so much how they were objectifying you, that i didn’t really think about where i was...”, he explained frustrated, hand going now to the back of his head, still boiling with rage at the thought of those three vermins.

you stared at him in awe for a long while before wrapping your arms around dabi’s chest and snuggling against, feeling reassured right away the moment his scent surrounded you “i love you so much, best boyfriend in the world!”, at your full of energy response, the arsonist simply melted while groaning in conflict before closing his arms around your shoulders, chin resting on top of your head as he stared forward with pursed lips and cheeks tinted of red.

“what am i gonna do with you?”, he blurted out exasperated, because damn... wasn’t he one lucky man to have an amazing girlfriend such as you.

“uhm?”, you hummed looking up at him confused after not hearing well what he just said, his voice was too low.

“nothing. shall we go now?”, with that dabi just held your hand and walked slightly ahead of you, trying extremely hard to hide his flushed cheeks but failing miserably as you got a small glimpse of them as soon as you had lifted your eyes on him, a small giggle leaving your mouth as you jumped at his side all happy and giddy.

you call him cute, then he calls you out on it horrified by you saying something like that about a villain, which you argue that it’s nonsense and while bickering lovingly with each others you two finally start up your date.

swarm: s1 ep 6 (spoilers!) review

+an analysis on dre’s relationships thus far

this episode has some of the most revealing content yet is also my least favorite episode, and i like most of them so far. we are given insight into dre’s family life, down to her full name and child relationship to marissa, and just how codependent she became toward marissa even after their parents had given dre up.

we also have a more nuanced take on patricia now that harris is out of the picture and is no long controlling the household and thus patricia’s perceptions of andrea, which is an amazing detail bc it allows patricia to say how she truly loved dre and wanted to help her, but a fear for marissa’s safety and disobeying harris kept her from nurturing dre the way she needed, “othering” her the way everyone except marissa did.

this also shows so strongly why ni’jah is viewed as a motherly figure. she’s everything that can be replaced in patricia, who was emotionally neglecting her through her complacency in harris’s subjugation of dre. patricia does not guide her emotionally or intellectually, so dre looks to a famous singer she idolized as a child for that very bond…which unlike her parents, can never actually leave her or isolate her, even if ni’jah also cannot respond.

it is “safer” for her to love someone who cannot say they don’t love you back, rather than attempting to facilitate that love and having it rejected. the only person dre has been able to facilitate this with is marissa who did often support her emotionally, so it is a physical drain to her the moment marissa wants to leave and be with khalid, both because she can’t handle dre’s codependency anymore and wants a life outside of her.

but dre is also so wrapped up in marissa, it is not until marissa dies that dre becomes incredibly hypersexual—likely trying to imitate marissa to model after her, not because she actually desires the guys she encounters. she is incredibly averse when men try to objectify her, and does not at all seem to care for their sexual validation outside of the “status” it temporarily gives her, feeling as empowered and in control as she thought marissa was.

despite the fact marissa succumbing to her depression reveals this could have been heavily exaggerated or not true to marissa as a person. marissa was incredibly in love with khalid to the point she felt she could not live without him, and really she herself is this “othered” depiction of mental illness she had been hiding for so long people saw in dre. people saw dre’s symptoms, said she was bad, and that’s what she “became.”

people saw them again, validated the belief that marissa was nothing like her, and so marissa heavily repressed her depression from everyone except dre—and marissa this empathizes with dre’s mental issues because she knows what it feels like. she tries to boosts dre’s confidence, because she knows what it was like to be at her lowest and doesn’t want dre falling to that.

no one would expect khalid’s cheating would be the breaking point—except dre, who couldn’t predict but had reason to think khalid was the direct cause, and not just a contributing factor, just like her need to care for dre, her parents stigma toward mental illness, etc,. in so many ways, marissa was trapped into the high expectations people held her to—so she breaks when she realizes doing all of it was really worth nothing—because khalid did not truly love her. he was likely the only person who was not putting her into this “perfect” box like everyone else, so when she no longer has him, she feels as if the world has given up on her entirely.

dre does not at all comprehend the fact that marissa was very different from who she periceved her as. she is doing whatever she thinks her “cool girl” archetype of marissa would do, trying to capture the feeling of confidence marissa evoked—which dre can only do when copying marissa’s behaviors or supporting ni’jah, as this is dre at her most outspoken. this often falls short, because she can never be marissa, who conditioned herself to behave in such a way that it became natural without feeling awkward.

and back to the biting at the party…i immediately saw the lighting for ni’jah and that was the moment i felt she was being used as a mainly motherly figure, and it was true. dre so deeply craves any sort of maternal intimacy patricia clearly never gave her, so she doesn’t know how to express that appropriately. she has given up on patricia or any sort of older woman in her life being able to nurture her properly, so she forced ni’jah into that role. and when marissa passes, she is of the belief no one can replace her, and therefore refuses to form any meaningful connections to women who are trying to form a space of security for her.

however—i feel the detective portion is way too long, and as a result the episode relies way too heavily on social media as compared to how initially the show would do it to only where needed. it was better when social media was used only as an agent for dre’s killings + showing how the loss of marissa has gotten so hard on her, she behaves as if marissa is still alive and lets it run her entire life.

too much is heard about the detective’s life, and i feel it could’ve been better to introduce her to the plot briefly, reduce those “aha” clips to local news articles, and do a sort of pulp fiction thing where she appears slowly (like the antagonists) but her role becomes more frequent.

but i so appreciate that they have a black woman in the criminal justice system who can easier empathize with the intersection between mental illness + dre never feeling like the “normal” black girl in an affluent community people thought marissa was, which highlights all the more why dre’s entire personality after marissa’s death is molded after her so incredibly quick, and in little increments throughout the season even when she’s playing more of a “damsel in distress” to get others to believe through her fashion choices.

however i think the portion with patricia’s interview is vital to giving more info on dre, as is the girl dre stabbed when they were kids. in general we are introduced to new characters way too quickly, whereas it fell seamlessly into place in previous episodes. but the underlying concept is very well done and the strongest parts of the episode are patricia’s interview.

man, husbands of river song is going to pull a double by giving me a character-farewell that I... actually like. for a character that I've criticized pretty heavily. twice in a row, who'da thought, but yeah this episode, like hell bent, is messy, but it's mostly enjoyable messy rather than nonsense messy, youknow?

anyway, brace yourselves... I'm about to give a m*ffat episode... a good rating

OBJECTIFICATION: because this is a river song episode, it does unfortunately fuck up on this point again, because if there's one constant for river song episodes it's that she's Sexy in a dom mummy kind of way, but it's Empowering because she's the one who casually dismisses and objectifies men, she ooowns her sexuality, which just so happens to be the kind of woman that m*ffat thinks is hot

it's actually not so bad once you get past the first bit of it. once the doctor and river song are in the tardis things get a lot better and then stay relatively even for the rest of the episode. and then the ending is. actually quite moving

PLOT-POINT: this could go both higher and lower. lower, because I think if there's one thing that bothered me throughout river's whole narrative it was the way she clearly never had a positive view of her relationship with the doctor, always defining herself as someone who couldn't help but love someone who was so far above her, so brilliant, so amazing, so extraordinary, that nobody could hope to be on their level -- not to mention all the stuff (which isn't in this episode thank goodness) about how once the doctor sees you age, it's over

and now we've reached the end of the story, this core of river, the whole... thing of having been groomed from birth to revolve entirely around the doctor, to never feel worthy, to think the doctor is just plain "too good" for her, is confirmed for good to be simply the way this story is, without further analysis or deconstruction

that being said, this episode gives us more crumbs than any before. the doctor is incredibly kind towards river, in a way I don't think eleven ever really was outside of a small handful of moments, and it's confirmed that they've been avoiding the singing towers and that if it were up to the doctor they'd never go there, but then the universe decides on it, so the doctor pulls out all the stops (in a doctor-like way, not in a "godlike unknowable being" type way) to make it a good last time for them. so in that sense, this episode manages to be all about river in a way I don't think any previous ones have been

for once it's the doctor revolving around her, not the other way around. this also further by showing little tidbits into river's life outside of the doctor, and the doctor being confused (and jealous, sure, but... ehhh lower-and-higher rating, it's complicated, it's kind of het but also kind of not) about her sheer amount of other spouses that she never mentions. so the doctor is crashing into her adventure basically, not the other way around. if this had been the template for river song episodes, i might have liked them better. the closes we get to something like this is back in s5 with flesh and stone/time of angels, but after the beginning it very much became about the doctor and not about river. this story is firmly river, the entire way through. all it took was for it to be her very last flipping episode

COMPLEXITY: I'll call this one doctor who complex. it's silly, it has various locations, kinda takes you for a spin, but it's quite simple and doesn't try anything clever where it's not needed. this episode is a romp, and it remains a romp right until the end, where it's a sweet story about a long long goodbye

CHARACTERS/LORE/PLOT: river song has gone to the library to die. i don't think this technically means she could never come back, because m*ffat utterly fucked the whole "we meet backwards" lore. they definitely just meet out of order, not in strict reverse linear order

but. but. I get that this is the big goodbye, you'd want it to remain that way. also it introduces nardole who is with us throughout s10

I don't... love nardole. i think he was good comic relief for this episode, now that I'm watching s10 I think he's too comic to be able to carry the dramatic scenes, but yeah. he's fine here

COMPANIONS MATTER: it's fuckn river song's episode, we're just gatecrashing it! this will be the second time (after the girl who waited) that this point gets a rating like this, and while there have been a few scattered episodes with 7/8 ratings, it on average sits firmly at a 5 or below so just... bask in it for a second after five seasons of companions being sidelined the majority of the time

“GODLIKE” DOCTOR: the doctor is doing some smart things here and there, but again, it's firmly river's episode and that's really really ever-more striking the more I think about it. so much of this era of doctor who consists either of The Doctor Is Always The Centre Of The Universe Narrative type episodes or the doctor enters someone else's story and then takes over

it's so very refreshing for the doctor to let river do her thing, it's what we've been told is so great about her as a person, but I think far more seldomly seen

PREVIOUS DOCTOR WHO: there's a lot of river-and-doctor history which, because river only really occurred multiple times in eleven's arc, means we don't actually go back very far. it is one of those things that weakens river's character, and yes yes I know in audio books she meets previous doctors (further weakening the whole "meeting in reverse linear" idea), but in the show she never does, making it odd that she'd be prepared to meet any of the other faces

I think river could have been so much stronger as a character if she'd not been presented as The character. the one who knows the doctor best, who is the best, who was created For the doctor, etcetc. broken record I know. but it's little things like this that hammer it home

and ofc we already have this character, it's the master, and gomez!master provides a far more compelling "version" of what they were trying to do with river being a mysterious femme fatale. there were just things that could have been done differently to ground her more, and that feels very obvious when trying to do callbacks here and you're like... your callbacks happened two-three seasons ago

actually noticed just now that the master and river never met, which also, the other thing being that river is very disconnected from the rest of doctor who mythos. sure she's mentioned to know various aliens and she's there in the pandorica episode, but her main stories aren't ever putting her in a wider context of the story. if river song episodes were totally excised, then apart from the odd mention of the doctor having ostensibly been "married" she may as well not exist

“SEXINESS”: there is some stuff. Idk whether this belongs in objectification as well or not, but m*ffat gets some last digs in with his favourite historical women he loves to objectify, because the doctor married Elizabeth 1st, Cleopatra, and Marilyn Monroe -- these were all eleven-doctor episodes, so more of a uuuurgh in hindsight about some of the ways this was written, because flipping 12yr old looking eleven was too much to resist for these women.

I lie, because actually Elizabeth married ten (in day of the doctor, so eleven era), but it was an egregious mischaracterisation of ten as well. and ofc. the fuckn jokes about all of that. finally, Elizabeth the first, whom I have no flipping opinion about usually, because who tf cares about the royal family (well, apart from the Shakespeare play versions of them + Lion in the Winter), is free from this hopefully

there's a bit of "sexy voice" going on at times, but that's just par for the course with river song episodes, and again, it's not too egregious in comparison to usually

INTERNAL WORLD: yeah, fun, silly, simple stuff, good times good times. nothing massive and complicated, but then steven not everything needs to be so damned massive and complicated all the time, does it????

POLITICS: still question the politics of river and guns. will do so forever. look, i know the doctor isn't so pacifist as all that, but there was a lot of gun-related arcs in nu!who era that was often quite complicated (for example eleven in town called mercy or twelve in hell bent) and it never seemed to apply to river

it's actually another way she sometimes felt disconnected from everything else. there's doctor who with its themes, and then there's the doctor and river adventures, and they never quite meet up

there's also ofc the ongoing silliness of "marriage as concept" and unexamined amatonormative + heteronormative ideas, but like. do I expect them to know what that means, never mind how to do an interesting exploration of relationship dynamics unless it's by accident? so I take what I want from it on that front

FULL RATING: 67/100 (if I can count….)

on the whole a fun episode and I was very prepared to not enjoy it, because I haven't been the biggest enjoyer of river song as character in the past + I obviously am not a fan of attempting to make the doctor alloromantic, which arguably... they also didn't manage to do

and if that felt strong with eleven, oh boy does it go through the roof with twelve! now I've had "aplatonic doctor" as concept put into my brain, it applies so strongly to twelve (as well as eleven) and I can absolutely read this episode through that lens and come out with a great deal of enjoyment for it

on the whole, this is a story about the doctor doing things for river, which is a rarity. it's a fun adventure between the two of them, which is also rare. and it's a neat little exploration on the themes of ending and putting off that ending (which also exists in clara's story), and how endings may be sad, but there's all the bits that come before that and that's important. and also ofc it's slowly gearing up to saying goodbye to this era's doctor -- the ponds have left, clara has gone, and now river...

I think part of the reason Morpheus is often headcanoned as asexual in this fandom is a combination of people projecting (which is totally valid) and that there's a significant portion of the fandom who hasn't read the comics and only has the show to go off of. In my opinion, in the show he does have strong ace vibes. Much less so in the comics, but it's a lot easier to headcanon a character as ace when your first introduction to them gives you strong ace vibes. So there's probably a good number of people who still headcanon him ace even after reading the comics.

Personally, I just headcanon him as queer. My reason being that if you have a being that is basically the subconsious of all humanity averaged together, the odds of that person being straight is probably low.

As for there being discourse on his sexuality in the fandom: if there is discourse, I've missed it. Though there very well could be discourse on a side of the fandom I'm not in.

This is an interesting viewpoint bearing in mind I have been discussing the exact opposite opinion in a separate post in which we theorised that the show has played up Morpheus' sexual allure...

Without wanting to overspeak here, as someone who is not asexual and therefore cannot speak for that community, I think it is part of a wider cultural thing within fandom that people who are queer and in particular asexual and/or aromantic, tend to relate and imprint rather heavily on characters who tend to be non-human. I think there is probably an interesting psychoanalytical reason for this but its probably a bit too deep of a topic for me to tackle on a Sunday evening.

Dream is just the latest in a whole batch of non-human characters that often get depicted as asexual in their fandoms. I'm thinking characters like Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens, Castiel from Supernatural, The Doctor from Doctor Who, Spock from Star Trek, to name a few.

I can therefore understand why fandom may view Dream this way, even though canonically it isn't technically the case. I don't think there is any harm in it persay, though I think fandoms need to be careful about constantly headcanoning non human characters as ace because what does that say about real asexual humans? Asexuality is a human characteristic at the end of the day, and I wonder if this is just the latest in the trend of queer people in general being made inhuman and "monstrous" which goes all the way back to old hollywood monster movies.

I personally don't pick up any ace vibes from Morpheus in the show. I'm not really sure what I would be looking for regarding "ace vibes" anyway because its just simply a lack of sexual attraction, and I think both episode 6 and episode 11 make it quite clear he experiences sexual attraction, at least in my opinion and interpretation. If its his inhuman element that makes him appear asexual I'll be honest I find that a bit problematic, and I would ask asexual fans to also look internally as to the reasons why they associate inhuman qualities as asexual qualities. Of course if there are qualities he is presenting that can be compared to a lived asexual experience which don't relate to his inhuman nature at all then that is different, and I would like to know more about that since it is an interpretation I do not see and would like to read about.

My viewpoint is that he is quite a sexual character even in the show, and I thought this before I threw myself into the comics and audiobook. Other than episode 1, in which the show does a wonderful job of not sexualising or objectifying him outside of maybe Alex's gay awakening, even though he is completely naked throughout, once he has his clothes back on the show leans into the sexual chemistry he has with every single cast member to the point that its basically an in-fandom joke that Dream is a bit of a slut (affectionate).

Even in the cast interviews, this "Dream is a slut" viewpoint was already known about and acknowledged (thank you Kirby and Mason) so its not exactly a secret that the show is playing up the sexual elements even if currently they remain in subtext. Personally I doubt they will remain in subtext for very long and I think future episodes will quite likely lean into Dream's sexual allure and bring it more into the forefront. I am very curious about how they will adapt Tales in the Sand for instance, which is the only time in the comics that Dream has sex within the panels rather than "off the page" and since that version of Dream won't be portrayed by Tom Sturridge, I do wonder if maybe the show will decide to give us more Dream sex scenes - there is certainly an opportunity to bring Calliopes praises to life in the "show don't tell" manner, and we have yet to discover what they are gonna do with the Thessaly situation, or whether the intense sexual chemistry he had with Johanna Constantine will come to fruition.

I also can't not bring up Dreamling fandom here, because if my experience in Dreamling fandom has taught me anything about the general fandom opinion of Dream, its that the show has clearly encouraged an interpretation of Dream where he wants to climb Hob Gadling like a tree. Fandom hasn't giffed that particular smoldering heated gaze from 1789 20million times for no reason. They giffed it 20million times because it is fucking HOT and sexual and arousing and is the first indication we have in the entire show that Dream himself experiences sexual arousal - because he sure as hell looks aroused in that scene.

As always YMMV and everyone is gonna have different opinions and interpretations and they are all valid in their own ways. I dunno if there is actual discourse I just saw a few comments and wondered if there was. If it helps I also headcanon him as queer, because I think heterosexual is a much smaller limited box to try to shove such a grand and unknowable concept into. I doubt a creature such as Dream would ever limit himself to only one specific type of being, even if that is all the comics were willing to show us of his sexual and romantic history.

are those people unaware that cheerleaders can be at sports other than football. our hs had cheerleaders for basketball who cheered for (you guessed it) girls and boys teams. marching band usually only perform at football games (aside from competitions) but people aren't making the same critique about those. (we had pep band at basketball games too but that is obvi not marching band as they didn't march. and pep band was at girls and boys games) cheerleading isn't all that different from a combo of dance & gymnastics and yet some wack jobs want to act like they're functionally equivalent to an audience shouting chants. weirdos. all of this to say you are correct and you should say it

i think there's just a lot of overlooking of the sport in general by most people, but i think people get too caught up in cheerleading itself rather than the culture of pep rallies and "cheer" leading, at least in an american culture. the idea of having people cheer on your team is nothing new and was apparently established by men in relation to more formal team settings. the nature of this "debate" is a bit finicky since cheerleading didn't use to be female dominated, but when it gained traction amongst women we saw more formal gender roles strike down the idea that it was ever something for men and it was a women's activity and sport, at least from what i gathered the gist of it to be. the professionalization of it is what seemed to spark the overt sexualization and objectification of cheerleaders across american culture as these super sexualized portrayals were then broadcasted to everyone in roughly the 1950s and beyond. this obviously had a lot of influence on cheerleading attire for non-professional cheerleaders and what cheerleading was apparently about now in the american mass imagination: pretty women waving pom-poms on the side of the football field.

i won't like lie and say that that isn't a huge problem and that i love seeing cheerleaders objectified while doing pep activities bc i don't, but i think the history of the sport and activity is quite important. a lot of similar sports such as acrobatics, gymnastics, and figure skating have also had this same typing of being female sports and demeaned as such. but i think the fact cheerleading can involve both sport and entertainment is important to acknowledge as well, like you said cheerleaders are there to "cheer" and contribute to the mood of a pep rally or game, men's or women's teams. they do not and should not have to objectify themselves to do this and i think, same as other female sports, cheerleaders should be able to wear less sexualized clothing while preforming and competing.

idk i think the obvious thing to discuss is "pep rally" cultures have been heavily typed female and are often thought of as female spaces and sports, when really they should be way more equal in representation. but since most pep rally activities involve things like dance and gymnastics, sports typed female and often female dominated as far as im aware, which mean women get the full brunt of supplying this pep rally culture and in the modern age objectified as they do it. i think the debate should focus on this culture and idk figuring out ways to fix it? instead of complaining about cheerleading as a sport itself which gets you nowhere in the conversation in my opinion

I feel as if Odette doesn’t really like dresses, she only wears the, for very very special occasions. Every other fancy or special occasion, you’ll catch her in a stylish suit or a turtle neck with a blazer and some dress pants. Verosika loves it when Odette where’s a suit with an actual dress shirt because she can leave lipstick print on Odette’s neck and it’ll smudge off onto Odette’s dress shirt.

The last time Odette had worn a dress, a lacy little black thing with an open back that stopped about knee level, it had been for one of Verosika's award shows. She'd gone as the pop star's plus-one -- not officially, because they still weren't public. But Verosika could always choose at least one person to share her table, and Odette was usually it.

These events were usually quite posh and extravagant, where everyone fought to show off as much skin as possible, and Odette had felt extremely uncomfortable. Verosika kept telling her the entire night how gorgeous she was -- it hadn't helped. She kept pulling her dress down as it rose up every time she sat, and she'd felt eyes objectifying her throughout the entire ordeal. She didn't know how Verosika dealt with this day in and day out.

This time, Odette had agreed to come along again, on the condition that she be allowed to wear an unassuming pantsuit. A simple set with black slacks, a white button-up dress shirt with a collar underneath, and a light gray jacket. Verosika, as usual, would be decked out to the nines in a voluptuous purple dress that stopped mid-thigh. At least Odette wouldn't have to worry about her own appearance this time -- she'd be too busy looking at Verosika the entire night, she thought to herself, blushing.

But now that she's seen her girlfriend, maybe the outfit she'd chosen is too simple.

"Nonsense," Verosika says, when Odette voices this concern. "Whatever makes you comfortable, babydoll, is fine with me." Then, grinning, she undoes the top button of Odette's dress shirt, until just the top of her cleavage is showing. Smiling warmly into Odette's skin, Verosika kisses Odette's collarbone, and then her neck, leaving two incredibly obvious black lipstick prints where anyone can see.

Verosika does the top button back up, but the lipstick on Odette's neck is still showing. Odette gasps, making a move to wipe it away, until Verosika grabs her hand, and pulls it back down.

"You have to wear this for me, though," Verosika coos, schemingly. "All night." Then, booping her nose, Verosika confirms, " 'Kay?"

Blushing ten shades redder than before, Odette has to fight herself not to put her hand back up to her neck. She swallows heavily, and squeaks out, " 'Kay."

1. You are not fucking anything up luv, it's not coming of fetishy or objectifingly. Ur doing allright

2. When it comes to portraying falling for someone, there is no inherent difference between falling in it as a men or a woman. But I am just a guy and never been a woman so idk. Everyone is diffrent too, and I think you write them all very emotionally charged. Full of nuance and depth qnd all those feelings that just might burst.

(I might be a few chapters behind but I really like the emotionally repressed and self destructive Remus as in it makes sense. It makes a lot of sense for a guy I think. Irl he would most probably be the typa fella that starts going to the gym or gets into 1200cc piss missile motorcycles. Maybe even drink a bit too much, but "strong" enough to get over himself and use that toxic masculinity to go back to "normal")

However, after thinking about it and like whilst keeping in mind what I said earlier - I do have a gf. Looking at me and my Sunshine, whilst strongly generalizing - I think it took me longer to fall for her. Like acually fall for her, not just like her and think she is one of the most beautiful woman on earth. But now as a guy, idk I just think about her a lot, I'm more on the logical side then her. Also way more reserved idk uhh I have some sa experience so it might be just me but after chatting a bit with some people yeah guys usually more reserved waiting for the sign or something. Idk it's ig hard to describe normality bcs it's just normal to me lol

3. When it comes to specific scenes uhhh pooki what can I tell you xD they have great chemistry, with Rem hoping back and fourth. It makes sense that a lot of them are sexually charged since they cannot connect romantically (at least as far as I've read). If you have more specific ones that would be easier to say xD

Thank god I'm not coming off as objectifying, I swear I was terrified, I feel like there is a very thin line, especially for BL and I wanted to portray it right and do it justice, especially since I know a lot of fanfiction can be complicated, and I have read plenty of people (specifically queer men) complaining about the way their relationships are typecasted and portrayed in said media.

I definitely focus heavily on their feelings, but that's kind of the reason I decided to write GC in the first place, I wanted to explore the complications of a throuple hehe.

It makes so much sense that guys would be more reserved I think, but I think especially in queer situations, both for men and women would be, since you might not be sure if the other person is actually queer too, idk if that makes sense?

Regarding specific scenes, I remember I was super nervous when I wrote the library scene with Sirius and Remus in Chapter 26, since it was Sirius' first time to feel something for Rem, and panic over it, I was so scared it wasn't doing it right. And also in chapter 31, when Sirius sees Minho and Tom kiss and has another gay panic revelation moment. I mean, I'm not sure when I figured I was pansexual but I think if I had seen two girls kiss in a closet and I didn't know about it, it would have definitely done something to me if that makes sense.

pretty much just echoing what other anons are saying about the absolute lack of nuance that armys have fostered where anyone who has a negative opinion about anything the members do is just an uncultured hater who wants the entire wrath of stan twitter to fall on x member.

while i do think black armies are absolutely correct about the virtue signaling and pearl clutching that white armies tend to do when it comes to sexual references in hip hop/rap outside of bts and agree that it is largely based in racist stereotypes. i think the “bora glasses” are causing them to miss the point of a lot of the uproar. its not about lyrics being sexual bc this (for the most part) did not happen with latto’s verse. in addition, a lot of them hate to admit they find this language attractive bc its the kind of stuff we have been socialized to expect from men since we are little girls. i am latina and grew up around reggaeton (heavily influenced by rap and hip hop) where a min. 80% of the music is extremely degrading and objectifying of women. even as a queer adult woman in her late 20s while i acknowledge this issue with the genre (and have heard much more explicit things) a lot of that music is extremely nostalgic to me. so i understand the cognitive dissonance but i cannot accept that from men i expect better from (not JH obviously lol).

and yes, i do think this is a bad look for JK even if he didn’t sing or write that part bc either he’s aware of the meaning and has no problem with it or is that oblivious to not even know what someone is saying on his own damn song. the fact that an alternate version even exists with this collab tells me that the check cleared before someone in a board room went “actually maybe not”.

despite my deep respect for BTS throughout the years, at the end of the day I will always acknowledge that they are men. they are not some sexless unicorns raised in a place with no misogyny or gender roles, they are men and like most other men they engage in behavior that often betrays the respect of most women whether consciously or subconsciously. we simply may not see it bc they are celebrities with pretty curated online personalities. now, that doesn’t mean i think they’re secretly chauvinistic pigs but despite my respect for them i always keep a degree of distance bc they *could* be.

i will add that the “bora glasses” are a hell of a drug. the double standards when it comes to the members vs other celebrities is insane (and i dont even like most celebrities lol). i know not a single one of these armies would think twice about talking shit about a song like this if it were from anyone else and that’s what really disappoints me about what our spaces have turned into.

I agree that the "bora glasses" are a real thing. It seems to me that even "normal" Armys are complaining a bit about the song, however, which is good. But I don't know that the solo version exists simply because Hybe foresaw the original would upset people. They likely wanted to recreate with 3D what they did for Seven - two versions counting as one, or at least another version to boost streams apart from the instrumental. Since it didn't make sense to have a clean and explicit versions again, and because maybe they knew some fans hadn't liked Latto's verses or Seven being a feature, they used the same strategy they applied to TXT's Back For More recently, and recorded a solo version.

I also agree that BTS are men, so, like all men, they're probably a lot more insensitive and ignorant to sexism than we imagine, and say or do a lot of things that would disappoint us (though I don't believe they're secretly chauvinistic pigs at all).

I want to ask for advice from other radfems

how do I connect with other women? like not any age group specifically

I am 18, russian, not lesbian or bi but I have separatist views and hope to become a good ally to LB women; I’m gnc (clothes and no make-up, but not really short hair, I’ve wanted to shave it so it’d be rly short but mom doesn’t allow it). views: radfem (this summer break I will finally read academic literature), interests: I’m a former weeb, play genshin, like maths/physics (unfortunately not too smart for some stuff but I hope I’ll get there). personality: I’m not that insufferable but I suppose I’m neurodivirgent (haven’t been diagnosed but I have been ‘weird’, as my mom says. almost sure I’ve at least got adhd (not in the social contagion way))

I’m graduating soon (last exam in a week) and then I’m going to a university which specializes in STEM, and I’m a bit unsure what awaits me there. In russia stem is really heavily dominated by men, and women are still despised too. also for 4 years I’ve been studying in the school associated with this uni and there are not many girls there especially gnc girls are very rare (and idk some might be even gendies), unfortunately. When we visited the uni mom saw some girls with no make-up and short haircuts and normal clothing and this gives me hope but the uni is huge and idk if I’ll get to learn alongside young women like them. doesn’t help that for the last couple years I haven’t been able to converse properly with other girls (I thought I did!! but I’ve experienced some betrayal and I have trust issues now, within the circle of my peers in this school ofc, not every other woman) and have been stuck “friends” with boys (pls I know I know don’t say anything abt this) who I’ve been able to tolerate most of the time (although yeah the boys are... something). I’ve experienced some bullying in this school so I’ve been afraid of stating my outright opinions (yeah I’m ashamed of my cowardice but I didn’t want to make matters worse). the only other radfem I’ve got in contact with is one of my classmates (whose views I doubt because she’s been wearing objectifying clothes a lot. like yeah condemning boys is all good but it doesn’t put a lot of weight in your words if what you do is only that). so yeah, a lot of problems here

so, any ideas what I could do?

as a woman I have often felt objectified or sexualized by male singers and directors etc so I am always grateful that with your music there never are contents that make me or , from what I've heard, any of your female identifying fans feel that way, is that also something that u consciously decide to do or is it just subconsciously part of your work bc that's how you operate in life in general? - omg I’d loooove to hear Louis answering this question cuz I’ve been wondering the same like is it a conscious decision and did he even think about about it that way…if we fantasise what do you this his answer would be? Like from your observations/feelings

mmh interesting question, I think it depends on how aware he is of how typical and diffuse is the classic man-singing-about-girl trope is, like on one hand he must be right? bc in the early years of 1d and sometimes even later they sort of made that stereotypical music (even if not as heavily charged simply bc it had to be minor approved lol) and I'm sure the songwriters they worked with often suggested some similar stuff (as well as pop music songwriters he has worked with later on)

but on the other hand he is still a guy and that flavor of misogyny is often missed by them or at least not with the same degree of severity that we experience it at, and if you're not aware of something then the reason why you're not doing it is probably not a deliberate avoidance yk?

BUT also he's always knee deep in fandom discussions and lurking around so I would think this is a discussion he's probably realistically already read about?

so overall idk, I think most probably he'd say a mix of both subconscious and not? like maybe he started doing it subconsciously bc that's just how he operates but then noticed its effect on fans and started to deliberately avoid these contents too? (or maybe he'd just shrug it off as mostly accidental lol I really am not sure about how he would answer or even if he'd answer honestly tbh )

Summary #3

In “Foreword” Erik Spiekermann discusses the initial signing of the First Things First manifesto and his excitement to do so, stating that the original signatories were pretty much all his heroes. He goes on to talk about the paragraph he added about his misgivings, asking many questions surrounding commercialism and sales. He asks the reader what is wrong to design, and details different ways bad design can affect us. In relation to the he tells a story regarding sixteen people who died I na fire due to badly designed and placed signage, he finishes off his article talking about the power that graphic designers hold and states that the rules need to be rewritten. And finally leaves us with the advice that charity starts at home, it’s not all about how we treat the commercial world but those who share it clients, employees, peers and suppliers and most importantly how we treat our process.

In Bermans manifesto and 3 step pledge he invites us to imagine what would be possible if designers did not participate in the export of over consumption. What the world would be like if designers pandered not to beauty and money but to something deeper than aesthetic appeal. Bermans first step, be true to your profession (e.g ethical conduct and commitment. Bermans second step, be true to yourself, let your morals and beliefs guide you, it’s okay to say no to a job you may deem unethical but your union doesn’t. And finally the third, “I will spend at least 10% of my professional time helping repair the world.” If we can all spend at least 4 out of our 40 hour work week to help make the world a better place, we will inevitably end up with a more sustainable, more caring civilization.

In design to re-nourish the main topic of discussion is sustainability and systems thinking. Designers must consider all parts of a system in order to understand how everything/everyone around us is effected by our work. Designers must grasp a better notion of the impact of their work, both socially and biologically, therefore learning to understand biological systems they effect (biomimicry) once designers fully understand the amount of our design impact only then can the world start to heal.

In dieter Rams 10 principles for good design, he asks the reader the age old question being, what is good design? Rams believes design should be both pretty and effective and states that both are important in making good design. Although all design should be predominantly functional, looks are equally important in order to sell product. Rams tells his reader that good design is as little design as possible, meaning that we need to focus on essential features so as not to overcrowd and undervalue the product itself.

Objectified outlines our complex relationship with heavily manufactured objects and therefore the people who manufacture them. In the film we speak with many informants of different professions including designers, critics, journalists and museum curators regarding their thoughts and process when it comes to sustainability. The overall message from the majority of interviewees was that design shouldn’t be complex or permanent. We design beautiful labels that just end up in landfills and even before that don’t fully do their job. Design should be effective, minimal and environmentally friendly, and it’s the job of the designer to create a better future for those within the industry and those outside of it.
