Batty covers up his pain with jokes in hope it will derail the conversation oway from unwanted territory. For the most part the fairies and forest critters wave it off to him just being odd. But you know better. The doctors might not have gotten a chance to experiment on you but that doesn't deter your experience from what you saw while there. It was only by a stroke of luck that you escaped, Batty doesn't like thinking about the other possible outcome, keeps him up at night. This also doesn't go unnoticed by Crysta who also can see through Batty's facade.
Through trial and error you and Crysta manage to break through some of Batty's walls, helping him with his trauma, though some wounds are yet to be mended or are better left untouched, too damaged to be truly healed.
You both share your fair share of problems, Batty with his permanently changed anatomy, and you with your lost parents. He doesn't say it outright but he hears you sometimes, at night, crying, when you think no one else does. As much as he wants to comfort you he knows that you need your space. He's made himself clear to you that you can come to him if you're feeling down, that even though he acts like he has a few screws loose he's always gonna be there for you, all you need to do is ask. That's why he leaves you alone, because he knows that sometimes it's better to process your pain alone.
Being the byproduct of multiple acts against nature, Batty has been left with some unfortunate side effects. Some are more easy to ignore than others like his chapped lips, while the antenna in his head proves itself again and again to be his worst hurdal yet. Especially when he “switches to a channel” that he'd rather not remember, but you've learned a way to combat this. Batty responds to soft touches, a soothing hushed voice that beckons him back to reality, promising that danger is far in the distance. This also is probably why your opinion of Zak worsened when he messed with Batty's antenna the first time tbh.
Being close with Batty is gonna result in you getting close with Crysta, she's a caring girl with a sense for adventure, she sympathises with your situation and helps you get acquainted with the forest. If Batty, for whatever reason, temporarily leaves he will leave you in the care of Crysta and her father. Don't get him wrong, he does trust the other fairies but he trusts Crysta the most to look after someone so dear to him.
Although Batty has already established Ferngully as a paradise he's not unaware that danger still lurks, though some of it is chipped oway due to being friends with Crysta. Batty might not have grown up in the forest but he's well aware that animals gotta eat. Though fruit bats only have a handful of predators that doesn't deter him from acting out on his paranoia. He knows what an empty stomach does to you, and he couldn't imagine what would happen if one of them set their eyes on you.
Okay, I'm gonna go ahead and say this is NOT my website, but these are super cute. I mainly want to point attention to the mental health section of it both being funny and aesthically pleasing to look at:
Not only does it have a mental health section with these pins, but there's also a pride section, some being bold while others are subtle in style:
Not into color? There's two 80's sections, one full of color to represent disco and the other to achieve the Memphis 80's vibe:
I'm not getting paid for this, at all, I find this website, Betsy Dare, adorable. It's a small business made for accessories likes bags, earrings, and there are some appearal! Not much, however, as it is an accessory shop.
Also, for the ones who love Halloween? They still have Halloween stuff up.
I don't personally know the owner, but my mom knows them and bought their stuff. Quality is good, size is also good and very accommodating, and overall just amazing! I recommend giving it a good look through, as it has a good catalog to loom through!
one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
My work boots are the most expensive shoes I’ve ever owned.
Also the most comfortable. I chose them after trying on several different brands and comparing lifespan vs usage vs comfort - I needed them for a physically demanding job, not the weekend hiking trails. I could have easily chosen cheaper boots that would have lasted long enough to be worth their low price, but I know the Sam Vimes Boot Theory and knew weaker, less comfortable boots would make my life harder in the long run.
So when the outside edge of the heel started wearing down after three years of heavy use I went to the shop I got them from and said “hey this is a common problem for me with how I walk but now it’s affecting my ankles and knees and I don’t wanna have to buy a new pair, is there a way to fix this?”
The salesman at this very fancy upscale boot store said “oh yeah, there’s a shoe repair place that can give you some heel guards - it’ll keep the rubber from wearing out.”
So at 8am this morning right after my 9hr shift ends I went to the shoe repair shop and it is the most hole-in-the-wall, is-this-a-real-business-or-a-mafia-front, am-I-gonna-get-shot tiny cinder block cube I’ve ever seen in my life. I grew up plenty poor and love me a good hole-in-the-wall business, but going from upscale store to this cash-only repair shop gave me whiplash. Wasn’t expecting this when a guy who wears three piece suits to sell boots said it’s the best place to go.
The skinny kid behind the counter looks somehow 16 and 25 at the same time, but when I tell him this place was recommended he smiles and says to hand over my boots. I hand him the vaguely warm foot-smelling boots, and stand in my socks in the 3’ square entryway surrounded by every color leather polish you could buy and watch as he turns my boots around in his hands, sizes up a crescent moon bits of plastic, and unceremoniously hammers tiny nails through them before handing them back.
The heels are perfectly level again. I can walk without almost rolling my ankles. They don’t clack loudly on the pavement or feel different. This is gonna fix my knee pain. It cost $10.
This kid had every tool he needed within arms reach, worked fast and smoothly, I was in and out the door in less than 8 minutes, and it only cost $10.
I didn’t think anything could cost only $10 anymore. I’m so used to hyperinflation prices I was spiritually thrown back to the 1400’s visiting the cobbler in town square. This kid might have been that cobbler and just decided to never die.
I’m still reeling from the whiplash, and gobsmacked at the price, and thrilled I didn’t have to go buy new, worse work boots (cuz I don’t have that kind of money for a second pair, I’m expecting these ones to last a decade) and it feels like I just experienced one of the rare little chunks of magic that floats around our world.
hey. don’t cry. crush four cloves of garlic into a pot with a dollop of olive oil and stir until golden then add one can of crushed tomatoes a bit of balsamic vinegar half a tablespoon of brown sugar and stir for a few minutes adding a handful of fresh spinach until wilted and mix in half a cup of grated parmesan cheese and pasta of your choice ok?
nightwing being hurt in the field, and over comms he can’t get out what was wrong, nearly in shock, and jason puts on his best batman™️ voice and says “robin, report.”
and it snaps dick out of it enough to say concussion, possible broken ribs, and a gash in his side.
no one talks about it, and then a year later, damian does the same thing to tim
