If you're not reading Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall, you should be. I'm a 100 pages in and in absolute splits. Top-tier British queer comedy. 💀💀
(I'm also convinced the character the protag is trying to hook up with is autistic as hell.)
“No. God no. My mother’s French.”
“Ah. Lucien, then.” He said it perfectly, too, with the half-swallowed softness of the final syllable, smiling at me—the first full smile I’d seen from him, and shocking in its sweetness. “Vraiment? Vous parlez français?”
There’s really no excuse for what happened next. I think maybe I just wanted him to keep smiling at me. Because for some reason I said, “Oui oui. Un peu.”
And then, to my horror, he rattled off God knew what.
Leaving me to scrape the bottom of the barrel of my GCSE French, for which I’d received a D. “Um…um… Je voudrais aller au cinema avec mes amis? Ou est la salle de bain?”
Utterly perplexed, he pointed. So I was obliged to go the bathroom.
When I slunk back, he immediately confronted me with “You don’t speak French at all, do you?”
“No.” I hung my head. “I mean, my mother used both when I was growing up, but I still turned out stubbornly monolingual.”
“Then why didn’t you just say that?”
“I…don’t know. I guess I assumed you didn’t speak French either?”
“Why on earth would I imply I could speak French, when I couldn’t?”
I stuffed a teetering forkful of pie into my mouth. “You’re right. That would be a deranged thing to do.”

I truly hope one day some q! will actually get q!bbh and team up with him. I know he can be hard to deal with because of his pranks, the fact that he never admits when he's wrong and that he has a hard time trusting others, but I'm getting tired of hearing them wanting to go against him. I know it's all fun and game between cc! friends, but idk... It would be so nice to have someone, not even a big group, just one person having his back...

now i get to clear out my 'paste 150x150 WIPs obsessively to check for flaws' sheet!
gonna highlight these three- when i put my first attempt at the lineart+flats next to the more complex official robot pet examples i'd collected, it looked OFF and i couldn't figure out why. my lineweights seemed okay, and it didn't feel unclear to me at the smaller size, and those are usually the areas where my initial drafts need work.
i eventually realized that it was the proportions that were off, and i needed to redraw the feet and hands to be bigger to better match the cartoony proportions of the official pet designs. i probably could have pushed mine even harder than i did, but i think the final lines were definitely an improvement! also you can see when i realized it was missing its lower jaw in my original lines, lmao

so then the successor stuff kinzo was doing can be read as a replication of two traumas instead of merely the one. forcing kids to re-enact not only the trauma of his forced marriage but also the trauma of losing beatrice. on and on the cycle goes forever

Coming out the gate swinging with Fai theorising that perhaps the time loop keeping these people away from the festival could even be a good thing, depending on the festival.
INTERESTING. Love the dark implications. Big fan of the off screen horror that would imply being in a time loop forever would be PREFERABLE.
And of course this comes from Fai, the survivor of so many tragedies that naturally it’s him that considers this. If you wanted you could even draw a parallel to Fai in the pit, trapped outside of time with no escape while his entire kingdom was slaughtered off screen. How interesting that, with that context, being in the pit is almost preferable to what would have happened if he hadn’t been.

Jason & Bruce in Legends (1986)
[Jason: Yeah -- and maybe they won't! I mean, I was almost killed by the very people we were supposed to be protecting!
Bruce: I can't believe that was intentional--! Goaded by Gordon G. Godfrey, they were out of control -- didn't know what they were doing --!
Jason: Oh, I think they knew exactly what they were doing, Bruce! I think maybe deep down, they all really hate us -- maybe they fear the Batman more than the criminals do! Maybe we remind them too much of everything they're not and can never hope to be!
Bruce: You're wrong, Jay.]
Started reading this comic bc of Captain Marvel (this is the one where he gets framed for murder), but I was caught by this little argument between Bruce and Jason after the latter was caught in a mob that was being influenced by G. Gordon Godfrey into a riot and then injured.
Jason changes his mind and saves the day later, of course, but I wonder what the Red Hood would think of it looking back.
Billy has this really nice moment later:
Guy echoes Jason's earlier concerns and Billy kinda rebukes him here.
Idk if I'd call the whole "kids can't be convinced that heroes aren't needed and that's why Darkseid's plan is doomed to fail" etc thing the best writing ever but I've definitely seen worse and more obnoxious around.
And then Justice League International is founded and Wonder Woman does a Batman where she leaves without them noticing and all of the heroes present sigh wistfully and goes, "She's such a badass." All is right in the universe.
I also get psychic damage from seeing comics!President Ronald Reagan and Superman interact amicably throughout the whole run.
