Come Nightfall deleted scenes: Esme's garden

[in which Bella, visiting the abandoned Cullen house, reminisces on a conversation she had with Esme]

I stopped at the slope of the backyard to stare at Esme’s garden. Abandoned. In the heat of the moment, everything must have been abandoned. Drawing closer to the enclosure, I noticed none of the fall produce had ever been harvested. She left it here to die.

They left this whole place to just...rot.

She met me on the other side of the wire fence, beaming a smile stretching so wide, she closed her squinted eyes. The black bow of her sun hat knotted at the corner of Esme’s jaw, the tails trailing down her caramel-brown waves of hair. She flexed her hands for me to see her donned in her new brown gardening gloves. “Oh, darling Isabella, I love these, thank you—and I certainly needed a new pair.”

Edward had been more than happy to oblige when I pressed him for gift ideas. “It’s the least I can do for all of the veg you’ve given us,” I laughed, blush rising to my cheeks. “And the gardening advice, too. I have more thyme than I know what to do with.”

I glanced back at the house. Whatever he was saying, I suspected it was about me. About us. Edward had gone inside to “briefly chat” (read: argue) with Carlisle.

Twenty minutes ago.

Or. Or not twenty minutes ago. Actually. Seven months ago. Maybe.

I unlatched the gate to the garden and stepped in. I don’t know why. I don’t know why I closed the gate behind me. I don’t know why I sat down on the dirt with my back brushing against the wire fence. I don’t know why—

“—you grow vegetables when you can’t eat them?”

When Esme gave me a small smile in return, I looked away at the rows of carrots. Everything had been perfectly planted, perfectly weeded, into a perfect, cheery green. Despite the recent rain, I could barely smell sodden dirt over Esme's scent: citrus and calming mint.

Her hands dug at a human’s speed into the dirt and pulled up the root system of a weed. “It helps pass time. It’s rewarding. Even though I can’t eat the vegetables.”

“It is a nice hobby,” I said. It made sense to mark the year in seasons. Years slipped quicker all the time, but seasons, at least, could not be ignored. “And it sounds rewarding—is rewarding. But—what do you gain?” If you can’t eat the vegetables? I refrained from saying that last part.

The Cullens all did that thing from time to time where they smiled sadly and stared off into the distance, catching up with some memory they thought they had left behind. Esme was no different, but her lips held steady at whatever memory she was recalling.

“Perspective,” she told me. “I’ve lost a lot in my life. In my early years, no matter how much I loved Carlisle and Edward, no one could touch the pain I held from my loss. I wouldn’t let them. And—let’s just say, I began to understand how vampires could go mad if they’re not careful.”

“It sounds so difficult,” I said with a sympathetic tone but knew it would come across as hollow. What did I know? “I’m sorry. I mean, I’ve lost too, but I can’t imagine...”

“Loss can be visceral no matter how many times you experience it,” said Esme. “It can hurt. But an eternity of holding onto pain will break you quite quickly. It very nearly broke Carlisle, once upon a time. Edward, as well. All of us.”

I looked around at the uprooted weeds strewn around her, the baby shoots that barely poked through the grass. “I’m sorry you’ve been through so much,” I said in a soft voice. “I know it—can be difficult. To let go. Sometimes.”

My cheeks burned. Everything I said was touched by the uncertainty of youth. Like a feeling I knew but didn’t understand.

“Sometimes,” she echoed. “The hurt dulls eventually. When I garden, I can understand loss—the inevitability of loss—in a detached context. I can learn what to let go and what to keep. I’ve given you many tomatoes this summer—”

“Thanks again,” I said with a grin.

She beamed at me. “Oh, darling. You know I’m always happy to provide. Of course, it goes without saying, most of my tomato plants died before they made it to your table. If I hadn’t weeded them out three months ago, the whole crop would have died.”

“No kidding?” I stared at the tomato stalks, still drooping with ripening tomatoes. “Do you usually have a problem with tomatoes? I heard they can be kinda tough to grow.”

“Mm. They are. Though the reward is certainly worth the effort.” She sat back on her heels and gazed at her garden. “I suppose I don’t ever see it as a problem, really. It always happens. All these carrots, the cabbages, the basil, they have all died at least once. They always die. There is always loss.”

“But I don’t get, like— What do you do with the vegetables that do grow?” It was the closest I would get to asking her why she even grew vegetables if she couldn’t eat them.

“I share. I’ve made pies for school fundraisers, I’ve sold produce at farmers' markets, asked gardening enthusiasts for advice…. It invites people into my life. It allows for a different sort of cultivation. Even when I lose, I win.”

And when she looked at me again, the smile that had leaked into her eyes now spread across her lips. It bled through the entirety of her.

My mind flashed to Emmett and his peculiar penchant for baking. “I thought that’s what vampires tried to avoid,” I said, and she chuckled with me. “Inviting humans into their life.”

“Most vampires do try to avoid integration for their sake. But we Cullens take the road less traveled. For good reason.”

“What’s that?”

The sparkle in her eyes returned, and when she turned to me again, the ribbons on her hat slipped off the back of her shoulder. Esme laughed as if the joy bubbling inside her couldn’t be contained. “The people in your life are what make life what it is! Even the people you’ll never know. That includes humans.”

Glancing back, I saw through the massive windows Jasper and Alice dancing together. Lost in their own world. Like always.

“I’m surprised you bother,” I said, then reddened. “I mean, I’m glad. Just. seems like the Cullen approach varies.”

Some, like Carlisle, were actively involved in the lives of humans. Others, like Emmett and Alice and Esme, had stayed in touch indirectly—through baking or fashion or gardening.

And then there were people like Rosalie. And Jasper. And Edward. Detached, seemingly, from everything.

Her smile never faltered. “Well. The others have their own reasons for being here. This is my reason for being a Cullen. I would have never survived if all I did was avoid the pain of loss and change. If I turned my back from my loved ones.” The satisfaction in her smile made me smile too. The fact she felt so sure about something made my heart pang with some longing that I didn’t pick up on at the time. “It helps. They help.” Her words died around us and got swept away in the warm summer breeze.

Jasper spun Alice and dipped her low; she flashed him all her teeth laughing. It made him laugh too. I couldn’t hear either of them.

“Aren’t you afraid?” I asked her, turning back. “That someday you’ll get hurt? Or that you’ll—hurt someone?”

“Loss and hurt come whether you invite them in or not,” she said quietly. Esme ripped another weed from the ground and tossed it into the growing pile.

“Then, I mean...I don’t get it.”

“Losses are much harder to endure without love to soothe the pain. It can swallow everything if you let it. If you’ve cultivated your heart, leave it open for others, you’ll find the loss easier to bear. And the fruits of your labor will taste even sweeter in the end.” She gave me a loving look. “Especially when they can be shared with the ones you love. Like you.”

“But can people really do it, you think?” I said, attention turning back to the house. “I mean, sounds kinda hard. Keeping your heart open. Knowing what—when—to let go.”

Another figure came into view on the second floor— Carlisle’s study.

Edward Cullen. Staring.

Heartbroken.

From my place in the dirt, I fixed my eyes on the dark, empty window.

“It’s always up to you what to keep and what to throw away,” was her whispered reply. “It is up to you to know when to move on.”

Wherever he was now, I hoped to god his choice had been worth it.

i love how the worldbuilding in season 1 of mlp is done omg. i love that the world and seasons are all managed by ponies, that sorta gets less emphasis in later seasons from what i see. i just thought it extended to rainbow dash’s clouds or the royal sisters with the sun and moon, but nah they physically change the seasons and are in charge of the weather. its super cute i love it

The Chain as Owl City Songs

You read the title; I gave each member of the chain an Owl City song (or more) XD

Some of these songs can go to multiple of the boys (most notably Wild, Twilight, and Legend; poor guys with girlfriend trauma).

Also disclaimer: this is mainly all of the songs I grew up with, so I won't have any songs from Owl City's newer albums (such as Cinematic and Coco Moon; especially Coco Moon as I haven't finished listening to that album at this time).

Legend

The first thing that came to mind was Strawberry Avalanche, since it kind of fits with the Koholint situation.

But I think the one that would best fit would be Angels (though it could also match with Twi and Wild).

For some more post-Koholint Angst, here's The Real World; I dunno, seems like a song Legend would belt out.

Twilight

Up All Night. No doubt. I've actually been thinking of this for so long I've been going crazy XD

(And this is mainly the song that can go with both Legend and Wild as well; be prepared for some heavy angst.)

Time

Originally what I had was Super Honeymoon (as kind of a joke) but listening to it I realized it made more sense if he was married to Zelda, which is a nope. (Or I guess it could fit if he just thinks of his wife so highly, which is likely).

Tbh he was kind of hard to assign an Owl City song to (like Four), so I think Meteor Shower might also fit for some Time Angst.

(Or Dental Care or Rugs from Me To You for some dad jokes hehe.)

(Bonus: Tennis Elbow from Sky Sailing; not technically Owl City but it's by the same guy.)

(Bonus Bonus: Unbelievable for that 90's nostalgia; unfortunately it doesn't mention Ocarina of Time but if this was Modern AU then Time would absolutely have 90's nostalgia... maybe...)

Hyrule

Plant Life. I think this song would kind of touch with that side of Hyrule who felt like he isn't like the other heroes

(It does have a slight romance undertone to it, but its only in the chorus/bridging lyric and isn't the main focus of the song I will admit.)

Wild

Wolf Bite. I know the title kind of suggests this should be Twi's song, but if you listen to it it kind of fits with the internal struggle that Wild goes through in the comics. (Plus if I could make animatics I would totally make an animatic of Wild to this song; ahhh I love Ultraviolet (the album this is from) so much).

Bird with a Broken Wing. Kind of self explanatory if you listen closely to the lyrics. (Actually, this could fit with Time... hm...)

Four

Oof, this was kind of a hard one. At first I was going to say that no song could match him, until I remembered...

The Technicolor Phase. Kind of color-centric for those who like them XD

Sky

Ongoing Series - Thai

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 9 of 12 - I love this show so damn much. This may be my KinnPorsche. It’s just so endlessly entertaining in a perfectly unhinged way. I love that they looped Tharn’s dad back into the murder investigations.

You know kinksters have invented necklaces that can’t come off… right? Just saying.

Meanwhile, would it still be BL if our seme didn’t wake up from drowning and instantly go chase snake?

No. No it would not. 

Remember the one hard and fast rule of BL? When a seme gives a BJ it’s penance. Phaya is apologizing to Tharn for leaving him behind.

Heh. Hard and fast. I kill me. 

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 10 of 14 - How is this absurd creature managing to rise in the ranks? Pavel turned in some stellar grief and ALANJEFF have my whole heart. I make Ikea puns in the... Trash watch happening here.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 7 of 12 - The make-out montage was absolutely charming and very much American rom com style - interesting (and rare) to see in a BL (not to mention from OffGun. How far we have come since Puppy Honey?)

Meanwhile, another wonderful grandma in a BL!

Next week we do an actual harken back to Puppy Honey, so obviously I’m now enjoying this whole show way more than before. I think it helped that I watched it earlier in the week, when it wasn’t competing with any other BLs. 

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - Not gonna lie, I knew from you all that this was gonna be a rough ep. But I very clearly remember the penultimate Bad Buddy ep so I now have slightly more trust than others in GMMTV on this matter. 

That said, this was a crap episode.

You can’t set Mork’s truth and character motivation reveal up like that and then have his lover choose to dismiss him in a way that diminishes not just both character's growth AND all of Mork's actions towards Day, but also our faith in every other character. It was a shitty narrative thing to do to us, and it was a shitty thing to do to Mork. And that doesn’t even take into account the forgiveness allotted by the story to Day’s unrepentant excuse for a mother.  The doom should have been handled differently. The mom shoudl have leaned in even more evil and actively lied to split them apart.

I don't know if they can redeem this misstep in the final episode. But I'm interested to see them try. That said, this plot seem to be true to the book. 

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8 of 12 - A major trigger has landed. But also it’s clear who’s fault that incident was... and it’s not Him’s. So Blue's so-called-friend really is unhinged. This episode was a little bit more engaging than last week, but it’s only because stuff actually happened. I’m still not sure I enjoyed it. 

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 12fin - Despite the fact that I’ve been annoyed by the show the last couple of episodes, I’m still sad for it to end. It was a good reveal and First had the right response. Also a very sports way to end it. Sprite is a v clingy bf. 

In brief?

A messy very Thai pulp sports romance that actually managed to involve sports in an identical twins trading-places plot. Basically Not Me meets HIStory 2 Crossing the Line (although vastly inferior to either) with an endearing main character and a good lead pair (poor things), both soapy and earnest without too much camp. It tried so hard but the plot, side couples, and extraneous characters let us down. Passable if not great. 7/10 

Time the series (Thai Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Eh. Whatever.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Funny how quickly he retracted that confession and everyone called him out for doing it too soon (including me from a narrative beats perspective). It was a cute screw up - I see what your meta-arse is doing there, Japan. Also our Tokyo-boy’s serious reserved earnestness is extra adorable in the surrounded by Osaka enthusiasm context. His accidental flirting is that much more heart wrenching for our poor baby seme.  And they ended this ep with honorific negotiations!! Be still my heart. I’m really adoring this show.

Your hyung romance super fan is back in the game! 

Meanwhile the Osaka accent is beyond adorable. 

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 8 - Japan what are you doing? I do love the not-sorta-ex from the past. 

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 10fin - I loved all the young people in the hawker center supporting the campaign against the terrible mother. They make a good domestically sappy couple. But that is Taiwan's specialty.

In brief?

A sweet if aimless story about a writer and a chef finding love via noodles, fake dating, and family challenges. If it had a tighter script and a shorter run, more like a KBL this might’ve been quite special. But it didn’t and it lost me too many times. 6/10

I don’t like to be disappointed by Taiwan.

Chain as Cryptids au: Huggability

My back hurts, have some comfort! Characters are ranked by who gives the best hugs to the worst hugs, and a little bit of an explanation!

1. Sky

Do I really need to explain myself? He’s Sky. He’s the softest, sweetest, most cuddly hero to ever exist and we love him for that. He’s kind of known for taking a random hero into his arms, wrapping his mighty wings around them, and then flopping onto the ground and falling asleep. He’s just. So soft. His wings? So warm. Every hero- even Legend, who’s pretty touch averse- would kill to be wrapped up in his crimson feathers. (Eh, except maybe Time. At first). He has a knack for finding whichever Link needs a hug the most and seeking them out.

2. Twilight:

This guy? Is extremely gentle. He’s so incredibly strong but also so incredibly soft. His Hylian hugs are second only to Sky’s, but he also had the added bonus of being a Shapeshifter! One moment, he’s got a Link all wrapped up in his arms and the next, he’s a purring cat on their lap. A wolf wrapped protectively around them. Warm and cuddly and always so careful. Gotta love Twilight.

3. Suprisingly (?), Legend:

Legend’s pretty touch averse most of the time. But when people need him, he’s there. He has so much love in his heart that he keeps bottled up. He has experience, and he has a knack for reading people. He knows exactly what they need.

4. Wind:

Little big brother. He’s surprisingly good at comforting the others and when he wants to be, he’s biggest cuddle bug in the world (second only to Sky, I guess haha). He’s really good at curling up and holding on tight, and he definitely 100% uses his younger age to his advantage. You wouldn’t tell the child to let go, right? You wouldn’t tell the child to get up. Even though, in reality, he’s comforting them more than they’re comforting him. He lets them think that they’re being the strong ones- it’s his little trick haha.

5. Hyrule:

Little guy. His hugs are always warm and gentle since he’s absolutely buzzing with magic. Fairy magic is inherently healing, so even if he’s not actively casting spells, the others are affected by his Good Vibes when they hug him! Having a bad day? Not anymore, Hyrule won’t let it happen. (Disclaimer: when he’s in his True Form, the two inch tall fairy, it isn’t wise for the others to try to hug him. Unless they’re Four and are also two inches tall.)

6. Ravio:

TOUCH STARVED BABY!!! GIVE HIM A HUG!!! Ravio is so eager to be affectionate haha! He kind of jumps directly on top of Legend like all the time, and when be hugs people, be squeezes them tightly as if he’s making up for lost time. While this is comforting to some, it might catch others off guard. I think he should be tied with Hyrule and Four but that’s not how these things work haha.

7. Four:

Four’s hugs are good hugs! They would be higher up on the list if it weren’t for their horns getting in the way. Sky’s go-to move is to rest his chin on peoples’ heads when he cuddles, but the top of Four’s head is deadly. Because they’re shorter than almost everyone in the Chain, the horns will get in the way. It’s no problem! The others can work around them! But they are gonna knock them down a few points. Sorry, Four.

8. Time:

This man. This God. Is so incredibly bad at being social. He’s awkward and not very good at reading social cues. And that’s not because he’s not mortal, it’s because he was raised by a tree. He’s not sure when it’s appropriate to hug the other Links (he’s more confident with Malon and his children), so he just tends to leave them alone. His philosophy, in this and in everything, is that if he gives them space, they’ll eventually come to him. That’s… not always correct. His hugs have great potential- he’s big and gentle- but he can’t give good hugs if he doesn’t give hugs.

9. Wild:

Wild doesn’t really… hug. He’ll sit next to a Link and flop against them. He’ll lean. But he doesn’t quite understand to wrap his arms around, and he doesn’t respond well to someone wrapping their arms around him, feeling trapped. So the leaning is about as close as they’re gonna get haha! And that’s perfectly fine! He’s not heavy (like at all) but he is warm (absolutely buzzing with spirit magic), so he’s always a welcome snuggle buddy. Just as long as he doesn’t try to steal their things while he’s half on top of them haha!

10. Warriors:

I’m sorry, I truly am. He’s a sword. He doesn’t do hugs. And even if he did, his physical form is metallic. Cold and hard and just about the least comforting ever. I love the guy, but this just isn’t his strong suit.

SPY × Family: Chapter 94 analysis unhinged thoughts

hello hello! i am back with my thoughts for the latest chapter! please note that there are spoilers ahead for chapter 94! (Long-ish post incoming?)

Okay, so I loved this chapter. I'm a person who loves locked room murder mystery type stories, so this definitely scratched that itch for me. Obviously, I'm biased.

Analysis (of sorts?):

Right off the bat I can say that this chapter isn't really oriented on emotions or certain character dynamics. It is pretty plot heavy (but. not to the main plot. this chapter in itself has a plot to its own, but I really really liked it).

So the chapter starts with Bondman facing off an enemy in a snowy mountain...

which, of course, inspires Anya to have an adventure of her own. She asks Loid to take her skiing, only to be flatly denied...

BUT! Agent Anya has tricks up her sleeve (threatening to cry), and that works on our dear, super-spy Agent Twilight (he's so weak and stupid y'all.)

side note:

he thinks he's soooo cool. he's not.

Anyway, we get Twilight trying to explain skiing to Yor, which... fails, kinda. we also get gymnastics from Yor, (SHE's the cool one), and a half-baked explanation from her about learning all that from a gymnastics teacher.

The Forgers are trapped in a snowy blizzard, which leads them to take refuge in a lodge. They meet a group of young college students, who regale them with a tale of a bloody snowman who kills people in the dark.

Might just be me, but this design reminds me of Type-F from the new Code White movie (note: this isn't exactly a spoiler, I haven't seen the movie, but this is what's on the wiki and in the trailers). The snowy backdrop + this Type-F-esque design might be a homage to the movie? Probably just me, though, haha.

Anyway, onto the main focus of the story (kidding, it's not):

WE COULD'VE HAD IT ALL..... YOR AND LOID SLEEPING ON THE SAME BED.... WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN....

(jk, it probably wouldn't have happened, but a girl can dream)

"Eh, why not?" Certainly, these words CANNOT exist in the vocabulary of THE Agent Twilight! Perhaps.... no, it can't be... he's finally RELAXED for once? Feeling secure enough to ASSESS THE LAYOUT FOR POSSIBLE ESCAPE ROUTES WITH HIS YOUNG DAUGHTER? No... it can't be possible....

(Sorry, I know I'm unfunny. I don't think that'll change)

But, genuinely, this just shows how at ease he is with his wife and daughter. He might not know it yet, but I know it (← somebody whose opinion isn't worth shit).

Finally, onto the main crisis of the story:

the would-be murderer.

There's something to be said about how he jumped into action to save the guy's life, (as one does), BUT. BUT

OHOHOHO. The minute Yor's in danger (see: the man reached out to grab her but Loid just grabbed his hand) he decides to find the killer to prove her innocence. (You know his adage? A spy should never draw attention to themselves.) The minute his WIFE was in danger he resolves to find the killer and prove Yor's innocence their guilt. HMMMMM. Agent Twilight, you ain't slick. I think you momentarily forgot about about your #1 lesson to never draw attention to yourself just to prove Yor's innocence. OHHHHHH. The fanfiction is fanfiction-ing

(I'M SORRY I'LL TRY TO BE FUNNY FROM NOW ON)

To summarize the rest of the chapter: Anya realises with her telepathy that the killer is the lodge owner, and meddles in the investigation to nudge Loid in the right direction, and the police arrive to the lodge to find the incident resolved. Everyone's happy, right?

Not... really.

Anya's excited because, "Wow, I solved a murder! So cool, best trip ever!"

But Yor and Loid aren't that happy. Loid is worried that this kind of meddling will get Anya in danger... and he's more worried that she isn't really grasping the gravity of the situation.

Which. She kind of isn't. A man was almost killed, but she's not showing any signs of shock? Remember, he was this worried even after the hospital visit where she makes a mess of that sand-model thingie, and after the bus hijacking arc, when she's hyped about the Stella, and he tells her that the Stella was "not for the reckless way you defied those hijackers."

Which.... is a lot of character development from the man who was A-OK with leaving her alone in the apartment, to now how he constantly worries about her wellbeing. Growth.

Also, another tidbit:

I feel like this chapter showcases another facet of his personality. Not Agent Twilight's, or Loid's, but [REDACTED]'s.

[REDACTED] always wanted to help. Even in the War Arc, when, in Luwen where he was staying at his great-uncle's house, we can see that he wants to catch fish for his and his family's dinner, while, in the backdrop, children are laughing and playing. It's always been in his character to help, and, hell, it's partly the reason he is who he is today. Agent Twilight wants to think that he left [REDACTED] behind after that fateful bombing in Luwen, but [REDACTED] is hanging around him like a ghost, and some of his character bleeds through the facade that is Agent Twilight, which is masked by the facade that is Loid Forger.

Final thoughts:

Loved the chapter. It's probably just me reading into it too much, but... that scene where he grabs the guy's hand who was trying to tie up Yor. Hm.

This entire chapter might have been a locked-room murder mystery type chapter, but I genuinely think that it showcases how much of an effect this family has had on Agent Twilight. What with taking Anya on a sweep of the premises to look for escape routes, to trying to prove Yor's innocence that definitely betrayed his number 1 rule as a spy... this man is truly so oblivious, I wanna cry.

(Also: did he not stop for a moment to think that him performing first-aid on the victim, or trying to build a radio from scratch OR playing detective to prove his wife's innocence IN FRONT OF A GROUP OF OSTANIAN PEOPLE would raise suspicions? Obviously, it was all overshadowed by the discovery of the would-be killer, but... at least one person had got to have been suspicious of Loid.)

(Also also: He's so weak. One look at her crying face and he's gone.)
