JKR being accused of holocaust denial is funny because of how disingenuous the whole thing is

Basically, someone accused her of upholding nazi ideology because the nazis were also against transgenderism and burnt books on sexuality research. She retweeted this with a tone of disbelief that someone would make that claim about her.

Afaic she was right at that point. It's absurd to claim that anyone who is against transgender ideology is a literal nazi, and claiming such is pretty outlandish outrage bait. If she had stopped there, I'd say she did nothing wrong, but of course she then proceeded to dig herself into a hole by trying to double down on the thing they were accusing her of by saying that trans people weren't nazis' main target. This is true, they weren't the MAIN target, but it's definitely going to ruffle feathers to say it the way she did. However, that just means she's easily baited, not that she's a literal nazi or a holocaust denier.

What makes it disingenuous is that, in this whole article feeding on the cancel culture mill by claiming that her being against radical transgender politics means that she is a holocaust denier and therefore a nazi and therefore an antisemite, there was no mention of the extremely relevant fact that Magnus Hirschfield was not just a sex researcher but also a Jew, and that this was persecuted as being a Jewish science. Unless JKR is going to say that transgenderism is a Jewish plot, it's incorrect to say that her position on this makes her a nazi, and it's honestly a bit disgusting and exploitative for people to be making such huge claims about how this makes her an antisemite when they are either themselves unaware (which would be really ignorant by this point) or don't care that Hirschfield was a Jew. We already know she's a transphobe, at this point people are just crying wolf about everything behind crocodile tears about antisemitism because they think it's the one sacred line people won't cross unless they're literally nazis. It's gross from every angle.

She has done nothing to change people's perception of her as a bigot, and she has seemed to give the worst possible answers in every situation, that is true, and she bears responsibility for at least some of her own victimhood. She has made herself a very easy target. But really, that's so insane. People just want to attack her because she's prominent and so easy to get a reaction out of that they know will make headlines. If they really wanted to keep people from hearing what she has to say, they'd stop considering it newsworthy and making dumbass articles about how she's a holocaust denier because she's against giving kids puberty blockers or whatever. Transphobia is getting to be the same as antisemitism in the way you're not allowed to question the claims and actions of the most extreme and bad-faith actors in those groups even if they deserve it because you've got to walk on eggshells around them or get burnt at the stake about it. So we let those movements be taken over by the crazy radicals because everyone's too afraid of looking like a bigot to question it and it's bad for everyone. I hate that the only options on the table about trans issues are either "they're all predators who should be arrested or killed" or "children should be encouraged to transition, it's not at all a sign of anything else wrong with society or psychology, it's totally fair to let men compete against women in physical sports, and anyone who says otherwise is basically Himmler." Neither of these are sensible and the fact that questioning them will get you outcast is a sign that you're dealing with dogma, not rational thinking or a genuine concern about anyone but a select few narcissists. No middle ground exists and it isn't in the best interest of trans people or society as a whole and a whole lot of you are too afraid to even admit that.

I just remembered that a long, long time ago I made a post defending J.K Rowling and for her bad writing in the Cursed Child (not her being homophobic, transphobic, racist, and other things, I wasn't aware of those things then and if I was I wouldn't have defended her)

And I just wanted to say, if that post is ever found, ignore everything I said in it, fuck that bitch, if I could go back in time and slap the shit out of my past self for looking up to that bitch and defending her shitty writing I would slap past me so hard my mom would feel it

Because the cursed child truly is poor writing with a lot of plot holes, doesn't follow what is in the passed books, the past characters are so out of character, new characters are poorly written, and so much more. Younger me didn't see this

I was talking to a friend of mine about the HP books in general, and how I used to love them and while I hate the books and J.K Rowling the HP universe itself is still something I love dearly, he said,

"You love the concept of it all, the magic, a magic school where you find another family with love and support, learning and fighting evil and solving mysteries with those you love, but you don't like the way she did it, her writing is what seems to ruin it all."

And... Yeah, he perfectly summed it up, she took something beautiful full of love and acceptance and ruined it for a lot of people by putting hate in it along with her own hate. That's why people still stick with the HP universe with their own headcanons and story lines while dissing the creator of it all

Hell, the Marauders fandom is the biggest part of the fandom and almost all the we know about them is completely made up by the fandom, plus in that part of the fandom for almost everyone Remus and Sirius are a gay married couple, Jegulus is on the rise, and a lot more queer headcanons

For the cursed child fandom Albus is in a gay relationship with his best friend, Teddy Lupin is genderfluid, and much more from that

And not to mention the beautiful OC's that people have made with so much diversity with OC's that are part of the LGBTQIA+, that are POC, that have different religions, that have disabilities (mental and physical), all different body shapes, and more, those are gorgeous and I love seeing them!!

We basically took her bad writing and made it something that can be beautiful. Is it canon? No, because she's a bitch. But do we still enjoy doing and having something so beautiful in our lives, yes we do.

So, J.K Rowling, thx (I guess, barely deserve the thx) for giving us the concept of it all, but also fuck you for being a terrible human being and author :)

As a result, Kagome would never have come to the feudal era because the Jewel would never form inside her body, Miroku would have been swallowed up by the Wind Tunnel, alongside any illegitimate kids he might have had, and Sango would have never lost her village. BUT HE DIDN’T!???? WHY!????

This is the most evil, sinister, douche canoe, mastermind in anime itself. A monster who has killed thousands of people- murdered entire towns and villages on a whim, and to create a mother freaking river of blood to open a gate to the underworld, who had been plotting for over FIFTY YEARS. This is a man who sold his soul to demons because he was so lust-hungry for a god damn priestess and was bitter towards Inuyasha for “stealing her” from him. The protagonists have zero motivation, don’t care about anything, never ask questions, and are literally just existing for the purpose to exist because a perverted old man (Sumisawa) wants to live out a fantasy where he can have a child bride. 🤢 There’s no way this can be getting a second season. No way.

If this followed OG Inuyasha at all, MirSan would have been busting their asses to find InuKag and save them. Koga would have murdered Yawaragi (?)(I don’t know her stupid name) for selling Moroha into slavery AND he never would have pawned her off to someone else at all!!! This is KAGOME’s kid. Koga would kill himself before letting anything happen to Kagome or Moroha.

And Sesshomaru. LORD SESSHOMARU. This man despises schemes. Loathes them. He hates manipulation. He is straight forward, proud, and the literal guardian of children. He would never go along with Kirinmaru, and he sure as hell wouldn’t marry one of the two kids he’s been protecting for a solid year. And Rin. She was eight years old when she lost her parents and brothers to bandits, and became a traumatized mute because of it. She was then repeatedly abused by the villagers who took her in. Later, she was killed by wolves. Revived by Sess, she travelled with him. Later dies AGAIN because her soul got snatched away when she was kidnapped to the underworld. Revived by InuKimi.

And- what??? You mean to tell me she’s supposed to be dying for a THIRD TIME in the trash heap you call a show??? Dying, after having been raped and abused by the adult who was meant to be a safe space, a guardian, a protector. Forced to give birth. And no one fucking cared. A fifteen year old girl.

Yeah, no. This ain’t Inuyasha. It’s a fucking insult. To the series, to those who hold the series close to their hearts, and to those who have gotten out of some very very dark times because of this series being such a comfort.

it's really sad that they lost the plot like this. a month ago, after TPWK released they were telling people that if u think harry is /definitely/ cis you're transphobic. and now it's queerphobic to recognise clear coding?? also the fandom might have been invasive but we *do* have a lot of babygate info but suddenly it's wrong to point out a fake baby bump?? how can someone change their entire belief system in a month. truly disappointing.

Hi hun, I am a bit reluctant to keep talking about this BUT, lots of people are still catching up and processing all that happened so, sure. I agree, that blog’s opinions now give me whiplash compared to what they’ve said before. I can’t say why people change their whole perspective so suddenly; people are complex and we only see what’s on tumblr.

I’d like to just mention that, as a lot of you know, I grew up in a very conservative evangelical household. I really think you could call evangelicals a cult; they have their own science (see: the Creation Museum, which provides “evidence” the world is only 7,000 years old), they believe they’re persecuted truth tellers and every other religion, not to mention even every other SECT of Christianity, is wrong and that those who believe in it will go to hell.

I say this because I’ve been watching a LOT of cult documentaries lately, and something they ALL have in common: the tearing down and isolating of a member until all they have left IS the cult. It’s exactly like an abusive relationship but on a larger scale. Cults redefine your entire identity and purpose, they cut you off from family and friends; whether it’s Q anon or that Vow sex cult or Heaven’s Gate, cults start with the basic premise that there is something WRONG with you, LACKING inside you, MISSING within you, and that you need to surrender yourself to that group in order to find your true purpose in life.

There is nothing WRONG with realizing you’re queer via watching Harry caress Louis’ arm. The missing hole inside you that is filled by finally coming to terms with your sexuality is NOT akin to surrendering to a fucking cult. See how these things are conflated? That kind of thinking stems directly from homophobic conversion therapy talking points. Embracing your identity via a community that celebrates queer love and queer coding and queer lyrics and queer music is FINDING A HOME, not jointing a cult.

Some people need to learn to recognize the difference.

My story has a transgender 19 yo boy. (Ftm). One of my characters is extremely transphobic. How can I have a transphobic character in my book without making out myself to be transphobic, because I’m absolutely not and I don’t want anyone assuming I am.

I first want to suggest examining the role of the transphobia in the story. What parts of this character’s transphobia are expressed in the text, and why are they there? Is this to cause conflict? Portray the character as a bad person? I think it’s something you need to be able to justify.

I would also consider how these beliefs reflect on the transphobic character, and psychologically why they are transphobic. Transphobia isn’t some kind of serious pathological illness or anything (generally transphobia causes mental illness in trans survivors of it, leading us to be prosecuted further). But all attitudes of social bigotry come from somewhere. They are not innate.

Maybe the character wasn’t exposed to trans people, maybe they were exposed to people who propagandized that trans people were a danger to society. Maybe they just grew up around cissexism (like most of us have) and didn’t want to think twice about it. Maybe they’re just stubborn and doubled down once after being called out - they couldn’t deal with the rejection or idea that someone has more knowledge (power) than them. Being wrong is something a lot of people can’t deal with. And once they double down on their mistakes instead of growing from them, some people will keep digging that hole and it’s harder to turn back and face all that guilt you’ve racked up from doubling down.

My point is: don’t just put transphobia in the plot just because. Making something ~more realistic~ isn’t a good reason to potentially expose trans readers to something unnecessarily traumatizing with no sense of closure or trust in what they are reading to prioritize their protection in the matter.

It is also perfectly reasonable to acknowledge or briefly mention that a character is transphobic without showing actual scenes of it happening. I’ve said this before here, but the whole “show don’t tell” advice is not all that great when it comes to things like ensuring proper representation of complex issues. Sometimes you have to tell. (It’s generally the smoothest in dialogue, just as a tip.)

I also personally feel like it’s still good writing to talk outright about things which are seldom talked about in general. The whole reason observational comedy works for example, is because it’s people talking about things that everybody just kind of accepts without questioning. The commentary is a way to reflect on that and talk about why we accept it and if we should or not.

Another thing: your character’s transphobia cannot be treated neutrally within the story. Transphobia causes real and measurable harm and if you want to make trans readers safe, you need to treat the transphobia as serious as it is. I’m not asking you to make a big drawn out plot device of it, but you can’t just drop in transphobic characters without them being acknowledged to be transphobic characters. If they use specific arguments that seem convincing to the uninitiated, you need to call attention to the problems with those arguments somehow within the story. And the problems need to be clear.

Transphobia isn’t just a casual character trait. Someone’s character traits may lead them to transphobia, but it’s more complicated than that.

It also got a huge boost from a lot of educational systems who liked that it encouraged young kids to read, and so the books were practically shoved down our throats from elementary school on. That’s why you associate it with your childhood, not because it’s just too LEGENDARY and GENIUS to turn your back on, in retrospect it’s loaded with racism, plot holes, lgbt erasure, unlikable main characters, and senseless tangents that contribute nothing to the story. On top of all that? The writing isn’t even that good. So much of the books are clunky and awkwardly phrased, not to mention her scene transitions are terrible. The fact that they were written by a narcissistic, racist transphobe who is literally incapable of accepting even a modicum of criticism without pitching an actual temper tantrum all over twitter should honestly only be the straw on the camel’s back for anyone still clinging to that dumpster fire. The books were never good, JK Rowling is a piece of shit, and we all need to find something else to be nostalgic about.

John agrees to go fix canon or w/e, he goes back and collects teenage versions of Rose, Dave, Jade, Jane, Dirk, Jake and Roxy; they’re all teens and he keeps calling them “kids” and thats kinda cute

Adult John + 7 teenagers go to fight Caliborn; Caliborn locks the beta kids in the homestuck juju box thing (which was foreshadowed in earlier homestuck i fucking THINK??)

The beta kids are then suddenly teleported into the final battle against Lord English, in which he kills everyone but John

Davepeta sacrifices themself to force Lord English into the black hole

Also Lord English bites John and he’s dying I guess and floating towards the black hole

Terezi finds him and they both find sanctuary in a car thats also floating around. Also they have sex here

They both teleport to Earth C where John then immediately DIES

B PLOT: Jane is running for president of the world, to which everyone insists that this is a bad idea because Hussie spun a wheel and decided that she was Facist now

Karkat worries that she’ll regulate troll reproduction, and Dave convinces him to run for president against her

There’s also some like unresolved tension between Dave and Karkat, Jade tries to get the three of them to date but she comes across as pushy and weird and WILDLY out of character! But it goes nowhere in the end

It’s a race to find endorsements! Jane has Dirk helping her with her campaign, Roxy and Calliope (who are dating and nonbinary! Woo hoo!) choose to stay neutral

Jake is also like super famous and also has a reputation for sleeping around? Anyways both sides of this ~Political Intrigue~ know that getting his endorsement would basically entail victory

Jane invites him over and they end up making out until Jake gets nervous and leaves, its very weirdly sexually charged and does Nothing For This Meaty Story

Dave and Karkat manage to convince Jake to endorse Karkat; but during the endorsement speech, Jake suddenly blurts his love for Dirk Strider and starts endorsing Jane

Which leads to…

C PLOT: Dirk and Alt!Calliope are fighting over the narrative of the story

Dirk is also weirdly transphobic about Roxy

Rose is like… dying? And Dirk is trying to convince her to become her Ultimate Self or some shit??? This results in Dirk essentially kidnapping Rose and making Kanaya Freak Out

Dirk’s narrative control forces Jake to confess his love for Dirk and endorse Jane, so thats great

Dirk also tries to use his narrative control powers to force Dave and Karkat into confessing their love for each other, but Dave fights off his control and kisses Karkat on his OWN terms, which, if ignoring the weird Dirk shit, is actually pretty valid

This all ends with Dirk shrugging Jake off and taking Rose on a spaceship far away, prompting the rest of the cast to prepare a rescue mission

PRETTY WEIRD RIGHT?

CANDY:

John decides not to go fix canon, Roxy gets really happy about this and almost immediately decides that they’re in love w him and starts dating him, Calliope is noticeably upset by this

Also Calliope insists that John bring Gamzee to Earth C. Gamzee is now here and no one is happy about it

There’s still weird stuff between Jade, Dave and Karkat, what with Jade still trying to get the three of them to date; this results in Jade dating Dave and Jade having a kismesis with Karkat, and Dave and Karkat not having a relationship despite the ~obvious love between them~. It’s repeatedly mentioned that the relationship dynamic is unhealthy. Nothing is done about it

SPEEEEEAAAAAAAKING OF UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS

Jane goes to visit Jake and they get drunk and sleep together and then Jane manipulates him into a relationship? I’ve seen posts making Jake out to be the bad guy because of this

Y’know, I debated not answering you bc what you sent sounds like the typa shit that attracts unwanted discourse. So if that was your intent (and I mean this with all sincerity): go fuck yourself.

I’m not sure where you got the idea that I’m "still devoted to" C3, esp since the last piece of art I made for that ship was pre-KTGG -- nearly a year ago. That was also the last time, until recently, that I spoke about C3 at all. So ???

I will admit I didn’t answer that ask very thoughtfully when I originally responded -- mostly bc I assumed by now ppl understood my stance on this issue -- so I went back and edited for clarification. However, if you’d read my about page instead of jumping to conclusions, you’d know where I stood.

But since that clearly didn’t happen, I’ll spell it out for you: I used to ship C3. As of right now, I don’t. However, during the time in which I did, I was in the process of building an extensive backstory AU that I am still very much attached to and enjoy creating content for. It was designed specifically to establish Copia as an outsider -- not a member of the Emeritus family -- which has been my view of him since since day fucking one (x).

One scroll through my blog will show you none of this is new. Copia's underdog status plays a vital role in how I draw, write and headcanon him, as well my general attachment to his character. Sure, you can sit there and claim I dreamt all this up for the purpose of shipping, but you'd also be lying out of both sides of your mouth. If my development of this AU was nothing more than ""justification"" for C3, my blog wouldn't be littered with loads of art and comics focused on the rest of the family and their respective dynamics. (x) (x) (x) Not to mention the countless memes and shitposts that have goddamned nothing to do with any of this.

Anyway, for me, an AU only works if you can establish a very clear departure from what's been described in canon. KTGG presented several plot holes I had never previously considered, and these muddied waters made me unsure of how to continue world building. I don't want to publish anything until there are no surprises left, so until we get more official information regarding this lore, I have temporarily pulled the breaks on this project.

Still, none of this is reason to completely dismantle something I've been working on since 2018. Nor does it suddenly make the material itself "problematic". I should be able to keep my AU (C3 storyline or not) without ppl like you accusing me of being some incest-obessed fujoshi simply bc I chose to view the source material in a way you don't personally like.

From last summer forward, every time I’ve been asked about the topic of my AU, the answer never contained any mention of C3 (x) (x) (x) bc I don't currently ship C3. If by "devoted to" you meant "it's on the back burner and also the stove isn't on" then sure, I'm super devoted.

But even if this weren't the case -- even if the amount of currently unanswered questions didn't bother me and I plowed ahead with my story no holes barred, what exactly would my crime be? Why would an AU created to explore the non-canon backstories of Copia (a Catholic orphan) and Papa 1 (his unrelated mentor) suddenly become problematic just bc once in a blue moon a scene appears in which Copia has a boyfriend? Considering all content I've made for C3 sees them as completely unrelated and has also been 100% SFW, what line have I crossed? I know my lane. I'm not mlm (I'm not wlw either, which is what you're trying to peg me as) so I would never create explicit content for a community to which I don't belong. But if you think LGBT+ folks can only make material tailored to their specific identities in order to not be fetishy, then I've got some fuckin news for you and you're not gonna like it.

Anyhoo, I don’t believe for one second that you’re this casual by-standing "outsider" -- not least bc you knew exactly where to find the post where I first addressed the plot twist possibility, but lmfao whatever you say bubs. I also love that you’re on the "outside" while simultaneously in the know about what the fandom collective has decided re: What If Copia Is An Emeritus. You need to get your story straight.

Damn near everyone in this fandom has created some sort of AU -- whether that be a world where they self-ship, a universe in which none of the Papas died, or, I dunno, one full of dragons and dinosaurs :-) The fact that you're specifically honing in on my AU with insane and disgusting out-of-left-field accusations tells me everything I need to know about both you and your motives, so listen very closely: there is nothing wrong with creating an AU that diverts from canon. Despite what you think, viewing Copia as unrelated to the Emeritus family is pretty goddamned normal around here. And considering Tobias obviously wanted us to think of him this way (and let us do so for over a year and a half) it's easy to see why so many ppl prefer that concept to the story we'll probably get.

You are not the boss of me. You are not the judge of my character. You have no authority over me, and you need to stop talking as if you do. Your tone is condescending and sexist -- which is odd, considering you're not speaking to a woman. I'm definitely not a fujoshi, but you quite possibly might be a transphobe. Manon asks Dorian about Elide and the Thirteen and Dorian is like “who the hell are those guys” and Manon gets all sad and I’m :(((((

The rest of the chapter is Manon angsting about all the shit she’s been through lately. Since I like Manon and she has reason to be upset, I don’t have anything to make snarks about so next chapter.

Lorcan was still wondering what the hell he was doing three days later

Oh fucking great, I just witnessed the murder of my son Dorian and now I gotta read in Lorcan’s POV? Just keep kicking me while I’m down why don’t you, SJM.

“It’s going to rain.” [Elide] slid a flat glance at him. “I do know what thunder means.”

“Drink,” Elide commanded him. Lorcan debated telling her not to give him orders, but … he liked seeing this small, fine-boned creature in action.

What the fuck does that mean?? Fine boned?? Is that really a way people describe others???? What the fuck am I reading???

So Lorcan drank and watched [Elide] while she watched others. So many calculating thoughts beneath that pale face, so many lies ready to spill from those rosebud lips.

I’m so tired like. You guys have done nothing but argue and avoid each other and now Lorass is getting horny at the sight of Elide’s lips I’m so tired.

[Elide] was going to leave. Tomorrow, whenever the carnival rolled out. She’d likely hire one of these boats to take her northward, and [Lorcan] … he would go south. To Morath.

Elide walked out of the third tavern, Lorcan on her heels. They hadn’t spoken once since she’d gone into that first inn. He’d been too lost in contemplating what it would be like to suddenly travel on his own again. To leave her … and never see her again.

I am utterly baffled you two have been nothing but assholes to each other!!! Like seriously you haven’t done anything nice for each other!!! Like wtf SJM is trying make us all :’((( about them splitting up but I can’t wait until this stupid subplot ends!

Elide reveals she can’t read to Lorass and he tries to compliment her, but...?

He wondered if he would have ever noticed if she hadn’t told him. “You seem to have survived rather impressively without it.”

I mean, good on him for not judging her, but like, she was locked up in a tower doing maid work? Reading skills really wouldn’t have made much of a difference there.

Turns out their carnival co workers ratted them out and sent guards after them. Lorass hauls Elide over his shoulder and makes a run for it.

“The gates at the city entrance,” [Elide] gasped as muscle and bone pummeled into her gut. “They’ll be there, too.”

Holy shit that sounds painful. She’s not a sack of potatoes Lorass, try some gentleness.

Lorcan pocketed the axe he’d thumbed free

You literally just took out your axe like two paragraphs ago on the same page. What was the point of this?

They find some rando and force him to get them the hell out of dodge on his boat. Elide hears a splash but doesn’t think anything of it until she sees Lorass again.

[Elide] glanced at the hatchet at [Lorcan’s] side as he strode out of the cabin. “You killed him, didn’t you?” That was what the splash had been. A body being dumped over the side.

So, just to recap, according to Lorass.... killing an innocent man who helped you escape the guards; completely justifiable. Stealing something you suspect is bad from a woman you don’t even like; evil, unacceptable, crossing a line. 

“He might have had a family depending on him.” [Elide]’d seen no wedding ring, but it didn’t mean anything.

I was about to get tilted but SJM corrected herself. I hate the mentality that if you don’t have a spouse, you clearly can’t have a family who depends on you. Kids from previous relationships, parents, grandparents, siblings, they’re family too y’know.

Lorass finds out the Wyrdkey he carried is a fake and loses his shit.

Then Lorcan flung open the door, so violently it nearly ripped off its hinges, and hurled what looked to be the shards of a broken amulet into the river. Or he tried to. Lorcan threw it hard enough that it cleared the river entirely and slammed into a tree, gouging out a chunk of wood.

I enjoy his misery tbh. Lorass is so pissy he reveals to Elide that Alien was Celaena, or as I like to call her Celery, at one point.

“You knew, and you didn’t tell me. Why?” “You still haven’t told me your secrets. I don’t see why I should tell all of mine, either.”

I mean, yeah, hate to agree with Lorass but fair enough. You’ve both done nothing but lie to each other’s faces, why would he tell you that? I want to like Elide but all this shitty drama and bickering is making my affection for her wear thin.

Then - holy fucking shit, there’s like a bunch of huuuuuuge paragraphs of Lorass and Elide bickering and they’re so fucking big. This hurts my eyes to look at. I’m gonna screencap one of them, just to show you how fucking huge they are.

tl;dr because of some bullshit Lorass is staying with Elide because they both have business with Alien. Fuckin’ great, I love everyone’s agendas revolving around the main special snowflake, just fuckin’ great.

horror movie talk with LFR

My friend Lucy F. R. has really great taste in movies.

I don’t say that lightly. You all know (if you’ve been reading me a while) how fussy I am about horror/weirdshit and how many movies I’ve watched. It’s my actual hobby, unrelated to anything else I do, purely for enjoyment. It’s hard for me to find people to talk about movies with, really- my uncle, who first introduced me to horror movies, and weird cinema, and one or two friends. So I’m really happy to have a conversation here about movies with someone.

R:  you’re on a grimy southern/grind horror kick right now. But what genre do you like best? What feeling are you after?

LFR: Horror is my favorite genre, I just get very into specific branches. I always want to end up saying to myself “this is a GOOD movie”.

R: What’s the best of the batch you’ve been into recently?

LFR:The Dunwich Horror (the 70’s one), Ghost Galleon, House By The Cemetery, Werewolves On Wheels, and Tourist Trap.

R: Tell me about Werewolves on Wheels. I just watched Dog Soldiers again, and I’ve been on a werewolf kick.

LFR: Wait, you haven’t seen it? It’s about a small biker gang that are on their way to the desert and come across a monastery that they think is abandoned but come to find out it’s not and a mysterious cult interacts with them. The cult takes one of the biker girls and puts her in a ritual. The bikers take her back from them and go back on the road, but don’t know that ~one~ of them is now a werewolf at night.

R: People reading might not have seen it. I usually try to explain a little when I start talking about stuff, especially the lists I make.

I feel like this could turn into a list?

I saw a short film recently also with a werewolf- soldiers are in WWII, surrounded by Nazis in an old police station. There’s a woman in a cell that’s locked herself in and they get stuck in there with her. She’s a werewolf and they turn so they can beat the Nazis.

I feel like- the older werewolf stuff, I think 60s to early 80s, a lot of it was hippie panic. Manson references.

I felt like Werewolves on Wheels is also backlash on feminism, like a lot of gory stuff from that time.

LFR: It felt like a backlash on feminism and hippies.

R: with werewolves and vampires there’s the whole homophobic/transphobic thing too. “secret monsters” and all that.

what movies would you compare it to? what’s close to it, in feeling?

  LFR: In feeling as in how it made me feel while watching it for the first time: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House Of 1,000 Corpses, Ghost Galleon. I just know it’s a movie that I’ll recommend to everyone and watch over and over.

Aesthetics and mood-wise: Warriors, Clockwork Orange, Hammer Film movies.

R:yeah it’s got that grit to it. easy rider/warriors. I actually haven’t seen Ghost Galleon. Rip it up for me a little.

LFR: Oh man, so

I get really into bands and for the past few years I always look up what my favorite band member’s favorite movies are, or movies that feel like the music genre. So recently I’ve just been super into doom and stoner metal, naturally I’ve been listening to a lot of Electric Wizard. I asked a bunch of doom metal fb groups “what’s the most doom metal movie you’ve seen” and eventually I somehow found Ghost Galleon. It’s a movie that is not good. Very low budget. Like Ed Wood status. But it’s REALLY good.

These swim suit models go out on a shoot and stumble across a ship that should not be afloat still and is completely abandoned. They get stuck on the ship so friends come looking for them. But the ship’s crew is a satanic cult and they come alive and, to keep from spoiling, all hell breaks loose. And it’s THE most doom metal movie you will ever watch. It has it all- mood, aesthetic, and story wise.

R:so bad, it’s incredible. sounds perfect.

LFR: it’s on prime.

R: FUCK YEAH

R:when I started watching musician friends’ recommendations I ended up discovering Green Room.

The last time before that, it was Pighunt, which is to this day one of my favorite movies.

LFR: You told me to watch that one years ago. I recommend it to basically anyone who will listen to me.

R:it’s like the least sexist least racist southern-USA monster movie ever made.

LFR:Les Claypool’s roll in that has forever changed how I see him. When I saw Primus all I could see him as was a hillbilly preacher.

R: yep completely.

let’s talk about art horror. the weird shit. seen anything good there lately?

LFR:The Girl On The Third Floor. It was weird and a little comical, but I enjoyed it. I Am The Pretty Thing Living In The House is REALLY good but it’s a little weird and a major slow burn. And, Society, but that’s more body horror than art house horror.

R:Society is a classic. Body horror and class war. So amazing. I thought I am the pretty thing was a lot of fluff- I understand the drive to slow-burn right now, it’s nostalgic. But I think it’s one of the movies where they went too far into the slow burn.

If I’m going to wait 90 minutes, that girl better taste some damn butter. You know?

LFR: I can see why but I also saw it as more of a classic gothic horror story so the pace didn’t bother me too much.

R:I kind of got tired of Gothic horror at some point. The slow burn. I think I was too interested in French and Korean extreme and gore for a minute.

LFR: I’m a sucker for gothic horror and black and white universal monsters.

R:I liked Late Phases- that kind of straddled the line for me really well. Which brings us back to werewolves, strangely enough.

I have been seeing more elderly characters in movies, which I like a lot.

  LFR: I love creepy old women and demonic children in films. I feel like The Visit sparked people’s interest in elderly characters in horror.

R: yes! I agree. I really like variety- diversity. ” 5 teenagers on a road trip ” movies… it gets tiring. Bland.

not to mention that there’s actually Black people and elderly women in movies now.

LFR: Road trip gone wrong horror is good but, you gotta do it right.

R:tell me about one that you think gets it right.

LFR: The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It paved the way.

R: it did pave the way. that there were pockets of deep weird hate in this country- I think the suburbs were really shocked by it. but if you grew up in bumfuck nowhere it was less shocking.

I think Dead End is the ultimate “road trip gone wrong” movie. Urban legend plot, Ray Wise, Lin Shaye. Just incredible pacing.

LFR: I haven’t seen that one, I’ll have to watch it.

R:oh, you’re going to love it.

I feel like the Hills Have Eyes deserves a mention here. though it’s more a “trapped on purpose” movie than a road trip.

LFR: That’s a “vacation gone wrong” horror movie, and it’s definitely one of the best ones. Vacation and road trip movies are two different branches of a genre to me.

R:I think of them as “wrong turn” vs “bad directions”. like they stumbled into trouble is one genre. they were purposely hunted/trapped, is another.

LFR:Yes, exactly!

tell me about a movie that’s got a plot hole, or has kept you thinking afterward, lately. for me it’s been resolution/the endless, and residue. residue in particular. how do they keep that book? why such a dumb ending? resolution/endless bugs me and I have to watch it again- time loops force me to do math, and I end up a little obsessed with figuring out timelines.

LFR:Horror wise, 3 From Hell. I keep thinking about how different of a movie it originally was going to be. But also, still, HOW did they survive the shoot out from Devil’s Rejects just… miraculously??? And how come this new Firefly brother was never mentioned previously whatsoever??

R:OMG yes. I couldn’t. I got too wrapped up in plot holes to enjoy it!

LFR:I still enjoyed it for what it was but yeah, I was like WAIT WHAT??? every ten minutes.

R:what about not-horror?

LFR: Picnic At Hanging Rock.

R: oh yeah. that’s the kind of movie you think hard about the rest of the day. what’s your theory on the ending?

man I just went to find a photo from it and they made a show? what the hell.

have you seen The Fields? It’s set where I grew up, it’s got…a vibe. Stuck with me.

LFR: Honestly? I can’t come up with a theory on what happened. It just really feels like they simply vanished.

I haven’t seen it. Tell me about it.

(The Fields)

R: There’s a menacing thing in the cornfields. A kid has shitty parents and is sent to stay with family. The farm is in the middle of all cornfields… there’s an abandoned little amusement park that lures him. It’s based on an actual place- a tiny amusement park that flooded and was shut down. it’s still there abandoned, right next to the town I grew up in!

cornfields are extremely creepy. it’s so easy to get lost in them.

The main characters- it’s got all the bad mountain people shit going on, abuse, drinking, violence, and then more because of the presence in the fields. pretty good stuff.

not a slow burn. a medium burn.

LFR:I’m definitely watching it

R: you’ll like it. big Jughead mood.
