Continuing to go through oldish asks: The modded guy! Dude in his hat :)
[ID: A bust up colored marker drawing of Ethoslab. He is a curly white haired guy with warm brown eyes and pale skin. He is wearing a black mask and sweater, a greenish grey sleeveless hoodie vest, a yellow-tan scarf, and a blue and white mushroom cap on his head. He is facing to the right. Behind him is a brown square. The drawing is shaded and there is white speckled across it. End ID]

so recently, scar has gotten good at minecraft. like, really good. if you watch his old stuff, it doesn't take much to see that scar's strengths generally used to lie outside of the actual, run-around-without-dying-especially-on-a-pvp-server level of play. and that's fine, it wasn't his jig, and the people he's playing with really are very good and very experienced at this sort of play. so it never needed to be something that scar was good at because his fanbase mostly watched him for other reasons, so that just wasn't something he needed to be able to do.
but for a while now, especially noticeable over the life series, he's been rapidly improving at the sorts of particular skills that the life smp server values (and also certain skillsets involved in MCC, too). The water bucket clutches spring to mind, as well as the hot-guy stuff that make him such a lethal force with a bow. (It's honestly a shame that life smp doesn't have elytra -- he regularly one-shots people from the air on hermitcraft, and it's a fantastic bit.)
And it's just so good to see because like... he didn't have to go and do that! he went and practiced those skills, and got good at them, and then came and showed them off. and it was awesome, but also he made it so creative and entertaining, and he really didn't have to do any of it at all if he hadn't wanted to. people don't play on life smp because they're good at the technical elements of the game. more than anyone else, scar's particular shenanigans and the energy he brings to the server are what make him a great fit for the series. there are plenty of players on life smp who aren't great PVPers but who get by on politicking, or scheming, or storytelling, or just generally being a good time to be around, and each of them makes the smp tick and are valuable in their own way.
not to mention that life smp is made up of such a wonderful group of human beings that they'll do whatever it takes for you to fit in. to make your thing, and your particular energy and abilities, a part of of the series. to make it that you aren't hampered by your abilities and handicaps, whatever they may be. when skizz dies early on to some early misfortune in limited life, people are pretty clearly aware that he's one of the weaker players and it might impede his ability to have a full series. but don't worry, because half the server are tripping over themselves to give him their time and lives and totems and to swear undying oaths of fealty to protect him at all costs. grian, martyn, tango, literally every one of the ties - not to mention everyone who stood around and watched as skizz killed tango - all are working together and giving up things, valuable things, to make sure this one player gets to keep time on the server, and therefore time on the series, just because that's who they are. that's what the server is. friends, playing together.
i'm sure that's also why grain stuck with scar in the first series: to make it fair. they want everyone to have a good time. To be able to do their own thing, whatever that thing is you bring to the server, be it your insane PVP skills or trying to scam players by selling them magic crystals.
which is a long way of saying: scar was under no obligation whatsoever to get good at these player-skill-based elements of minecraft. but it's wonderful that he did! he really said, "look, i know you all think i'm a walking disaster, but i need you to know, it's not because i'm bad at the game. it's because i'm me." and then he went and got crazy good at archery (well, okay, crazy good at one very specific archery move, but also pretty damn good at shooting things overall! and at flying!) and he started parkouring around a bunch and now he's mastered waterbucket clutches (and what a fucking display he got to show off in double life, too) and just all around Got Good at the things that he wasn't previously that good at.
and the best thing was that he's still such an irreverent force of chaos that it hasn't even mattered. he's still just as lethal to himself through his own terrible decisions and random lack of awareness or foresight. or even just his own desire to fun, no matter what. the man really went into a hardcore server and said alright, i'm gonna build my base up high enough to definitely kill me, and also make it out of trap doors, and oh grians here, oops i'm sure that won't go wrong. and then he went and died to his elytra failing. that's just the most scar thing I've ever seen. you can't even fault him because grain also died on that server. only joel properly made 100 hours and there's no surprises there, joel is insanely good. so its no mark against scar that he died. but how he plays it, it's just so him.
and you wouldn't have it any other way because this is why we watch him. he's entertaining because he's totally unpredictable and also predictable and good and bad and competent and incompetent all at the same time. he will waterbucket-clutch INTO an impossible situation to save a bunch of useless pandas that were almost definitely going to die and he'll get away with it. and then also he will die by setting off a trap he's trying to very obviously lure others into. yes also he fell into a pit of zombies, what of it? it's just scar and his wacky hijinks. will he die? lets find out!
scar really said the only thing holding me back is me, and then proved it.

Btw, I've been working to flesh out characterization and worldbuilding for the Player Culture AU but, due to that technically being a mostly completely seperate AU from Hermitphibia, I'm probably only going to update you where it's relevant as to not flood your inbox with unrelated lore. I've been mostly going through SMP's to see if they have anything lore relevant and seeing where it would apply.
...
So anyway, Pirates SMP Scar is almost explicitly HC8 Scar and also shares the name of his previous sailing ship with New life!Scar's plane and I think The Hermatrix may have done essentially the same thing to the Hermits' memories The Core did to Marcy's memories to ensure they were for the most part versions of themselves that wouldn't catch on to being in a simulations, with the exceptions of Doc and Ren, who were made into versions of themselves that would catch on quick. Yes, this is rather the big assumption to make based just on Scar having continuity, but it's either this or decanonising The Hermatrix.
It also goes to explain some of Season 8's weirdness as a whole and opens the season's lore up to be used again... just not in it's surrounding context. Mumbo is probably a formless shapeshifter with half a soul, but it probably isn't Grian's and he's probably been that way since before joining Hermitcraft. The reason The Hermatrix accounted for Pearl's connection to the moon is because of the subconscious memories she still had but hadn't recalled. Impulse eats rocks because he both is and isn't a dwarf due to existing in like two or three points of his life simultaneously. Pearl's megabyte resembles the human settlement in S9 because, well,
Tl;Dr: either The Hermatrix is explicitly noncannon or it was fucking with the hermits' memories to make them relive moments of their pasts because otherwise I can't see how the entrepreneur who traveled by wagon went on to become a pirate and possibly later an air pilot.
Also Pirate!Scar's pirate hat is in Scar's room in Scarland and Pilot!Scar's head is in Cub's meuseum if I'm remebering correctly, both shown in Sausage's world tour.
(Glad to hear your culture interpretation's going well. Always interested to hear about it in relation to the Hermitphibia AU.)
I like the idea that the Hermatrix fundamentally shifted the Hermits' inherent selves to keep them safe (& that it echoes Marcy in canon/False in the AU), though I imagine its less making them different in personality & more unconsciously nudging them away from certain lines of thought they'd usually have.
The idea that this process embellishes or reinterprets certain traits of each Hermit is fun, too.
I don't know if some of the specific interpretations line up with the way I view things, though, but lets work through them one at a time:
Scar's timeline in my mind happens as released & I don't think too much Hermatrix shifting would be needed, nor would it be non-canon. The Hermits take on personas all the time (RenTheKing, etc.), & Scar of all people is very inclined towards that.
I don't know where the interpretation of Mumbo as a half-soulless shapeshifter comes from (aside from the potato thing, maybe), but I'm not sure if I buy it over, say, the view of him as a vampire. I'd be interested in hearing more, though.
Pearl's connection to the moon in the sim - name aside - stemming from her past lives is something I like. Makes it more than just a symbolic connection, & that'd be especially important in the AU as unless Pearl chose her name (which is plausible), Grian's surname would also be Moon.
Impulse eating rocks coming form his dwarf phase is something I'm going to steer clear of, unless we interpret that the Hermatrix was somehow predicting the future as well, since that was still a season away.

Okay I swear I'm working on the characters I wanted to... I just happened to be researching gems and stumbled upon Orange Spodumene, went 'wait spodumene comes in blue, it would be perfect for Jevin' and made this. Honestly I'm surprised no one had done it yet.
But part of the reason I did him is because I may be working on my own Xisuma and Evil Xisuma designs (I know I used sweetest-honeybee's designs on the second page of my zedaph ones, but I have so many ideas now that require my own designs)
Just so I can make sure it's out there sooner rather than later, I know @chrisrin , the one responsible for the gemcyt brainrot, made the Boatem Gems to probably be the Crystal Gems equivalent, and people are already writing stories for gemcyt linked to the life series since most of the characters done were from there. However, what if Hermit Gems? Are you intrigued by the idea? I have more info below the cut, both on that and also how it connects to a part of Jevin's design.
Okay hear me out, Hermit Gems. A variation for the crystal gems. Instead of just defending Earth, it's a planet system they defend. That way you can have a planet for hermitcraft, a planet for the live series, a planet for a different group, etc etc.
Unlike with Earth, that had the normal warp pads and the homeworld warp, let's have 3 kinds. Normal 'Planetary Warps', Solar System or just 'System Warps', and ofc the 'Homeworld Warps'. The Hermits/Hermit Gems have disabled the Homeworld warps on any planet they were on, but for the most part the planetary and system warps are still functional.
Like, let's imagine there's 10 planets in the system. Each planet would have 10-15 Planetary warps, 1 System warp (to get from one planet to another) and maybe 3-5 of the planets would have homeworld warps. All the Homeworld ones are disabled purposely, and then a few of the system and a number of the planetary warps are disabled just due to wear and tear from over the years similar to what was seen in the show. That way while it's all the same solar system, there are a few planets that would be disconnected from the other planets. So you could have the life players end up stranded on a planet and not know that it technically is protected by the Hermits.
Now, as for the Hermit Gems themselves, I imagine most of the Hermits were part of the Hermit Gems, but the planets are a bit more dangerous than Earth, so former hermits have either been corrupted, shattered, or lost when they were poofed over time. As it stands, Xisuma has become the defacto leader of the HG's, but in the same way that after Rose became Steven, Garnet was seen as the defacto leader, but really there was no true leader.
The Hermits who were in season 1 that are present day Hermits are probably the original Hermit Gems. So that's Xisuma, Joe and Keralis. Technically Bdubs was in season 1, albeit briefly, so we're not counting him. (Though since Pungence was there, could be that he was there as another Nephrite and when Bdubs eventually learns of the HG's and of his uh... former crewmate(?), he might join with them. But I feel like most of the people part of the life series are up in the air.
Of course more gems/hermits ended up joining the HG's over time, whether on purpose or accident. I'm not sure about some of the other life series people, but Cleo having been in hermitcraft since s2 seems like she probably went to a different planet through the system warps, but by the time she wanted to go back, something had damaged the warp to go back to the sort of main planet, so she ended up stuck on what could be the life series planet.
Of the planets, I feel like the system would go along the lines of 9201 dash [XX], 9 bc of hermitcraft s9, and then the 201 due to us being on 1.20.1. And then the letters signify the planet, so the main one would be 9201-HC and the life series could be 9201-TL (for third life or traffic life, pick your poison).
The Hermit Gems are of course mainly on 9201-HC, and instead of their main base being the Gem Temple, they have it called the Mega Base (for obvious reasons). It would still be similar to the Gem Temple with having a door to various rooms that each Hermit would get, but unlike the Gem Temple, it wouldn't stick to the 5 rooms or whatever number, but it would change with the different HG's, mainly through someone like Xisuma or Joe messing with the gem tech inside. (Since the fact that the Gem Temple has it for the present crystal gems means that it was made after Bismuth was poofed and Amethyst has joined. That, or they changed the door. The fact that Bismuth has a gem in the same place Amethyst does means that the Temple Gem itself could have been her instead, but who knows. We don't know enough about the Temple's history)
Finally, the part that involves Jevin's design. Similar to how the CG's all had stars as part of their designs, I feel like the HG's would have x's. We see that Rose had her star far before the others did, and they added their stars around the time Steven was born, likely in honor of Rose, but Bismuth had stars of her own on her apron and 'tattoo' despite not knowing Rose's fate. So I imagine that the HG's, after joining the Hermits, if they got poofed and regeneration, they had the possibility of adding on an x design to show their allegiance to the Hermits. Xisuma was the first to do it, which is part of how he got his nickname instead of just being called his gem name: P[redacted until the design is complete]. Other HG's probably did it as well before Xisuma was seen as the leader, X just added x's first and whoever was in charge at the time liked it as a replacement for their diamond decals.
I'm not sure if I want to say the HG leader before was Generik, mainly because of... recent outlook on him. And I know Rose/PD had a sort of problematic backstory to put it lightly. It could be similar to why he seemed to have made HC in the first place (assumed to be that he was salty about not being invited to MindCrack, so made his own server, and then once he did get onto MindCrack, he didn't return for s2). If we go with that, it could be something along the lines of Generik started their gem rebellion, and the other Hermit Gems assumed it was for their independence and freedom, but then it was revealed that Generik just wanted to do it to upset HW and didn't care about the other stuff, which put a sour note on the whole thing. Whether he decided he was done, or if HW managed to find and capture/shatter him, who knows. Even if he didn't exist, Xisuma's the technical leader now and the symbol of the HG's is an x.
Of course, it's not required. The designs I saw for Cleo and Joe don't have x's (though i feel like that's because Cleo has never been poofed), it's just a 'if you want to have it, go ahead'. Which is part of why Jevin has an X through his hood and what represents the drawstrings of the hood, but then the hoodie pocket is still a diamond. I almost didn't make it an actual pocket, but i didn't know what to do with his arms, so in ze pocket they go.
If anyone wants to draw/tweak his design, the non transparent version is there for color grabbing. I put the transparent parts at 75% opacity. If you can't tell, his gem is at his chest as opposed to Orange Spodumene having it at her belly.
And lastly, part of why I designed him instead of just saying 'hey, someone do that' is bc i'm working on a fic. and while he's not the main focus, I needed more gems for it and he happened to be sitting there and easy to choose a gem for.

Watched Labyrinth last night with @galacticjay1, and my brain worms took over.
So woe, hermitcraft Labyrinth au be upon ye
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gem as Sarah, main character energy unfortunately but someone's gotta do it. she's the type to just end up in situations. that way the baby Toby can be her puppy Winnie. [alt option would have been Scott, cause Scott's got the vibe to just be in places, but he could not be bothered to actually go through the labyrinth]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bdubs as Hoggle, just look at him. the tolken short guy whos forced to help and will complain every step of the way about it, and will completely kissass up to their boss. Also both having a prized possession always kept at their side [the Clock, and the bundle of jewelry]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scar as Jareth the Goblin King, Yea. Who else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Etho as Ludo, just vibes really. Quiet dude willing to help and can just do wild shit for no good reason. [alt option was Doc, cause he's got the tall brute force energy to him as well, by they said it didn't fit. Docs got more of a higher energy to him then what would fit]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rens Sir Didymus, Dog Knight. eccentric mf who screams out soliloquys going on about saving the fair madden they have devoted their time and service to, is that Sir Didymus or Ren? yes. Ok those are the main ones, now onto the other characters met in the labyrinth in approximate order of appearance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xisuma is the worm. look at that mf and tell me I am wrong, one of the lines is this dude asking Sarah to come in for a cup of tea. Id apologize to the Xisuma enjoyers, but this is tumbler and people know he's a bit of a wet paper bag kinda guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Impulse and Skizz are the door Guards, The guards have no idea what's going on and neither do those two. I know its Technically the "Four Guards" and It could be team Zits, but the vibe isn't there fully. the type of mfs to mislead someone by pure accident[Skizz], and also cause its a lil funny[Impulse]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Martin as the False Alarms, their entire roll is to dramatically shout false warnings at the people who pass. If I didn't make the man who abuses the voice effects on his GoXLR as the rocks who wait to shout at people, I'd be making a mistake. [listener ass bitch] Also there is straight up a line where one of them goes "oh please, we don't get to shout these very often, its only our job" in some posh voice, then go back to the deep dramatic shouting. and that's just Martin man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grian and Mumbo as the Door Knockers, vibes [its also funny to make everyone's favorite guys as characters only seen for five minuets at most] If any two guys are going to be subjected to living their life forever constantly shouting at each other barely being able to understand what the other is saying, it'd be those two. Grian would be the Left, would also scream if he couldn't hear someone [Watcher allegations also] Mumbo as right because the ring in his mouth could be drawn as his mustache
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tango's a Firey, look at him. Cartoon ass bitch, the entire scuffed greenscreen dance sequence is on par with his thumbnails. I know there are supposed to be five of the dudes, but shhhh Zedaph would also fit with these fuckers. the type of guy who could probably detach his head, but still knows that there are manners and its rude to throw someone else's head
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pearl as the Junk Lady, she's the cleaning lady and collects trash, was it ever a question? And Pearls gremlin voice is the exact same as the Junk lady's voice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doc's the lil fairies at the beginning of the labyrinth, everyone say thank you to Doccy for butterfly truthing Doc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jellie as just all the goblins, Scar the Jellie king instead of the Goblin king. The threat of Winnie getting turned into a cat is kinda funny, also there's the Humongous? that's a Jellie panda
the only main characters Im missing is the Wise Man and the Hat, I just do not know who to put them as, maybe Xb and Keralis cause of vibe? or Xb and Hypno cause of the horsehead farms bit. I do not know.
All that will come from this is me maybe drawing Ren and Scar as the characters, feel free to do what you want with this, my brain just needed to scream about this really

Hai i want to listen to you talk about gem again. Any thoughts on empires s1 gem ? (If u already told me then tell me again plz n thank u <3 )
confession time, the s1 e!gem that is always brainrotting is pretty different from canon s1 e!gem (from what i can remember) so i'm going to talk about my pantheon au version of gem
i like to think gem would say, "it's free to be a hater" after sausage or fwhip does some stupid shit. on a more serious note, i feel there has to be some genuine resentment towards them two for dragging her into their bs, even if it's not a lot it is there. gem killing sausage in that one important lore bit was so cathartic to her
gem really admires katherine mainly because of how non involved she is with everything. she always feels the need to help everyone (see my gem character analysis post), and the fact that katherine just steps back is enviable to her
in my head, gem also uses a lot more fire magic than she does in the series; this contracts nicely with katherine's nature magic. gandalf, her cat, will decide if they like a person or not, and that will be gem's first impression of a person. it's quite hard to break from it too
now i'm going to dip in to some hc s8 territory, but it will come back to esmp s1. at the start of the series, gem has no clue she is bi and false is actually her gay awakening. gem looks up to her a lot, and she watches her run away and leave her friends behind. this leads to her reaction during the rapture (season ending), where she only takes fwhip because he directly asked, instead of helping out everybody. like come on, they both fly away on their base defining organic
fwhip and gem were royalty, but because gender roles, their parents were forcing gem to be king (trans roseblings tust), gem felt like her only option was to run away. when she finds out about the crown made by fwhip, she is a little uncomfortable with the concept but doesn't say anything. though when others try to convince her she should get it gem is beyond pissed
before she ran away, pearl showed her all about rifts (it has something to do with amethyst shards, but that's a whole different post) and offers to take her to hermitcraft, which she refuses. until she wants to run away and then goes to the place she wants to set up her village and then goes to another world while everyone is searching for her
gem's relationship with shrub is very unique because she so wants to just yell at them for bringing xornoth to the overworld and then spreading it across her place. on the other hand, she sees herself in them as someone who also ran away from home. but then that gets ruined when she is infected with xornoth via shrub
when she still lived with her family, pearl and sausage lived in neighboring empires, and they all grew up together. gem and sausage dated a bit when they were really young, so they are exs on technicality. most of her romantic feelings have gone away, but whenever sausage firts with her, a crush appears for a day and then goes away. she hates this more than anything else. then they grow up, and gem realizes she likes women and then realize she likes pearl specifically. and then pearl and sausage get together (actually qpr, but gem doesn't know that), and she swears off of romance
and the connection to the void and the end and all that stuff is a pretty important part of this au but ehhhh y'know

We've got a few things to unpack…
It's becoming more and more clear that Empires Season 2 is winding down. People are finalising builds (and, in Pix's case with that massive castle, practically speedrunning builds), and I'm beginning to see things that are tying together little threads that have been teased throughout the season.
Now, I've not had time to keep up with everyone's episodes of late, as I've been so busy, so mainly I've been watching Pix and Sausage. And Sausage's episode today had some very interesting stuff in it, so let's unpack and analyse some of it. Any bolding is mine, to denote things to pay attention to.
This will be long, so behind the cut with you!
First up, something seemingly small: the tattoos that both he and Scott have. Scott's are, as to be expected, colourful. Sausage's are a mixture of his 'good self' and his 'bad self' now merged back into one after being split asunder in Season 1:
Sausage: "And yes, I do have tattoos; I've had them for a very long time. The only thing, though: they have changed a little bit. [I] pretty much just had a sunflower tattoo, and I've had that for a very long time, but ever since that merger happened [it] looks like my other self had this… almost like a withering vine kind of tattoo. but it looks pretty cool, though! It's a perfect mixture, actually. Huh, look at that. These are pretty special."
He then goes to meet Scott, and it turns out that their tattoos almost match when put together, forming the shape of a heart:
Tumblr media
Also of note: when Sausage and Scott go to Tumble Town for their 'beach relaxation' they find a cod statue in the river. And we all know already that the Mezalean King came back briefly to build something in Tumble Town.
Next, the new castle in Sanctuary. It's a blend of several things:
Sausage: "This is a pretty special castle. If you really notice, it's really not like a traditional castle, and now that I'm whole again, it has technically a mixture of both my selves. A little bit of the bad side in the base [points to deepslate foundations] going up to the good side on the top [pointing at wood and colour and foliage]… the base is a little reminiscent of a previous Kingdom, if you noticed. Also mixing in the styles here of Sanctuary with this wood bit; nice brick roofs here on the side towers. And then the top bit; I took some inspiration from our sun god right here: Bdoubleo100. Almost like a little Oriental flair there to the top."
It's also called The Castle of Memories.
I'm going to skip ahead a bit here, as there was something else he mentioned when examining the build:
Sausage: "Of course, we've got window pop-outs everywhere, overgrown going all the way to the top […] We've got the lovely planters over here with live coral and a nice overgrown feel around the side."
Note that he says "overgrown going all the way to the top" and not "overgrowth". And live coral? Hello, Ocean Empire?
So, we now have Mezalea, the Cod Empire, Mythland, the Ocean Empire, and - possibly - House Blossom (the Overgrown) in Season 2.
Now back to the initial reveal of the castle:
Sausage: "And, as we come on down, I think it's a really cool mix of everything we've done here so far. Also including some bits of what we haven't seen yet…"
Tumblr media
Hello? Sir, HELLO? Copper? And aged copper, at that? In addition, it's something that "we haven't seen yet"?
I first watched this episode on my phone, and freaked out when I saw the copper. Watching it again on my monitor, I can now see that the copper is a wheel, much like the one in Bdub's base on Hermitcraft. But, since I doubt that anything more will come from the crossover on the Hermit's side of things I'm not sure whether the shape of the copper has significance, or if it's only the copper itself that has meaning.
Which leads us to Pix. The man is frantically completing an incredible castle ruin at the Ancient Capital, and - if you've been watching his streams - you'll know what the Ancient Capital actually was in its past. If you haven't been watching, you can read my transcription of the important sections here.
Warning for spoilers ahead, as Pix hasn't revealed this yet in his episodes…
… … … …
SPOILERS - LAST CHANCE TO STOP READING!
… … … …
OK, so the Ancient Capital was built by some of the different empires' survivors of the great Grimlands blast that ended Season 1, coming together to create a new "capital of commerce and technology" (to quote Pix). Parts of the castle are being built in Grimlands style, and Pix had begun another part that he says will probably be built in Crystal Cliffs style.
Remember when he said [paraphrased, as I don't have the exact quote to hand right now] "As to how ancient Pixandrian technology found its way here… trust the Lore Man,"? In that transcribed stream he also confirmed that Pixandrian migrants brought the technology for their copper aging facility to the Ancient Capital, which is why it's more advanced than the one he had in Season 1.
So we now also have Grimlands, Crystal Cliffs, and Pixandria in Season 2. Gilded Helianthia is also a given, with the Ancient Capital statue and paintings, and all the references to Santa Pearla. The Lost Empire is also kind of referenced, in the form of Gaia, Sausage's mount for Season 2, as well as in Lizzie's origin story.
ETA: Reblog tags have reminded me that we also have the Undergrove, which has been referenced back to in Shelby's videos.
Pix himself is now a ghost, having withered away when wearing the crown (more mentions of withering, hailing back to Pearl's death in S1, the flowers in front of Pearl's painting that hides the route down to the Kings' Crypt in the Ancient Capital having also turned into wither roses, and - of course - Sausage's "bad side" withering tattoos).
Pix's own words about being a ghost:
Pix: "Maybe the archaeologist of the Ancient Capital and the creator/curator of the museum was… a piece of the past himself all along. Either way, I still have a lot to do."
Like... maybe - as the server's unofficial DM - saving the world or 'ending the game', as he was unable to do in Season 1? Because there's still the matter of the king who has been pursuing Sausage, and who - at the end of his latest episode - has finally found where Sausage has been hiding...
The only Season 1 empire that we're now missing a reference to is Rivendell. And I'm wondering if that's where the Fae come in.
People… Season 2 is being tied together beautifully with Season 1, and I'm fucking HERE FOR IT.
(Also, as a side-note on a personal level: I spent this morning frantically scribbling notes for how the eventual ending of my story These Stones Remember will take place. Those notes really ramp up the time-crossing between archaologist!Pix and CopperKing!Paix, and I am going slightly crazy (/pos) at the thought that my favourite content creators appear to be blending past and future in a similar way that I am!)

so,, lemme get some things straight here. (as straight as it can be when its me)
HydroHydrei's Mafia game 2: electric boogaloo
(based on the traffic light smp, specifically set in the ruins of 3rd Life. Most of the players got there through The Rift that would've initiated the Hermitcraft/Empires crossover)
(all characters mentioned in this post were roleplayed by a group if sillies in a discord server [/pos] not their actual content creator.)
Night 1:
Three people died. Sausage. Jimmy. Scott. Jimmy and Scott were a two for one kill since they were soulmate linked. Sausage was a player kill. Doomed to fall. Jimmy was a nature kill. Struck by lightning. Scott died of heartbreak. Three Town.
Day 2:
Ren, the red king, gets slain by none other than GeminiTay (of empires). Mafia.
Night 2:
Two people died. Etho, Martyn. Etho was a nature kill. Stalactite. Martyn was a player kill. Didnt want to live in the same world as. Both Town.
Day 3:
Joel, a Hand, was killed in a rebuilt version of Dare to Flare, the game that took his first ever life on 3rd Life. The 'game' that takes his life in its ruins. Mafia.
Night 3:
One person died. Scar. Walked into cactus while fighting... Player kill. Town.
Day 4:
Cleo was slain by Pearl with huge parallels to Double Life. Pearl in red. Woman In Total Control of Herself. Etc. Town.
Night 4:
Two deaths. Impulse, Bdubs. Impulse died to nature. Burnt to death. Bdubs was a player kill. Killed trying to hurt. Impulse: Neutral. Bdubs: Town.
The Red King Revived from the dead.
Day 5:
Majority voted for none.
Night 5:
insanity. absolute chaos.
two deaths. BigB. Gem.
BigB died to Gem. Gem died by player kill. Slain by using [💀💀💀 Red Winter Is Coming 💀💀💀]. Gem is revealed to have done all the nature kills.
BigB: Hand. Gem: Neutral.
But wait there's more.
With Gem being dead, Impulse could no longer win. He needed to kill his killer in order to win. He lost. He got invited to become one of the watchers. Impulse accepted.
More still.
Gem could also no longer win. She was also offered a place with the watchers. She refused. She got into a fight with all the other ghosts (or so i hear).
and so:
TECHNICALLY
The number of kills Gem got BY HERSELF before she died (Jimmy, Scott, Etho, Impulse, BigB) (ren doesnt count because he was flavor text) was more than the number of people who died to the Hands (Sausage, Martyn, Scar, Bdubs). (Cleo doesnt count coz that was a town vote out.)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 55: Family Tree Part 2 (with Part 1)
Part 1 was posted along with another post, so it could have been missed, hence why it is here. More parts will come, but that's when it gets complicated (as all the Hermits count as family). Rambling More info below!
(And reminder I made a discord to talk about the bots)
Remember this is about the characters and not the actual people since, y'know, the bots aren't really real (no matter how much that would be nice). But some of the actual people are on tumblr, and if there is some design element that makes them uncomfortable, please do say something!
I couldn't fit as many words as I would like, and some details got a little lost summarizing, so here's some of that extra context.
I know one common fact that's gone around is that Mumbo joined season 2 when he was still 17 or so. Character wise, Mumbo's bio family is out of the picture and joining as a minor of sorts needed some parental or guardian permission, so Xisuma essentially legally adopted Mumbo to make it easier.
Evil Xisuma would technically be a Great Uncle, but he insists on just being referred to as an Uncle, at least by Tegg. [Insert: I've only had [character] for 5 minutes meme].
I made Pearl's eyes pearlescent! And gave little star freckles! But otherwise Grian and Pearl being siblings is more found family than actually being related, but they call each other siblings.
Speaking of... Jimmy! Grian's lovingly bullying of Jimmy has major sibling vibes. I like to jokingly say they're soulmates, but not in the 'oh we are meant to be together, the universe says so' but more 'No matter what the situation is, even if technically the two shouldn't know each other, they do, and it's to annoy one another.' Soulsiblings if you will. Just, look at the entire interaction when the Hermits went to Empires and Grian found Jimmy.
NPG!!! He cameoed in the previous art piece. A pre-hermitcraft classic! He's in hels now with Evil Xisuma and the hels hermits. Grum isn't 100% sure if NPG and EX are friends, or if it's a low key hostage situation. In which case EX would be the hostage. NPG is sort of violently friendly.
Finally Grumbot Prime and Emperor Grumbot. Grumbot Prime is of course the alternate universe Grumbot that came from the rift. Grum worries about the fact that he wasn't successful getting Mumbo to be mayor while this alternate did. Meanwhile Emperor Grumbot wasn't exploded. Well he was, but got better and now just lives in Empires. (I mean this whole thing is sort of an au since Grum and Jrum aren't in s9, and tegg never hatched, etc etc, so empires is a lil changed as well.) Oh also Jrum doesn't just 'want' the crown, he just tries stealing it when he can. It is shiny. He want. Gib.

nothing bad ever happens to tcd!mumbo (lie)
Hello miners and crafters welcome back to another episode of I Cannot Stop Thinking About TCD and I now blame @stiffyck for this because of their incredible askers (@buzzybeeboi thank you but also i blame you too, thank you for starting this au i’m very normal (lie) about it /pos) for making a very beloved au where Mumbo has been thrown into TCD and gets to witness Scar’s past before joining hermitcraft (there is more to the rambles than just this, and the incredible @5ievel-w-c-q is the very person - blame them for the dialogue used as he started it <3 /lh)
It’s ironic, really, that the one that's technically already undead is the one that gets bitten. It couldn’t be any more ironic.
The scene still replays in Scar’s head: the world going slow and yet moving faster than he could ever run. Teeth sinking into skin, the thought of I’m too late ripping his hopes and dreams apart, his brother in everything but blood showing him that love still existed in this god forsaken world being the one that’s taken.
Mumbo calls his name, he tries not to think about how he told him it.
‘Scar. I forgot my name, so I just named myself after my favourite gun.’
He’s starting to hate the weapon, hands trembling as he aims it at the floor and attempts to remember how to turn the safety on after so, so long.
Mumbo’s hold on the gun doesn’t go unnoticed; he could take it from Scar’s trembling hands and shoot him with it. Scar would let him.
“No!” His voice betrays him, weak and broken and everything he told himself he wouldn’t be in the beginning. “You’ll be fine, you’re-” In the beginning you learn not to make promises, you learn to give up on the little things, because nothing good survives here; it’s why he’s still living. “We don’t know Mumbo, you could be fine. You’re not human! Maybe you’re immune!”
He hasn’t felt so childish in so long, hasn’t tried to be naive like this in a long, long time.
Mumbo hasn’t let go of the gun, he doesn’t stop staring him down like this is a contest.
Scar would live through breaking his leg over a hundred times if it meant he’d never have to live this moment.
“Please. Scar, we know what happens.” They both do, Scar taught Mumbo about it just like Mumbo taught him about vampires. “I don’t want to hurt you.” The recent scar marking his face stings.
You didn’t mean it, he thinks, clenching his jaw and trying to stop the way his chest feels tight, you were protecting me and I didn’t stay out of the way.
“You can’t just leave me.” Scar begs, foolish and young and yet never regretting letting another person into his life. It was all going so well- it’s not fair. “I’m not going to- I won’t. We said we’d get out of here. Together.” I will let you kill me if it means I do not have to, I will drop this weapon and I will finally give up. If it means I don’t have to be alone, I will give up.
He is tired of loneliness, is tired of this world and the struggle to live in it; and when he was, Mumbo offered comfort. He cannot lose it.
His hands keep shaking, Mumbo doesn’t let go of the gun.
“I’m sorry.” Mumbo says, and it says everything it needs to and nothing at all, and Scar wonders, choking on his own sobs, if this is what heartbreak feels like.
Mumbo guides the weapon back towards himself, it’s steadier with his brother’s hand holding the barrel of the gun on top of Scar’s own that’s not at the handle of it. Mumbo’s hand is warm, but it’s cold in a way; comforting. Even through the choked tears, held back with bitten lips and heaving breaths, the sound of the safety clicking off echoes like it’s in a theatre.
Normally, Scar aims at the head. This time he can’t, because he knows that wouldn’t help his brother. That would not give him peace. With a heaving breath and a barely held back whimper, he aims the gun at his brother’s heart; he is glad Mumbo is holding it with him, because the tears in his eyes blur his vision.
Mumbo takes a breath that sounds as shaky as Scar feels, and he tries not to think about final breaths. Mumbo closes his eyes, and finally, Scar lets the barely-there facade fall. Mumbo is trusting him to do this; is asking him to so they don’t have to find out if vampires can die any further the hard way.
When you love someone, sometimes you have to let them go, and Scar wonders if pretending to hate his brother will let him feel nothing again.
He can’t bring himself to look, trusting that Mumbo will help keep him steady one last time as he shuts his eyes and pulls the trigger.

the first time ren and martyn talk, it goes something like this.
one of the hermits that martyn doesn't know stumbles into pearl's attic (others probably consider this "where martyn lives", but martyn can only think of it as pearl's) in the dead of night. he has a shulker box and sign in hand. martyn should be asleep, but isn't. (he doesn't sleep well). instead, he just sits up in bed and meets the guy's eyes.
the guy's expression looks distinctly like a prey animal's. martyn can only assume his own expression mirrors this. "um. hello," martyn says, voice low. a habit he's not fond of, but hasn't quite broken yet.
"heya, the name's ren!" the guy -- ren says. from his initial reaction he clearly hadn't been prepared for an actual conversation, but martyn probably wouldn't be able to tell from the confidence in his voice.
"martyn. that guy they found in the ancient city outside the world border. you've probably heard of me."
"maybe a few rumors! you're grian and pearl's friend from another world, right?" mostly pearl, only, really. grian either sent or left him to die, so...
"um, something like that. why are you here?"
ren falters for a moment, a split second of barely visible why am i here? before he continues on with that same sureness from before. "well, rumors have it you got invited to stay, and, i haven't actually heard if you're going to--"
"that'd be 'cause i haven't said so either way," martyn interjects. that would be because martyn's pretty sure that he'll politely decline, and he's procrastinating upsetting pearl until the last possible second. not that ren needs to know this. for some reason, ren seems like he might also be disappointed, and for some other reason, martyn's not sure he wants to disappoint him.
"but, i figure, wanted to give you an official hermitcraft welcome in case you end up deciding to! just some things to help you get started, 'cause you probably don't have much by way of your own." ren beams. oh, yeah, he'd for sure be disappointed.
"riiight. which is, of course, why you've broken into... my? pearl's? attic at... uh, who knows when at night."
ren shakes the communicator on his wrist, which activates in a flash of light. "nearly three, so, who knows when in the morning!"
"is this some kind of hazing thing? it's a really mild hazing thing if it is."
"no, not at all! i just came in now 'cause, i mean, y'know, subtlety is key with this sort of situation!" ren has, presumably, never met the concept of subtlety in his life.
"right. uh. carry on?"
* * *
maybe an hour later, after another failed attempt to get something resembling peaceful sleep, martyn gives up, gets out of bed, and inspects the shulker box ren left behind for him.
"just some things to help you get started, 'cause you probably don't have much by way of your own."
martyn does technically have some things. they're concentrated in one chest in one of his "safe zones" in the city: a jukebox, several music discs, including one he'd crafted from fragments of a disc himself, a diamond hoe with what he can only assume to be mending glyphs on the handle, ancient seeds (somehow still plant-able) from the last residents, a few handfuls of luminescent berries (bitter and sour, seems like something that should be poisonous but isn't), and... well, at one point, he'd had a little bit of iron armor which had thoroughly broken after the warden got its claws on him. it's probably better, though, for him to not have to go back down there and get that stuff. ren's done him a bigger favor than he probably even realizes.
martyn opens the shulker and nearly passes out. it just can't possibly be the right shulker. ren's accidentally left his own backup gear behind or something. martyn doesn't really know what'd be considered a reasonable amount of gifts for a late-to-join member on this world, but it can't be this.
a full set of diamond armor, plus elytra, plus the whole lineup of diamond tools, (including not one, but two diamond pickaxes), all fully enchanted. well-enchanted, too, as far as martyn can tell. a ridiculous and excessive number of pumpkin pies. a ridiculous and excessive number of firework rockets. there are also several dark metal ingots, which martyn ultimately can't identify and sets aside.
there's a map, too, underneath the ingots. martyn's forced to genuinely consider that this may have been an intended act of ridiculous generosity. it's annotated, structures and areas labeled with their owners, names on it ranging from the completely familiar (grian and pearl) to vaguely recognizable (xisuma, ren) to a vast number of ones he's not even heard referenced.
this is the first time martyn actually considers the thought of staying after he recovers more. before, he'd figured that it would really only be pearl that would actually want him here, and the countless other members on the world would just be waiting for things to get back to normal, just holding out for a good opportunity to forget about everything. but ren's seemingly already dove headfirst into "a friend of my friend is also my friend" territory with martyn. it proves to him that maybe, just maybe, it might be worth it to take xisuma's offer to stay.
it might be the world that evolution should have been.

Try #2 wording the Hunger AU questions I want to ask, let's see if this one also ends up with me giving up and giving tidbits instead. XD
The quick, TL;DR version: I'm curious about the characters' backstories before fic's canon/Hermitcraft canon.
The very long version: MCYT fandom is in this weird ambiguous area where you *technically* have access to a lot of info from the content creators' IRL lives and their past SMPs/Let's Plays/etc, but how much of that factors into any one fic's canon changes depending on the author. Each author has different levels of how much "canon" (SMPs, Let's Plays, etc) they've had time to watch, how familiar they are with IRL stuff, how comfortable they are incorporating IRL stuff into their fic, whether everyone is a basic player or whether you have players who are avians or vexes etc., or a variety of other things. Each fanfic author has their own version of canon, and none of them are really wrong, because canon itself is kind of fluid.
Originally, I started asking a bunch of little questions (Are Scott and Jimmy exes? Does Grian still have a biology degree, or something like it? Is Scar still afraid of snakes (and if so, does that fear of snakes also mean a fear of worms)? How close were Grian and Mumbo pre-Hermitcraft (because fanfic and IRL episodes seem to often have different opinions on that)? Does Pearl still turn things upside down if they're in a virtual world where Australia presumably doesn't exist?) However, as I was looking at these questions, I realized it wasn't so much that I wanted like concrete answers to each one, so much as like ... I wanted more of an idea about the characters backstories. Right now, we're very much in Grian's head, and he's not exactly in a good enough headspace to be thinking that much about his own pre-Watcher past, much less anyone else's past. I assume it will be awhile until the fic gets into a place where we can find out some of this info without it feeling awkwardly jammed in, so I just kind of want a better idea of where each character (or at least, Grian + Grian Retrieval Squad) is coming from.
Like, you mentioned all Hermits except for Joe and TFC were spawned, not born, but as examples to show what I mean: how old were Grian & co when they spawned? Did they spawn in a single player world (which I think is implied from how you said single player worlds are formed around players, correct me if I'm wrong) or a multiplayer world? Did they have anything like caregivers/guardians/non-blood-related family when they were younger? What was their first multiplayer experience like, and how'd they find Hermitcraft? What education did they have? What led them to becoming redstoners (Tango and Mumbo), builders (Grian, Scar, and Pearl), or admin (Xisuma)? How did Grian meet Mumbo and/or Pearl? (Reminder, these are just examples of the type of info I'm curious about, not looking for each one to be answered specifically.)
So yeah, basically, not really any specific questions so much as "character backstory info please? *puppy dog eyes*"
OHHH MAN i will fully admit i havent done a ton of research into cc histories and previous smps etc etc-- i know some stuff thru fandom osmosis, but i dont know a lot of details (hence why i find your tidbits really neat!!!!!) and so unfortunately i dont have,,, the most detailed or even semi-detailed answers for this rn 😭😭😭😭😭
I can however offer that i do tend to sorta cherrypick and meld some irl cc stuff with the characters sometimes as almost easter eggs??? So like with the Mumbo and Grian stuff, i'd want to sorta glance at the dates on those irl eps vs the dates of the Evo eps and base backstory stuff of that!!! Basically in short, i'd need to actually do a bit more research and figure out how i want to incorporate things before fully committing to anything just yet!!! Im sorry i dont have a better answer for you 😭😭😭💀💀💀💀

TELL ME ABT HIS DEATH RN I WANNA HEAR IT 🤖
OK :) Here's a snippet from a fic I may never finish.
Context: Original!Grian is taken and killed by the Watchers at the end of Evo, and is replaced with a new, imperfect clone of himself created from his memories. Later in season 9 of Hermitcraft, Watcher!Grian sees how upset his friends are that Original!Grian is dead, so he uses his powers to go back in time and stop Original!Grians death (technically killing himself in the process, and causing a paradox but don't worry about it). This is the moment that Original!Grian wakes up alive in season 9.
Also this is not well written because I haven't picked it up in a good while...
The first thing he thought: he was alive. Alive and breathing, alive and sitting up, alive and heart beating. The second thing he thought: pain.
Which isn’t really a thought, but it had been a while. Give him a break. Grian felt himself grimace, nausea bubbling in his gut. It hurt, burnt inside him like stomach acid melting the walls of his flesh, every movement of his shifting body tangible and real. Too real. Too alive.
He had been dead, for some time. The idea lingered, sticking to him, and moving away slow and viscous, something refusing to click in the back of his mind. How had he been dead?
He remembered dying. Remembered the pain of it, his code unravelled from his existence while his body stayed alive. Every sense of his being crushed and manipulated by Them, heart steady and mind aware of the person They were taking out of him, removing line after line of his life until he became a hollow shell. As if it were his veins being pulled out, his skin had burnt. Burnt until it felt like his ribs had caved in and cracked him in two.
He could remember the lights he saw. The colours dancing above him in the infinite void, swirling patterns of impossible heights draining into grey as his sight faded. It was beautiful. It was terrible.
When They finally came to rip his body apart, he'd already forgotten who he was. He only functioned to be alive, not to live, with no essence of code left inside him to make him feel. And he blankly witnessed Them clawing up the flesh of his stomach and through his chest, wings twitching in his back. Watched as They tore the pieces of himself from him and stuffed them into something else. Something new and alive and him, but not him. Then finally he felt Them puncture through the meat of his heart, and the world went away.
Dying… was final. Like that, he had no way of coming back, no way of getting to his code again and no way of rebuilding his body. He was nothing, thought nothing, existed nowhere, forever. Or that seemed like the most logical conclusion.
But then, if he had died, why was he alive? Grian shifted where he was sat, soft sheets moulding to his movements. A bed. He didn’t recognise it. Not from Evo, at least.
He took in his surroundings. A room of moss and stone, natural but clearly built with intention. Smelt like dust and something sweet. The bed sat haphazardly on some planks, undecorated. Makeshift.
A pain in his skull broke his curious looking. Was his brain trying to get out? He groaned, the sensation still foreign and strangely manual. Everything jostled inside him again. Every part of him feeling. Every part screaming for relief.
And a movement at the door. Door? Yes, there was a door there, over in the curved wall on the other side of the room. Through its little window, someone. Someone, or something. Perhaps it was Them, come to take him away and make him dead again. Okay, he could deal with that. He didn’t want to be in this pain anymore. Which was a little pathetic of him, really, because it had been about five minutes.
But alive hurt. It hurt with every shift of his muscles and squish of the organs inside him pushing against each other. He wanted it gone. And still, the fear of seeing Them again had his heart thudding harder in his chest, pushing hard against ribs with each shuddering beat.
Did living really hurt so much? He didn’t remember it hurting. He remembered normalcy, and then death. Which hurt. But alive, that didn’t hurt, or it shouldn’t. There shouldn’t have been hurt.
The door opened, and a woman rushed in, eyes wide and shiny. He wondered, in brief, what his own eyes looked like.
“Griba?”
