Notebook Review: Rhodia Greenbook
As a lover of things analog, I do sometimes wonder about my carbon footprint with all my notebooks and scratch paper. While I love jotting down notes more in pen and paper than digital, I do wonder what the real cost of that habit is? So when I was perusing new products at JetPens, I was interested in the Rhodia Greenbook Notebook (A5, $13.00) Now let me get a few biases/preconceived notions out…

Small Hobonichi Update
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things are not boding well for this book's durability, considering I've only been taking it out of the house for two days. For something so expensive, it really does not hold up well at all. Guess that's why they sell covers: to make more money to protect the books

I saw Lisa Frankenstein a week early ‘cause of cinemark’s secret movie series and I am obsessed. I saw it again two days ago, it’s so good!!
Tumblr media
I was trying to make a Lisa Frankenstein piece for my next art project for school but couldn’t come up with a composition I really liked. I still really wanna make a comic cover for them so I’ll keep trying.

I had a fun three-day weekend.
As I briefly mentioned earlier, I went to Chicago. Thursday I stopped halfway and spent the night at a bed & breakfast in Baraboo, WI.
Baraboo is where the Ringling Brothers started their circus of the same name in 1884. The B&B I stayed it the former home of one of the brothers.

More after the cut.
I like the shared areas at B&Bs. There were only three other people there Thursday night. I didn't really get to mingle as they kept to themselves.
That typewriter would have been fun to use for my blog post. Sadly, it lacked wi-fi and Bluetooth connections. There was an old, hand-cranked phonograph in the next room that was fully functional.
Tumblr media
Downtown Baraboo has plenty of bars (because it's Wisconsin). There were a number of restaurants and cafes too. The two-story brick buildings I like in small towns were plentiful. I logged a lot of steps walking up and down the streets, peering into windows. This is another town where I think it would have been fun to stay a week and try more bars and restaurants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two breweries in Baraboo. Of course I visited both.
The first, I was told, has better food. Tumbled Rock is where I went for dinner and flight of beers. My burger and fries were most satisfying. The beer selection was impressive. Each of the five I sampled I would definitely buy again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I finished dinner I drove three miles back to my B&B and parked the car. Then I walked to the other brewery, the Al. Ringling Brewing Co.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside was neat. The coolers behind the bar, filled with cans of beer, had wooden doors, mechanical handles, and glass panels. The bartender told me it was a functional refrigerator.
This place was also a former home of a Ringling brother. But it was a mansion. There used to be a bowling alley in the basement for the family. The bar top is made from old sections of the bowling alley floor.
One of the brews on tap was Cherry Pie Fruit Sour with Swedish Fish. The nice, young bartender told me the brewers add a bag of the candy fish to the mix while making the sour.
I said I hope a serving of it comes with a Swedish Fish candy garnish. She grinned and promptly brought me a glass of it with the a Swedish Fish garnish!
The mention of fish made me want to suggest a Pizza Flavored Goldfish Beer, or at least free bowls of my favorite little crackers in lieu of pretzels, but the bartender had other customers to tend to. I missed that opportunity to pitch my idea. Maybe I should write a letter?
Tumblr media
During my walk around town I noticed that Baraboo has a bit of a continental divide in its middle. At Oak Street, the numbered roads change from Avenues to Streets, or vice versa, depending on which way you walk. You can be at the intersection of 6th St and 6th Ave, and the two aren't even perpendicular.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning I joined the other B&B guests for a waffle breakfast. This time I socialized with them and the owners of the B&B. We learned about the history of the city and all about the Ringling Bros. and their circus.
Fun time. Afterward I took my time driving to Chicago. I timed it right to miss the worst of rush hour. More about Chicago in a later post.

I read Knockout by @sarahmaclean and had an absolute brilliantly good time with it. Imogen is my favorite character from this series and her book did not disappoint. Plus, look at that gorgeous cover!
Before I post reviews online, I like to gather my thoughts in my commonplace book / journal. I made my own printable to add to my Travelers Notebook insert to collect my thoughts and favorite quotes from books. If people are interested, I’ll add this printable as a free download in my shop.
I also like to note down words I come across that I’d like to use more in my own writing. They aren’t necessarily words I don’t know, just words I don’t use often (although some of these words were new to me).
Anyway, if you enjoy historical romance, I definitely recommend giving this book a try. It is delightful.

Is it just me, or does the tagline they chose for Willard (the 1971) doesn't fit the movie at all (even though they could have easily made it to make more sense by replacing Ben with Socrates). It is a good tagline don't get me wrong, but in the movie, Willard and Ben can barely stand each other, especially later in the movie. When Willard and Ben work together to get revenge for Socrates. That being said, I absolutely love the poster.

Books of 2023: CONVERSATIONS ON WRITING by Ursula K. Le Guin with David Naimon.
Currently dual wielding books, over here--I've never really been big on reading two different fiction books at once, but I can pair fiction with nonfiction just fine.
I haven't read as much nonfiction as I'd hoped to this year (overcorrecting from last year, apparently), so I'm excited to get back into some Writers Writing about Writing stuff while I cool off of my current project before I gear up for NaNo. This one starts with "In Memoriam," though, so I suspect it'll probably break my heart a little bit. This is Fine™.

Notebook Comparison: 120gsm and 180gsm Paper
If you’ve been into stationery for awhile, you start talking about paper in gsm. Most folks learned about gsm from Tomoe River and it’s paper weight is a light, delicate 52gsm and 68gsm respectively. Non-Tomoe River paper weights that are suitable for fountain pens or making art are often 80gsm or 100gsm. I stumbled across two notebooks with paper weights at 120gsm and a whopping 160gsm, I had to…

One Month in the Hobonichi HON
Tumblr media
Another review that nobody asked for but I am going to write anyway because it makes me happy.
Tl;dr: I've really enjoyed using the HON so far!
I had some anxiety before ever even using the book that the A6 would be too small and that I should have gone for the A5 HON or even the Cousin. But I think because my writing is smaller to fit on the small grids and I am using a thin tipped pen (Jetstream 0.5), it makes entries that would have taken more space on a 5mm dot grid A5 paper fit just fine on the 0.37mm grid. I have had a few entries spill onto the next page of the book, but I've not had any entries take up more than a bit of room on the next page nor have I had to tape in a new page to compensate for the amount of excess writing one entry takes up. Honestly, if I had gotten an A5 Hobonichi, I probably would have been lamenting about all of the wasted space I had on each page (though, perhaps I would have room for bigger pictures or more decorative elements than what I use now).
Since I don't use the HON for planning anything, I use the checklist at the top of the page just as a gratitude log for the day, just to write a few moments from the day that made me happy so I can remember that there is indeed good in every day. I don't really use the monthly calendar other than to back-fill appointments or holidays, but I rarely remember to flip to it since I keep that information in an actual planner spread usually. Perhaps I will find a better use for those pages someday, but I don't think I'll be that upset if they go mostly unused. The reason I got the HON was for daily entries, and I have been maintaining that function for it well.
There is a bit of warping along the edges of the used pages that is noticeable when looking at the closed book, plus a little bit of extra bulk from a few pictures being stuck onto some of the pages. But I think that just comes from the journal being used as is its intended purpose. To be loved it so be changed, as they say, and I can't expect the book to stay in perfect, pristine condition forever if I am using it. The bulk of January is not particularly noticeable when the book is held closed, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do want to add more pictures and maybe decorative elements like stickers or washi tape to my entries, but I am a little afraid of adding more bulk to the HON than it is capable of holding. I think I've seen a few folks say that it doesn't hold bulk as well as a Techo Original or Cousin. I might play around with it and put sticky notes or scrap pieces of paper intermittently throughout the book to test it's durability in handling bulk before I make any commitments to sticking more stuff in it. But for now, I am having fun adding a couple of images here and there from my day, whether it be a picture of something I drew, something nice that I got in the mail, a meal I had that day, or the sunrise from that morning. It's nice to have a little visual snapshot of something from that day that made me feel good without even having to read through the entry.
I have also been considering using color-coded "tags" to label the contents of my daily entries since they can vary at times. Sometimes my entries document the severity of symptoms I experienced through the day, summarize the events of my day, or serve as a place for me to empty my head of excess unneeded thoughts that make it hard for me to rest at the end of the day. I think it would be nice to know what entries have what kind of content at a glance, or if there are any entries that overlap in content. I've been trying to find stickers in stores lately, but I may just have to order some online since I have yet to find any that suit my fancy.
I can truly say that I look forward to continuing to use the book through the rest of 2024!

I'm really tired of my coworker asking me for exam study tips bc he clearly means "how do I pass with the least amount of effort possible" and keeps getting frustrated when I explain my note taking strategies and like. actual engage with him about the material. why do you keep asking me if you don't like my answers
