I watched Netflix's Death Note movie and I was genuinely shocked at how heterosexual it was. Absolutely no homoerotic subtext between Light and L. I genuinely believe that's one of the reasons it sucked so bad. L and Light's relationship was not fleshed out enough to ship them.

Light Yagami and L Lawliet are enemies, but theyre so much more. They are obsessed with each other. They are each other's only worthy friend and only worthy adversary.

Netflix Light and L are just enemies.

I wonder if people know that Noteflix director Adam Wingard actually made a couple of pretty funny, pretty decent goofy horror/comedy movies before he made the Death Note flick? The Guest is like if Michael Bay hamfistedly attempted to direct an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and You're Next was another weird sort of silly action movie/thriller/horror thingy that also made me laugh. I still think Noteflix was a terribly handled adaptation that deserved the criticism it got, but it was just a surprising thing for me to discover that I actually had fun watching some of his other stuff....

#i watched like 200 movies last year and believe it or not his movies stood out as some of the more entertaining ones of the year #he def shouldnt have assumed being deliberately tone deaf or wtv was the best way to go about adapting an anime #but i think i realized that with other material he actually isnt always as incompetent a director as noteflix made me assume #i think he kind of doesnt take himself or what hes making all that seriously #and that didnt work out well in this case #imo he would have been much better suited to directing a beyond birthday flick #noteflix #p

finding out that Obha and Obata actually actively support the abomination that is Noteflix and have spoken out against the backlash saying that it was a correct "American" take on death note despite the whitewashing and destroying of character arcs, plot devices, the death note rules, the unnecessary gore that netflix loves to add despite the original anime not having much, L and Light's whole relationship, Ryuk and Light's friendship, Ryuk's passiveness to what Light was doing with the death note, the absence of characters in general, the mix ups of characters' personalities (e.g Mia Sutton (who is commonly thought of to be based off of Misa Amane) is actually based off Light Yagami and his "psychopathic" tendencies confirmed by Adam Wingard) is not as hurtful as finding out Obata did official art of Light Turner and it looks like this

Sort of exploring an older story idea I had using the 2017 version (yeah, yeah, I know Noteflix's trash, but I'm using it anyway) where Light was killed in a hit and run and his mother becomes Kira to avenge him. This is more focused on the investigation drama surrounding it since I imagine her husband wouldn't be happy knowing that she's a suspect anymore than he was in canon when it was his son and would definitely push back against L on this.
