Temperance and Mr. Wyrm WIP intro.
Tumblr media
Title: Temperance and Mr. Wyrm
Genre: Novella; body horror; monster romance; drama; magical realism; historical (late 1980s); fairytale/folklore retelling (loose Prince Lindworm retelling).
Status: First Draft.
Themes: Shedding old skins and old sorrows and old mistakes to become new, better people; not holding back from living life to the fullest we can, however we can; optimism; loving one’s otherness; love and faithfulness.
Warnings: General body horror; illness; snake imagery; general socio-political norms of the 1980s (though I will keep this to a minimum as I feel like I don’t need to stick 100% true to the period. However, given how illness and healing is the core plotline, the whole being “afraid of AIDs” will make a brief appearance).
Synopsis: In a story that is David Cronenberg's The Fly mixed with Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, two people try to navigate their unorthodox romance in spite of an arcane, snake-like infection that affects one of them.
Temperance Cavell lives a quiet, colorless, and demure life running an apothecary with her mother. She tries to keep order in her life by way of numbers and logic, she’s an unexciting social life, and her desire to believe in modern medicine clashes with the traditional folk, superstitious, remedies still utilized by her mother and grandmother. But despite it all, she cannot complain. This life is quiet, she’s (mostly) in control, and nothing is unexpected...
That is until a Snake--Jack Turner, the motorcycle-riding kleptomaniac with a heard of gold--makes his way into her life, and between them a romance blooms, but is swiftly threatened to shatter when Jack’s body begins to betray him, contorting him into something that is completely, and utterly, non-human.
AYOOOOOO finally wrote a WIP intro thingie!!!! Also so sorry, I’m absolutely gARBAGE at writing story summaries hhhnnnhsshsshsnshn 😅 but yeah, TaMW is basically The Fly meets The Shape of Water meets the short story “The Tiger’s Bride” by Angela Carter (and was lowkey inspired by me just wanting to make a snake-man character that looks like Brad Dourif lmao)! The vibes for this story are very much 80s/90s Hallmark meet A24 arthouse horror movie, though!
BUT I’ve been listening to the Shape of Water soundtrack a lot lately, and seeing a lot of Gwendoline Christie (the inspiration for Temperance), so I’ve been super inspired to be writing more of this story!!🥺
For those that may be new, feel free to check out this story’s tag to see the loose and rough concept sketches, writing snippets, etc. that I’ve all posted for this story!!!!

First of all, love is a joint experience between two persons--but the fact that it is a joint experience does not mean that it is a similar experience to the two people involved. There are the lover and the beloved, but these two come from different countries . . . It is for this reason that most of us would rather love than be loved. Almost everyone wants to be the lover. And the curt truth is that, in a deep secret way, the state of being beloved is intolerable to many. The beloved fears and hates the lover, and with the best of reasons. For the lover is forever trying to strip bare his [or her] beloved. The lover craves any possible relation with the beloved, even if this experience can cause him [or her] only pain.

Time for a Shameless Book Promotion
Every fiber in my being is cringing as I write this self-promotional ad, but if I want people to actually notice and possibly read my book, then I'm going to have to acknowledge said book exists.
This Pride month, won't you please read my queer romcom novella? It's got lesbians and luck magic and even a ferret.
