Does James Gunn's Waller Series Confirm That New DCU Is A Soft Reboot Only?
Tumblr media
The internet broke when DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced the new direction for their new DC Universe. While there were a lot of new and exciting projects announced, one, in particular, confuses and raises more questions than answers. Gunn announced the, already previously announced, Waller live-action series. In the announcement, Gunn mentions that Waller will ‘team up’ with ‘team Peacemaker’. Given that Peacemaker was part of the old DC Extended Universe, does this news confirm that the DC Universe soft reboot is happening, instead of what we all expected? Read on to find out just exactly what the Waller series means for this new DCU. Amanda Waller Before The DC Universe Soft Reboot The insanely talented Viola Davis as Amanda Waller was a huge get for the, then, DC Extended Universe. She first appeared in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad in 2016. The actress plays the DC Comics character who is like a shadier and more duplicitous version of what Agent Coulson became for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Gunn came on board WB to do his own kind of reboot of Ayer’s movie with The Suicide Squad in 2022, we all wondered which characters and actors would transition over. Davis’ Waller made it. And later on, Waller was a huge part of the Peacemaker original series by James Gunn, spinning off from The Suicide Squad. Her daughter was even the co-protagonist of the show in many ways. Waller’s last appearance in the old DCEU happened as a post-credit scene of Black Adam, where Henry Cavill’s Superman appeared.  We also now have confirmation that both Cavill’s Superman and The Rock’s Black Adam are no longer being part of the new DCU plans. So— what about this Waller? Gunn’s Waller TV Series Raises So Many Questions In his announcement video, Gunn confirms that Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller. This means that this is same character we’ve seen in the DCEU, most of which is now part of this new DCU. In the same vein, Gunn confirmed that Waller will be teaming up with members of team Peacemaker. A show that we were all wondering if it will be part of the new Universe, given its ties to the old DCEU. Especially that season 1 finale where both Jason Mamoa and Ezra Miller reprised their roles as Aquaman and The Flash, respectively, placing those events and that show squarely in the old universe. This obviously means that both Waller and the characters from Peacemaker are going to be part of this new DCU. This then seems to imply that this is a DC Universe soft reboot only, and not the expansive hard reboot that many, including myself, have been advocating. And while it’s not at all a bad thing, as I’m very excited for this new slate, but it definitely is confusing. What Does A DC Universe Soft Reboot Mean? Having certain members of the old DCEU remain in this new Universe, is going to raise a lot of questions about what is canon and what isn’t in the DCU. Did the events of both Suicide Squad movies happen? Did Peacemaker? Since we now have official confirmation that season 2 of Peacemaker is on hold, are parts of season 2 being retooled into the Waller series? And given Waller’s involvement with Black Adam, are the events of that movie canon in this new DCU, even though the actor and character aren’t. A DC Universe soft reboot also lends a lot of credence to theories that other actors from the previous DCEU may return to continue playing the same characters. Such as Jason Mamoa or Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Gunn also, seemingly but not really, mentioned that the Shazam! And Aquaman sequels, along with the Flash movie will also tie into the new DCU. Somehow. Which again, seems to imply that this is a DC Universe soft reboot, more so than anything else. Now, what is canon and what isn’t; which movies of the old DCEU happened and which didn’t, is something that James Gunn and DC Studios have to clarify beyond a shadow of a doubt. Because as excited as I am for DC to finally have a plan for their cinematic universe, there are still a lot of things that feel murky and confusing. Stay tuned for more from this new DC Universe as it happens. What are your thoughts on this soft rebooting of the DCU? Would you have preferred a hard reboot? Let me know in the comments below. this happened.
and i just… i honestly can't believe anyone who's mad at DC's plans to not continue the Snyderverse actually know what his plans for the future movies were
In the second installment, Lois Lane (Amy Adams) was going to die, effectively pushing Superman (Henry Cavill) over the edge and allowing him to fall prey to Darkseid's influence by way of the Anti-Life Equation. With the Man of Steel now at his side, the New God easily conquers the Earth, murdering Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) in the process. Batman (Ben Affleck) leads a band of post-apocalyptic rebels (Cyborg, Flash, Mera, Deathstroke, and Joker) as they launch a daring mission to steal a Mother Box and use it to power the cosmic treadmill. Barry (Ezra Miller) is then sent back in time and warns Bruce about Lois being "the key" (the dream in BvS). Ultimately, however, the Caped Crusader sacrifices his own life to save Clark's soul.
no no nvm you guys are totally right this all sounds…
“So basically in the alternate-future movie, we would have been in this post-Superman, Anti-Life Equation world, where the team knew that the only way to fix the world was to run Flash back and warn Bruce to save Lois," Snyder said of his sequel. "And so in that world, the movie was basically going to be about a ragtag group of Justice League members pulling off a crazy mission to steal a Mother Box from this half-destroyed cathedral in Gotham and get it back to the Batcave in order to use it to power the cosmic treadmill to jump Flash back in time.” He added, “And the night before the big mission, they would have this last supper sort of reckoning, where they would all tell their stories. One of those stories was Joker telling the story of the death of Robin.”
…very good and super profitable and fun to watch and totally not just more tonally dissonant grimdark horseshoe where iconic pop culture characters chase after a cube-shaped maguffin…
Fast forward into the Snyderverse, Clark Kent and Lois Lane bring their son to the all-familiar Batcave and ask him to pick up where their fallen friend left off.  “Twenty years later, on the anniversary of [Batman’s] death, they take young Bruce Kent down to the Batcave and they say, ‘Your Uncle Bruce would’ve been proud if you did this,” Snyder said.
with lots of fun details for the fans of all those comics where… bruce dies and superman's human son becomes the next batman?
Namely, the fact that Bruce may be responsible for Lois Lane's pregnancy, causing tension between him and his teammate.
or would you rather have seen Superman and Batman fight over who cucked who?
anyway im hype for the next Harley Quinn movie. wake me up when that happens.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
Tumblr media
No movie has ever been quite like Zack Snyder’s Justice League. After all the hubbub, I think everyone's curious to see the end results. Have the petitions, billboards, and millions of hashtags been worth it?
Tumblr media
Following the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), a series of ominous dreams warn Batman (Ben Affleck) of an ancient evil's return. Bringing together Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), might be enough to stop world-conqueror Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) and his army of Parademons before he can assemble the three matter-altering Mother Boxes hidden on Earth and use them to reshape the world.
If you’ve seen 2017’s Justice League, you’ve mostly seen this movie... but not really. Obviously, the running time is much longer, which means everyone gets more opportunities to show off their abilities and develop their characters. The big winners are The Flash and Cyborg, who kind of become the hearts of this adventure. The Flash plays a huge part in the finale. Now enormously endearing, you can't wait to see more of him. With Victor Stone/Cyborg’s father, Silas Stone (Joe Morton) we get a much more emotional story than before. Surprisingly, Steppenwolf also gets a lot more material. Rather than a generic gray CGI monster, he’s a gray CGI monster with just enough dimension to make you wonder how you feel about him. Though he remains a force of destruction, his backstory is expanded upon greatly. He’s been sent on a mission by the lord of Apokolips, Darkseid (voiced by Ray Porter) following a failed coup. If he cowers in front of Darkseid’s enforcer DeSaad (Peter Guinness) and barely dares utter his lord's name, how big a threat are the heroes actually facing?!
Also different is the overall tone. Whether you care for Zack Snyder as a director or not, he has a distinct, recognizable style and that’s always preferable to a gooey mush no one has put any kind of mark upon. The score is consistent with the previous Man of Steel and BvS films, the humor is significantly downplayed, and the violence (you might call it edginess) is dialed up. There’s also a lot more slow-motion. With the seven narrative acts, this feels so much like a living comic book that all you can think about are double-page spreads. It’s still moving, but you have the time to drink in all of the details.
The fights feel epic - even though you already “know” how things will end. The fallout of Superman’s death is handled so much better you’ll never look back at the way it was previously handled (actually, I kind of like what they do here more than in the original comic it takes its inspiration from). All of the actors get to reprise/expand upon their roles, the best bits you saw before remain but the plot is clearer, more satisfying. If you helped convince Warner Bros. to make this happen, you’ll be over the moon.
This is a better movie than the one we saw before but it isn’t the best movie it could be. The running time must be criticized. For the most part, you don’t really feel it, particularly not at home. You will grow restless during the Epilogue, however. This segment feels self-indulgent. We're not talking a quick tease of more to come (even if this movie doesn’t get a sequel, you just assume the adventures will continue). We get at least 20+ minutes of new characters and plots. Be grateful for what you got, Mr. Snyder, show some restraint.
My final criticism concerns the screenplay. It’s terrific that this movie is better than the two-hour version in every way (including the special effects) but I'd argue almost every movie could be made “better” if it were longer. Anyone can write a novel that spans 10,000 pages or shoot a 7+ season TV show with fully-rendered characters. What’s impressive is delivering all that in a fraction of the time. Zack Snyder’s Justice League does not successfully do everything it wants as efficiently as it should.
I never expected Zack Snyder’s Justice League to happen. Now, here we are, and I’m grateful. This is a fun movie, even when it does teeter towards becoming an edgelord’s idea of what a superhero adventure should be like. It’s better paced, edited, scored, and realized. Its epilogue is a bit much, however. I say cut the movie off after the scene with Deathstroke and you have a better end product. It may be self-indulgent towards the end, but this new Justice League is what we hoped for. (March 28, 2021)

HOLD ON JUST A MINUTE
These are excerpts from an interview Scott Mendelson (for Forbes) did with Hugh Jackman, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek last week. Here’s the link:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2018/03/28/hugh-jackman-on-greatest-showman-challenges-and-retiring-from-wolverine/#b19348e63ca4
THIS is what they said about bringing the show to Broadway:
Mendelson: Is there any possibility that we'll see more of his life? Either in a theatrical sequel or in a Broadway show? I can't imagine Fox is looking at these numbers and saying, "Yeah, we're done."
Jackman: We were talking about a live version of the show even before [the movie] came out. There was a discussion at one point in the eight-year journey of this movie of maybe going live first. I remember Stacey Snider calling me and saying, "Maybe we go live first."
When Keala Settle got up, stood in the middle of a room and sang “This Is Me,” with no makeup, no nothing, no anything, there was not a dry eye in the house. The musical really works live.
Pasek: One thing I think we are all so heartened by is the audience response and the fan response, and that it's coming from people all over the world. We're really thinking about whatever else could happen with this piece and with these songs, these performances — how can we get it to those people who have championed it and who have, in a way, made it theirs? How can we give something else back to them?
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
Jackman: I have a movie coming out called The Front Runner with Jason Reitman. I finished filming that last year, and honestly, we are working hard right now on working out a live version of the show. There's like three different possibilities currently. (Highlighted by me) And that's the long answer for saying “unemployed.” But you should ask these guys. Because these guys are literally, like, you have 15 jobs currently.
Pasek: We're getting to extend our forced friendship with Hugh Jackman, so we made him be friends with us.
Jackman: No, no, it wasn't forced. I said if we do north of $250 million [worldwide], we'll stay friends!
THIS IS IT GUYS GALS AND NON-BINARY PALS WE’RE GETTING A LIVE-ACTION VERSION OF THE GREATEST SHOWMAN!!! I’M SO EXCITED!!!

Link Tank: Sabrina the Teenage Witch is Headed to Riverdale
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is officially part of the Riverdale universe, and it’s strange to say the least.
“Riverdale’s original idea of crazy was that Archie Andrews was sleeping with his teacher and Jason Blossom was very dead. Five seasons and a cult, several murders, some supernatural monsters, and two teachers randomly leaping out of the same damn window, anything goes—so at this point, the fact that a new trailer heralding a long-awaited crossover is so bananas should be unsurprising. And yet, reader. And yet.”

A new LEGO set based on Spider-Man: No Way Home might clue us in on some of the film’s secrets.
“The new LEGO set for Spider-Man: No Way Home not only provides cool visuals, but it also raises some important questions. On the box, we can see Wong getting trapped by what looks like a giant robot rover with a claw and MJ is using a candlestick to try and help him. We can also see one scenario where Peter is trying to drive away on a motorcycle and the Cloak of Levitation is following after him. On the flip side of the box, Wong is deeply engaged in computer research while Doctor Strange wields a … wrench?”

Wonder Woman herself comes clean on how poorly director Joss Whedon treated the cast on set while filming reshoots for Justice League.
“Ray Fisher has had a long, public feud with Justice League reshoots director Joss Whedon over what he says was ‘gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable behavior on set. While not all of his co-stars were quick to voice their support as he took on everyone he possibly could at WarnerMedia for what he saw as an ineffective investigation into the allegations, one person who very quickly did was Wonder Woman actor Gal Gadot.”

Facebook is in full rebrand mode and plans to change the companies name to reflect better where its mission statements and goals lie.
“Facebook is planning to change its company name next week to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter. The coming name change, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th, but could unveil sooner, is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail.”

Acclaimed independent filmmaker Nia Dacosta is about to bring her unique flair to the MCU with The Marvels, now hitting theaters in February of 2023.
“Now, DaCosta is working on her third film, The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel, the 2019 film that introduced the moviegoing public to astronaut, test pilot, and superhero Major Carol Danvers. The Marvels, like all Marvel projects, is hotly anticipated, but DaCosta is rising to the occasion. The native New Yorker is currently in England where she is hard at work on her current project. We spoke by telephone as she drove home after a full day of filming about what it’s like to work on a really big film, how she empowers women characters, and the limits of collaboration.”

Activision Blizzard might’ve found a way to get out of their ongoing lawsuit.
“Activision Blizzard, embroiled in legal wranglings over alleged appalling work conditions for its staff, has requested additional time to investigate and potentially disqualify the California Department of Fair and Equal Housing from its ongoing legal battle with the agency. This is on account of potential ethics violations in its other ongoing legal battle with the California Department of Fair and Equal Housing. This is likely very bad for the DFEH’s prospects in both cases.”

Justice League
youtube
Tumblr media
Despite today’s entry for 2017’s Justice League (trailer) happening nearly four years after its original theatrical release, it was imperative for me to revisit this film a month out from HBOMAX’s planned March 18th release of the director’s cut that has the added prefix, Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Where do I begin with the backstory on this one!? Glossing over the behind-the-scenes hoopla would be a disservice, especially for any of you readers checking this out many years after the fact who have no idea about how these two versions came to be. I will attempt to provide some degree of context before jumping into my take on Justice League, so please bear with me….or jump ahead a few paragraphs. Director Zack Snyder caught a lot of flak from ardent comic book fans for his darker takes and artistic direction on Superman and Batman in his two previous films, Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. I reviewed both films here already and was part of the minority who was a fan of the polarizing films. Fast forward a couple years later and Snyder wraps shooting Justice League, which is the big finale to the current arc of DC Comics movie canon much like how Avengers: Endgame was for the Marvel films. However, early in post-production Snyder suffers a family tragedy with his daughter committing suicide and has no choice but to leave his post on the film, but not before handing off post-production duties to Joss Whedon, the director behind the first two, uber-successful Avengers films.
Tumblr media
Amidst all this controversy, the executives at Warner Bros. are receiving a ton of criticism of not wanting another lengthy, dark tome of a superhero film like Snyder’s previous efforts. I praised The Avengers and other MCU films on here before, and I love their style of filmmaking too, but one common trait among Marvel films is that they are generally more lighthearted with more gags and feel more like “soft” PG-13 experiences. Which is a good thing for those films because that was how they were envisioned from the beginning, but speculation was running wild going into Justice League’s 2017 theatrical release that Joss Whedon was under intense pressure from Warner Bros. executives to reshoot scenes to add in more family friendly humor, and lighten up the length and tone of the movie in post-production to appeal to the criticism. The result was a two hour movie that was not a hit with much of anyone. Snyder critics were not satisfied with the changes, and fans like myself of Snyder’s past films felt like his work and vision for the movie was compromised. Over the next few years, slow-but-steady support grew over social media to #releasethesnydercut of Justice League. I thought this social media movement was a pipe dream that would never seem like a possibility for Warner to dedicate those resources to allow Snyder to re-cut the movie. Eventually though, much of the original cast and crew, and more and more fans frequently kept that hashtag alive, which culminated several months ago when Warner Bros. announced that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be releasing on its HBOMAX streaming service this coming March. Snyder’s version will be double in length at four hours, and HBOMAX was originally going to release it as four weekly episodic installments, but later switched it back to one whole film. I am grateful that Snyder is finally getting his chance to redeem himself and release the movie how he originally envisioned, and am hopeful he wins over fans and critics alike. Now with the director’s cut just over a month out, I wanted to make sure to watch 2017’s version of the film one more time before then so I can get a better grasp at what was switched up for the new cut. Are you still with me? Good, now let us proceed with breaking down Whedon’s take on Justice League.
Tumblr media
This 2017 cut opens up with a flashback of kids doing a smartphone interview with Superman (Henry Cavill), fresh off the scene of duty which leads to an opening credits montage of the world still reeling from the death of Superman after his battle with Darkseid in Batman V Superman. This then jumps to Batman (Ben Affleck) failing at recruiting Aquaman (Jason Momoa) to join him for anticipating a new threat. That threat is the return of Steppenwolf (voiced by Ciarán Hinds), who is on a quest to regain his power by procuring three hidden “Mother Boxes.” Eventually Bats touches base with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) to proselytize aid to combat Steppenwolf. That help comes in the form of Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller). Both heroes are introduced with having conflicts with their fathers, but eventually Wonder Woman convinces Cyborg to join up, and Batman has an entertaining scene with The Flash who fanboys out at Batman after he surprises Flash in his hideout. I am conflicted with Miller’s performance as Flash. I cannot help but feel he is the one who received the bulk of the re-shoot orders to add in some extra doses of levity throughout the film, because he repeatedly chimes in with one star struck idolizing gag after another throughout. A few of the jokes actually hit, but they are a bit much and I could not help but think I would have appreciated his act more if his zany would have been dialed back by about 60%. My gut tells me that was how Snyder originally directed him, so I will have to wait to see what his cut has in store. I cannot lie and admit I was like plenty of fans online wanting Grant Gustin to bring his pristine TV version of The Flash to the silver screen instead, but I understand Warner Bros. in wanting to keep the CW-TV canon and movie canon separate….but then they did that brief Gustin/Miller crossover last year on the TV series….and well, I have no idea what to make of it other than I was cracking up throughout their bizarre exchange, so I will just link you to the clip here to decide for yourselves.
Tumblr media
A huge mid-film clash with Steppenwolf leads to Aquaman joining the team and Batman deciding it for the best to exploit the tech used on Cyborg to resurrect Superman….it does not seem right to type that out so matter-of-factly, and the buildup for this miraculous endeavor is shockingly swift and to the point. They accomplish this feat by digging up ‘ol Supes and bringing him to the magical waters that were used to resurrect Zod in the last film, and then apply one of the mystical Mother Boxes in conjunction with electrical energy from Flash’s speed to bring Superman back from the grave. It works, and the resulting fallout from a shaken-and-rampant Superman dueling with his new Super-pals was a delightful debacle to watch playout before Lois Lane (Amy Adams) shows up to reignite Superman’s humanity. Seeing those two reunite for a couple special scenes in the film was heartwarming, but also felt rushed with their brief screen time they share together, and I am hoping to see their dynamic explored more in the new cut. The final act sees the Justice League forming to take on Steppenwolf who now has the power of all three Mother Boxes on his side for an early advantage, until Superman shows up and instantly lays waste upon him and Steppenwolf instantly transforms from universal threat to a puny-putty-squad-esque-pushover. I am all for the Justice League prevailing, and I know Superman is invincible and all that, but I was stunned to see Steppenwolf instantly crumble to the ‘ol blue and red. I am hoping for a slightly more dramatic back-and-forth encounter in Snyder’s reimagining, but I will not hold out hope for the amount of CG work involved already in Whedon’s version and cannot imagine how much it would cost to completely alter the final battle for a more enticing experience. In the aftermath of Steppenwolf’s demise is the establishing of the building blocks of the Justice League’s headquarters in a charming hint of what is in store for this superhero team. Also make sure to stick around for both stingers, as the first has an awesome exchange between Flash and Superman to answer the long-debated fan question of which hero is faster, and then a stinger of the villains to come for the inevitable sequel.
Tumblr media
There are eight extras totaling a little over an hour of bonus features to sift through. Of the eight pieces, there are three I recommend checking out the most: Road to Justice interviews many DC writers and artists who do an intriguing abridged history of key story arcs from the Justice League over the decades. Heart of Justice is a closer look at the historic core of the team in Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Justice League: New Heroes conversely goes in-depth on Cyborg, Aquaman and Flash. If you need to get caught back up to speed on the DC films, than those three extras are a recommended primer worth checking out. Even with all my aforementioned qualms with Justice League above, I did not come out of it outright hating the film. If Flash’s humor would have been dialed back a couple degrees and just an extra 10-15 minutes added to some of the scenes that I felt were shortchanged, then I would have had a better outlook here instead. I know the average theater-goer despises 2+ hour films, and for the average theater-goer that is not a hardcore comic book fan, than this Whedon cut of the film should suit you just fine. However, I cannot get fully behind what feels like a sabotaged cut, and eagerly await to see what the four hour version from Zack Snyder has in store for me next month.

2017: Movies Of The Year
10 Alien Covenant
- Pretty much a retread of Alien. Not awful, but kinda frustrating. Was that REALLY all they could do with the franchise?
9 Shin Godzilla
- A one night only screening, but an opportunity I couldn’t miss. An interesting spin on the King Of Monsters, but it was still a bit like the recent US Godzilla, in that there simply wasn’t enough of The Big Guy.
8 Justice League
- This worked. I feel that too many people are willing DC’s movies to fail, and just don’t sit back and let themselves enjoy the damn things. More Wonder Woman is always a good thing, Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman was a definite digression from the original character, but like the MCU has shown us, that’s often a good thing. Unengaging villian, but not a terminal flaw.
7 Spider-Man Homecoming
- I admit to having been a bit wary about this one, but the MCU’s magic has been worked again. We now have our Spider-Man properly installed, and facing one of the better realised villains in Marvel Studio’s catalogue. It might have been good to allow Spidey to grow for a bit, but... well, that’s not exactly going to happen, is it...?
6 Logan
- The best of the solo Wolverine movies, without a doubt. Stellar performances from Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart. Bleak, grim, but that’s how it had to be. If Hugh bows out now, he has definitely gone out on a high.
5 Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets
- I seem to have been one of the few who actually went to see this. And even fewer still who ACTUALLY GOT IT, ‘cause I knew the source material. Maybe not as Sixties/early Seventies in style as the French comics that this movie draws from, but recognisably Valerian and Laureline (almost panel for panel at times), whilst hitting the audience with the usual visuals and action they’ve come to expect from a big summer movie. Guess we’re not going to get a sequel, though... *frowns, and sighs*
4 Kong - Skull Island
- Another movie I was wary about, and another that actually exceeded expectations. NOT another retelling of the classic story, in that the (real) hero of the movie doesn’t end up in New York chasing a girl. On the island, he IS King, and we’re left in no doubt about it. Very enjoyable, and oh, the delicious set-up for what’s to come in the end credits...
3 Star Wars - The Last Jedi
- I was so glad this worked out. Yes, there was one element that left me a bit dissatisfied (that I won’t expand upon for fear of dropping spoilers), but other movies have sinned in that manner a whole bunch more (and therefore don’t make this list). More needs to be actually said here than can be conveyed by heaps of action and spaceships shooting other spaceships, and the screen-writers and director take the time to just go ahead and do that.
NOT an “Empire” retread, and it is SO GOOD to see Carrie Fisher play Leia as the leader we always knew she could be. Thank you.
2 Wonder Woman
- The saviour of the DC “Cinematic Universe”? I’d say so, if I didn’t already think more highly of previous movies in the still rather hurried series than many do. Gal Gadot continues to impress every time she straps on the armour, and the backstory laid out in this movie supports her character just fine, managing to inject some “fish out of water” funny moments with more skill and respect to what’s come before than other movies in the genre (you may know what I’m talking about..)
A movie that doesn’t have to struggle with fitting itself into the grand scheme that lies ahead, just like the Big Winner for this year...
1 Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2
- Okay, so maybe the soundtrack wasn’t as “immediate” as in the first movie, and now as much of a “character” as in “Volume 1″, but hey, this is still James Gunn’s excellent Guardians we’re talking about, and they do not disappoint. New characters - friends AND foes - some revelations, some great action and brilliant funnies, and all in a package that doesn’t NEED to be part of the run-up to AVENGERS - INFINITY WAR.
It does have the single most-heart-wrenching moment in the movies this year, but the joy-ride has to end somewhere. Now take a deep breath, and brace for what’s to come...

Justice League Thoughts
There will be spoilers. You have been warned.
I watched Justice League last night, and while I enjoyed it, I could see some glaring flaws, and I know why it faces heavy criticism.
The movie was slow to start. It took a long time to get everyone in the same place. However, there were lots of action sequences, so it was never very boring. The banter between characters and the one-liners didn’t really bother me until the ending, when I feel the movie could have done better by letting everyone stand back and silent enjoy the sweet scent of victory. The cinematography was beautiful. Like Zack Snyder’s other movies, each shot could be a comic panel. The movie aesthetic was usually dark and gloomy, but it makes the well-lit scenes (Wonder Woman’s rescue of hostages, Superman and Lois on the farm, the ending scene with peace and hope and light restored) all the more precious. However, the CGI fails in some places, especially Henry Cavill’s mouth. Having watched Transformers, the motherboxes made me giggle. Three Allsparks! The Apokolips Invasion also lacks the original Kirby aesthetic, which is a huge disappointment.
I must say, I absolutely hate the idea of adapting the Justice League movie from Geoff Johns’ N52 Justice League origin. Disregarding the fact that Justice League: War, a faithful adaptation of the storyline, gave everyone boring, one-note personalities and changed the team make-up, something as big as the 4th world should not be part of an origin story. The Justice League is young, inexperienced, untried. They have not yet learned to work alongside each other, much less formed the strong friendships that would later guide them as a team. Darkseid and his armies are the greatest villains in the DCU. They are the very incarnation of evil. They are a force of destruction and decay to be slowed but never stopped. And yet the viewer is asked to believe that a fledgling team of misfits can defeat the greatest evil the world will ever know. Either the Justice League fails miserably, or Darkseid must be weakened to allow the Justice League to defeat him. And then? Defeating the greatest villain the universe has as the origin story means that any sequels will an inevitable letdown. What could feasibly threaten a team that has already defeated the incarnation of all evil? In terms of narrative escalation, this just isn’t done. I would prefer having Starro, Dinosaur Island, or White Martians as the enemies for the origin story. Threatening enough to destroy the world, yet still on the same level as a just-formed Justice League.
I generally liked the cast. I thought they had great chemistry. I loved the friendship between them, especially for the big three of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. A little bit on the individual characters:
Wonder Woman: I absolutely loved her. She and Cyborg were among my favorite parts of the team. She is an older and wiser hero, but still idealistic, still loving. She helps Cyborg deal with his pain and serves as Batman’s voice of reason. She and Batman are very close friends, but never romantic (in fact she’s still longing for Steve). The same can be said for Superman. She helps him remember who he is, but it’s Lois who really calms him down. Overall, Batman might have recruited the team, but Wonder Woman is the glue that holds them together. Gal Gadot is a little flat on the sadder scenes, but she’s absolutely fierce during the action scenes and I like that.
Cyborg: Cyborg was perfect. His personality and character arc were very well-done and very comic faithful. He even gives a “booyah.” Sadly he’s interacting with Flash and the Justice League and not Beast Boy and the Teen Titans, but you can’t have everything. His jagged metal shard look is also something I dislike. I would have liked something more robotic instead of Michael Bay Transformers, down to his crotch. However, the action scenes were enough to distract me from Cyborg’s less satisfactory look. He also made the Apokolips invasion plot seem less bad, because Cyborg is a very plot-relevant character. The actor was absolutely perfect, going through Cyborg’s fear and pain and later fascination with his abilities.
Aquaman: OUTRAGEOUS. I think Jason Momoa’s portrayal was okay. The American accent was jarring, since he was very much not in America when he started speaking English. Sadly he was the least developed of the League. It took a lasso around the leg to make him confess his thoughts.
Superman: Now that Cavill isn’t brooding or angry all the time, I can actually see his heavy resemblance to the Curt Swan/Kurt Schaffenberger Superman from the Silver Age comics. Now, I am no fan of Pre-Crisis Superman, but I very much love the art from the comic greats Schaffenberger and Swan. Cavill looked every bit as Superman should be: smiling, brave, hopeful. I loved his appearance during the final fight, when he acted as the beacon of hope. Also great his his resurrection. Diana might have restored his memories by addressing him as Kal-El, but it’s Lois appealing to him as Clark that brings him back to himself.
Batman: Ben Affleck’s Batman is pretty okay. It’s even refreshing to see a Batman who isn’t perfect, who doesn’t have a plan for everything. He makes mistakes and he’s fallible. But he also tries to be friendly with his teammates, cracking dry jokes to Flash and Aquaman and allowing himself to be vulnerable around Wonder Woman. Affleck did great at portraying an older, tired Batman. Besides, he gets the team together. What more can you ask of him?
Flash: Sorry, Ezra Miller fans, but I absolutely hate every single thing about his Flash. To start with, he’s not Barry Allen. He’s a student, not an actual chemist. He’s younger than most of the cast. He’s energetic, naive, and neurotic instead of calm, careful, and meticulous. Barry Allen might be awkward, but he’s also no slob. He’s fascinated by his speed powers, not so scared he only knows how to push people. Barry admires his fellow heroes, but he doesn’t worship them like a fanboy. Movie Barry acts more like DCAU Wally. He’s the general perception of what a Flash should be, with the name of “Barry Allen” slapped on. The Flash costume is also bad, as it’s a version of his over-complicated DCYou costume that looks like someone ripped off patches of his skin. Even more ridiculous is his speed effect. The Flash’s gig is running, yet the movie rarely shows him actually running, not even using the TV show’s much more comic-faithful streaking effect. Instead, he just teleports everywhere in a crackle of thunder. When he does get close up shots at him running...he barely knows how to run. Ezra Miller gives him an over-dramatic flopping stance that’s cringe-worthy to look at. However, I guess that matches the nervous, nerdy boy he’s characterized as. The biggest problem is that the Flash does not seem to be in the same movie as the rest of the team. He’s funny and quirky, but ultimately he’s more like an inserted audience member or a commentary track. He’s there to comment hilariously on himself and the situations the team gets in, and squee over the other heroes. His attitude during fight scenes is also jarring. Everyone else is ready to go, and yet the Flash is a ball of nerves constantly complaining over his phobia or his health. (the only thing missing is a “I want my mommy” line, which I’m sure we’ll see enough of in a Flashpoint movie) As a result, he destroys the heroic, hot-blooded mood of every scene he appears in. I would say he’s definitely the weak link in this movie.
Dealing with loss and grief and regaining hope is a big part of the movie, and I do like this overarching theme. However, the build-up to Superman’s big world-saving return and suddenly improved relationship with the Justice League falls a little short. However, I don’t mind this. It’s actually the previous Snyder films that caused problems with this one.
IT IS ABSOLUTELY ZACK SNYDER’S FAULT THAT THE DCEU BECAME A DARK, DEPRESSING MESS.
Zack Snyder made a dark and depressing Superman film, truly an achievement in failure. He gaffed with Batman and Superman’s first meeting in the DCEU, making the hole deeper. And if the news is right, his Justice League would have been more of the same fare. The movie we got is far from perfect, but I enjoyed it, and I don’t know if I’d say the same thing about the Snyder cut.

“Justice League” Movie Review
Justice League is the 5th film in the current DC Extended Universe, and the direct sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is first time we get to see all our favorite DC superheroes on screen together. Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg – they’re all here, and things are not looking up for the world at large. With Superman gone, hope is far from prevalent, and fear and acts of terror are on the rise. But when Steppenwolf, a doom-bringer from another world, begins to exact his devastating plan on earth, bringing a race of parademons to attack those on whom they can smell fear, the world will need a team of warriors to band together and put aside their differences in order to stop him, and bring justice for all.
This movie had a lot riding on its shoulders. For starters, it’s the story sequel to Batman v Superman, which was not only one of the worst films of last year, but one of probably the top 10 worst superhero films ever made. But it also directly follows Wonder Woman, one of the best, and easily the biggest, films of this year so far. To top all of that off, production on the film was an absolute nightmare scene, not in the sense that it was always going to be a bad movie or not, but there was just so much that happened to it between the pre and post-production process, it was hard to imagine what kind of film it would end up being at all. After director Zack Snyder tragically lost his daughter to suicide and had to step away from the project in early March, Joss Whedon (director of the first two Avengers flicks) stepped in to help finish the project, and based on the two artists’ wildly differing styles, people wondered if the film would feel too jumbled, as if torn between two visions. How is the movie? Well, to put it plainly, it’s just fun.
Let’s begin with the positives, as I always do: this is a fun ride to take with this team. After the dreariness of Batman v Superman soured most people to the idea of the DCEU, Justice League would have to give them a sense that the idea could still work, provided some things were shifted around and they like the chemistry of the league itself. And for my money, the chemistry is absolutely there. Sure, it could use a little more work, and truth be told Cyborg is the only one who really gets any true, at-length character development, but when these characters are all on screen together, their individual personalities jive well off of each other without having to compromise the distinct uniqueness of any one member. Each individual member gets a chance to shine, and none overpower the others in terms of screen presence enough to make the audience feel as if this film is owned by any one character.
Bruce and Diana make a great duo with solid chemistry, both on the recruiting path, and both aware of the horrors to come if they don’t succeed in bringing these people together, with Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot still inhabiting these characters better than most others before them have. Ezra Miller’s Flash is actually quite a fun character to interact with, providing most of the quips and the comic relief, but not in a way that feels too childish or annoying enough to beg for DC to just bring Grant Gustin into the mix. Going into it, I thought Cyborg might be the weak link since we never got to see any promotion for his character really outside of this film, but truth be told, although it wasn’t a particularly “stand out” performance, Victor’s development ends up being one of the more memorable and well-handled plot points throughout the film overall. And this brings us, of course, to Superman (honestly if you really thought they would have a Justice League film without Superman, I don’t know what to tell you). How does the movie handle the man of steel this time around? Well, that S on his chest may actually yield some hope for the horizon yet.
Anyone who’s known me for any meaningful length of time knows that I am a humungous Superman fan. If anyone ever asks who my favorite superhero is, he is always the answer. Superman: The Movie was the first superhero film I ever saw and I’ve loved this character and everything about him ever since. Anyone who’s known me for any length of time knows I also have very strong feelings about how the character should be handled, and that I believe the DCEU thus far has done that fairly poorly. However, in this incarnation, we finally get to see Henry Cavill show us a little bit of that brilliant, classical charisma he brought to Man from U.N.C.L.E., and give us easily the best Superman of the DCEU thus far. He cracks jokes, he smiles (imagine that), and once he actually gets to work with the team, one feels as if everything has finally come together the way it should for these heroes…for the most part.
And this brings us into the negatives of the film (and, as a preface: although there are plenty of them, they don’t hold enough combined weight, at least not to me, to bring the movie down from being enjoyable). Ironically, the guy they spent most of the marketing money on, Aquaman, actually ends up with the least compelling character and story arc in the whole movie. Don’t get me wrong, Jason Momoa fits the reincarnation of the character like a glove, and he’s entertaining to watch, but they just never give him anything to do besides shout one-liners, throw a spear, and stand there looking like Mr. Macho Cool Man. His solo movie is just a little over a year away, so I expect we’ll definitely get a good bit more development there (it is James Wan behind the camera after all), but still one can’t help but feel that the foundation laid here is lacking the necessary gravity to care what happens to him beyond there being a missing team member if he gets taken out.
The film also suffers by way of its villain, but not in the way that most Marvel films or even Wonder Woman did. Steppenwolf isn’t just an underdeveloped villain; he’s not compelling in really any way at all. While it’s fun to see the heroes take him down, he provides no real threat that one is ever unsure the heroes will defeat. His plan, his backstory, and his development is all generic, C-level stuff, and that’s not to mention he sounds like the guy who voices Optimus Prime in the Transformers films. Every time he was on screen, all I was interested in was getting back to the heroes and what they were doing. I only ever cared about his character insofar as he moved the plot forward, but given the weakness of the plot itself, I found myself unable to truly invest in whatever he was doing. There’s nothing to his character beyond wanting to destroy the world, and as reliable of a thing that may be for heroes to fight against, the lack of a memorable why behind that destruction gives the film no real stakes to overcome.
Warner Bros. had a mandate for the production team behind this picture that it could not exceed a 2 hour run-time, and while I understand the need not to make films overlong for the sake of not winding out an audience, I believe it ultimately hurts the film’s narrative flow. The first act has to cover a lot of ground very quickly with establishing each of these characters individually, and so the film does feel rushed in a number of spots. There are also some visual effects and editing mistakes that I thought could have been cleaned up, and a couple of scenes where the green screen and CG from re-shoots is simply way too obvious to ignore (although the CG of Cyborg and Henry Cavill’s mustache didn’t bother me as much as it might some people). At times the film does feel as if it’s torn between two different visions, and while that can be a tad jarring, it ultimately doesn’t deter from the narrative enough to make it incohesive.
Overall, Justice League is a good time – to a fault, but still a good time. It doesn’t carry any real weight and doesn’t have much gravity in terms of its far-reaching implications for the rest of the DCEU, but that’s okay for now. It’s average, but it’s a fun average, and that’s what really needed to work to give this universe the push and the hope it needs to continue. While the villain is incredibly generic, and the plot is noticeably weak, with a few plot holes popping up here and there, the chemistry between these heroes is undeniably there, and I look forward to seeing them again. Oh, and there are two credits sequences (mid and post), so be sure to stick around for both of those too. My overall verdict: see it, but at a discounted price, like a matinee or early bird showtime.
I’m giving “Justice League” a 7.2/10.

Although actual nominations won’t be in until Tuesday I added a mix of predicted favourites and personal choices of mine for wishful thinking purposes. Read to get some sort of context and personal filter on what to expect and hope for come January 23rd for the 90th Annual Academy Awards.
Best Picture
Blade Runner 2049 * – Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Bud Yorkin
Call Me By Your Name – Emilie Georges, Luca Guadagnino, James Ivory, Marco Morabito, Howard Rosenman, Peter Spears
Dunkirk – Emma Thomas
The Florida Project – Sean Baker, Chris Bergoch, Kevin Chinoy, Andrew Duncan, Alex Saks Francesca Silvestri, Shih-Ching Tsou
Get Out – Jason Blum, Edward H. Hamm Jr., Sean McKittrick, Jordan Peele
Lady Bird – Eli Bush, Evelyn O’Neill, Scott Rudin
Mudbound – Carl Effenson, Sally Jo Effenson, Cassian Elwes, Charles D. King, Christopher Lemole, Kim Roth, Tim Zajaros
The Shape of Water – J. Miles Dale, Guillermo del Toro
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri – Graham Broadbent, Peter Czernin, Martin McDonagh
Wonder Woman – Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Richard Suckle
Blade Runner 2049
Call Me By Your Name
Dunkirk
The Florida Project
Get Out
Lady Bird
Mudbound
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Wonder Woman
Blade Runner 2049 was my favourite movie of the year, Three Billboards was my second favourite, Lady Bird and Get Out were good too. I found Dunkirk to be overrated, confusing and far from Nolan’s best. I am the only person besides my mom that didn’t like Wonder Woman. Mudbound was very boring to me. I like the idea of The Florida Project which has landed on several best of lists winning because of its underclass nature & humble beginnings, a true underdog. I have not seen The Shape of Water but its awards attention has caught my interest and Call Me By Your Name has as much chance of winning as it does being interest to me.
Actress In A Leading Role
Jessica Chastain – Molly’s Game
Gal Gadot – Wonder Woman
Sally Hawkins – The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand* – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird
Jessica Chastain
Gal Gadot
Sally Hawkins
Frances McDormand
Saoirse Ronan
This is a runaway for Frances McDormand who gives her best performance since Fargo. Gal Gadot is good but her nomination would be the story here. Sally Hawkins gives an impressive performance as a deaf-mute. I think Saoirse only gets acclaim because she has a flawless american accent. Jessica Chastain does good character work and deserved the Oscar for Zero Dark Thirty which Jennifer Lawrence won for Silver Linings Playbook (which I love but is not Best Actress worthy).
Actress in A Supporting Role
Octavia Spencer – The Shape of Water
Holly Hunter – The Big Sick
Laurie Metcalf – Lady Bird
Hong Chau – Downsizing
Allison Janney – I, Tonya
Octavia Spencer (Right)
Holly Hunter (Right)
Laurie Metcalf
Hong Chau
Allison Janney
Allison Janney all the way here. Holly Hunter is good in The Big Sick and Octavia Spencer always knows what she’s doing (still haven’t seen Shape of Water or it would fill up the supporting actor category). Hong Chau got raves out of Downsizing, additionally annoying and unfair because the Oscars have become so politicized in recent years this would be seen as a win for diversity after the 87th & 88th #OscarsSoWhite controversies. It’s ironic that her possible nomination would come from writer/director Alexander Payne indulging in his stereotypical racist tendencies. I guess Hollywood takes diversity where they can get it.
Actor In A Leading Role
Hugh Jackman * – Logan
Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out
James McAvoy – Split
Gary Oldman – The Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington – Roman J. Israel Esq.
Hugh Jackman
Daniel Kaluuya
James McAvoy
Gary Oldman
Denzel Washington
This race is Gary Oldman’s to lose. He has turned in a career full of good performances and this is icing on the cake. If anything would hamper him from winning it’d be that the choice is too obvious playing historical figure Winston Churchill. Denzel always makes a great oscar campaign push and he has been hungry for a third win despite being the weakest reviewed movie of the bunch. I didn’t include Timothy Chalamet from ‘Call Me’ because I think his praise is due to the fact that reviewers aren’t aware he’s playing himself in role better written than he is like all first time actor nominees. Hugh Jackman deserves it for Logan even though I’m not a huge fan of that movie he deserves recognition for what he brought to the character. Daniel Kaluuya gives a subtle understated performance that rewards repeat viewings. And James McAvoy has been close to forgotten for his memorable turn in Split as someone with multiple personality disorder I’d like him to get recognized.
Actor In A Supporting Role
Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project
Jamie Foxx – Baby Driver
Christopher Plummer – All the Money In the World
Sam Rockwell – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Patrick Stewart * – Logan
Willem Dafoe
Jamie Foxx (saying “that’s Oscar worthy”)
Christopher Plummer
Sam Rockwell
Patrick Stewart
At the beginning of the campaign I would have said this was an easy win for Willem Dafoe’s warm performance in The Florida Project but another career character actor Sam Rockwell has upstaged him for Three Billboards. Christopher Plummer is good I imagine many people are still amazed he’s in themovie after the Kevin Spacey debacle. I thought Jamie Foxx gave one of his best performances in Baby Driver, he even makes an Oscar reference. Patrick Stewart was so good in Logan that it’s impressive he makes you believe his senile swearing version of Professor X is the same person.
Directing
Martin McDonagh – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Jordan Peele – Get Out
M. Night Shyamalan – Split
Guillermo del Toro – The Shape of Water
Denis Villeneuve – Blade Runner 2049
Jordan Peele, Get Out
M. Night Shyamalan, Split
Martin McDonaugh, Three Billboards
Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049
Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Denis Villeneuve made a sequel to a classic that was better than the original while making it his own thing. He received a BAFTA (British Oscars) nomination for this and might repeat all the categories for last year’s Arrival. Jordan Peele, Guilllermo del Toro, and Martin McDonaugh are shoe-ins for the nomination and Greta Gerwig is likely to actually be nominated for Lady Bird, a movie I liked a lot but has modest aims. I threw in a Shyamalan twist because not only has he been nominated for but Split is a legitimately good movie that is unique enough I feel another director couldn’t replicate, and being the best means you’re special.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Hampton Fancher and Michael Green – Blade Runner 2049
James Ivory – Call Me By Your Name
Aaron Sorkin – Molly’s Game
Stephen Chbosky and Steve Conrad and Jack Thorne – Wonder
Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber – The Disaster Artist
I think side by side with Three Billboards, Blade Runner is the best script this year and they happen to qualify for two different categories so yay! The Disaster Artist, Molly’s Game and Call Me are all favourites because it’s a weak year for this category which is why there will likely be a few surprises. I threw in Wonder because it’s high on the betting pool, commercially and critically successful, and it’s the movie every book lover expected to love and every movie lover expected to hate (but surprisingly didn’t) and The Perks of Being A Wallflower was pretty decent. Mudbound could score a nomination here to but I didn’t put it personally because its incremental pacing felt like a slog for me that just didn’t flow.
Adapted – Michael Green (who also wrote Alien Covenant, Logan, and Murder On The Orient Express all this year) rewrote Hampton Fancher’s screenplay (right)
Original – Greta Gerwig Writer/ Director of Lady Bird
Original – Martin McDonagh Writer/ Director of 3 Billboards
Original – Kumail Nanjiani & Emily V. Gordon wrote The Big Sick together. In writing credits the use of an ‘&’ denotes simultaneous collaboration while the use of ‘and’ indicates someone rewrote someone else’s screenplay
Original – Vanessa Taylor (co-writer of The Shape of Water with Del Toro)
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird
Martin McDonagh – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani – The Big Sick
Jordan Peele – Get Out
Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor – The Shape of Water
If Lady Bird doesn’t end up getting completely shut out come Oscar night for being good enough to get noticed but not enough to take home (typical Lady Bird amirite?) it’ll win here as Get Out and Shape muscle in on their visual splendor. Of course I don’t think any movie this year takes as many risks as the unpredictable 3 Billboards does in its screenplay so it should win. The Big Sick was in my top list for this year but original? C’mon its based pretty much on the real life story of its writers, it should be adapted if anything however rules are rules.
Best Cinematography
Roger Deakins – Blade Runner 2049
The 68 year old is the closest thing to a sure thing this year and has been nominated 13 times before without winning and this is his best work which everyone has said from the beginning. Some of his previous nominations include: The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, A Beautiful Mind, No Country For Old Men, Skyfall & Sicario. He absolutely deserves this one.
Best Original Score
Hanz Zimmer – Dunkirk
I didn’t like this movie but I listened to the score countless times while putting together my harsh review of it. The rarely idle Hans does the devil’s work here. And his Inception score was much better than Trent Reznor’s The Social Network which won that year. #robbed
Best Visual Effects
War for the Planet of the Apes
Another much hyped movie on my website I was let down by. I have never seen a director so obviously confident behind the camera its annoying that this series now so well realized spends its last chapter doing a prison break riff. Good Visual Effects are all about enhancing the story and I’ve never seen effects pushed so hard in that regard. Surprisingly, this rebooted series with state of the art effects that take YEARS to render has yet to win but unless members of the academy decide to feel sorry for Blade Runner or reward the epic looking latest Transformers: The Last Knight this should be a steal.
A Perfect and Backlash-Free Choice Oscar Nomination List Although actual nominations won’t be in until Tuesday I added a mix of predicted favourites and personal choices of mine for wishful thinking purposes.

If i was put in charge of the DC cinematic universe.
welp if WB approached me and told me: hey dude we will reboot this whole thing and we want you to help us out so we don't fuck this up...again. well this would be my pitch for the whole.cinematic.universe.
phase one:
Superman:birthright: this will start the franchise. in this one we see Clark being Superman for a year, being divissive among the public, but mostly accepted by everyone except Lex Luthor, who uses found alien tech to fake an invasion an blame it on the blue boy scout; his plan fails, of course, but now people are afraid that if there are more aliens out there, will they be as benevolent as Superman? and in a post credit scene shows Bruce Wayne watching all the info about Superman on the batcave, coming to the conclusion that he is not a menace, yet he's still inexperienced, so he won't let his guard 100% down for the moment.
Batman: Haunted Knight: now this is a Batman with nearly twentie five years of expirience, with Dick Grayson being Nightwing for a while and still haunted by the death of Jason Todd; the story starts after a series of murders with one thing in common: all the victims were villains, such as Hugo Strange, Kite Man, doctor Pig, among others. the killer calls himself Red Hood, who is revealed to Jason Todd, desillusioned by Batman's methods; fight were Batman actually has to protect the Joker from Jason, brutal yet emotional fight yadayadayada until Jason is arrested. in the after credits scene Amanda Waller comes to visit Jason an offers him a position on a team she's been working on.
Wonder Woman: with this one...it would be similar to the Gal Gadot's movie, but set in WW2 and now with the Olympian gods, specially Ares pulling the strings behind the scenes so only the strongest human are left for the things to come, this makes Diana desillusioned choosing from now on to defend mankind from beings that could use them. the after credits scenes shows Apollo and Athena concerned that Diana could had doomed humanity by making them depend on her instead of prepraring themselves for him. then it shows that the two gods were looking an omega symbol.
The Flash: It's pretty much Barry Allen being the Flash for a couple of months and dealing with regular criminals, but all changes when the rogues arrive. after credits scene we see a mysterious figure watching Henry Allen, Barry's father, the mysterious man wears a yellow and more sinister version of Flash's costume, he says: It's time to meet Barry
Aquaman: Arthur Curry is dragged by Mera into the Atlantean civil war in order to reclaim his throne from Ocean Master, Arthur's half brother. the after credits scenes shows Rick Flag jr. informing that they got the Atlantean (Ocean master).
Green Lantern: Basically trainning day in space, with Hal Jordan and Siniestro on the helm.
Justice League: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman finally get united thanks to a mysterious alien who introduces himself as J'onn J'onzz, who ask for their assistance after the mysterious attacks from white martians, the same who destroyed his entire race and he suspects they would do the same, green lantern joins the frame mentioning the unusual alien activities on earth. a full scale invasion occurs, they step in to stop them, but after defeating the leader, he tells that the martian genocide and the attack on earth were acts of mercy, when asked why he says something in martian before dying, the Flash asks what did he said and J'onn replies with one sentence: Darkseid is.
And that would be it for phase one, phase two would comprise with the sequels of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Justice League, but there will also be a movie about Suicide Squad and other about Nightwing. While Phase three would have Mister Miracle, Lobo and Omega Men after those THEN JUST THEN I would put the League against Darkseid. After that...i dunno.
and that would be my plan, pretty simple right?

Upcoming DC Movies: Full DCEU Release Date Calendar
https://ift.tt/3u2VfrU
The DC Extended Universe is in full swing! With a healthy schedule of upcoming DC movies in development, the DCEU isn’t going away anytime soon, and there’s still lots to look forward to.
So, it’s time to take a look at all of the DCEU superhero movies that will be released over the next few years. And trust us, there are a ton of them on the way, and we expect more details will be announced as we go forward. We have all the release dates for every one of ’em right here, as well as official details, the most interesting rumors, and suggestions for further reading where appropriate.
Thanks to HBO Max, The Suicide Squad is on schedule for August 2021, with The Batman, Aquaman 2, Black Adam, The Flash, and more due in 2022, . There’s a bright future for the newly revitalized DCEU movies!
Here’s how this works, because the schedule is getting a little weird. We’re starting with the DCEU movies that officially have release dates attached to them. Then we’ll get into the stuff that we know for 100% certain is in development, but that don’t have release dates yet. Then we’ll get into some of the long shots, the projects that are announced but quiet or seemingly dead, at the bottom.
Keep in mind that many of these are the CURRENT release dates as of this update, and all of these are subject to change. We’ll keep updating this with more information as we get it…
The Suicide Squad
Release date: Aug. 6, 2021
James Gunn (of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) has stepped in to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. This is now called The Suicide Squad, and it’s neither a reboot nor a straight sequel, but still firmly in the DCEU.
The cast is positively bonkers.
Returning from the first film we have Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, and of course Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn Scheduling issues forced Will Smith to bow out of the project as Deadshot.
But then that new cast is wild! John Cena is Peacemaker, with Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian will play Polka Dot Man. Daniela Melchor will play a new version of Batman villain Ratcatcher…and there’s more, including Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark! We have a full breakdown of the cast right here.
Pandemic be damned, this one arrives on HBO Max AND in theaters simultaneously, so that August release date isn’t going anywhere.
The Batman
Release date: March 4, 2022
The Batman solo movie has Matt Reeves as director. Robert Pattinson is the new Batman. Not only that, this movie will likely kick off a brand new trilogy of Batman movies. Expect a more low-key, detective focused approach to the Dark Knight than we’ve seen in previous movies.

In addition to Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Gordon. Jayme Lawson has a mystery role. Andy Serkis is Alfred Pennyworth. And then there are the villains to contend with! The Batman will feature an all-star rogues’ gallery of villains, with Paul Dano as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
DC League of Super Pets
Release date: May 20, 2022
OK, fine, this isn’t a DCEU movie project, and it’s an animated movie. But unless you have no soul, how can you resist Krypto, Streaky, Ace, Comet, and the rest of the amazing super pets?
And what an incredible voice cast this one boasts! Dwayne Johnson is Krypto, Kevin Hart is Ace, the Bat-Hound, with Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Jameela Jamil, and Keanu Reeves also along for the ride in undisclosed roles!
They had better be fighting the Brain Globes of Rambat in this movie, otherwise, we riot.
You can read more about DC Super Pets here.
Black Adam
Release date: July 29, 2022
Originally slated to be the villain of Shazam, Black Adam will instead be played by Dwayne Johnson in a solo movie. The character is certainly strong enough to sustain his own movie. Adam Sztykiel (Due Date, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul) is writing with Jaume Collet-Serra set to direct.

Black Adam Powers and Abilities Explained

This is the kind of thing that could work as a nifty prequel to further flesh out the mystical world of Shazam if they choose to go that route. More importantly, this movie will feature the DCEU introduction of the Justice Society of America, including Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher!
The Flash
Release Date: Nov. 4, 2022
Andy Muschietti (of Warner Bros’ IT movies) is the latest director to try and get The Flash movie to the screen. This project has had a really rough road. Christina Hodson, who clearly made the studio happy with her Birds of Prey script, is writing.

Ezra Miller will reprise his Justice League role as Barry Allen. Kiersey Clemons is Iris West. Ron Livingston will play Barry’s father, Dr. Henry Allen (replacing Billy Crudup who played the role in Justice League). But here’s where things get crazy…Ben Affleck will return to the role of Batman for this movie. And Michael Keaton will ALSO return to the role of Batman for this movie!
How is this possible? Because it’s based on the DC Comics Flashpoint story, which for the purposes of the movies will be used to create a big screen multiverse. Wow.
Oh, and it that’s not enough, this movie will introduce Supergirl to the DCEU, played by Sasha Calle!
Aquaman 2: Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom
Release Date: Dec. 16, 2022
After it made a billion dollars at the box office, you bet your trident that Aquaman 2 is happening! And it has a cool, suitably adventurous title: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Right now the plan is for James Wan to remain involved and start developing the movie, but he won’t decide whether or not to direct it until there’s a script in place. Fair enough. Patrick Wilson seems set to return, though, and of course, Jason Momoa will be back.
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods
Release date: June 2, 2023
Shazam 2 is now officially called Shazam: Fury of the Gods and…that’s about all we know about it right now.
One thing is for sure, though, this movie will retain the look, feel, and charm that made the first one so successful, since both director David F. Sandberg and writer Henry Gayden are returning. And this time we’ll have an entire Shazam family to help out, and they’ve got sharp new costumes!
It appears that the Shazam family will be taking on the Daughters of Atlas in this movie. Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and another currently unnamed character played by Rachel Zegler.
Wait…did we mention the Sinbad cameo? No, really!
Wonder Woman 3
Release date: TBD (likely 2024)
Patty Jenkins will reunite with Gal Gadot for what may be the capstone on the Wonder Woman movie trilogy. No details about Wonder Woman 3 are currently available, and that release date is likely to come in 2024, since Jenkins has her Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie to release for Christmas 2023.
Blue Beetle
Release Date: TBD
There’s a Blue Beetle movie in the works. And unlike the character potentially appearing in the Booster Gold movie (more on that down below), this one would focus on Jaime Reyes, the magical tech powered teenage hero who wields the scarab of original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) is writing the script, with Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) directing.
There’s no release date yet, but this is scheduled to begin production in fall 2021, so maybe we can pencil in a 2023 release date. This one may be destined for HBO Max, according to a recent report.
Batgirl
Release Date: TBD
Joss Whedon was originally supposed to write, direct, and produce the Batgirl movie, one that was reportedly based on Gail Simone’s recent New 52 take on the character. He has exited the project and now Christina Hodson is writing with Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah helming the project.
‘With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” Burr told THR. “Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy, which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”
Rumor has it that this will be a project set to go direct to HBO Max.
Untitled Superman Project
Release Date: TBD
Ta-Nehisi Coates is working on a Superman feature film with J.J. Abrams producing. No other info is currently available, but it appears to be a reboot.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates told Shadow and Act when the news was announced. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
Will this continue Henry Cavill’s time in the role, or will it take a new approach? Will this be a completely different take on the Man of Steel altogether? Time will tell!
Zatanna
Release Date: TBD
One of the most powerful magicians in the DC Universe is getting her own film, with a powerful writer attached. Emerald Fennell, who wrote and directed the brilliant Promising Young Woman has signed on to write a Zatanna movie for Warner Bros. No other details are available at this time, but you don’t sign an Oscar hopeful for a movie like this unless you’re serious about getting it moving.
Now, let’s get into the projects that are in the works, but haven’t had any movement in a while…
Supergirl
Oren Uziel is working on a script for a Supergirl movie. It’s not clear what kind of ties this will have to the currently dead Man of Steel franchise, especially given the uncertain state of Henry Cavill’s future as Superman.
But one thing is for sure, the DCEU does have their Supergirl! Sasha Calle will be introduced as Kara in The Flash movie, and presumably she’ll lead this one, as well.
Green Lantern Corps
Fairly or unfairly, Green Lantern has the most working against him. The 2011 film failed to kickstart the DC Universe as planned, and received a lukewarm (at best) critical and box-office reception. There are, of course, ways around this.

New Green Lantern Series Expands Cosmic DC Universe
By Jim Dandeneau
One way is to simply not make Hal Jordan the central Green Lantern of the movie. Thisone may focus on as many as three Green Lanterns, with the main focus on a kind of buddy/cop movie with John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Geoff Johns is writing the script, but there’s no director in place yet. There’s also the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern TV show to consider. It remains to be seen what (if any) connection that will have to this movie.
We have more details on the Green Lantern Corps movie right here.
Plastic Man
This one is a little further off in the future as all they’ve done is hire a writer. But there is definitely a Plastic Man movie in the works, with Amanda Idoko (ABC’s The Mayor) working on a screenplay. We have some more details on it right here.
Blackhawk
Steven Spielberg has long wanted to make a Blackhawk movie, and he’s finally going to get his wish. And if it was your wish to see Steven Spielberg direct a DC movie, you’re also in luck. David Koepp is writing the screenplay. We have more details on this one here.
Deathstroke
Joe Manganiello has long been cast as Slade Wilson, known to DC fans as Deathstroke. He even made a cameo in one of the Justice League theatrical post-credits scenes back when that was supposed to set up a Justice League 2 that never happened. But it turns out that the original version of that cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League was meant to set him up as the villain of The Batman solo movie (that is no longer the case),
Deathstroke was also once set to get a solo film, written and directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans. Despite Manganiello returning for a brief scene as Deathstroke in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it doesn’t seem likely that his solo film is happening anymore, which is a real shame as he would have been great in the role.
Nightwing
The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay has been tapped to direct a Nightwing movie. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is working on a script. No other details are currently available, and this one doesn’t have a release date yet. It appears to be dead, but McKay recently told us he’s still hoping to make this a reality.
Justice League Dark
At one time this was called Dark Universe, until Universal came along and ruined that name with their failed horror movie shared franchise. This one will feature the supernatural characters from the DC Universe. Characters like Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, Zatanna, and even John Constantine.
Guillermo del Toro was attached to this one for quite some time, but had to leave the project. Then it was Doug Liman. Now J.J. Abrams is involved as producer for what will likely be an HBO Max series.
And now for the long shots…projects mentioned, rumored, killed, or otherwise unlikely.
The New Gods
Ava DuVernay was set to direct a movie based on Jack Kirby‘s New Gods., but recently the project appears to have been killed by Warner Bros. No other details are currently available.
The New Gods is the story of two worlds, the warlike Apokolips and the peaceful New Genesis, each populated by immensely powerful beings with fantastic technology. Darkseid is the evil dictator of Apokolips, and he swaps sons with Highfather, the leader of New Genesis, and each child is raised on the opposite world. Darkseid’s son, Orion, becomes a troubled champion of New Genesis, while Highfather’s son (raised by Darkseid) revolts and becomes the super escape artist, Mister Miracle. This barely scratches the surface of what this movie is about. We tried to get into more detail about it here.
The Trench
Aquaman director James Wan and producer Peter Safran were working on developing other corners of Arthur Curry’s world, but Warner Bros. ended up killing the project. The Trench was to focus on the terrifying piranha-like beasts seen briefly in the first film, and would have been a smaller-scale, more horror-focused movie, and one that wouldn’t feature any of the main characters from Aquaman. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald wrote a script, but this appears to have been sunk.
Justice League 2
Justice League 2 isn’t likely to happen at the moment given how the first film underperformed at the box office. It once had a release date, but that long since evaporated. Still, “The Snyder Cut” generated considerable buzz on HBO Max, and featured a teaser scene that was very much meant as a preview for what the director was looking for in his dark vision of Justice League 2.
Man of Steel 2
Never officially announced, with no director or writer ever attached…another solo Superman movie starring Henry Cavill seems pretty unlikely at the moment. Especially considering that Henry Cavill appears to be finished as Superman, there’s an excellent Superman & Lois TV series on the air, and the aforementioned movie in the works from Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Cyborg
OK, to be perfectly honest, the Cyborg movie almost certainly isn’t happening. Ray Fisher made his first (very brief) appearance as Vic Stone/Cyborg in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and played a crucial role in Justice League. At one point he was supposed to feature in The Flash solo movie, too, but it’s not clear if that’s still the case.
Basically, though…let’s be completely real: this movie isn’t happening. There hasn’t been any movement on it in years, despite once having been assigned an April 3, 2020 release date. As far as we can tell there has been no additional movement on this movie in years. It’s probably dead. Too bad, since Ray Fisher was great in the role.
Harley Quinn
At one point there was another Harley Quinn movie in development! Whether this is a solo project or something else remains to be seen. Keep in mind that while very good, Birds of Prey didn’t set the world on fire at the box office, which means that Warner Bros. might be a little more wary than before about additional solo projects for Harley, even with Margot Robbie’s star power.
Ms. Robbie told us that there’s been no movement from the studio about Birds of Prey 2. However she also told us that she’s hoping to finally get Poison Ivy into the DCEU, so the pair can explore their relationship! We know we haven’t seen the last of the fantabulous Harley Quinn.
As for what shape this movie was supposed to take in the first place, your guess is as good as ours!
Gotham City Sirens
David Ayer is looking to direct a Harley Quinn and friends “girl gang” movie. Geneva Robertson-Dworet is writing, with Margot Robbie producing. It’s not clear where this stands on anybody’s priority list these days. Ayer has moved on to other projects, and as mentioned above, Birds of Prey wasn’t quite the financial success that Warner Bros. had hoped for. It’s possible that Gotham City Sirens has been put in a drawer for the time being.
Booster Gold
Flash and Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti is going to executive produce and possibly direct a Booster Gold movie. Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class) will write the script.

Joker: 6 Actors Who Have Played the Clown Prince of Crime
By David Crow
Early reports described this as a “superhero buddy cop movie” that would involve Blue Beetle. We’ll get you more updates on this as they become available, but keep in mind there hasn’t been any movement on this in a long time, and the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle movie is probably taking priority for the studio.
Deadshot
Warner Bros. knows they have one of the biggest stars in the world already in costume, so they’re reportedly considering a Deadshot solo movie, as well. But with Smith now having left Suicide Squad 2 this project seems like it may not ever materialize. Unless, of course, switching Idris Elba’s role (he was originally intended as Smith’s replacement as Floyd) means they’re keeping the door open for him down the road.
Lobo
The Lobo movie may attempt to be the DCEU movies’ equivalent of Deadpool. Jason Fuchs must have impressed Warner Bros. with his work on Wonder Woman, because he’s on board to write the script for this one. Michael Bay might direct. But with Lobo appearing on Krypton season 2 and a TV series for the character that had once been put into development (but is probably dead), this might be less of a priority for the studio now.
We have some more info on the project here.
Joker & Harley Quinn Movie
At one point there was yet another Joker-centric flick in the works. This one, a Joker and Harley Quinn movie is absolutely part of the DCEU movie continuity would pick up where Suicide Squad left off. There are currently no additional details available on this one, either. This probably won’t happen, however.
Warner Bros. is very happy with how their R-rated, out of continuity Joker movie performed both critically and commercially, and with Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar win, it’s a safe bet that they’re at least quietly hoping to make him their definitive Clown Prince of Crime for the foreseeable future…even though Joker was never intended to be part of the DCEU.
Not to be confused with…
Jared Leto Joker Movie
Honestly, we’re having trouble keeping track of all these, but yes, there was also yet another Joker solo movie in development focusing on Jared Leto’s version of the character in the works at one point. Apparently, this has long been canceled, but we’re keeping it here to be safe for a little longer.

We’ll keep updating this with more information about upcoming DC superhero movies as they get announced and information becomes available.
