August was too hot to live and weirdly stressful, so I've only got a handful of new stories plus a whole lot of my favorite tropes (so much amnesia!) and fic from fandoms I'm technically not in.

I Got My Head Checked by @frostbitebakery​ (Star Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan)

Below the observation deck, the Marshal Commander of the Third Systems Army is being divested of his armor and weapons, shackles heavy on his wrists. He doesn’t struggle, only a mulish stubborn twist to his jaw showing his displeasure at the situation.

Obi-Wan opens his eyes, steps back from the observation window. “I need a week.”

OR: In which Cody wasn’t trained for a Sith sliding into a moral dilemma because of him.

So apparently I AM weak for a Sith!AU when it's an amazing enemies-to-lovers with a redemption arc? Awesome story with beautiful art by the author. It's written in an unusual vignette format that might not be for everyone, but I thought it let the author cover a wide ensemble and scope of story and tonal shifts very effectively.

To the Letter by glimmerglanger (Star Wars, Cody/Obi-Wan)

“How you feeling, sir?” he asked, eyeing his General. They’d, at least, managed to all evac back to the shuttles without losing anyone, leaving the noxious-smelling laboratory where they’d found a pack of Seppy scientists working on new biological weapons behind.

“I’ll be fine, Commander,” Obi-Wan said, without opening his eyes, his voice thick and hoarse. “But comm ahead, would you, and make sure the medics are ready for me.”

OR, the one were Obi-Wan gets dosed with an especially nasty toxin, and Cody helps him survive the following hours.

The first chapter of this story was originally a standalone that I remember thinking was incredibly hot but emotionally unresolved, but glimmerglanger just posted a second chapter where Cody gets into a mirrored situation and it really balances out the whole piece.

I've already recced this by reblogging the fic notice, but it's so great! Plot and romance and feels all well-balanced and creative, with adorable kid content, plus I loved Lan Zhan's research into reconstructing musical cultivation, the modern cultivation worldbuilding generally, and the Lan brothers dynamic.

Exile by Marchling (Shadowhunters, Magnus/Alec)

Imogen Herondale hated Alec Lightwood.

Everyone from Jia Penhallow all the way through Jace himself knew of her animosity towards the person that she felt held her grandson back from the all that the Herondale name deserved. Despite this, Alec never thought she would actually move against him because to hurt him was to hurt Jace.

He had been wrong.

Now, Alec had no runes. His memories were gone. He had no idea who he was, why there was a ragged wound inside of him that he couldn't see or how he had gotten to this abandoned apartment in San Francisco.

All he knew was that monsters were tracking him and staying alive might take more strength than he had.

Technically all that I know about this fandom I got from a four-hour compilation of Malec clips I watched on YouTube, but this fic combined three of my very favorite tropes (amnesia, homelessness, framed/falsely accused) in one glorious h/c epic that just fucking came for my id. Loved it!

Body of Memory by glorious_spoon (Shadowhunters, Magnus/Alec)

After a patrol gone very wrong, Alec Lightwood comes to in the infirmary with no memory of the past three years, and that turns out to be just the beginning of his problems. There's an ominous plot afoot, a possible traitor at the Institute, and he's pretty sure that he ought to remember the handsome warlock who was waiting beside his bed when he woke up...

This is a great pairing for amnesia, because they had to work SO hard to get together, and their world changed so much in the process - so it's fun to temporarily reset one of them to zero and watch them fall in love all over again, hah. Fun casefile as well!

And you yourself shall keep the key of it by RubyCaspar (Miss Fisher, Jack/Phryne)

Jack is all set to follow Phryne until a bad accident in a raid leaves him with a serious head injury. When he wakes up, he can't remember anything of the last seventeen months, and as far as he's concerned, Miss Fisher is just that rather exasperating, eccentric lady who's interfered with two of his murder investigations.

Gorgeously cozy and soft h/c fic with a hefty dose of pining, just the way I like it.

OTHER

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot by laiqualaurelote (Miss Fisher, Jack/Phryne)

Across a harrowing three days, Jack talked Agent Foxtrot through an increasingly improbable series of escapades and was disobeyed by her a grand total of 117 times. Eventually they managed to fob off nuclear war without destroying any Unesco heritage sites, and then Jack went home and slept for fifteen hours and returned to his office feeling marginally closer to human, only to see perched on his desk an extraordinarily beautiful woman in a frock the colour of fresh blood, spinning the chamber of a shiny golden pistol.

The AU in which Phryne is a secret agent and Jack is her long-suffering handler.

I'm quite wary of modern AUs in this fandom, since Phryne is so much a product of her time and history, but this fic nailed it AND had spy shenanigans and that dynamic I love about this pairing where they've got trust and intimacy and friendship, and yet keep shying away from a relationship because of their issues (but they get there eventually).

Nor Any Drop by @philomytha​ (Biggles series, gen)

Blowing up the reservoir has more consequences than Biggles expected.

So I still have not read any of these books (yet), but this is a GREAT horror-thriller story set in WWI. Just sit back and enjoy these two being exceedingly honorable slashy undercover enemies (juggling five identities between them!) while trying to survive a terrifying supernatural threat.

What's In A Name? by flawedamythyst (Our Flag Means Death, Ed/Stede)

Captains Grey and Edwards, retired merchant sailors, moved to town a couple of years ago. Tom, the local pub landlord, has spent most of the time since trying to ignore the many, many things they do that directly contradict who they're claiming to be. Still, it's all worth it to have the protection of two legendary pirates for the town.

Sorry, not legendary pirates. Merchant captains. Who are just best friends and definitely nothing else.

Exceptionally cute look at a hypothetical retirement for them, from a charming outsider POV.

Finding Your Bliss by AirgiodSLV (Shadowhunters, Magnus/Alec)

On the pathway to Alexander Lightwood's advanced sexual enlightenment, Magnus starts simple. Or rather, he backpedals to simple, because Alec takes one look at the bedroom Magnus has transformed into a BDSM dream dungeon, turns around and walks right back out again.

My favorite kind of misunderstanding fic - i.e. they're communicating healthily but just coming from such different points that it takes them a while to work things out. Sexy, funny, great characterization.

Wangxian Shadowhunters AU #4

Set during the time of Wei Ying’s death. I am wildly mixing stuff here and have no idea what I’m doing. :) As always, I’m tagging these snippets ‘parabatai au’, and I welcome any prompts/questions.

"You should be glad to be rid of him, demon spawn that he was.”

Wangji’s fingers curled over the hilt of his Blade. He wasn’t sure what expression his face was showing, but Su She jerked back as if he’d been struck.

Good. It wasn’t enough, though, and he started forward. Not once in his life had Wangji lost control and struck someone in anger. This time, he was only stopped by Lan Xichen grasping his arm firmly. Wangji froze, for one moment considering pulling free.

His brother stopped him, however, by addressing the still-trembling Su She, “Leave. Now. You are no longer welcome in the Gusu Institute.”

There was no trace of Lan Xichen’s usual friendliness in his voice, and while Su She clenched his jaw mutinously, he backed away quickly. Wangji kept his eyes on him until he’d gone, before stiffly turning to face his brother. “Thank you.”

“No need, Wangji. Wei Wuxian might not have been my parabatai, but I loved him, too, you know. It doesn’t matter that Wen Ruohan was his biological father. Ah-Xian was family.”

Although it didn’t lessen the pain, which had become a constant companion, it did help, to know that he had Lan Xichen on his side. However, would he still look so warmly at Wangji if he knew just how his little brother loved his parabatai?

Swallowing, Wangji inclined is head towards Lan Xichen and turned to leave. Even with his parabatai dead, no one could ever know the truth. Not that Wangji minded whatever punishment he’d receive, but he couldn’t stand the thought of Wei Ying’s reputation, already strained after the revelation of his true paternity, being sullied further.

Wei Ying deserved to be remembered as the great Shadowhunter he had been, whose sacrifice at Nightless City had saved them all. Wangji’s parabatai.

sleeping 18 hours after being stressed is valid, after a panick attack i once slept like 16 hours simply because i was extremely exhausted.

i listened to the song and it's!!! so good!! i really like this part of the song: now you've faded, / with no traces, /so who could ever tell. / what you've taken's, / been misplaced / but your name doesn't ring any bells, / since the day that they took you to hell.

halsey is!!! i remember hearing badlands when it came out but i only really got into her mid 2018? i listened to hopeless fountain kingdom then and realized that badlands and hfk where both from the same person!! folklore is @/keepyourlife's fault, annika reblogged a bunch of things and just went crazy over it, so i listened to it. i don't listen to much else from taylor, i like getaway car a lot tho tbh. i saw mystery of love in a wangxian edit on youtube and went !!!!!! over that song, so now i'm obsessed with it.

1. i've got a bunch of favorite fics but _none of them are finished _and ajdkskks i do have some that are finished but i can't remember for the life of me what they're called. so here are five of my favorites: love, in fire and blood by cicer (which i'm recommending to all of my mutuals always) which is a 212K wip of immortal/yp!wwx + war prize au with no rpe/noncon but in the first two chapters lwj is afraid of that happening. it doesn't. then there is this time/universe/dimension travel fic called a song to bring you home by neoserenity, where basically canon!lwj who mourns wwx meets a modern!sick wwx and apparently there is no modern equivalent of lwj? or at least wwx doesn't seem to know one. the updates are sparse but i reread this so often in hopes that updates will appear. an arrow through time by syrus_jones is a young!lwj time traveling to post canon mdzs and pining after "husband" and wwx at the same time and feeling guilty over it bcs he doesn't know wwx is "husband" and then there is the murder of crows by cerbykerby which is a yilingwei sect au. here is a modern office au: hello, IT. have you tried turning it off and on again?* **by overmountainandmeadow, which us just really funny so i've been reading this for stress relief. i actually quote like time travel aus? also just wangxian meeting other versions of themselves is fun!! i have a bunch of modern college au tabs open but i don't actually seek them out, if i see one and like the plot then i'll read it. there are a lot of good time travel aus in this fandom!! also i like it when people get wangxian together earlier than in canon, it's just really fun to see how that would go. i don't remember the name but i think there was one fic where lwj tried to flirt with wwx and wwx just didn't notice? until somebody pointed it out to him i think? that was fun to read because lwj was just so frustrated!!

2. i feel like i forget what shows i watched after i watched them? movies too, though i like to stick to rewatching movies i already know. but here are some shows: dark on netflix, if you have netflix it should be there, it's a german netflix show about time travel and fate and things being really fucked up. basically there is this endless loop of the world apocalypse happening in 2019? 2020? i'm not that sure of the timeline rn but it's either 2019 or 2020!! and jonas, the male lead, wants to prevent it but this shit gets complicated because this is a time loop, everything he has done has been done before him. there are some really great quotes in the show about things, there is a wangxian gifset that actually uses a quote from dark, and that's the one about having three deaths. (i'll probably add a link to the gifset when i find it) also martha, the female lead, seems not that important in the first season but don't be fooled by that. the ending is.... complex and cool and holy shit there is still one thing we don't know and ahdkksks it's a surprise tho so 👀👀. i recommend watching it in german if possible and with subtitles. i've watched a few scenes in english and idk the voice actors don't seen to fit, but i don't know about other languages. the 100 is also a pretty good show but it's.... it has queerbaiting. and to be honest, the queerbaiting is probably the only reason the show made it to a seventh season. lexa, a lesbian, dies and they use her death for the queerbaiting since she gets together with clarke, the lead character. clarke is a character that gets a lot of hate from both fandom and the characters, a lot of unfair hate if you ask me. she has to do a lot of decisions that are just not meant to be for a single human being, @/solntserises and i and a lot of arguements over placing the blame on her or placing the blame on society and the situation itself. clarke basically does what she needs to do, what she needs to do in order to protect her people, her friends, her family. she often just doesn't have good options, and if she has then she deems the risk too high or something too good to be true (which, she often is right about???). after s1 her friends push her into situations where she has to make the hard choice, but if it doesn't work out how they want it to work out they get mad at her. which is not fair. i remember hearing that raven finally understands what clarke goes through in s7? but i haven't watched the season. i gave up the moment lexa died and didn't want to watch past it, but when @/solntserises started we watched the other seasons together.

there is also shadowhunters which is an okay show ig, i've watched vikings until s5 too and i quite liked it, prison break has a lot of cool stuff to offer but i'd be careful watching it in case of any triggers you might have. i don't remember 100% of the plot but enough to say that one of the characters is a pervert and an awful person, so lots of murder, a lot of blood and yeah. the two main characters are brothers and mostly innocent in this but yeah. they break out of a prison y'know.

lucifer is !!! i think it goes after dc comics? so ig it's somehow part of the dceu but they're like.... never mentioned so idk. it's really fun tho!! you probably have heard from the vampire diaries right? yeah well, there is a spin off called the origianls and it's actually really good. it had some times where i was going to call it off but it's fine, legacies is both tvd's and to's spinoff and from the quality it can't really compare, it's still fun to watch and seeing the new generation grow up. (also a lot more canon gays)

for some movies: i don't really watch many but i've watched every movie in the mcu so far, i have the extended special editions for both the lord of the rings and the hobbit trilogy, the half of it is about ellie chu, an asian girl living in a small town with her depressed dad and falling in love with aster flores, and just.... finding herself, finding out what she wants, who she is and trying to figure out where life takes her. the movie is great!! the romance process is really slow and not that much of the main focus, but more of ellie finding her place in the world? the old guard is a fantastic movie that i watched because of @/keiraknigthly, it's really fun to watch!!

Wangxian Shadowhunters AU #3

Some more, this time more cheerful post-battle aftercare. As always, I’m tagging these snippets ‘parabatai au’, and I welcome any prompts/questions. ;)

Wangji was going to murder Wei Ying. Just as soon as he could bring himself to let go of him.

“Breathe! Lan Zhan, can’t - breathe!” Wei Ying gasped, but he made no real effort to pull away, so Wangji didn’t see a reason to either. He did, however, at least loosen his grasp a little, and Wei Ying chuckled wetly against his neck. “Oh, you Lans and your arm strength. You could probably pull me back from death’s door by holding on with sheer force of will.”

“Not. Funny,” Wangji admonished him sternly, all too aware of how close he’d come to losing Wei Ying. “Wei Ying shouldn’t have gone of on his own. That’s not-”

“-how we work,” Wei Ying finished his sentence, as always completely attuned to Wangji’s train of thought. He now pulled away a little in order to be able to meet Wangji’s eyes. “Yes, I know, parabatai. I’m sorry, but there was a-”

“-child. And you saved her. Still, next time-”

“-I’ll wait for you, I promise.”

It was well-covered ground, so Wangji didn’t hold out much hope. As always, Wei Ying’s good intentions would only stick until the next time he saw someone in need of his help. It was part of what Wangji loved most about him, although it also drove him near-insane with frustration. They were parabatai, after all. They were supposed to fight side-by-side and protect each other, yet all too often Wangji had to chase after Wei Ying when the latter threw himself into danger unthinkingly.

Still, he saw no reason to re-open an argument almost as old as their friendship right now. He’d much rather revel in the fact that once again Wei Ying had survived, that he was still here, with him, mostly in one piece. Which reminded him:

“Let me,” he demanded, taking out his stele and rolling up Wei Ying’s sleeve.

Wei Ying rolled his eyes but only put up a token protest, “I already did that, you know.”

“Mn,” Wangji said noncommittally, activating Wei Ying’s iratze. “It’s stronger when I do it.”

“Sure, sure, go ahead, you worrywart!”

Wei Ying’s wrist was deceptively fragile in his grasp, and he could feel his parabatai’s pulse, beating strong and steady. His own heartbeat slowing until it was in sync with Wei Ying’s, the last of the worried tension Wangji had been holding dissolved under the weight of his parabatai’s brilliant smile, the warmth of his fondness washing over him through their bond.

The healing rune had long since taken effect, but Wangji didn’t let go and Wei Ying didn’t pull away.

Wangxian Shadowhunters AU #2

More Wangxian Shadowhunters!AU, this snippet from further down the line. I’ll be tagging anything I write in this ‘verse with ‘parabatai au’. Trigger warning for major character death & suicidal thoughts.

When the parabatai bond tore, the light that was Wei Ying’s soul extinguished, Wangji tried lying to himself. Tried telling himself that their bond was only hidden, suppressed by spells and wards. It had happened before, after all.

However, the agony that pierced him left no room for hope. Somewhere in the Nightless City Wei Ying had been killed.

His parabatai was dead, and Wangji had not been there to protect him. It was his worst nightmare come to life, and Wangji barely noticed his brother running to his side as his legs gave way under him. He crumpled into Xichen’s arms, heedless of the tears streaming down his face. There was nothing left of his usual composure, only pain and grief clawing at his throat.

He’d heard the stories, of course, of parabatai committing suicide in order to not be separated in death. He’d always thought they were legends, but now, with half of his soul simply gone, dark and empty, Wangji could understand them.

The only thing that stopped him from tearing himself out of his brother’s embrace and putting an end to this insufferable separation, was the determination to find Wei Ying’s body. He needed to see him laid to rest like a proper Shadowhunter, in the City of Bones.

What came after... Well, his Blade was sharp, and the Dead were patient.
