RM says that he too has changed. “I got used to being on-trend as I’ve been living in a milieu where being fashionable is important, but I don’t think I should keep on living like this. I don’t quite know how to do it, but I’ve started wanting to produce something long-lasting and timeless. I’m beginning to think about it a lot at this point — it’s been nearly nine years since I became a member of BTS.”

When I ask about the current direction of his lyrics, he answers in broad terms. “In the past,” he says, “I was bound by rules a great deal — like, ‘I should be doing this and that’ — and I was preoccupied with showing off certain techniques, etc. These days, however, I focus instead on creating a certain texture that I want to convey in a more abstract way. I’ve developed the ability to think in multisensory dimensions, incorporating visual as well as tactile elements. I take a holistic approach with the lyrics, melodies, beats and voices — all the elements of music.”

Anyone who has been following RM for a while knows that his answers are never one-dimensional. The steps he takes, the words he uses and the direction he takes are all carefully considered. His answer to the question, “Was the change of direction natural?” doesn’t disappoint, either. “The word ‘natural’ could refer to several turning points,” he says, “but it’s difficult to describe. I’ve spent time pondering what kind of adult I’m becoming. I’ve been learning to become more aware of my own rough outlines when it comes to choosing things I like and that are close to my heart. At first glance, it might seem like I’ve changed naturally, but on closer inspection, it’s something I’ve intentionally shaped. I went through painful periods, but looking back, it feels natural.”

There are several keywords that describe BTS, and they all apply to RM’s development as well. RM has been searching for his identity, a process which naturally led to the creation of music. He considers BTS to be a sort of miracle and believes their sincerity and dreams will prevail, touching the utopia deep within many of us and helping to make the world a better place, despite everything. “They say we need to concentrate on the present rather than pursuing our dreams,” he says. “I believe having a dream can be important. I hope there are others who still retain a little boy or a little girl in their hearts and continue to believe in old-fashioned values, such as hard work and hope. I often struggle as well. The expectations people have of me, and the pressure I put on myself, are too great. I imagine even if I work in a completely different field in the future, people will still expect me to accomplish something, and I might not be able to meet those expectations. I think I’m still going through the stage of creating a rough draft.” Dreams keep on making our hearts sing even when they are accused of being banal. RM’s dream is human after all. “I want to be recognized as someone other than a member of BTS, and I want to create other types of art,” he says. “I have many dreams, including the dream of living in the quiet countryside, where I can read and study. I’m very happy now, but I find the pace of life quite overwhelming. I want to find the right pace for myself someday.”

Notes on chapter 132, based on translations that are out.

-I like how Annie is written out on the character level. The chapter goes into detail considering her character motivations so far and why she decides to stay behind.

One thing I've noticed is people reducing Annie's character to her relationship with Armin now that it exists at all. It's like a knee-jerk reaction every time a female character ends up having a relationship with a male character. I understand it, stories tend to do that and I feel like the romantic element for Annie's and Armin's relationship is kind of out of nowhere myself, but this and the previous chapter clearly explore that Annie is tired of fighting after all of the fighting she has done and I think it makes sense for her as an individual character. It has nothing to do with Armin. Her main scenes in this chapter were actually with Mikasa and Reiner. It's a strange hyper-focus to me, I guess. It happens with Mikasa, too. You've got basically a good chunk of an arc focusing on the relationship between her and Armin with Eren doing his own thing (both Trost and Shiganshina), but she still only cares about Eren, I guess.

This is actually the first time Annie has considered her feelings and what she wants and that's good progress for a character that hates herself.

That said, having her back after 90 or so chapters and not having her actions matter that much here is wierd. The most I see as her plot importance right now is knocking sense into Reiner. I've seen people write the ship crew off already, but I can't help but feel they still might end up having more time and relevance because of paths or some other unforeseen circumstances. I think Gabi and Falco are in a similar situation, as well. If they don't, I think I will have a problem with Annie's involvement in the plot, but I think on a character level she's been handled just fine, even really solidly.

-I like that Floch dies with strong convictions and good intentions in mind. This is the most interesting aspect of Eren and the Yeagerists to me. They are doing this because they want to protect their country and people they love.

While people generally consider fascism as completely evil because of it's horrible methodology (as we also see in this series), the reason why it catches on during times of crisis is because it provides a clear and well-defined perspective within the chaos of the crisis and part of that is the element of saving the people (country) you love. This is a really important element of fascism and the reason why I'd rather not Eren be reduced to the standard villain, but still retain his nuance by the end. Evil is just as human and comes from just as human places as good and for us to not make the same mistakes, it is best to understand the mistakes on a human level and then learn from them, not just brush them off.

-I like Hange's death. It incorporates elements from both, Erwin's and Armin's, sacrifice. She went out there to make all of the deaths mean something and dedicated her heart one last time, which carried on Erwin's will till the end. The final scene of her among everyone is a wonderful callback to the soldiers who have followed the Survey Corps commanders around on their journey, from Erwin standing on the corpses of his comerades to both Erwin and Hange looking at their faces. It's good pathos in my eyes.

I think her farewell scene with Levi was really good for just how well it conveyed their relationship in a couple of gestures.

I've seen the final scene actually considered real and not symbolic of a job well done for Hange for the situation she was handed (which is what I think its narrative purpose was), which I personally think is one of the dumbest ideas I've seen around about the chapter because I think this is a pretty typical trope in war stories and AoT itself has used this stuff before at various points, with, as said, all the scenes with Erwin and Hange seeing their comerades.

But we also see stuff like Jean imagining him and the group of trainees being eaten by Titans before joining the Survey Corps just to convey a state of mind.

Erwin was not actually standing on those corpses, folks. It's all thematic imagery just like all of the animal stuff here and there. Hell, the people Hange knows less even have their backs turned to her.

If it is meant to be literal, it is extremely uncharacteristic of the story, but I feel if you know anything about visual storytelling and visual storytelling tropes, this is pretty typical.

I know there is also contention about Hange being the one to go out there and delay the Titans, but I don't think any of them would be able to do as much as Hange did alone here.

Onyakapon is obviously needed to fly the plane.

Reiner and Pieck would be pretty much useless in their Titan forms and we don't even know if Pieck can actually use the 3DMG, which is the more smarter option here to use over her tiny Titan form.

Connie and Jean going out there has nothing to do with their position in the story and their character arcs, while Hange is the one carrying the weight of the responsibility. Can you also really imagine Connie or Jean having the same competency taking down Titans as Hange, someone who has been doing it far longer than any of them?

Maybe Armin and Mikasa could. But that might leave the possibility of getting through to Eren off the table. I think what people also forget is that Eren still felt guilty when fighting them. Everyone Eren knows facing him might actually be a tactical advantage.

Hange does have a connection with Eren, but most of the group has a much stronger one with him than her.

Finally, there is Levi, who can't even stand up properly. I don't think he is fit enough to even hold off one Titan and as a result they would all be dead.

Outside of this group is also Annie, Yelena, Kiyomi and the two kids and only Annie feels the one equipped enough to take the distraction role.

But ultimately I think it's a thing of principle and character perspective.

Reiner and Annie can use the 3DMG in fairly skilled ways (they are higher ranked among the 104th), they have regenerative abilities and they are in a fairly good physical condition (though also probably much more exhausted than Hange). I think you could spin their character stories to fit this situation if you really wanted. Either of them could've gone to sacrifice themselves for the group to get away.

But Hange is the leader so she thinks she should take the responsibility. She straight-up says that she hasn't been a very efficent leader, so she views this as a redemption of sorts. Armin even offers to go instead of her.

You could paint it as plot convinience and be done with it, but just like Levi's decision to not inject Erwin, I think it makes sense on a character level and what Hange's character struggle has been about in this arc, even if it's not the most "logical" decision.

The other element that has contention related to Hange is that she passed the position of commander over to Armin.

In any other position, I would agree it to be Jean, but considering the context of going to fight Eren, I think Armin is fine and this to me is supported by the reasons Hange gives to appoint Armin as the commander.

Hange says that she appoints Armin because of his insight and courage.

The small detail that even if he's falling to pieces emotionally, he never actually runs away might be useful in the confrontation with Eren. Maybe he'll be overwhelmed and indecisive at points, which is why Jean could be more fitting, but ultimately he ends up at least facing the issue throughout however much turmoil.

While his ability to see the world through a more nuanced light and willingness to cooperate is not only a thematic way to contrast Eren and Armin (the former being stuck in his own perspective and the latter being willing to talk), his reasonings and wake-up calls might get through to Eren much more strongly because they have done so before, in Trost and in Shiganshina.

In any other situation I'd pick Jean, but here I think Armin is better or at the very least also a good option. It's not completely unreasonable.

I do not think this means any of the arcs of the characters are thrown under the bus. I feel everyone on the plane will get closure to their arcs. I think Jean's leadership ability will become relevant. I think Reiner's desire to be a hero will become relevant. I think Pieck's desire to fulfill her responsibility as a warrior will become relevant. I even think Connie's desire to kill Zeke will become relevant and finally so will Armin's and Mikasa's connection with Eren.

I'm much more worried about Zeke and Historia.

I think Historia is essential to make the thematic backbone of the story work. She's the first one among the Reiss to step up and break it. Why would she attempt to break the cycle by playing into it? I think Historia got another perspective of whatever Eren saw and might be working against that. Sadly it probably still involved letting Eren start the rumbling, but perhaps she found a way for it not to go all the way.

We know the oath of the First King is not actually a thing now because Ymir refused to comply, so who says Historia and paths Ymir can't have an encounter.

As a final note, I like the moment with Mikasa and Annie from Mikasa's perspective. The story opted to have Mikasa gain a more healthy perspective on Eren rather than complete independence from him and that can happen. You can go the independence route, but I think this works, too.

Relationships can change for the better and they can change for the worse.

All of this said, I think most of the content was nicely substantial and made sense, but that isn't the main issue I have with this chapter.

I think it has a pacing problem. Some scenes are just fine, but I feel some are a little too quick to have as much impact as I'd like them to have. Mainly Floch's and Hange's death scenes. The point behind them is good, but I think just a couple more pages of breathing room would've made this good chapter a great one.

I do think the anime giving this chapter just a little bit more time could definitely make it great and improve on the other ones where pace bothers me.

The process and completion of the dialogue box.

~ Hello there! Tokki here ~ Recently I completed the dialogue box asset, so I thought it'd be interesting to share what the very first prototype looked like! As well as share the concept art with you. The prototype was made in the quest to really jump into the game and then start developing it from there, it was a starting point. We knew we wanted our game to have dialogue and the ability to speak with different characters, so that's where we began. At first, I made a mock-up with it and then I provided Crisp with a blank version so that he could begin coding a dialogue system. It started off as green because that's both Crisp and I's favourite colour. The characters used for the demonstrations are currently my original characters, I'm using them as placeholders until we have official character portraits of our own characters. Tabitha was used at first, however, once a core aesthetic was decided Vivian made for a better placeholder visually. ( Thank you for your initial help though, Tabi! ) From then on, we started to discuss what kind of themes we wanted to have and what setting it would be in. After that, I started to have a lot of ideas in my head about what it would look like visually and decided on a specific, cohesive aesthetic. A victorian-inspired journal/diary. So I started to doodle until I fell in love with the look of something, and that's where the concept art was chosen as something to model off of. Part of my artistic process is working until I love what I've made, if I don't feel anything then it's not right yet. And if I've been working on it for a long time and I still feel nothing, I know it's time for me to change directions and try again. The chain was incorporated as part of an idea I had, where based upon the player's progress/relationship with the character they were speaking to, the chain would gradually weaken until it fell apart. It would have been to give the player a sense of progress, a reward for their work once it fell and a visual metaphor of the storyline. Ultimately, I decided that it was visually disruptive and based on the nature of a dialogue box, it would have just covered up the dialogue text. I think it was a neat idea, but I just didn't care for it and it would have posed a lot of problems. Honestly, though, I do much prefer how it looks without the chain. When I was working on creating the official, polished asset, I ended up adding some nice detailing on the golden frames as I wanted to give it a really unique character/style. If the story ends up in the direction that Crisp and I spoke of, the detailing will be visually representative of some of the story's concepts! At first, the assets did not have any shadows around them but I later added them to make them able to retain visual strength and not have any difficulty with the background art that was to be added in future. It shouldn't blend in, but it also shouldn't stand out. The shadows also helped to make sure everything was visually consistent as the selection boxes I later made also have them. ( Something I heard whilst researching UI was that what makes a good UI, in a way, is that it isn't noticeable at all. It should be so seamless and pleasant to interact with that it's something a player barely notices. ) I later took a ridiculous ( maybe to some ) amount of time deciding on the fonts. I'm very happy with the selection I made! I'm glad I spent so long on it, after all, I believe every single thing matters and adds to the visuals of a game. I believe that the right font can help make a game whilst the wrong one can help break it. ( I'm talking about you, comic sans. ) One font I really loved for the name title didn't have the right licences so unfortunately, I had to remove it and replace it with a different one. I wasn't sure about it at first but after I gave it some time, it grew on me! I really feel it adds to the victorian feel, I wanted to give the player the sense that they've 'been formally invited' to the location the game takes place in. I feel as though the nameplate feels like it honours the

characters that are speaking. Something about that pretty, gold, handwritten calligraphy feels special to me. I've been researching like my life depends on it, trying to learn as much as I can about UI design and UX and in my research, I came across a UI/UX designer that said there should be around 15-26 words per dialogue box because it's far easier on the reader. And it also allows the characters more chance to use different expressions alongside their dialogue. This totally opened my eyes as it was something I hadn't thought of before, and he's right! My prototypes were far too dialogue-heavy, so I resized the box to be smaller and that ended up making it look a lot more visually appealing, too. I was unsure about the character portrait sizes so I took a look at lots of visual novel games to see what they had done and I realised that my characters were scaled far too small. I personally didn't love the sizes that most games chose to go with, I find them to cover up too much of the screen, so I decided to go with my own in between. Not too big and not too small. The last thing I'd like to talk about is the indicator! After staring at our mock-ups intently for far too long, I couldn't help but feel as though something was missing like I could add one last thing to really perfect it. The cherry on top. And then it occurred to me that we're going to use an indicator to indicate that the dialogue is finished and you can click to see the next dialogue. So I played around with it for a bit and then I had the perfect idea! A quill!! What better way to add to the visuals of the dialogue box than to make the indicator a feather quill. I'm ridiculously in love with this detail and think it's the best idea I've had so far, haha. Sorry to write such a long post, but this is the first update I have and a lot ( not a ton but a significant amount ) has happened since the game's inception. My next updates should be a lot shorter, I just wanted to take you through the process and progress of how we've gotten to the place we are now. One thing I'd like to mention though is how important these small things are to me. I really truly believe that every single detail is incredibly important and that's why I take it all equally as seriously as I would with any other aspect of the game. I believe it all adds up eventually. If every single thing shines as an individual, the whole thing can shine together to make something beautiful. Every single thing is part of the game, so every single thing should be treated with care. I want that to show. I want the player to be able to look at this game and see straight away that a lot of love and effort went into it. after a long battle with my reader’s block this is the first fic that I finished in one go and I found myself falling in love with reading again and I may have fallen for werewolves and warlocks too along the way. anyways, I highly suggest you listen to Walk Through the Fire by Zayde Wolf ft. Ruelle before you start reading to set the mood, also, if you aren’t familiar with Howl’s Moving Castle (well I highly suggest you read/watch this because this is gold!) you could google Howl Jenkins Pendragon to have an idea of Taehyung’s visual inspiration for this fic.

[SPOILERS AHEAD - this is me telling this story to my close friends, this is how i chat them my latest reads, in detail with a lot of inserts in between gasdhjgfakjs also rip this is an essay it’s been awhile since i shared my thoughts~]

I shouldn’t be babbling like this since this is an on-going story but whatever I’m so in love with this so please bear with me, I actually had this fic saved on my reader for weeks, found this one fateful night when I was craving to hurt my heart with an infidelity fic so I browsed and filtered ao3 results and got this and last night I clicked the title because I assumed this is inspired by Zayde Wolf’s song (which I fell for because of a zombie fic that had this on it’s playlist) and I devoured this like a starved woman and I ~

so this actually escalates quickly from Jungkook and MC’s first meeting filled with some bicker and banter,  to meeting Namjoon and Jungkook while she’s with her best friend Jisoo well MC is not afraid of the supernatural so they wanted to test her how she’ll react to Jungkook’s true form and she’s up for it and then everything happened all at once, in that moment Jungkook found comfort in her, she was her mate...

so this is where it’ll start to hurt and I kinda understand and not understand Jungkook’s logic here maybe it’s because he’s a wolf? or his prior experiences with other human’s changed him? the lack of sexual intimacy started all of this mess, If only Jungkook tested the waters and tried talking to MC if she wants to do it and they could take it slow but also he’s a supernatural, a wolf, and he’ll most likely lose control once he gets to have a taste of her and it’s probably one of his concerns that’s why instead of mating with her and marking her he decided to spend the night with wolves from his own pack, srsly my heart dropped when she saw what’s happening in his bedroom, she was ready to seduce him and step up her game BUT no he was fucking cheating on her, I get that he’s in heat and it’ll be wild and he’ll probably hurt MC but whyyyy Jungkook? after reading that scene I knew I would hate him...

hate is a strong word but that’s how I felt and I just wish somebody would find and save her, based on the tags I made up scenarios in my head, I had no clue about Taehyung being a warlock so I was kinda hoping he’s a human that’ll sweep her off her feet BUT the scenario that followed was much better and adds so much *chef’s kiss* flavor to the story, so Taehyung is a warlock, like Howl Jenkins Pendragon (well he’s a wizard dealing with general/good magic while warlocks are associated with black/dark magic yet Tae is vv chill so far~), my favorite studio ghibli character, I was so ecstatic reading his description plus a few elements from the story/movie were also incorporated into the story that’s why i’m so so so happy, so fast forward to MC waking up in Taehyung’s place (I actually forgot to mention I was kinda relieved that Irene and Bo Young didn’t tell Jungkook the whole story [for added drama yasss!] but I guess if he really care about her he would’ve felt it in him that she’s somewhere and he needs to do everything in his power to seek her and not just let his guilt eat him while he fucks his lust, sigh Jungkook you fucked up badly, wait til...) so this is where you’ll start to fall for Taehyung (because that’s what happened to me) everything they did made my heart flutter it was just some flirting here and there and genuine concern from Taehyung wanting to help MC regain her memories, again, I was a little embarrassed and hurt for MC when she told Tae  “What if I want to touch you?” and got a response “You’ll just have to resist,” poor babe she just wants to feel something ~ idk how warlocks are in fics during sex maybe they’re dangerous too that’s why Taehyung is trying his best to resist and ignore her flirting whenever it gets too much he wants to give in.

now that readers like me have fallen for Taehyung and was hoping for a better future for MC ~ hmmm just a random thought wouldn’t it be nice to lose your memories when your partner cheats on you? and they still have every single detail of the horrible things they’ve done while your mind is free of pain, you get to retain the feeling and lessons learned but you have no clue what life experience brought you that wisdom, ahhh beautiful, I love when people suffer and pay for their sins.~ Namjoon suddenly shows up and does everything to take MC back to Jungkook and he fails then tells him everything and now he just wants to find her, still shocked that if she really was her mate and loves her ughhh he’d get the feeling that she’s still alive unless Taehyung had some protective spell cast on her while he helps her get better? idk my mind is filled with so many questions and possibilities and i’m suffering.

Chapter #3 so this is how it goes huh? she reunites with her best friend that helps her reunite with her “boyfriend” ngl I was hoping she’d be able to spend more time with Taehyung, that he will take her and fulfill his words “Then you can continue being my Love.” I want her to be happy with Taehyung, she belongs with him, that’s why things happened and Jungkook failed to mark her because he was busy with marking others ughhh, okay I appreciate Jungkook’s gesture and sincerity to make it up to her but once her memories come rushing back things will never be the same, it’ll only prove her that her feelings were right, being with Taehyung, that’s what’s right. but since we're only 3 chapters in i’m looking forward to having our hearts swayed back in forth into Jungkook then Taehyung and back to Jungkook and rolling and jumping back to Taehyung until we’re perpetually torn and confused. 

I just want to be back in Taehyung’s arms (that’s the immersive me talking) | 🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒

Quick Take: Audiovector R 3 Arreté & SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté

After moving to a much larger living space last summer, it became apparent that my fondness for large-scale orchestral music combined with the volume of my listening area (a 26’/8m long open space with 12’/3.7m ceilings) were going to be an insurmountable challenge for my current speakers, a rotation of the Silverline SR17 Supreme and Audiovector SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté. They actually both do an admirable job - the Silverline has the body and tone of a much larger speaker, and the little Audiovector is shockingly capable of energizing the space. But physics are physics, and as they say in the car business there’s no replacement for displacement. One simply needs to move more air in a larger room. And thus I’ve been on the hunt for a bigger, full-range speaker that can retain the virtues of my beloved monitors - the speed, the focus, the purity and lack of distractions - which is no easy feat, and generally requires a considerable jump in budget. There are many big speakers under $10k that can play plenty loud but in my experience they give up too much in the process. Which leads me to these two contenders from Audiovector, a brand that I discovered only a couple years ago but immediately latched onto. Could they deliver the big sound I was seeking without compromise? I took advantage of a work trip to California to visit the crew at Audiovision SF and give them a listen.

The Audiovector R Series

I was excited to see Audiovector announce a big update to their “SR” line last fall, with the SR 3 floorstander, SR 1 bookshelf, SR C center channel and SR S subwoofer all transitioned to “R” models. (I admit, I was also a little crestfallen given I had recently purchased an SR myself, but c’est la vie). Similar to in the car industry where technologies from concept and flagship cars trickle their way down to models you and I can afford, the R series incorporates ideas and learnings from Audiovector’s most recent top models - the R 11, R 8 and SR 6. Visually the differences are fairly subtle - they retain the same proportions and “boat” cabinet and sport the same basic driver complements - but look more closely and there are actually too many changes to enumerate here. Some highlights to me:

The Arreté models boast a number of features taken straight from the flagship R 8: their latest-and-greatest AMT tweeter; a carbon-fiber back plate to eliminate interactions with crossover magnetic fields; and “Freedom Grounding,” which purports to reduce distortion by grounding the driver frames directly to earth via a dedicated cable.

The woofer has a new cone material, still utilizing carbon fiber but sandwiched with an artificial wood resin, giving it a distinctly glossier finish.

While the enclosure looks nearly identical, it’s said to be a new construction that’s measurably stronger and more inert.

So why isn’t there an R 6? I have an email out to Audiovector CEO Mads Klifoth about this, but Antonio @ Audiovision thinks it’s probably a few years away, as the SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté was updated a couple years ago to a 2.0 version that incorporated some of the technologies that made it into the R line, and being a much more complex design it’ll take some time to improve on it with the latest tricks. This gave me a bit of pause considering a purchase now, but as you’ll read later the SR 6 remains plenty compelling in the here and now.

The Setup

My previous demos of Audiovectors at the shop utilized a Chord DAVE DAC feeding either Chord or Naim electronics wired with Nordost. This audition retained the DAVE, but with an interesting new wrinkle - a Gryphon Diablo 300 integrated amp (USD $16,000) wired with Audience FrontRow cables. I was pretty excited to hear the Gryphon as I’d read great things about it, and their mega-buck systems at shows always impressed. (Incidentally, I hear after pairing with Naim for many years, Audiovector now demos with Gryphon a lot in the EU.)

The Diablo integrated impressed, combining unflappable grip and composure with musical body and flow. Plenty of high-end integrateds claim to be as good as separates, but more often than not you're still left with a nagging feeling of compromise, often in terms of the range of dynamic and tonal color, the scale of the presentation and the blackness of backgrounds. The Diablo's performance in these areas was stellar and up there with some of the better separates I've heard. I could hear just a trace of that Gryphon darkness I've heard at shows - not a lack of brilliance or extension, but a very slightly chocolatey midrange and darkened soundstage that’s quite nice if a slight deviation from neutral. And while I hadn’t heard the Audience FrontRow cables before, I’m intimately familiar with their sibling, the Au24 SX line which are my current reference cables. I heard the purity and naturalness I’ve come to expect from top-flight Audience wire, and they seemed to take off a trace of the edge I’d heard prior with the very detailed Nordost cables. I would call this a substantial upgrade (or at least one more suited to my tastes) from the previous front-end, having a deep, organic presentation with lifelike scale that was immersive. From the first notes, I could tell this was going to be a good session.

Listening to the R 3 Arreté (USD $9,999)

I nestled in the GamuT Lobster chair and got a good hour or so listening to my usual assortment of tracks via Tidal/Qoboz streaming - Magdalena Kozena Mozart Arias, Lisa Batiasvilli Prokofiev Concertos, Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals for two pianos and ensemble, Mahler Das Lied von der Erde, Francois Leleux Telemann oboe solos and some Ella Fitzgerald and Carly Rae Jepsen thrown in for good measure. I was most interested in that new resin/fiber mid-woofer, said to be more detailed and articulate than the outgoing unit. The carbon fiber unit in my SR 1 Avantgarde Arreté is clean to extreme but just slightly dry, so I was hoping for a bit more body and resonance with voices and orchestral instruments. 

Quick impressions:

The new woofer definitely has a subtly different tone, sounding less dry and bringing out tonal complexities better. It’s just as fast but it supports the leading edges better with a bit more body. It also sounds better damped, taking off a bit of crispness in the upper midrange that can sometimes be heard in the old unit. This really helps out bring out more of the beauty of vocals and wind instruments. 

The tweeter is a similar upgrade, being slightly sweeter and more articulate. It too also sounds a tad less dry, giving flutes a bit more fluidity and harmonic fullness.

The updated drivers and cabinet, as well as the Freedom Grounding system, make the speaker sound exceedingly free of distracting distortions and noises, even more so than the SR series.

The slight dip in the crossover region around 2.8kHz that both @mgd-taww​ and I have heard in the SR 1 (and that I have measured in my SR 1) seems a bit smoother in the R 3.

The bass was huge for a speaker of this size - it could really pound out a full orchestra and bass guitar line with weight and gusto.

Overall the midrange was more relaxed and expansive than what I heard from the prior SR 3 model (the hyper-tweaked Avantgarde Arreté Raw), with a similar fullness in the mid-bass but noticeably stronger output at the bottom end and a much bigger overall presentation. Antonio described it as an evolutionary upgrade over the SR 3, but I felt the many little changes added up to a substantial shift (and improvement) in the overall presentation. It sounds less uptight and clinical than the old model without losing the trademark Audivector speed and incisiveness.

So all in all, a very nice upgrade that makes me excited for how the R 1 would improve on my SR 1. But was I sold? This is where things get a little tricky... the R 3 is no doubt a compelling speaker - fast, detailed, polished and packing a big punch. But similar to when I auditioned the SR 3 before deciding on my smaller SR 1, I felt I heard some trade-offs of adding an extra woofer and larger cabinet to a super precise monitor design. The SR 3’s slight loss of lower midrange clarity vs. the SR 1 is still there with the R 3 - it sounds bigger and fuller, but not as tightly focused. While the extra bottom end is great and results in a much more complete tonal balance, to my ears tones below 250Hz (where the extra woofer kicks in) didn’t quite seem to match the blazing speed of the midrange on up. I liked a lot about the R 3, but I wanted it all, without any compromise whatsoever.

And so...

The SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté (USD $24,999)

Antonio listened to my assessment, and suggested the big-brother SR 6 might hold the answer. At 2.5x the price, it wasn’t originally on my list, but as he had them all set up behind the R 3’s I figured what harm could come from giving them a listen... (famous last words)

Wow. I had heard the SR 6 before, when Mads Klifoth demo’ed them on a visit to the store, but this was my first time sitting down for a serious audition. And it became immediately clear what happens when you give a top-notch designer and firm more than double the budget to build a full range speaker. It had all the speed and purity that I loved of my SR 1, but with even more clarity and resolving power. It then took that speed, and extended it all the way down the frequency spectrum. Every instrument in the orchestra, from the celli to the clarinets to timpani, had the same startling presence and completeness of tone. This is probably the closest I’ve come to feeling like I had the speaker wires plugged directly into my ears.

The weight and scale was impressive, but what really shocked me was listening to Francois Leleux’s solo oboe. The recording is nothing remarkable, made in a church by a small label. But for the first time, I could clearly make out precisely where Leleux’s long tapered notes ended, and where the echo of the church began. It was uncanny, and I had to bring my wife, an oboist, in for a listen the next day. She observed the same: “Wow, it’s so clear. I can hear all his breathing and where his notes begin and end. And I can also now hear all this extra nuance and phrasing in his playing. Dammit.” (She’s always hard on herself when she hears what the best musicians in the world can do with their instruments.) We moved on to the slow movement from Brahms Symphony No. 1 (Berlin Philarmonic/Rattle), a recording we know inside out, and she noted how she had never heard the orchestra with such realistic weight and size, and how this changed the entire balance of the recording to be far more realistic, as you’d hear it in the hall (as in, harder to hear the oboe solo!). She listened some more, and despite knowing the hefty price tag, she couldn’t help but remark “this is really nice...”

And just to make sure it could have fun, I pulled up Carly Rae Jepsen’s Julien (from Dedicated) and heard the track as I’ve never heard it before. The SR 6 sucked me into a soundscape so vivid, it felt like I was being pulled inside the mix, rather than listening to it from the outside. I was engaged, stimulated, bouncing around in my chair. This speaker (not to mention the rest of the system) can definitely boogie, and I could have happily sat there for the rest of the week going through all my favorite tracks.

So, yeah, a $25k speaker model sounds better than the $10k one. Shocking. But it was a clear illustration of how at a certain point with high-end reproduction, you just need to expend a lot more money to get to the next level of realism. It’s diminishing returns for sure, but how sweet those returns are.

It did leave me wondering what an R 6 with the new woofer and all the latest trimmings could sound like. The SR 6 better integrates its midrange with the woofer than the R 3, but it has just a hair of the same dryness that the new resin woofer in the R 3 ameliorates. Not to over-generalize, and a clever designer can massage away much of this, but the material of a cone tends to impart its distinct texture to the sound - untreated paper can sound dry and papery, plastic woofers tend to be plasticky and mushy (examples: early Devore speakers, countless monitors from the ‘90s using the Seas polypropylene cones), metal can be hard and ring-ey, etc. Treated paper tends to be a nice compromise by damping the break-up modes, carbon fiber can also be good (example: Role Audio speakers) but can lean a little dry and mechanical. Dynaudio was onto something when they developed their magnesium-silicate-polymer (MSP) cone - they’re distinctly less dry than paper and carbon fiber, while being much faster and crisper than plain poly cones, and are used to great effect in their Esotec woofers (Example: Silverline SR17, and of course Dynaudio’s own line). I would say the carbon fiber woofer in the SR series is just a tad on the dry side, while the new resin version moves it about halfway between the old woofer and Dynaudio Esotec without sacrificing speed, which to my ears is a very nice place to be. That said, the SR 6 is a considerably more refined speaker than the R 3 and the overall completeness of the design far outweighs the nuances of the driver material. I think I read online somewhere that the R 3 could now give the SR 6 a run for its money; my experience most definitely did not concur with that assessment!

So to sum up: the new R series’s numerous tweaks seem to make an appreciable difference in character and musicality, the R 3 Arreté is impressively fluid and big-sounding, and the SR 6 Avantgarde Arreté is still a killer speaker in its current form... so much so that it’s jumped to the top of my list of potential reference speakers for my new room. I’ve got my eyes and ears on it...

Distinctive Visual and Behavioral Theme: The Watermen all wear stereotypical yellow hats and raincoats, often with some sea-beast trophy. While they make an effort to care for the Tidewater Expanse, there are many who backslide into overfishing.

Faction 2: The Proven (The Obviously Evil (But Partially Justified?) One)

Leader: Jack Utsumi, a severe-looking and internally tortured scientist

Goal: To utilize the technology of Edgewood (see below) to bring order to the land and possibly restore it to its former glory. Utsumi doesn't want conflict, but many of his henchpeople do.

Distinctive Visual and Behavioral Theme: The Proven are very clean-cut, and enjoy white garb and well-maintained equipment. They incorporate the Brotherhood of Steel's tech thing, but with a less shiny aesthetic than regular Fallout: their tech is black, boxy, and flat, with a somewhat ENIAC switchboard look. The Proven aren't xenophobic, but they do buy heavily into the myth of "make it on your own", ignoring that they're the ones who found all the fancy toys.

Faction 3: The Hons (The Amoral But Not Necessarily Evil One)

Leader: Attila the Hon, a powerful, motherly woman with a scarred face, stilted way of speaking, and flamboyant feathered overcoat

Goal: To make the world a safe space for arts and performance

Distinctive Visual and Behavioral Theme: Think Baltimore "Hon" culture meets old sword-and-sandal films. They employ press-on claw gauntlets, detachable beehive hairdos filled with angry bees, and floral-patterned lorica armor. As previously mentioned, they ride pinkclaws.

Faction 4: The Criers (Actually Interesting Fourth Choice)

Leader: Mr. Raven, a ghoul and former Edgar Allan Poe reenactor, who tries to use "Nevermore" at any opportunity he can get

Goal: To remember history that would otherwise be forgotten

Distinctive Visual and Behavioral Theme: The Criers dress like a mishmash of historical periods, having been cobbled together relics from historical reenactment societies. They research the history of the Tidewater Expanse, both before and after the Great War. Many of them stay permanently in character.

Companions

Male Unaffiliated Companion: Carl Cramer is the smiling-crab-logo-shirted proprietor of the Crab Mart, the convenience store in the Cape (see below). He can be convinced to come adventuring with you to give the Crab Mart a proper mail-order service. He has no fear, but also no sense of self-preservation, and his morality is heavily centered around whether or not people will be able to acquire snacks and household goods with ease and efficiency.

Female Unaffiliated Companion: Ori Paimana, a tall and friendly woman who runs the Cape Marina, and is perhaps overly eager to talk to you about spears, harpoons, and other implements of pointy death. She makes a mean clam chowder. She can be convinced to come adventuring with you to cover any perceived ineptitude with boats or fear of bay monsters.

Robot Companion: Joanna, a synth who wants to leave Kent (see below) behind and find her own way in the world.

Canine Companion: Dwayyo, a loner, a rambler, a rogue, a Captain Ahab with a twinkle in their eye and significantly better intentions than Ahab. Dwayyo is a humanoid dog-thing on the trail of Schnell Geist (see below); think the Kate Beaton "Nemesis" comics.

Third Nonhuman Companion: Dr. Dinky is a landlurk and a skilled science educator. He is also extremely small and frequently falls on his back. It is implied that he is centuries old and can remember his life before the Great War. (There is a real Dinky, a denizen of the education center at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD.)

Evil Companion: vehicle and weapons dealer Big Bill Hell isn't a bad person, necessarily. However, he is incredibly foul-mouthed, claims that he'll fuck the spouses of people he dislikes, and will cheat you out of every cent you've got. Has a horrifying "Challenge Pissing" attack.

Faction 1 Companion: Barnacle Billie, an ecologist working for the Watermen. She may or may not have deliberately become a loxo zombie in an ill-thought-out if effective attempt to transition.

Faction 2 Companion: Babs Eldridge, a computer programmer with the Proven. She has a mother and a sister to provide for, and wants them to be safe.

Faction 3 Companion: Sweet Sal, a beehive-sporting protectron who talks in a LARGE, HAMMY VOICE about GLORIOUS COMBAT. May harbor a crush on the Reporter.

Faction 4 Companion: Samuel Smythe, a minuteman with the Criers who fights with an oversized town crier's bell, and loves the idea of spreading news to the Tidewater Expanse.

Other NPCs:

Violetta Vaughn, one of the Criers in Naptown, who's trying to build airships to ease travel in the area.

Schnell Geist, a giant albino Snallygoster. Reputedly intelligent, Schnell Geist is the Moby Dick of the area.

Natty Boh, the flamboyant, one-eyed mayor of More, and Domino, his hulking assaultron bodyguard. Mayor Boh is head-over-heels in love with local desalination plant owner Ms. Utz, but is absolutely terrible at words, leaving Domino to play the Cyrano.

Locations:

Starting Town: the Cape (Cape Saint Claire, an Annapolis suburb). The Cape's primary conflict is a Hatfields-and-McCoys-esque conflict between two families whose initial conflict is implied to have been competing soccer moms.

Small Town 1: the Glen (Glen Burnie). Here you'll meet the Proven, accused (in one case rightly) of atrocities by some local Watermen. There's also a collection of Criers trying to focus on exploring the ruins of BWI.

Small Town 2: Kent (Kent Island). Kent is a Stepford Wives-esque community, with synths (some of whom don't know they're synths) turning out cheerful, idyllic trinkets for people using what remains of the island as a stop on the water routes.

The Big City: More (Baltimore). More is the bustling metropolis, and the trade hub and entertainment center of the Tidewater Expanse. It is the headquarters of the Hons, and where you meet Sweet Sal, as well as Big Bill Hell.

The Less Big City: Naptown (Annapolis). Naptown is abuzz with activity from the Criers, looking to recover historic items, and home to some very good crab places. You'll meet Barnacle Billie here.

The Sketchy City: Edgewood (Aberdeen Proving Ground). Edgewood is full of weapons dealers, mercenaries, and folk seeking to plunder the stores of the Aberdeen Proving Ground. You'll meet Babs Eldridge, and the rest of the Proven, here. The Proven look down upon the rabble of Edgewood.

Faction 1 Headquarters: The Academy, formerly the Naval Academy and now repurposed as the largely pacifist and scientific academy of the Watermen.

Faction 2 Headquarters: the Arsenal, a former army compound near Edgewood.

Faction 3 Headquarters: Hon Street, an enclave located within More, patrolled by pinkclaws and actually a nice, if very loud, place to live.

Faction 4 Headquarters: the Historic London Town and Gardens, remarkably well-preserved.

Scary Sidequest Dungeon: Druid Ridge. A drowned catacomb beneath the former cemetery. Something haunts it. Something powerful and monstrous. Something that you'd mistake for the statuary. Something artificial that came back to its namesake's old resting place…

Funny Sidequest Dungeon: The Maryland State House, final goal of a National Treasure-esque mission the Criers send you on. Its puzzles are … pretty dang goofy.

Tedious and Enormous Sidequest Dungeon: Crabcracker Cove. A giant mirelurk nest where you have to collect samples from every single mirelurk you kill. It takes a long-ass while to get them out.

Super Weird Sidequest Dungeon: Long Bridge. A covered bridge in the north that is far bigger, far darker, and takes far longer to cross than by rights it should. Contains the holographic ghosts and ghost people from Dead Money, way too many crying baby noises, and a Goatman.

The Obligatory Vault: Vault 18. Vault 18 was designed to protect the culinary knowledge of the world, and taught its denizens to treat recipes with ritual importance. Its denizens wear yellow metal armor and plague doctor masks filled with 18 sacred herbs and spices.

Inclusivity in the Classroom

Inclusivity in the Classroom

 Throughout my college experience in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, I’ve managed to work towards becoming an English teacher. Now that I’m close to reaching my degree with only a semester remaining, I wanted to start thinking of the kind of classroom I would like to create as well as what I expected my teaching philosophy to be like. It is to be expected that anyone studying to become a teacher would want to be a good teacher and form a nice environment for the students, but what defines a “good” teacher and a “nice” environment?  My ideal classroom would be inclusive for all students, regardless of any disabilities a student may have. In order to create the ideal environment, I’d take into consideration each student in order to allow all students to have equal opportunities. I decided to look into ways that inclusivity could be incorporated within a classroom especially for students with disabilities. I also asked a person who has disabilities questions based on inclusivity and reflecting his personal school experience in comparison with how I would want my future classroom to be like.  My focus was on how I could potentially create my own inclusive classroom regardless of any disabilities a student may have.

Inclusivity

In order to form an inclusive classroom it is important to understand the intended goal of inclusivity, The purpose of being inclusive is to allow all students to feel they are all equal and are being offered the help and resources available to allow everyone to be treated the same. When it comes to disabilities, there are important things to keep in mind. It is important to keep in mind the People First Language which discusses the appropriate way to talk about a person with disabilities. It is more appropriate to say the person with disabilities instead of the disabled person. The focus should be on the person not the disability a person may have.  Since I’m planning on teaching, I want to provide an inclusive setting to all my students. Apart from getting all students to coexist without issues due to any disabilities, I want to be able to provide a comfortable setting that allows all students to participate.

Tips on How to Create an Inclusive Classroom

 Marla Lohman created a blog titled “Preparing Young Children for the Inclusion of Children with Disabilities into the Classroom” and includes a list of helpful tips that I found useful and important to keep in mind when dealing with inclusivity. Some of the tips included in the article were:

·         Give all children tools for interactions and conversations. Provide them with toys or objects to initiate the discussion (an example might include a popular book).

·         Use a variety of methods for instruction—talk to your students, illustrate with pictures, model, and provide the opportunity for hands-on learning whenever possible.

·         . Provide a visual classroom schedule so that all children know the plan for the day.

·         Have high expectations for all children, regardless of their ability levels. (Lohmann)

I decided to talk about these tips during an interview with an old friend that I met in high school who had a hearing disability, being partially deaf, as well as a learning impediment. He relies more on reading or having loud conversations in order to process the communication well. He also gets distracted easily and has problems not only with concentration but retaining information if he isn’t interviewed. For privacy purposes I will be calling him by his initials, M.G. After discussing the tip, I will be including his responses it in order to see if he feels they could be helpful.

 Since I am planning on teaching older students, I’d want to include literature to include diversity. Prater is the author of the article “Using Juvenile Literature with Portrayals of Disabilities in Your Classroom” and discusses the use of including literature with people with disabilities.  He includes that, “Doing so provides an avenue for teaching about disabling conditions, as well as exposing students to characters with disabilities within the context of a well-written story.”(Prater) Article itself asks what books that include disabilities the reader knew. I was limited with my answer, only being able to answer The Fault in Our Stars or Little House on the Prairie. This article is important for me as a future professor because it includes titles of books, awards given and a small summary on how it has to do with disabilities. I want to be able to include ways I could incorporate books to disabilities can help other students gain an understanding as well as form connections not only between the student with disabilities and the characters within the book, but also with all students.

There should be an importance placed on including characters with disabilities to promote acceptance. A person without disabilities could benefit from this by relating to these characters even though they are different. They could share similarities and accept their peers with disabilities.  Literature that include characters with disabilities are useful because people may relate more if the characters are more rounded than flat. I usually hung out with other students with disabilities since not everyone accepts us for our differences.” He did, however, feel that if he would’ve read something or if his class would’ve discussed disabilities, then maybe it could’ve helped him come out of his shell more.

Another tip was to, “Clearly spell out expectations before the course begins (e.g., grading, material to be covered, due dates).” (Picard) This is helpful since the students can do this by themselves, regardless of any disabilities. This tip in particular related a special tool that many students, like myself, could overlook. Professors I have taken in UTRGV already do this, regardless if the class has students with disabilities or not.  The use of visually planning a list of what will be going on in a day is useful for all students. It has been useful for me as a student, even if I hadn’t recognized or appreciated how useful it could be for all students, especially to someone who could potentially have a disability. It promotes positive class attitudes for everyone. When I asked M.G if he felt that having this tool could’ve potentially helped him back when he was in school, he responded with,” Maybe. I know sometimes I would be backed up compared to other kids. I am partially deaf so it is hard to hear. Being able to see could’ve helped.” Visuals can be helpful to include for people who may have a hearing disability, so I would want to keep that in mind which could relate to Lohman’s 3rd tip listed above.

The fourth tip from Lohmann’s article I felt deserved to be discussed, because it is important to, “Have high expectations for all children, regardless of their ability levels.” (Lohmann) A teacher should not only want to educate, but also motivate all students to better themselves. I’d want to promote reading, especially out of school and in order to do that, it is important to keep in mind that in order to want to read, the reader has to be interested in what they would be reading. Promoting literature that could relate to a student could make them interested in reading. I asked M.G what he thought about the reading’s he was assigned back in school and he honestly couldn’t remembered. He told me,” I dunno. I never really read much of anything. It was too boring and I didn’t like it.” I followed by asking him what kind of expectations his teachers had for him and he said,” They just wanted me to pass. When my teachers couldn’t teach me, they’d send me to Special Education so they could do it. I feel they had low expectations of me, but at least other teachers (Special Education) supported me and my friends (who also had disabilities of some type). She made sure our class was always working together and that we get each other.” Although he didn’t have the most supportive teachers or classes, he was offered resources that allowed him to better himself, which made it seem that his Special Education class was inclusive in all ways, which is what really mattered.

Talking to M.G. about tips to use in a classroom made me feel that I was heading in the right direction when it comes to forming my future class setting. I want my future students to feel they are being offered all the necessary resources to help them advance. It is important to form inclusive settings in classrooms regardless of any disability.

I'VE BEEN PONDERING PG

Break those eight hours up into four, two-hour study sessions in the days leading up to the test. Really, actually schedule these two-hour study sessions into your calendar. Like this:
