4.   Challenges you faced (the nature of the work, working hours, organisation, motivation, tabling of ideas).

According to Johnson (2019), internships have their challenges along the way, but in the end, they still have not lost their significance. 

AFL Trade Period is a busy time of year. At SEN they hosted AFL Trade Radio, which was a hectic couple weeks because of all the new updates coming in quickly on the shows, which meant you had to keep on your toes and quickly edit them and get them out. Deadline day of the trade period was undoubtedly the most fast paced, stressful and high-pressure day of my entire internship, because of the amount of news, rumours and official trades being talked about every minute which I had to get out within seconds of it being mentioned on air. Fortunately this was at the end of my internship, and I had enough experience, knowledge and confidence in myself to get it all out asap.

Another challenge I faced was piecing the angle of a topic being discussed on the air together. Due to time restrictions we had on both horizontal and vertical clips, I found it hard initially to bring the story together or find which parts of the show to clip and post for the public. But again after more time working there, I began to understand which were the most important parts of the story, and which parts to just cut. This became more of a challenge when faced with editing NRL clips from their Sydney shows, as I don’t have much rugby knowledge. But again after watching it a few times, I came to understand which parts were most important for the viewers to watch.

Lastly, the challenge of having to deal with camera angles. Every now and then the cameras in the studios wouldn’t be fully on the host or guest, which meant we had to change our approach to how we edit and post the clip. This was challenging from an editing point of view.

Location of the workplace is something I found to be a minor challenge. At the start I would train it in, then having to walk 20 minutes to get to SEN. At times I did drive, there were extremely limited car parks in the area which was a worry because parking fines were regularly being given, to which I was a victim of a couple of times.

Motivation was a struggle at times. As mentioned previously, my job was to only clip up content from their on air programs. I love my sport and hearing the experts express their opinion on topics, as well as video editing and progressing my skills. But there were times I lacked motivation, after getting a little bored of the game thing every shift. But I would just remind myself why I am there, and pushed through and got back on track.

Week 10 - Magic Round

This week’s analysis will be about the NRL’s Magic Round that took place during Round 10, of the NRL Premiership season. This round sees all scheduled matches take place at one stadium over the course of one weekend, with as many as 3 games taking place on the same day. This round incorporates several PR topics, including articles, an event, competitions, giveaways and several photo opportunities.

The NRL is the organisation leading the campaign, as they create a spectacle around a round, making the round a ‘must-see’ event as supporters from all around Australia converge to Suncorp Stadium to witness the ‘magic’.

Secondly, Suncorp would hold some stocks in the success of ‘Magic Round’ as the stadium that the games will take place at, is named after the insurance company. Having all 8 games take place at the one stadium allows for significant advertising for the brand, as the stadium’s name (Suncorp) would be mentioned in the coverage of almost every game that takes place. Presenting the brand to a significant number of NRL fans.

There are several PR tools being used throughout this campaign. First of all there was an ‘NRL Magic Round Launch Event’ where fans travelled to King George Square in Brisbane for the opportunity to meet former NRL stars, win prizes and interact with team mascots.

The NRL use former players Cameron Smith and Bryan Fletcher as ambassadors for the event. Giving the fans an opportunity to win the ‘ultimate pub experience’ and enjoy the games on the big screens, whilst having a beer and chat with Smith and Fletcher.

The NRL also uses several sponsors to help fund the event, using their brand to give fans the opportunity to upgrade their seats for allocated games. This brand involvement can be used as an opportunity for fans to improve their relationships with their customers, creating experiences and memories for fans that will be associated with their brand.

Magic Round was promoted on through articles on social media, as well as on the FOX NRL channel on TV. The round was heavily promoted through strong NRL markets such as Sydney and Brisbane, whilst there was limited promotion in Victoria, due to its strong AFL market. However, ‘sport’-covering’ radio stations such as Triple M and SEN were the main radio stations promoting the round, one even giving away tickets to go watch the magic happen live.

For NRL fans this event is almost destined to succeed. the opportunity for NRL diehards to witness all 8 games of NRL live in one jam-packed weekend is a dream come true for some. The NRL’s ability to sign several sponsors and brands to take part in the event further adds to the commercial success. Brands such as Ampol, Chemist Warehouse, Bundaberg Rum, YOUi, Harvey Norman and major sponsor KFC all got involved for the round. When a sporting organisation has to entertain a capacity crowd of over 52,000 fans every day for a weekend, having activities around the ground is very important for fan interaction and the alignment of so many sponsors allow for these activities to take place.

This major spectacle is ultimately aimed at getting more eyes to notice the blockbuster that is the Magic Round and through the promotion of the round and the NRL’s affiliation with numerous brands does a terrific job at drawing more attention to the sport itself.

2020: Unprecedented Times

Most people, at the start of the year, had high hopes for 2020. For many, it was the start of a new decade (though, ask anyone on the street and the start of a decade is open to debate). Here in Australia, the start of 2020 merely carried on the disasters of 2019. Beset by bushfires all along the Eastern coast, we watched as our tourism numbers slump as the denizens of Sydney wore masks as a means to fight the harmful effects of smoke inhalation. Many small businesses, particularly in small towns, felt the brunt of the natural disaster. Homes were destroyed by the thousands. Worse was the fact that livelihoods that were dependent on visitors from all around the world (in particular, China) were also badly affected.

Why would anyone come to Australia, after all, when there was smoke in the air and the air quality was teetering on dangerously toxic?

Many hoped that once the fires had petered out, however, life would return to normal. Little did they know that by March, the world would be caught in the grips of COVID-19. After all, though there were the occasional news headlines of a new disease plaguing China in early January (which resulted in me warning my grandmother that maybe she not go over to celebrate the Year of the Rat), most people were focused on Donald Trump’s impeachment.

Then, of course, there was the assassination of an infamous Iranian general:  Qasem Soleimani. Once again, the world’s attention was arrested by the acts of the United States of America. Most were worried that the tension between Iran and the United States of America would boil over. At the time, it almost felt like a repeat of Trump’s antagonism towards North Korea.

In the United Kingdom, Brexit was well underway. After his re-election in December 2019, Boris Johnson continued his negotiations for a way that Britain could leave the European Union.

On a more personal scale, Australia was wracked by sport club funding scandals and climate change protests.

As for me, I was more concerned about the video game delays. Now that I write this, in December of 2020, I look back and think that perhaps it was appropriate for Cyberpunk 2077 to have been delayed until next year in order to fix the bugs that have the plagued the title ever since launch. Still, I was also vastly disappointed that Vampires the Masquerade II would not be releasing anytime soon. And saddened to hear that The Last of Us Part II had been pushed back.

After COVID-19 swept across the globe and taken hold in most countries and continents (which now extends to Antarctica thanks to a few Chileans testing positive), I watched as stupidity rose to the fore. Lockdown protests, the politicisation of the wearing of masks and the attacks on East Asians. Despite the severity of the virus and how infectious it was, I was disheartened to see so many people flout social distancing rules and break lockdown requirements. Most notably among the rich and famous such as politicians and NRL (National Rugby League) players.

Of course, being in Australia, our bid to ‘flatten the curve’ proved incredibly effective. Articles I’ve read indicate that this was mostly due to Australian’s observance of laws and regulations, as well as our trust in science. In fact, I’ve heard the refrain, ‘at least we’re not America’ spoken quite a few times this year. And honestly, after looking at the statistics, with the Land of the Free having upwards of 18.5 million cases with 326,000 (and counting) deaths, I couldn't agree more to the sentiment.

The whole ‘do as we say, not as we do’ approach by its President further served to fracture society and gave rise to conspiracy theories that served no purpose but showcase the height of people’s ignorance and distrust. It didn’t help that most Western countries also placed more importance on the ‘economy’ than people’s lives. Many global leaders were of the opinion that the ‘cure should not be worse than the disease’ and that a few deaths to keep the budget afloat was a necessary evil. 

Well, to that, I say, ‘Bah! Humbug!’ Without acting decisively and quickly, many nations have ruined their economy AND seen their people die in droves. When people are falling sick and suffering from long-term effects, they’re hardly likely to spend money. Nor will they be able to contribute to society and be able to continue working. Instead, you’ll be saddled with additional welfare taxes. By going hard and fast, closing down the economy for two months, maybe three, you can bounce back harder and stronger without fear of contagion.

Now, many countries are struggling with high numbers of new infected each day AND an economy that’s in tatters. Good job. 

It also doesn’t hurt to give back to the community and help struggling businesses. Schemes such as Jobkeeper and Jobseeker (at least in Australia) were able to alleviate some of the stress for many workers. And honestly, perhaps if the world had implemented a universal basic income, this would also enable people ensure their basic needs are met without sinking into poverty.

The fact that so many only see the short-term rather than long-term is astounding. And as for Sweden’s model? The less said about it, the better. ‘Herd immunity’ without a working vaccine? Madness. Utter madness. Particularly when the virus is airborne.

After enjoying a decent summer, numbers rose again in Europe and much of it was back under lockdown. A new strain, that has proven much more infectious, was discovered in the South of England! Trump tested positive for COVID-19, but to the dismay of many, he recovered quite quickly.

But 2020 did not end there. Once again, the struggles between ethnic minorities were brought again to the limelight. The death of George Floyd saw the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and served to highlight the disproportionate number of those living in poverty and in prison. As a person of colour myself (being of East Asian descent), I tried to explain some of this to my colleagues. But some of them saw Black Lives Matter as a predominantly American issue - and disregarded the fact that many Indigenous Australians were also in prison, caught in a vicious cycle of crime and violence.

It wasn’t long, however, that Australia experienced its own second wave in Melbourne, due to breaches in hotel quarantine. And honestly, it came as a surprise when it also happened in Adelaide and we learned that they weren’t testing hospital workers or those in high-risk workplaces on a REGULAR basis. You would have thought that all workers that transported aircrew or worked as security for those quarantining in hotels would be temperature-checked and given a swab every few days (or at least once a week). But no.

This is why we can’t have good things. 

Christmas in Sydney has also been somewhat neutered by the fact that there has been another sizeable outbreak in the Northern Beaches local council. And, of course, many people in Greater Sydney have been barred from other states. Gotta love those hard state borders where we treat each other as separate countries. Still - if it protects the people, the Premiers will stop at nothing. Even if it means families can’t be together. But better that than seeing Australia become the United States of America. 

Jumping from COVID-19, 2020 also saw an explosion in Beirut due to the storing of large amounts of ammonium nitrate at the port. Approximately 178 people were killed and more than 6,500 were injured. Locust swarms in Africa  descended upon crops, threatening food supply and livelihoods for millions of people. The West Coast of the United States of America suffered from catastrophic wildfires. Meanwhile, in south-east Asia, countries were hit by flooding and typhoons. As a side note, Armenia and Azerbaijan  restarted their ongoing feud. 

And to cap it all off, 2020 decided to further traumatise the future generation, a suicide video was uploaded to Tiktok. 

And oh, the US election. Where our favourite President tried to delay and impede mail-in-votes. In the days following the 3 November 2020 election, the world eagerly watched as the votes were counted and each state was certified. Trump, as is always his way, attempted to claim victory in the early hours of the morning of 4 November 2020, before deriding voter fraud with no evidence to substantiate his claims.

The weeks that followed saw a number of lawsuits that were lodged. Most, of which, were simply dismissed out of hand. And while his supporters have continued to claim that fraud was evident in the 2020 election, there has been no substantial pieces of evidence provided. Affidavits and hearsay, fortunately, do not a case make.

In Australia, our once promising relationship with China took a turn for the worse. While instances of racism, after the initial COVID-19, did not help, it also seemed that the finger pointing among government officials and demands for inquiries into wet markets only served to fuel the fire between the two nations. After initiating a trade war with the United States of America, China then saw fit to put significant tariffs on Australian beef, barley, wine and coal (to name but a few). 

The spat between Australia and China also took on a more insidious tone when several Australian journalists were forced to flee.

And with the unveiling of alleged war crimes committed by Australian troops in Afghanistan, the relationship between the two nations have come to an all-time low. China’s tweet of a doctored image that had an Australian soldier about to cut the throat of an Afghan child saw our Prime Minister taking to social media to demand an apology. 

All in all, 2020 has felt like both an incredibly short and long year in equal measure. For an introvert, such as myself, it’s been mostly the same. In fact, I can’t believe that it’s already at an end. Though my gaming has continued, as has my writing, I felt like I hardly interacted with any of my friends or did anything conducive to my social skills. While I’ve been made permanent at my place of work, it’s also felt a little stagnant. For a good long while, particularly in March, it felt like we were on the cusp of something huge and terrible. As the numbers climbed, I desperately wanted a hard lockdown to be called when leaders vacillated. 

2021 does not promise to be much better. While vaccines have rolled out in several countries, it’ll be a long time coming before the world manages to attain a sense of normalcy. For this blogger, I look forward to just kicking back and finally getting my hands on a PlayStation 5.

As for anyone that has worked on the front lines during this pandemic, I just want to say a big hearty ‘thank you.’ All of  you have sacrificed so much and seen so many terrible things. I wish that we all listened to your warnings instead of inundating emergency rooms thinking COVID-19 was a hoax.

Remember: keep at least 1.5 metres away from another person, wash/ sanitise your hands regularly and wear a mask if you can’t socially distance or are in an enclosed space.

We are on the way home from Ivy’s second day at school and I am being given a recital of ‘Yes Jesus loves me’ in Japanese. What has happened to our baby girl and who is this Kinder-ready young lady singing her heart out in the back of the car? Once my modern foreign languages lesson is complete, I start telling Ivy how much I enjoy collecting her from school and listening to her news on the way home when I’m cut short.

“I’d like to catch the bus,” she interjects. “Before I’m five.”

Life, it seems, is changing, with Ivy embracing everything head-on.

We’ve now been back in Albury for a month, adjusting to the increasingly warm weather and new routines while rekindling friendships we’ve made during previous stays. But while our surroundings are familiar and the street grid of Albury a road well-travelled, things are different this time. Whether permanent residency means forever, we will find out down the track, but we are here to stay, to put down roots, to live the Australian life and to get fully involved.

Some elements of that come more easily than others - one day you feel purposeful and productive, another quite isolated - but for us, like Ivy, this is ‘big school’, the real deal, real life. I don’t miss what I’ve left behind but I’m still searching for what’s ahead.

There’s no question it’s good to be back, though. I love how the AFL Grand Final fills a whole Saturday, like the FA Cup Final used to and still should. The MCG showpiece is almost as prominent as Christmas Day and even though this year’s match was totally one-sided (Richmond flogging GWS), sitting around the TV with friends and sharing good food over the course of several hours makes you feel like you’re part of a national event.

The NRL Grand Final (rugby league for the uninitiated) was an infinitely better spectacle, Sydney Roosters eventually getting the better of Canberra Raiders thanks largely to some controversial officiating. Rugby union’s World Cup has nowhere near the profile it enjoys back home - the sport simply isn’t that popular in Australia - but we did get to enjoy England’s big win over the Wallabies on free-to-air TV in a primetime Saturday evening slot, with Aussie coach Michael Cheika’s subsequent decision to quit getting more column inches than the entire tournament before it.

Of course, every code mentioned above is colloqiually known as ‘footy’ but there has, too, been football on the agenda thanks to my embryonic relationship with Murray United, the region’s biggest club - and one of its newest. There was a definite sense of ‘poacher turned gamekeeper’ when I was asked to co-ordinate a press conference for the unveiling of their new coach, having spent the last decade in newspapers, but it was just good to be back in that sort of environment. Hopefully it’s a role which grows over time (season starts early 2020).

It’s so good to be reunited with Liz and Ken Dick, friends we now consider family and whose hospitality has made this whole adventure possible. As well as sharing their home we continue to share many good times including recently eating at the Bethanga Hotel, where goats and sheep roamed between the restaurant tables, queueing for face painting (Ivy only) at the inaugural Gardenesque in the Albury Botanic Gardens and joining the crowds at the first Twilight Markets of this summer season.

Writing this blog has always been a good way of connecting with our friends and family, near and far, and I hope in time it will chart a different sort of journey in Australia as we look for a place of our own, jobs where we can really make a difference - and what time Ivy needs to be at the bus stop.

Because this is big school now.

A sunny Sunday afternoon, a packed Brookie up against the old enemy, the despised Eels and a victory. The only missing ingredient of a perfect afternoon being the absence of the dulcet tones of Rex “the Moose” Mossop calling the action.   

There were however some ominous signs for Manly though when it was reported that Brad Parker had been recalled into the team as a late replacement for an injured Cade Cust.   

Notwithstanding the inclusion of Parker, Manly opened the scoring after 5 minutes when improving winger Rueben Garrick crossed in the corner. Garrick then duly converted his own try. Young Garrick is but another example of a player improving in season 2019 as compared to last year, with the Sea Eagle still somewhat dumfounded as to the reason for this repeated and strange phenomenon. . The Sea Eagle vows to get to the bottom of this and seek a rational explanation.

The Eels then hit back with two tries of their own, the first as a result of a Horhay Torfua howler. Young Horhay has the turning circle and mobility of a Mk1 Abrams tank and the sooner he is moved into the forwards the better for all concerned.

Defence then took a back seat for the remainder of the half, particularly from the Eels and Manly ran in four tries including a screamer from Tommy Turbo. Even the much-maligned Brad Parker managed to cross for a try as Manly held a 26-12 lead at the break.   

The second half was less than inspiring with plenty of mistakes from both teams. Manly took their foot off the accelerator but made less mistakes than the Eels running in a further two tries with Rueben Garrick chalking up his first career hat-trick.   

Two late tries to the Eels added some respectability however the final 36-24 scoreline did not justify the commanding nature of the Manly victory.

What a hapless mob the Eels are, and it was interesting to note the prevalence of Manly discards (David Gower, Shaun Lane, Clint Gutherson, Coach Brad Arthur etc.) within their ranks, indeed further proof positive that no-one goes better when they leave the nest.

The win not only consolidates Manly within the top 8, but provides some hope for even better things to come as they now knock on the door of the top 4. Next week against the filthy wrestling, cheating rorters from Melbourne will provide a more accurate gauge on where Manly sit in season 2019.   

More Embarrassment for the NRL- Mark Coyne   

Since the off-season from hell the NRL has done a fair job in improving player behaviour however, the latest in a long stream of embarrassments comes directly from head office.   Proving that you can take the man out of the NRL, but you can never take the NRL out of the man, former Dragon and now NRL Commissioner, Mark Coyne has found himself in hot water and on the wrong side of the Singaporean legal system.

It has been reported in the press that Mr Coyne has unleashed an expletive laden tirade along the lines of "you are a f---ing stupid idiot", a "f---ing dickhead" and a "cock", "f---ing cock" and "f---ing dog", he also threatened to "sue you through your f---ing arse" and adding "if some f---ing stupid c--- sues me, I don’t f---ing care. Especially you". And then finally "you are f---ing crazy", "you must be f---ing embarrassed" and "you must be so f---ing proud of yourself"   

Such a tirade could have been excused and even justified had it taken place at an NRL Board meeting (and merely represented a rehash of the minutes of said meeting), or perhaps having been directed at incumbent NRL Chairman, Peter Beattie (given his many public statements in the past have only but confirmed his mastery of embarrassment).   

However poor old Mr Coyne made the fatal mistake of directing it towards a police officer in Singapore. Whilst the Australian judicial system seems to tolerate verbal and physical abuse directed towards the constabulary, such is not the case in Singapore and Mr Coyne was duly arrested, his passport confiscated and then detained in Singapore for seven weeks. 

The Sea Eagle can report that Mr Coyne got off lightly and was very fortunate not to have been sentenced to the traditional Singaporean punishment for such an indiscretion. 

Compounding this indiscretion, Mr Coyne then thought it would be acceptable to withhold informing the NRL of his misdemeanour, allegedly suggesting something about an ear infection which prevented him from returning from Singapore. Mr Coyne also pulled out that old and well used NRL chestnut, claiming that he was too intoxicated to remember the incident and that his behaviour was completely out of character (aren’t they all!!).  

It has since been reported in various outlets that Mr Coyne is a “good bloke and irreplaceable on the NRL Commission”. Be that as it may, and the Sea Eagle does not doubt it for one moment, with the power of an NRL independent Commissioner comes great responsibility. The first is not to embarrass oneself or the code (Mr Peter Beattie not knowing who the Sharks were is but one example of this), and the second it would seem, is not to go on drunken tirades in foreign lands and abuse the local police. Such things never end well.

The Sea Eagle notes that it has also been reported that Israel Folau is a “good bloke” but the NRL won’t allow him within a bull’s roar of participating in the greatest game of all.   

 As far as the Sea Eagle is concerned and bearing in mind that Clubs are required to immediately self-report any incident involving players/officials, in the interest of consistency (particularly given the Dylan Walker banning despite being found ultimately NOT GUILTY), the NRL, must enact its no-fault policy and Mr Coyne should be sacked from the Commission.

In the words of the great man President Trump, Mark Coyne “You’re Fired”.  

The Sea Eagle’s only other comment on this unmitigated debacle, is to urge those that actually control the independent commission of the NRL, to resist the temptation (largely from the News Limited and Fairfax media) to appoint someone on the commission who has a so called rugby league background. 

Everybody knows that sooner or later anyone with a significant rugby league background is more  likely than not going to have some sort of unsavoury incident surface. This is due basically to the rugby league  DNA factor .   Regrettably only those who are regular participants in rugby league seem to fully understand and appreciate how to control and limit  the impacts of this DNA chromosome mismatch, but as everybody knows, despite the best efforts all concerned, sooner or later the rugby league gene will kick in, and create embarrassment for all and sundry.  

It can't be stopped, it can only be managed.   This is not a criticism , as no other code on the planet seems to have this ability to recover from such significant embarrassment on a regular basis. But to put it as simply as one can, it is the reason why rugby league  is the greatest game of all and not the game they play in heaven (rugby union ). 

Trent Barrett

The Sun Herald reported that on Saturday 19 July 2019, Trent Barrett’s coaching tenure at Manly officially came to an end. The same publication also reported said Mr. Barrett has somehow managed to land a gig as part of the All Blacks support crew. The Sea Eagle is not in a position to verify the accuracy of this allegation but if it is true you can expect that the All Blacks will not win the 2019 World Cup.  

Moreover, if indeed it is true, the mind boggles at who actually thought this was a good thing to do in New Zealand rugby. For a nation who on any objective basis is by far and away the best managed and performing rugby union outfit on the planet, it beggars belief that they thought they even need to go anywhere near the former Shark/Dragon playing, DFI infected, ex-Manly coach. A quick review of his coaching record and the fact that he's never won a premiership as a player or as a coach only confirms the folly of such a decision (if indeed it has been made).  

Erskineville Toxic Waste Real Estate Developments   

We have all read about the recent debacle that is new home unit construction in Sydney and Melbourne but in particular in the area starting from South of the Harbour Bridge heading towards Botany and Mascot.

The latest in this sad and sorry saga is a revelation that a block of units in Erskineville will not be approved by the Council as fit for human habitation, because it has not complied with environmental rules. That is to say it was built on a toxic waste dump much in the same way that the Sydney Olympic Stadium was built on a toxic waste dump in Homebush.   

Seemingly it is not acceptable for a few 100 people to live in a block of units on a toxic waste dump in Erskineville but it is perfectly reasonable to put 80,000 people on a regular basis into a stadium in Homebush with possibly even more alarming environmental issues underneath it.   

The poor old punters who have bought these units off the plan can rightly feel that they have been Piss&d on from a great height.   Given the developer is an entity known as Golden Rain Development Pty Limited (apparently a Chinese backed real estate development firm), the Sea Eagle can confirm that the Director of Controversy is currently looking into whether or not a new name would be more appropriate. 

Something in the order of Golden Shower Development Pty Limited. But at this stage that is mere conjecture.

Boxing promoter Dean Lonergan Australia “extremely likely” to host Wilder-Fury III

If the United States does not welcome back crowds to sporting events by October, the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder trilogy fight “is extremely likely” to be held in Sydney on Boxing Day, says Australian promoter Dean Lonergan.

Australia has had enormous success in containing COVID-19, with the island nation seeing a total of just 7,267 cases, compared to over two million in the United States and 287,000 in the United Kingdom. This week, the NRL is beginning to drip feed crowds back into venues, while the AFL is also exploring avenues to get fans in attendance at games.

Lonergan’s unexpected pitch to host the Fury-Wilder bout in Australia was sent to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum last month and was reportedly “well received” by the legendary fight promoter.

“About six weeks ago I thought Australia is doing quite an amazing job with coronavirus infection rates, and figured why not bring the fight here,” Lonergan told ESPN. “Nobody likes to leave money on the table, so the fact you can do it in front of a big crowd is a huge bonus.

Could the trilogy fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury be held in Australia? ESPN

“The bulk of the money which comes from Wilder vs. Fury comes from TV, and not from the gate. If you have a look at the gate from the MGM Grand — where they held the last fight — they did US$15 million. Now I don’t know if we can get to US$15 million, but I’m confident we could get to a number which is reasonable enough that they would say let’s go down to Australia. It’s far more appealing than nothing.

“We’re one of only two places in the mix, Macau and here. The US isn’t in the mix because they won’t be having crowds for a very long time. If there’s no crowds going back to the US, or even before October, you’d say this is extremely likely.”

Arum has since commented on the possibility of taking arguably the year’s biggest fight Down Under, saying crowds will likely be the determining factor.

“We are working through everything but in essence we have to do it this year and the question then is will Australia, which seems like they have the coronavirus under control, would they allow an event with a full stadium?” Arum said. “It is a real, real possibility. Again, there is so much involved that is usually not involved in planning an event because of this virus.”

Lonergan, who helped put on 2017’s Battle of Brisbane between Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn, explained the logistics behind the fight pitch.

“I like Bankwest Stadium in Sydney,” Lonergan told ESPN. “In a boxing configuration, you could get 40,000 people there, at a pinch 45,000. I think that would sell out. We would 100 percent look at doing this in Melbourne, because it has a great history with UFC at Marvel Stadium. This would easily work in Melbourne.

“We could do it at 1:30pm in the afternoon on Boxing Day in Australia, which is primetime in the US [on Christmas Day]. Boxing Day isn’t the be all and end all. At the end of the day we’ll fit in with what those guys want.

“This fight would be distributed to 150 countries around the world. From a sheer spectacle and global distribution, this would be the most significant boxing fight in Australian boxing history.”

Tyson Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren says he has yet to see an offer to stage Fury-Deontay Wilder III in Australia.

“Until there’s an offer on the table, there’s nothing concrete, it’s just interest at the moment,” Warren told ESPN.

The first fight between Fury and Wilder, in 2018, ended in a draw. More recently, Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round to earn the WBC heavyweight title.

The sooner that the NRL move Manly home games away from Home of the Gayamaygal and Garigal Peoples, and back to Fortress Brookvale the better. Manly are now in recent times, 0-2 at this venue after going down to the Warriors and the Sea Eagle implores Manly management to address this urgently before all hope is lost for season 2020. Even playing at the dreaded Central Coast would be a better option.

The game started horribly when Cherry Baby was bundled into touch from the kickoff. As Rex Mossop used to say the sideline is a precipice that should never be crossed (generally referring to inept wingers), so on this basis Cherry Baby, who is on the big bucks should know better than to put himself in such a position in the first place.

And talking about inept wingers, Horhay Taufua was again found wanting in this fixture with the Warriors seeming to target his side with great success on numerous occasions leading to at least 3 of their tries. The not so young Horhay is next to useless under the high ball (as he cannot get his 110 kg frame off the ground), he has the turning circle of an Abrams M1 tank, and his propensity to come in, in defence to try and deliver a bone crushing tackle is now exposing his outside flanks. Sure, when it comes off it’s great to see (just ask Cameron Munster), but this is becoming all to rare and opposing teams are now exploiting Horhays deficiencies. As indicated last week, surely its time for a move to the forwards for Horhay, or alternatively to acquaint himself with the reserve grade coach.

In soggy conditions the undermanned and under siege Warriors leapt out of the blocks and within 15 minutes had racked up a 16-zip lead. Let’s face it in recent times Manly have very a very poor record when playing in wet conditions so such a performance was not totally unexpected.

Manly managed to hit back with tries to Tevita Finua and Moses Suli, when the Warriors had a player in the bin, but a further try to the NZ based team on the strocke of half time gave them a 20-10 lead at the break.

Only minutes into the second half, the Warriors crossed again, this time via former Manly man, Peta Hiku and at this point the Sea Eagle was reaching for the valium. There was a late surge by Manly when Warriors forward Jack Hetherington was binned for KO’ing Marty Tapau with a shot that surely warranted a sending off, but at the end of the day it was too little too late as Manly went doen 26-22.

The plight of the Warriors this year has been well documented. Having to leave NZ and relocate to Australia (normally not such a bad thing), their coach being sacked, and being severely undermanned as many of their playing group gradually pull up stumps and return to their families in NZ. There was even talk of Paul Gallen coming out of retirement to join their roster. On this basis there is no shame in losing to the Warriors, there was only embarrassment. A number of Manly players need to visit the room of mirrors after such a performance, particularly also bearing in mind this was coach Hasler’s 400th game as a coach – he deserved much better!

As was the case last week, with Manly now languishing even further down the table, the Sea Eagle now implores the NRL to pull stumps on season 2020 and put us all out of our misery. Games are becoming more meaningless each week and whoever takes the premiership this year (if we get that far) will forever be remembered as winning a title that no-one really gives a flying f#$k about.

Talking of the NRL, it has been noted that they have yet to formalise the appointment of a CEO to replace Todd Greenberg. Whilst the acting CEO, Andrew Adbo is doing a sterling job (by basically staying out of the way and letting Chairman Peter V’landys get things done), surely the NRL world deserves the certainty a formal appointment for this all important role.

Whilst the Sea Eagle as always stands ready, if called upon, there is another prime canditate waiting in the wings to take the reigns at the NRL. That being none other than Victorian Premier Dan Andrews whose handling of the COVID situation in that state is a shining example of administrative and managerial excellence that once was the exclusive domain of rugby league senior management. 

The NRL have a proud history of appointing ex state ALP premiers to key positions, and come the next election its likely that Premier Dan will freed up for new opportunities and will be on the radar for a new challenge.

The Return of DFI

Only a month ago, Paul McGregor stood alone as the only remaining DFI (i.e. Dark Force Influenza for the young kiddies who were not reading the Sea Eagle back in 2005) infected non-premiership winning ex Dragon in the NRL coaching ranks, and he was only hanging on by a thread as the Dragons season was in free fall. A few wins later and he at least looks like seeing out the season.

Then we had the news that the DFI infected non-premiership winning ex Dragon/Shark Trent Barrett had been appointed to the head job at the Bulldogs for next season. There is no need for the Sea Eagle to make further comment about this appointment that has not already been said.

And now to top it off, it has been reported that the DFI infected non-premiership winning ex Dragon, and coaching failure at the Knights, Nathan Brown has been appointed to the head job at the Warriors next season.

 As was the case in Barretts appointment, surely those in charge of this decision at the very least should have sought explanation and clarification of the following questions and issues, during the interview and appointment process. Namely; “Nathan:

Have you won an NRL premiership as a player?

Have you won an NRL premiership as a coach?

Have you ever been coached at NRL club level by a premiership winner?

As a player were you ever coached by DFI patient zero, Brian Smith?

Is it possible that as a consequence of the above question, that you are infected with DFI which is still transmittable to players that you coach?

As a coach, did you ever publicly slap a player (who was also a DFI infected, ex-Dragon, non-premiership winner?) and who now coaches the Dogs?

Will you and said new Dogs Coach create a new Cup the next time the Warriors play the Dogs, known simply as the DFI Cup? Will there be a slap off in the case of a draw?

Were you sacked from your previous NRL head coaching role?

Has any team since your sacking, under a new coach improved (to wit the Newcastle Knights?)?

The fact that these three, McGregor, Barrett and now Brown will all have NRL head jobs, beggars belief and highlights the ignorance and lack of rugby league acumen by so many in Club NRL management positions. The fact that the Clubs in question (i.e. Dragons, Bulldogs and Warriors) have become perennial bottom feeders is no coincidence.

And Finally Some Controversy

It was reported during the week that the appropiately named Bronco’s winger Katoni Staggs was involved in some form of leaked sex video featuring himself and a busty teen.

In normal circumstances it would be fair to assume that the leaking of said video would have been the handy work of the NRL player in question (think Tyrone May, Big Papi etc). However in this instance it has been revealed, following extensive viewing by the NRL Integrity Dept, that young Staggs was the victim of what has been termed “revenge porn” as the video was released by the female participant in response to being jilted by Staggs who apparently refused to partake in a threesome with her and a friend. Surely it remains now for the NRL Integrity Dept to get to the bottom of why such a reasonable request by this young lady and her friend was declined by young Staggs!

Whilst, this is fairly lame in terms of controversy, its as good as it gets in season 2020, and we can only hope that the 2020 competition is brought to an end asap with that the mother of all off-seasons will follow.

  Rules are not Rules

Last week the Sea Eagle reported NRL Supremo Peter V’Landys edict that there needs to be flexibility in rules interpretation. The Sea Eagle never thought however, that many in senior positions in rugby league would take this to heart.

Here is the tale of the tape of this week’s Covid 19 protocol cluster breaches (in and of themselves they are basically meaningless, but in these challenging times, with the game’s TV revenues on the line, it still does beggar belief that somethng so simple can be flouted in the misguided belief that no one would find out):

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett fined $20,000 for breaching NRL's coronavirus protocols - Wayne Bennett had already been stood down for two weeks by the NRL after it was revealed on Thursday 6 August he and his partner had lunch at a restaurant in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Leichhardt

The Broncos Alan Langer and two other football staff members - Ryan Whitley and Blake Duncan - attended a private function in Brisbane to mark Langer's birthday - with only a few people in a private dining room upstairs at the Caxton Hotel in Brisbane. NRL breach notices have followed.

Dragon Prop Paul Vaughan was stood down and forced into a 14-day isolation "hold" after he was spotted dining at an Illawarra café ahead of his side's 24-16 loss to the Roosters on Thursday 6 August 2020. Vaughan apparently admitted to Nine News that he was at the cafe, although he has denied using a false name at the venue to escape detection.

Broncos star Tevita Pangai jnr will be fined for breaching the NRL's biosecurity rules after being caught up in a police raid on a Brisbane barber shop, after the 24-year-old Tongan international allegedly attended the opening of a barber shop which has been linked to a notorious bikies group.

Brisbane Broncos head coach Anthony Seibold has also joined three of his Broncos assistants (see above) in being placed on a "COVID hold", meaning he will be away from the team for 14 days. The Broncos played in Sydney on Friday night 7 August 2020, and Seibold allegedly stayed behind to attend to "a serious family matter”. He is expected to return to Brisbane in the next two days but will then have to isolate for two weeks.

Sea Eagle Comment

With the exception of Coach Siebold, who surely must fall into the Peter V’Landys exceptional circumstances justification for breaking rules category, the rest is not much more than what would be expected.

Witness Victoria, who had all the resources in the world but still couldn’t stop private escort (sorry security) guards in quarantine hotels from having sex and generally close contact with those they were supposed to be guarding. It’s a bit much to demand perfection from NRL participants if that is the benchmark from an Australian State government.

Frankly, and the Sea Eagle has said this before, a new town needs to be created. The Sea Eagle now calls on the NRL to buy some cheap land out in outer Western NSW and just call it Chatswuhan , with the motto – No Eating of Bats Allowed.

This would be a town where rugby league and NRL officialdom go, for the sole purpose of completing the 2020 season. Persons from outside said Chatswuhan bubble could of course enter, but the usual rules apply, i.e. big Maroon sign at the border – Warning Chatswuhan is an NRL sanctioned Non-Bat Eating town - enter at own risk”.

Mandatory self isolation would also be required if anyone chose to leave (a bit like the Eagles song Hotel California, i.e. the reality is you can check out but you can never really leave).

Inside the said Chatswuhan bubble it would be a veritable free for all, a bit like Dodge City in the days of the wild west (with the exception of course – no eating of Bats).

As the man on the fat aka Sam Kekovich famously said, you know it makes sense.

Meet JP

In the latest of our team interviews, meet JP, he is a partner of Lookahead and in a previous life he was a development manager and an Agile coach before joining Lookahead!

What do you do at Lookahead and how long have you been working with us? I’m a bit of an old soul with Lookahead. Steve told me his idea for starting his own company, back when we were having drinks at The Baxter Inn many moons ago. Officially, I’ve been with Lookahead for over five years. I’m a partner and technical recruiter. Essentially, I help our clients build amazing product development teams, and I help awesome developers and tech leaders find great companies to work with.

What’s your background? Where were you in the tech industry before joining Lookahead? I’m an engineer at heart, and graduated with a computer engineering degree back in 2003 in Vancouver, Canada. I worked as a software developer for the first five years of my career. I then moved more into people leadership, becoming a team lead, and then a development manager for the next four years. After I moved to Sydney in 2010, I became an Agile software professional, performing roles as a consultant Scrum Master, product owner and Agile coach. The major technologies I worked with earlier in my career were Microsoft, C# .Net, C++, and VB. I’ve even done a bit of FPGA (field programmable gate array) programming, and early mobile app development with Embedded C++ for devices like the Palm Pilot and the Compaq iPaq.

If you weren’t at Lookahead where would you be working or what is your dream job? I want to be in a job that allows me to engage my passions, helps people, and hopefully also has a positive impact on society. As corny as it sounds, I feel that I am able to do all that at Lookahead, so for now and into the foreseeable future, it is my dream job. As an engineer and technology professional, I would’ve never envisioned myself loving this role, but I really do! How funny is life!

First Car? A blue 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. It had a moonroof, CD player and subwoofer. I loved that car! Unfortunately it wasn’t built very well, and quickly broke down multiple times over the years. Funny enough, I’ve only owned Japanese-made cars since then. Next was a Toyota, then a Honda, and now we have a Mazda CX9, which fits my growing family.

Hidden Talent? I used to play the alto saxophone in a jazz band back in high school. I actually received a scholarship to study music at university, which I turned down as I also got a scholarship to study engineering.

Proudest Accomplishment? Being a father to two young boys and being able to balance my career such that I can spend quality time with them at this age. I’ve had both my boys whilst being at Lookahead. It’s such a blessing and privilege to be a father. It’s also the toughest job I’ve ever had, but also the most fulfilling.

Favourite Sports Team? I have many favourite teams! All time favourite sports team would be my Vancouver Canucks NHL ice hockey team. In other sports, I support the Seattle Seahawks NFL team, the St. George Illawarra Dragons NRL team, and the Sydney Swans AFL team, of which I was a season ticket holder for years, before having kids!

What piece of technology seems like magic to you? As an engineer it’s hard for me to answer this question, as I’m naturally inquisitive and try to deeply understand how technologies work from a fundamental level. Given my background, I’m able to research and learn about things at the first principles and physics level, so it doesn’t seem like magic. Having said all that, when I first saw a microwave oven in action a long time ago, that certainly seemed quite weird and magical. I mean, an oven takes ages to heat up food. How did this machine do that in a few seconds?! So, I think in some ways, that might have sparked my interest in learning, and trying to understand how things work, particularly from a technology perspective.

What’s on your Bucket List? Many things are on my bucket list. With my family, I’d like to travel to every continent including Antarctica, and cruise the Panama Canal. A ‘Round the World’ cruise would be amazing as well. I’d also like to learn different languages; particularly Spanish and to pick up French again. We learned French in school, as I grew up in bilingual friendly Canada, but lost it over time as I haven’t had a chance to use it since moving to Australia. Also, being important enough to be interviewed for a written profile piece, so tick, that’s one item off the list ;-)
