Say "NO" to π Day

π is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. π is a value. π Day is 03.14 every year. The decimal representation of π is 3.141592... and π Day is placed on 03.14 as the 3 most significant digits are 3, 1, and 4.

While the month part(03) of the date is a valid approximation of the value of π, the day part(14) has no real relation to π. 1 and 4 are digits based on base 10 fractions. 10 is not a special number. 10 is not a prime number. 10 is not a unique number. 10 is not a first of its kind. 10 is simply an arbitrary number that happened to align with the number of fingers on a typical human being.

π Day is a day to celebrate π and math. The glory of π should not be represented by whimsical, arbitrary choice of notation for an approximation of π. Even a binary notation would not be able to capture the pure value of π (this is not even possible on our current calendars, with π being 11.00... when represented in binary). Not even 2, the first and last even prime, and the smallest integer that can birth new values through multiplication, can capture the essence of π.

π is not a number to simply be arbitrarily be given a finite representation. π Day is a disgrace and an abomination. 10 is not a number worthy of bearing the weight of π. No number (except perhaps e) can bear the weight of representing π. π is a value to be cherished. Celebrating 03.14 amounts to nothing but idolatry.
