Exciting news for those who have been hoping to see Andrew Scott in Vanya, but haven't been able to get tickets.

I learned earlier in the month that two shows were being filmed, but not until this morning was it confirmed that it was for NT Live, which brings the live theatre experience to an expanded audience through cinemas worldwide.

As of now it looks like tickets are limited to UK and Ireland venues, starting in February 2024, but the announcement did say "worldwide", so hopefully that will soon change to include shows in other countries.

National Theatre Live: Othello 見たよ

YouTubeで見たよ。

「システム」と呼ばれるバックに配置される俳優たちが、イアーゴの悪意やオセロの嫉妬が吹き出す場面にいて、それが人間の感情を増長する役割を表していた。嫉妬や差別感情は個人的な感情であると同時に、社会的なシステムと繋がると憎悪が増長していくことを思わせる。衣装がなんとなくナチスの親衛隊ぽいなと連想してしまった。

オセロを今まで一度も見たことはなかったが、オセロといえば嫉妬、とは私でも知っているように、演出としてもその点は存分に嫉妬の怖さを感じさせられた。演出家の意図としては黒人差別と女性への暴力がテーマだったと話に聞いたが、その点でも解釈できるシェイクスピアはやっぱりすごい。

差別の連鎖というか、陥れられたオセローが追い詰めていくのは、社会の中でも従順さを押し付けられる立場の女性で、その女性を知らずに窮地に追い込んでしまうのもまた、ドメスティックバイオレンスを日常的に受けているエミリアであるのも悲しい。エミリアは自分が拾ったハンカチのために、敬愛するデズデモーナを死に追いやったのだと気づき慟哭する場面が圧巻だった。

気高いオセローが嫉妬に駆られていくさまを演じきったジャイルズ・テレラさん良かった。この人はハミルトンのバーを演じた人だけど、それも見たいよね〜。

Where to start alright so first off PRAISE IN THE ACTORS STELLAR JOB

Second the lighting was UN.BELIEVE.ABLE. Astounding. Stage, simple, but the lighting - my WORD I am all a flutter. The use of spotlighting for monologues? The dark/light for asides? The CAPTIVE AUDIENCE

The captive audience was such an interesting choice because that's US, right, they're us, we're part of Iago’s mind, but also they reflect the mental states, and isn't it interesting how Othello ALSO gets them as he poses his mind????

Emilia played as the battered wife is a new one for me and honestly HUGE Beryl and Stapleton Hound Of The Baskervilles 2002 vibes. Incredible.

観終わってすぐは、脳がメルトダウン、思考が停止してしまった。 NTLiveを観ていつも思うことは、私たちの身近に作品が舞い降りるということだ。 作品が生まれた国や、当時の時代背景を実感できなくとも、今を生きる私たちの脳に直接アプローチしてくる。

作品のベースになっているのは… 1692年〜1693年にアメリカ・マサチューセッツ州のセイラムで起こった「セーラムの魔女裁判」。 2人の少女の告発をきっかけに100名以上が投獄され、19名もの人間が死刑となった。 その影に隠されているのは… 1947年に始まった 共産主義活動を調査するという名目のもとに行われた反共運動であり思想統制を目的とした炙り出し「赤狩り」。

けれど私が感じたのは… たわいもないきっかけで始まった「〜遊び」の様な憑依ごっこが、とんでもない事件に展開していく様が、あまりにも「あるある」だったこと。 一夜の関係を持った妻帯者への少女の一途な思いが復讐に向かうなんてことは古今東西よくある話だから、たまたまそれは引き金だっただけの話。

信じた大人を嘲笑うかの様に？ それが本当だと思い込んでしまった？ 何が起こっているか分かっていながら後にひけなくなってしまった？ いずれにしても三幕の少女たちには迸るアドレナリンを感じたし、ある意味人間の中に潜む悪魔を垣間見た。 そしてそれが大人ではなく、子供たちの自発的な行為だったことがますます怖い。 人間の本能なのだと感じずにはいられなかったから。

そしてそれに翻弄される大人たち…。

恐怖だったり、優越感だったり、独占欲だったり、嫉妬だったり…。 他者の排斥と自己防衛本能による集団心理。 古くは平然と行われていた村八分、今もなお決してなくならないいじめ、差別…SNSは炎上し、誹謗中傷や風評被害が拡大する。 そして戦争も間違いなくその延長線上にあるわけだ。 性悪説だ…と思ってしまった。

そして、だからこそ四幕は人ととしての尊厳を問おていたような気がする。邪悪な煩悩だけではなく、人を愛し、思いやる、尊いDNAを信じたい。

調べるほどに、この作品に反映された赤狩りや、ピューリタン思想などの要素を色濃く感じる反面、シンプルに一人の人間として直感的に感じたものを大切にしたいと思った。

To the cinema to see some theatre: #CinemaNova Prima Facie #NTLive. I was lucky to see Suzie Miller’s play at its premier at #Griffin in a minimalistic production that gave full force to Sheridan Harbridge’s amazing performance. Here, in a more elaborate London West End production, Jodie Comer is similarly impressive, however the full-pelt direction doesn’t give enough time to let the audience catch up until… it’s too late. Dramatic, but we have to build empathy first. Also the didactic ending is even more pronounced here. Nevertheless worth seeing.
