☕️Nubia:Real One☕️

To kickstart my jump back into reading I picked up this comic written and illustrated by LL McKinney and Robyn Smith. I figured it would be something like and easy and fun.

It was that and so much more.

This book really unlocked my inner high schooler. I really enjoyed the dynamics between the moms and Nubia and loved the reveal of who D was. I’m not really into DC like that and I can’t tell you whether or not it fits the original story or whatever, but what I can tell you is the way it handles race and black superheroes is amazing. The way it handles growing up and everything that comes with it beautifully done.

While there were somethings I wished we saw more development in, for this being such a story, it makes sense that they quickly brushed over some of the relationship dynamics. Hopefully they get the chance to make this into a series to grow them more organically but we’ll see.

Overall this was a pretty good read that I’d recommend to anyone who loves comics and seeing black people succeed and be loved and cared for. The representation went hard.

As the archivist of the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, you’ve collected a lot of knowledge over the thirteen years you’ve worked there. Yet, there has been nothing that fascinated you more than the story of Sekhmet.

A goddess of love turned goddess of war with a bloodlust so deadly that her father, the sun god Ra, was forced to fashion a necklace that Hathor could wear in order to contain Sekhmet.

The necklace glittered with gold and diamonds, but it was the single ruby that sat nestled at her throat that was the real treasure.

Said to contain a drop of Ra’s blood, it was a gem so powerful that it could grant lesser creatures invulnerability when the necklace was worn.

And now, your brother thinks he’s found the legendary Temple of Sekhmet. A temple that was supposedly built to house the necklace.

This could be the adventure of a lifetime and you refuse to be left behind.

This is an 18+ wip due to violence, depictions of blood and gore, optional sexual content, death, elements of body horror, and abduction.

✧ Play as a female, male, or nonbinary mc with cis and trans options. Choose your pronouns and titles separately.

Maddox [M]

The bane of your life and one of the only people you trust to always have your back. He’s more of a lover than a fighter and has a silver tongue that could get him out of any situation, but don’t underestimate his protectiveness over you. Older brother prerogative and all that.

Elijah/Elodie Caddel [M/F] [RO]

El is charismatic, quick-witted, and familiar with the temple of Sekhmet making them the perfect companion on your quest. However, for all their charm, they are notorious for keeping everyone but Aksel at a distance, so it is a surprise to all when they quickly seem to develop a deep fondness for you. As well as a wicked protective streak.

Menna Bakir [M/F/NB] [RO]

As a Medjai Chieftain, Menna is responsible for the lives of many. For that reason, they have learnt to show little emotion, although it is noted that they soften around animals and now it seems, you. Once their trust has been earned and they become more comfortable with your group, you’ll see a much more relaxed and even teasing side to them.

Nakia/Nubia Hassan [M/F] [RO]

N can be utterly ruthless when it comes to getting what they want for the museum, but with you they're almost always very bubbly and friendly. They're your childhood best friend and your biggest supporter, and without them, you wouldn't be taking this trip across the desert to discover the secrets that lie in wait.

Aksel Madsen [NB] [RO]

While they seem lazy and unbothered, it doesn’t take long for you to realise that there’s something not quite right about them. They’re too observant, too intelligent, and too calculating. Despite this, you wouldn’t class them as a bad person, especially not when you’ve seen the way they look out for El and, on occasion, you.

My favorite Manga and Graphic Novels I Read in 2022

I read 54 different manga and graphic novel series in 2022 (you can see them here, from the beginning until the print novels start with Hench. I only included one from each series for my own weird reasons but I'm up to date on everything except Adachi and Shimamura and Prince Freya, which I dropped for now). You can also see my favorite novels of 2022 here! 

Here are my favorites!

Snapdragon by Kat Leyh

A young girl gets involved with a witch who has has lots of skeletons (animal and otherwise). I’ve always loved Leyh’s work, and this is her usual super queer fantasy that has everything I adore- cute art, cool witches, animal magic, older butch lesbians with eye patches, lovable characters and lots of sweetness.

SHWD by Sono.N

It’s refreshing to see a dark sci-fi yuri about incredibly ripped adult women fighting monsters, and it really pulls off the horror of the monsters well with some gripping action. The characters were pretty charming too and there was a lot of attention paid to the trauma of the situation.

However, it does have a 'character who looks like a child', which is not my favorite trope for a lot reasons. It bothers me a bit less than other series because the art style does not do cutesy. She just looked like a short adult. The reasoning for having her there was...interesting, I'm not sure where they'll go with that, but it's original, though potentially weird?

Anyway, I like what it's doing and I'm interested to see where this goes. I hope we continue to get a variety of yuri like this published over here!

The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This by Takashi Ikeda

Two ladies- 32-year-old anime screenwriter and 22-year-old newbie anime voice actress- live together and navigate their romantic relationship. It’s mostly done in short vignettes, but the central couple has a fun dynamic and the art is nice, and some plot threads slowly develop as the books go on. It’s a cozy read, and it’s nice to see the ups and downs of an adult relationship where they share living space. I also find the 32 year old attractive, to be honest, I’d date her.

Until I Met My Husband by Ryousuke Nanasaki, art by Yoshi Tsukizuki

An autobiographical story of the first religiously recognized gay marriage in Japan. It’s not super lengthy or meaty, but it’s a sweet read.

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe

You might have heard of this book based on how it was banned in a lot of places, it’s simply an autobiographical story of growing up genderqueer. It’s a breezy read with some nice evocative art, and Kobabe is pretty relatable.

Nubia: Real One by L.L. McKinney, Art by Robin Smith

I read a bunch of the DC standalone YA offerings from the library this year and found most of them to be a let-down, but this was a good one. It follows a young Nubia, a black girl who discovers she’s an Amazon related to Wonder Woman herself, and uses her abilities to confront some very real dangers and injustices, while also struggling against racism and other forms of prejudice. Satisfying, solid YA.

Who Killed Jimmy Olsen? By Matt Fraction, Art by Steve Lieber

Another library read. A fun riff on the zaniness of Silver Age Jimmy Olsen comics with a healthy does of humor, it follows the bizarre life of Superman’s BFF as he tries to avoid assassination and does some viral YouTube videos .I especially liked the weird but sweet relationship Jimmy and Clark had in this, and the gentle dunking on Batman.

Run Away With Me, Girl by Battan

Maki’s girlfriend, Midori, broke up with her during her high school graduation, saying she had to “move on” to dating guys now that she was grown up. Ten years later, Maki runs into Midori and finds she’s in an abusive relationship with a man she’s engaged to after getting pregnant. Maki asks Midori to run away with her, but will she?

This is definitely a darker yuri- the abuse Midori faces escalates, and the dude she’s with is basically an incel- but it’s handling the subject matter well so far and I’m really interested to see where it goes. There’s been a notable amount of yuri lately that’s tackled the belief that love for other women is just a childish phase, but this is the first one I’ve seen that explores what happens to a woman who believes that and forces herself into a heterosexual relationship. The abuse Midori faces is not at all framed as her ‘just desserts’ or anything, but a tragic circumstance that happened to a woman who was desperate to fit in and not be alone. The art is also fantastic and distinctive. I really hope it sticks the landing!

She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki

A slice-of-life foodie yuri manga! Nomoto cooks more than she can eat, and she notices her next-door neighbor is a big eater and invites her over. A very slowburn romance strikes up. I got interested in this because of the authors marriage equality activism, and it’s a cute read. It’s laid back and slow paced, but there are nice moments of realism that make it very grounded- the way the women talk about being mistreated at work, Nomoto complaining that all the fashion articles she look up talk about impressing men- it was relatable! I also liked that Kasuga is large and butch and doesn’t have to look conventionally ‘cute’.

Cheer Up: Love and Pom-Poms by Crystal Fraiser

A cute YA about an acerbic young lesbian joining the cheer squad and repairing her relationship with her people-pleasing trans friend. It’s for a younger audience, but it’s a sweet romance with adorable art.

I Want to Be A Wall by Honami Shirono

I’m interested to see where this one goes. An aro-ace woman and a gay man in love with his (seemingly, so far) straight best friend enter a marriage of convenience. Yuriko’s obsessive BL fandom can get annoying, but it’s always refreshing to see the ace character represented and the manga is realistic about the struggles we face. I’m rooting for this one!

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon by Shio Usui

A slow burn office lady romance, it’s just downright cute. It might be a little slowpaced for some but I enjoyed it!

Catch These Hands! by Murata

I’m a huge sucker for delinquent girls, so the story of two former delinquent girl rivals who meet again as adults, only for one to challenge each other to a fight with the condition that she’ll date her if she loses? Sign me up! This is, unfortunately, a little uneven- the second volume was kinda eh and introduced an annoying side character with some questionable tropes-but the third volume picked things up again and included a wonderfully absurd training montage. Though it starts with one of the women wanting to change and appear less like a delinquent and more ‘normal’, the clear message of the series is she doesn’t need to. If you don’t like any kind of violence, no matter how weird and divorced from reality, this isn’t for you though, as there is the whole challenge-to-a-fight thing, but it’s tongue in cheek and wacky enough I don’t mind.

Continuing favorites:

Witch Hat Atelier- Can't believe Witch Hat punched the 'funny anime pervert' trope to dust like it deserves, while also exploring and denouncing victim blaming in a genuinely affecting way. This manga is legendary. Also I'm very worried for everyone.

Yuri is My Job!- Really escalated wonderfully with it’s tangled web of relationships, rich backstories, and commentary on how people, especially queer people, often put on a performance. What IS the true self? One character’s commentary on how she wanted her work place to ‘like romance without the romance’ (a la class S) yet can’t suppress her true romantic fantasies was especially well-done. There’s also a character saying ‘friggin’ heteros’. The accurate representation we need, clearly. I just really enjoy this cast of characters.

Spy x Family (A Yor arc! Finally! And there’s just as much murder and mayhem as that should entail!), My Love Mix Up! (continues to be adorable), Yona of the Dawn (dramatic backstory reveals!), How Do We Relationship? (it’s really interesting to read a gay romance where the central relationship is acknowledged as not good for both of them and they try to move on), Delicious in Dungeon (the dungeon adventures are ramping up!), A Man and His Cat (more kitty cuteness), The Way of the House Husband (more hijinks), Bride’s Story (another volume of the beautiful historical epic! It’s been a while.), The Adventure Zone graphic novels (continue to be a lot fun with fantastic art), I Think Our Son is Gay (continues to be a sweet look at a mom supportive of her gay son), Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun (I’ll always love these idiots) and My Wandering Warrior Existence by Kabi Nagata (another entry in Nagata’s moving autobiographical series about the struggles of mental illness, self reflection, and queer exploration).

Design notes: -purposely added more elements because she deserves so much more!!! 😭💓 -I tried to keep more in theme with Genshin Impact design or else it wouldn't be a Genshin character redesign -kept the Genshin Impact fashion choices such as long fabrics, which in real life would be unideal for combat -"eye decor" based on one eyed Kush queen, Queen Amanirenas, similar design to Dainsleif Reference notes: -most of the images are top results for google images/articles while searching: Kandake, Candace, kingdom of Kush/Nubia, etc. so references are easily accessible! -repeating motifs in the original design are wings and moon, so used the god Khonsu as a reference -used youtube videos "The Black Pharaohs: The Kingdoms of Kush" and "The Imperial Kingdom Of Nubia" -I was least confident in find fabric patterns and shield+spear references, so I used whatever I found and combined it with the original design

Few individuals in Egypt’s history have aroused as much curiosity, and as much skepticism, as Ramses II, third pharaoh of the 19th dynasty, whom history dubbed Ramses the Great.

Today, Ramses II is probably best known for leaving behind a monumental set of works — palaces, temples, statues, stelae — each one extolling his pharaonic achievements.

Every battle was a mighty triumph, every building spectacular, every statue and public work magnificent, every act a near superhuman achievement.

Ramses’ family came to power as outsiders.

They were northerners hailing from the Nile Delta and rose through military service, rather than southerners rising from elite circles in Thebes.

To rally support, Ramses II used these massive monuments to appeal to the people as part of a campaign to proclaim his greatness for all to see.

Ramses lived around 90 years and ruled for almost 70.

Thanks to his building campaigns, Egyptologists know much about his public accomplishments, but questions about his wives and children still remain.

Great royal wives

One of the most striking aspects of Ramses II’s story is the women who surrounded him:

Great royal wives and concubines, secondary wives and daughters, whom he sometimes “married,” for political show or perhaps for real.

He produced an extraordinary number of sons and daughters:

Some records say as many as a hundred. Because of his long reign, many of his children predeceased him.

Out of all of his wives, only two were known to have had prominent roles:

Nefertari and Isetnofret, the first two named great royal wives.

While the former figures prominently in Egyptian sources and countless representations of her exist, little is known of the latter, almost as if Ramses wanted her hidden.

It is only natural to wonder about the reasons for such unequal treatment.

When he became co-regent with his father, Seti I, Ramses II received a palace in Memphis, just south of the Nile Delta, and a large harem, including the first two great royal wives.

The origins of Nefertari and Isetnofret are unknown but that has not prevented the wildest of speculation about them.

Everything suggests that Nefertari was Ramses II’s favorite wife. Her beauty is attested to in the statues and paintings in her tomb in the Valley of the Queens. 

However, it is uncertain what she actually looked like, since some images raise doubts about who is depicted.

For example, in Karnak, a small statue of Nefetari stands at the foot of a colossus representing Ramses II, her husband.

The colossus was later usurped by Pharaoh Pinedjem I, who had his name inscribed on it, and the features of both figures may have been modified.

Was only the name changed? Is that beautiful face still Nefertari’s? Egyptologists believe so.

Nefertari took part in official events alongside Ramses.

She was shown celebrating his coronation, in festivities of the god Min, and in Nebunenef’s enthronement as High Priest of Amun.

Her diplomacy culminated in a peace treaty between Ramses and the Hittites several years after the Battle of Kadesh (1274 B.C.) had resulted in a stalemate between the two powers.

Ramses II showed a clear predilection for Nefertari, devotion worthy of a great love story.

When he built the great temple of Abu Simbel, he made sure that Nefertari, then deceased, was on the facade, next to Tuya, his mother.

In this temple, Nefertari is transformed into Sopdet, the star Sirius, whose appearance presaged the Nile’s annual flooding.

Farther north, another smaller temple dug into rock is dedicated to Nefertari herself.

There, she is identified with the goddess Hathor. Carved into its facade is a tribute:

“Nefertari, she for whom the sun shines.”

Was Isetnofret the forgotten one? So it seems.

Until Nefertari died, around year 26 of Ramses II’s reign, Isetnofret’s likeness did not appear in the many temples the king built in Nubia, nor in those in Karnak and Luxor, where Nefertari is often portrayed.

Isetnofret was finally represented in some temples for her connection with her children.

Nefertari’s image may be seen in more places, but it was Isetnofret who bore her husband the two children closest to his heart.

Sons and daughters

Ramses II had a hundred or so sons and daughters with the wives in his harem.

Of his recognized children, some would play important roles, but only those born to Nefertari and Isetnofret appear on his monuments.

In the Nubian temple of Beit el Wali, a young Ramses, then co-regent with his father, Seti I, is shown suppressing a Nubian uprising.

The pharaoh’s royal chariot is flanked by two figures identified as Amenherkhepshef, his eldest child with Nefertari, and Khaemwaset, Isetnofret’s son.

Of all Ramses II’s sons, Khaemwaset is believed to have been his favorite.

Instead of taking up arms against his elder brother (also named Ramses), Khaemwaset became Grand Master of the Artisans of Ptah, a title in Memphite doctrine equivalent to High Priest of Amun in Thebes.

He also restored a number of pyramids in his father’s name. His work is still evident on the pyramid of Unas, from the 5th dynasty.

Khaemwaset also planned and directed the work of the “minor galleries,” the Serapeum at Saqqara, the collective tomb of the Apis, sacred oxen of Memphis.

Auguste Mariette’s 1850 excavation of the Serapeum revealed the mummy of a man named Khaemwaset, wearing a golden mask with several ushabtis.

It proved uncertain that it was the mummy of Ramses II’s son, and the location of Khaemwaset’s tomb remains unconfirmed. Much evidence suggests that it is in the necropolis of Saqqara.

The daughters of Ramses II’s great royal wives also held key positions in his court.

In fact, many became great royal wives themselves after marrying their own father.

It had become customary for 18th-dynasty pharaohs to marry their daughters.

While his great royal wife Tiye was alive, Amenhotep III married their daughter Sitamun.

Later, Akhenaten married at least two of the daughters he had with Queen Nefertiti.

No one knows if these marriages were consummated or purely ceremonial.

Ramses II appointed several daughters / great royal wives after the deaths of Nefertari and Isetnofret.

Bintanah (Isetnofret’s firstborn) was followed by Merytamon and Nebettawy (daughters of Nefertari) and Henutmire.

In addition to these daughters, other princesses outside the family also bore the title of Great Royal Wife, such as Maathorneferure, daughter of the Hittite king, and another Hittite princess whose name is unknown.

If Khaemwaset was Ramses II’s favorite son, everything points to Bintanath having been his preferred daughter.

She was given the titles of not only Great Royal Wife but also Lady of the Two Lands and Sovereign of Upper and Lower Egypt.

Bintanath occupies a privileged place on the facade of the temple of Abu Simbel. She and her sister Nebettawy appear on either side of the colossus.

Fractured legacy

Ramses had no problems siring heirs with his many wives during his long life, but these sons would be forced to be patient; their father held tightly to his throne for almost 70 years.

Ramses had placed his children liberally throughout Egypt’s bureaucracies, corporations, priesthood, and military to foster loyalty he did not naturally inspire.

He was an outsider, a northerner hailing from the Nile Delta, disconnected from the wealthy elites in southern Thebes.

Ramses’ source of strength rested on ties to, not the moneyed or religious classes, but the military. Placing his sons in powerful positions across Egypt helped strengthen Ramses’ hold in these areas.

By the time Ramses II died in 1213 B.C., he was around 90 years old and had outlived many of these sons.

Amenherkhepshef, Ramses’ oldest son and crown prince, died when he was 25 years old.

Khaemwaset also did not outlive his great father and died in his mid-50s around 1215 B.C.

It would be a child of Isetnofret, her son Merneptah, who was 13th in line, who succeeded Ramses.

Merneptah was around 60 years old, well past middle age, when he became pharaoh and donned Egypt’s double crown.

After decades of waiting in the wings to take power, Merneptah might have expected a stable reign, like his father’s, but his hopes were in vain.

During his 10-year reign, his troops were able to defend Egypt successfully from a series of attacks from enemies in the east and west.

But the seeds sown by Ramses II would lead to chaos after Merneptah’s death.

Rivals for the throne, some of whom may have been sons of Ramses II, pushed Egypt into a period of decline and civil war.

By around 1189 B.C., the 19th dynasty would come to an end.

Hate to say it but. Nubia: Queen of the Amazons mediocre at best. Its central conflict (Nubia vs her past) doesn’t work when Nubia’s past has only been so recently (ie mainly in this very comic) introduced. The fight between Nubia and Zillah has meaning for them, but not the audience. The comic is deeply boring to read as a result, with none of the emotional stakes hitting at all.

I also find the inclusion of Sekhmet in Nubia’s backstory to be more than a bit strange; like, I know they lampshade the fact that an Egyptian goddess playing a huge role in a culture of a nation on modern Madagascar is weird, but the one-sentence explanation of ‘the gods not being bound to one land’ is lazy as hell. I know jack shit about the history of Madagascar, but nothing I can find indicates a) the presence of Egyptian religious elements in any of the early kingdoms or b) any reason why there could be. Why bother setting Nubia’s past in Madagascar if you’re not actually going to engage with its real history? Obviously, cultural appropriation or just general cultural insensitivity is likely to occur without doing the proper research and such, and I get that this may be effort that couldn’t be expended, but if so why. Set Nubia’s past in a specific place. If you don’t have the time/money/whatever to research/hire consultants or sensitivity readers from that place. And if you want to use an Egyptian goddess as a major element of her backstory, why not make that specific place Egypt?

Aside from her connection to Sekhmet, which makes little sense and is likely only there because Sekhmet is going to play a role in the arc being build up in the Wonder Woman ongoing, I do like the idea of Nubia having been a princess-turned-warrior in her past life. This backstory easily and obviously leads into parallels with Diana’s backstory, which would be a good way to tie Nubia and Diana together and honor their history as literal sisters, even if the new continuity obviously doesn’t want to go in that direction. In addition, I appreciate the reversal of this first life with the one she’s currently living; if this comic had more time to build it up, I do think that this could’ve been very emotionally compelling. But this comic didn’t have that time, and as a result the arc of Nubia both learning about and coming to terms with her past feels incredibly rushed, and the fact that Sekhmet really shouldn’t be here is overwhelmingly distracting for me.

It’s not an actively terrible read, seeing Nubia act as queen and what her priorities are is interesting, I like the idea behind Nubia’s backstory, but overall this comic feels badly thought out and is rather boring.

So I heard that in any given month, DC usually has around 52 comics being released and obviously most of them are just Batman’s books for some reason, but I thought it will be a fun idea to try coming up with a list of 52 comics that should be released instead of what we got even though I don’t really read much comics outside of Bat-related books, but I did try to give a solo or a team-up book for as many deserving characters as I could

DC Comics highlights from the Superheroes, Orphans & Origins: 125 Years in Comics exhibition at the Foundling Museum, London. Getting to see legitimate 1940s issues was an amazing (and frankly very emotional!) experience but I was especially delighted by the ‘A Space for Everyone’ section highlighting Fawcett Comics’ Freddy Freeman and pages from last year’s Nubia: Real One graphic novel.

The exhibition's up ‘till August 2022 so if anybody’s in the area, I really can’t recommend it enough!

When Carolina left Guatemala, she had no real understanding of what she was heading toward, just a sense that she could not stay in her village any longer. There was not much electricity or water, and after the pandemic began, not much food.

The only people who seemed to be getting by were the families living off remittances from relatives in the United States. Carolina lived alone with her grandmother, whose health began failing. When neighbors started talking about heading north, she decided to join. She was 14.

“I just kept walking,” she said.

Carolina reached the U.S. border exhausted, weighing 84 pounds. Agents sent her to an H.H.S. shelter in Arizona, where a caseworker contacted her aunt, Marcelina Ramirez. Ms. Ramirez was at first reluctant: She had already sponsored two other relatives and had three children of her own. They were living on $600 a week, and she didn’t know Carolina.

When Carolina arrived in Grand Rapids last year, Ms. Ramirez told her she would go to school every morning and suggested that she pick up evening shifts at Hearthside. She knew Carolina needed to send money back to her grandmother. She also believed it was good for young people to work. Child labor is the norm in rural Guatemala, and she herself had started working around the second grade.

One of the nation’s largest contract manufacturers, Hearthside makes and packages food for companies like Frito-Lay, General Mills and Quaker Oats. “It would be hard to find a cookie or cracker aisle in any leading grocer that does not contain multiple products from Hearthside production facilities,” a Grand Rapids-area plant manager told a trade magazine in 2019.

General Mills, whose brands include Cheerios, Lucky Charms and Nature Valley, said it recognized “the seriousness of this situation” and was reviewing The Times’s findings. PepsiCo, which owns Frito-Lay and Quaker Oats, declined to comment.

Three people who until last year worked at one of the biggest employment agencies in Grand Rapids, Forge Industrial Staffing, said Hearthside supervisors were sometimes made aware that they were getting young-looking workers whose identities had been flagged as false.

“Hearthside didn’t care,” said Nubia Malacara, a former Forge employee who said she had also worked at Hearthside as a minor.

In a statement, Hearthside said, “We do care deeply about this issue and are concerned about the mischaracterization of Hearthside.” A spokesman for Forge said it complied with state and federal laws and “would never knowingly employ individuals under 18.”

Summary: Jimin and Nubia go on a date to the cat café.

Nubia scooped the little cat up off the floor.  Jimin had brought her to a cat café today, and she was thrilled.  There were cats everywhere, and she loved it.  She didn’t often get to just relax because of how much she taught, so this was Heaven for her.  She glanced down as a fluffy paw was set against her thigh.  A kitten was climbing onto her lap.

“Jimin, look at this one!”

Jimin was standing between all the cats a few feet away from her.  He glanced down at the black kitten with white spots that was curled up in her lap now.  He smiled. 

“He’s pretty.”

“Isn’t he?  I should get a cat.”

“You like cats?”

Nubia nodded. 

“I like them too,” he laughed.  He crossed the room and squatted down in front of her and ran his hands over the kitten’s fur.

“This is really nice.  School has been insane lately.  Since the school year was ending, I was up working so late every night trying to get everything graded.”

“I’m glad you get a few days off right now.”

“Me too!  I was hoping to go hang out with Zelda sometime soon.  I haven’t gotten to see her much since Zoro was born.”

“Well, having a baby is a lot of work.  I haven’t seen Tae a lot either.”

“I’m sure they love it.  Zelda was so excited when she told us all that she was pregnant.”

Jimin smiled as another cat wandered over and sat itself in his lap. “What about you?  You want kids?”

Nubia nodded. “Definitely.  I love my nieces.  I’m sure you know that after meeting Kema and Lateefah, though.  I’d love to have kids of my own.” She giggled. “I wish I lived in Egypt still sometimes.  Kema is getting so big!  She was a newborn when I moved, and she’s seven now!  I haven’t gotten to meet either of Omar’s girls yet,” she frowned. “Zahra has said hi to me over video call a few times, but she’s never really met me.”

“You’ll get to meet her when we go in April, right?”

Nubia nodded again. “I can’t wait,” she admitted. “They’re all so adorable.  I’d bet they’re even cuter in person.”

The two of them sat in silence for a few moments as they pet the cats.

“Is there anything else you’d like to do today?” Jimin asked.

“I’d love to get some food.  Something savory.  My kids were bringing me sweets occasionally, and I haven’t had any time to cook or order takeout, so I’ve just been eating whatever I have around my apartment.  I want some real food!  The only time I’ve eaten anything good recently was the night I cooked dinner for Tae and Zelda.”

“We should cook together sometime.  The food you guys made last May was amazing.  Maybe we could try something like that again.”

“Yeah.  Not now though.”

Jimin laughed. “Of course not.  We could go get some bibimbap?”

“Oh my gosh, yes!  That sounds amazing.”

“Should we go, then?”

She glanced up at him. “Can we stay with the kittens for a little longer?  I have coffee to finish, anyways.”

He chuckled. “Sure.  Just don’t give the coffee to the cats, though.”

The two of them wandered around town after they’d finished dinner.  It was snowing outside, so they had to stay close to each other for warmth.

“I can’t believe we met two years ago already,” Nubia laughed, pulling her scarf over her nose.

“Me neither.  It feels like we were in London just yesterday.”

“Doesn’t it?  I’ll be meeting my third class of students in about a month.  Isn’t that crazy?”

He nodded. “Jungkook’s getting married in the fall.  That seems surreal.”

“He’s been dating Astrid as long as I’ve known him, so I’m not too surprised.”

“Well, I met you before I met Astrid.”

“Really?” Nubia asked, shocked.

“Yeah.  I met her at Jin and Jasmine’s wedding, which was a month after we had the incident at the restaurant.”

“Wow.  Well, I’m flattered.”

The two of them walked on for a bit.  The streets of Seoul had less traffic than usual with how heavy the snow was coming down this evening.

“Do you ever get snow in Egypt?”

Nubia scoffed. “No!  I was shocked when I woke up at my aunt’s place one morning and the windows were white!  It was such an odd experience.  I like it, though.  It’s pretty.  And I’ve gotten used to the cold by now.”

“That’s good.  Korea’s not the warmest place out there.”

“It’s certainly warmer than London was most days!”

It wasn’t long before they were walking through a park, and Nubia glanced down at their feet as they left indents in the snow.

“We should take walks like this more often,” she smiled.

“Should we?”

“Yeah.  I enjoy being with you.  We don’t get to see each other a lot during the school year.”

“Well, maybe that could change.”

She glanced up at him and smiled. “What do you mean?”

He turned to her then and knelt down in front of her.  He pulled a ring box out of his pocket and popped it open. “Nubia, I want to spend the rest of my life with you.  Will you marry me?”

She grinned from ear to ear. “Yes!  I’ll marry you, Jimin.”

He smiled and pulled the ring out of the box, sliding it onto her finger.  It was a small emerald nestled onto a silver band.

“It’s stunning, Jimin.”

“You think so?  I saw it and thought it was something that would look great on you.”

She grinned and tugged him onto his feet. “I love you, Jimin.” Then she kissed him soundly on his lips.
