Toxic
The land is thriving. It is green. Life spills from the very pores of rock and dirt. Creatures of great intelligence live in harmony with those of their kind, and those who are not. They travel across the land with the reverence it deserves; no plant is crushed, no fruit picked unless it will be eaten in that moment, no animal killed without a whisper of thanks as every bit of it is used as is intended. The world is as it should be.
But there are places still; places that should not be. Structures of unnatural stone and glass, cracked and corroded with a layer of grime so thick it must be peeled away. Entry here is forbidden. It is understood. In the way that the darkest depths of the water and the tallest peaks of the mountains are forbidden. There is no rule, no communication among the creatures to warn them; they all know to never venture here through base instinct.
Though perhaps the markings do help. The green lines that were likely bright and toxic once upon a time. The black symbols that invoke a fear none of them quite understand. Jagged spires reaching towards the sky, now covered in moss and little ferns that are a touch too green. Tiny streams of water that will never be drunk from. It is clear water, it looks fresh, but it is tainted with the stench of sickness.
If the markings and monuments were not enough, then the glow certainly would be. For when darkness descends upon the land, those places light up. The very ground becomes blue. Orange dots the leaves. Thick vines cast a sickly green over the stone just peaking through the plants now alive with something other.
Yet, that is not all. For one small creature, too curious for its own good–or perhaps simply born without the innate fear, for there are some who tend to wander too far–ventures into the depths of one such place. This one creature covers its feet and hands, and it explores. It brushes against the blue glow, drawing back to find that ooze has now stuck to its skin. It feels the squelch and crunch under its feet as sludge and things that are far too dry coat the wrappings.
It wanders further still, traveling through the night. Until it comes across a place so bright its eye stalks hurt. The green is so vibrant, so toxic, that it can feel its fur mimicking the colour. It ventures closer, ignoring the burning and writhing under its skin.
The green is mesmerizing. There is a hum coming from the depths. It travels over its ears, into its brain, and there it wriggles until it has made a little nest. The creatures giggles, the sound warbling through the air in a visible yellow. It laughs, pink bubbles floating towards the green as it responds in waves of neon blue. Colours that the creature could never even imagine flit to and fro, and it spins. The world spins with it.
Then it bursts. Everything is white, specs of nothing between the frames of reality. The creature’s body is lost to it, floating endlessly. Still there is no fear. What does it have to fear in a place such as this?
The green crawls towards it, taking the prone form of a creature so young it salivates at the potential it contains. The body burns to ash, eaten away by heat and the toxicity that flows through this place like blood through veins. It is consumed by the green.
When day breaks, a pack of the creatures mourn their loss. They mourn the one with no fear, who could not feel the danger stemming from that place, who did not heed the warnings placed there by the beings who once lived. They mourn, and then they continue on their journeys.
They do not see the thing that crawls from the glow among the next dark night. They do not see the white eyes, brighter than the sun, peering through the gloom and heating living things with its gaze. Twisted, gnarled feet, now oozing a neon blue, char the plants beneath them. A clawed hand, now turquoise, topples a tree as it attempts to steady the body not yet used to its new self. A gaping mouth grins, green tongue darting out to run over gleaming white teeth. Its mind is aflutter with new possibilities, with a new purpose.
It did not heed the warnings. Now it is the warning.
