Starts and Moves through 2023/03/31
my favorite color is coffee
Don’t look at me like that. Most of my non-music-listening activities in the shank of this month, and some music-related ones actually, fall under the heading of “op-sec, motherfucker, do you speak it.” Those who know, know. Those who have not achieved this level of clearance can just stay outside the circle. Exceptionally pleased to report that not only is Drug Church real (for a copy of my…

Green Man Festival 2023
Green Man Festival - 17th - 20th August 2023
Eve Appleton Band is this year’s Green Man Rising Winner!
Cardiff band Hyll will also claim their spot on the Rising Stage as finalists too, congratultions to them.
Green Man is thrilled to announce that Eve Appleton Band is its Green Man Rising winner for 2023, and will bag a slot on its Mountain Stage this August.
The Bristol-based act beat off competition from a record-breaking 3,000 hopefuls and over 30,000 votes to claim the annual award after they were announced as the judges favourite at the virtual final.
The Dorset born songwriter’s brand of progressive folk music won over a panel of industry experts including Hayley Morrison, Ivano Maggiulli, Kate French-Morris, Liam Keightly, Nuha Ruby Ra, Steve Nickols, Tom Baker and Ben Coleman.
Following a rise to prominence on the UK live music scene, Eve is now set to claim her place on the biggest stage at Wales’ largest music festival alongside the likes of First Aid Kit and Self Esteem.
Eve is herself a lifelong Green Man fan, having attended regularly as a child from its beginnings as a much smaller event held at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, just outside Hay-on-Wye
She said: “I knew music was my life because of Green Man - I cannot believe I now get to set foot on the mountain stage with my best friends. To everyone at Green Man Festival, the judges board of GM Rising and Green Man trust for providing musicians like us this amazing opportunity, we are forever grateful.”
Delighted to be announcing this year’s Green Man Rising winner, Managing Director and festival owner Fiona Stewart said: "I want to thank all those involved in Green Man Rising. The judges all agreed that the standard of entries was so incredibly high this year, and I’m so pleased for Eve Appleton Band! They really will make a spectacular addition to our line-up.”
The Green Man Rising competition celebrates the best emerging talent every year. Each entry is listened to by the Green Man team before a long list is put out to public vote in order to find the final five, which this year attracted more than 30,000 votes.
Cardiff band Hyll and other finalists will also get play at the festival on Green Man’s Rising Stage as a result of their success in the competition too. Other Welsh acts confirmed for the 2023 event include Cardiff duo, Rogue Jones, who will be performing at the Walled Garden stage on Thursday as part of an all Welsh language day in the Walled Garden, alongside acts such as Aisha Vaughan and Caldicot’s The Bug Club.
The magic of Green Man lies not just in its scenery and music. Made up of 10 individual areas, the festival also offers a diverse range of events to accompany its incredible line-up, boasting art installations spread throughout the tranquil valley, a beer and cider tent to enjoy a crisp Welsh pint, an Ancient Egypt-themed area of discovery and exploration for the little folk, a relaxation and workshop space for the teenagers, plus science engagement area Einstein’s Garden. Further line ups of music, science, film, comedy & literature will be revealed in the coming months.
The Settlement Stage
This years Greenman Settlement Stage has been carefully curated by Libertino Records Gruff Owen with Angel Hotel, Angharad, Cynefin, Edie Bens, Elin Grace, Gille, Half Happy, Ivan Moult, Joe Kelly & The Royal Pharmacy, Mari Mathias, Red Telephone, Siula, Sonny Winnebego, Spencer Segelov And The Great Paintings, The Family Battenberg, Voya and YNYS all gracing the stage.
Festival goers who have purchased a Settler’s Pass, a special ticket which includes discounts on local heritage sites, galleries, castles and more, will arrive on Monday 14th August for a week in the Welsh valleys as part of their Green Man 2023 experience. Tickets for this year’s festival sold out in just four hours in September 2022, following a fantastic 20th anniversary celebration in the Welsh Mountains just weeks before.

Uniquely, Green Man refuses sponsorship so that independent Welsh food & beverage producers can be offered and curational freedom retained. The festival is comprised of ten unique areas – from comedy, literature, theatre, film and art, and is the only large UK festival where a woman has majority ownership.
Green Man Festival is a melting pot of Welsh, national and international artistic talent and a creator of opportunities. The Green Man Trust charity extends the festival’s artistic, educational, and cultural ambitions by cultivating creative development, showcase and training opportunities within the arts, sciences and local communities. Over the last three years, 10,000+ people have been supported by Green Man Trust, £16,000 donated to Welsh food banks in 2022 in response to cost of living crisis, £3,000 donated for Ukrainian war relief, £16,000 has been raised for Welsh vulnerable people affected by storm Dennis flood, £100,000 was spent to commission 223 artists during the pandemic and over 100 community projects have been supported.

Haim have released a new single called 'Lost Track.' A few weeks ago, a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed music video for the song first debuted in theaters before screenings of Licorice Pizza, the PTA film that (of course) the youngest Haim, Alana, stars in. Per a post on the trio’s Instagram, the track and video came together in just a few days after while Anderson was shooting Alana for a W magazine cover. Here’s their explanation, where they note that the song was inspired by the John O’Hara novel Appointment In Samarra: “I’ll never get back what I lost track of” We had that line written for the last year but could never figure out what to do with it. We kept writing it down, not knowing where it should live. Cut to PTA shooting the director’s cut issue for @wmag with our baby sister on the cover! An opportunity arose to do a quick music component while shooting the story. Paul mentioned having the book Appointment in Samarra as a possible direction. So we did some digging around the book and were inspired by the scene where the main character throws a drink in someone’s face at a country club. We were inspired by the idea of someone doing something so drastic to get out of a situation they felt uncomfortable in – just to feel something. We finally remembered that lyric and wrote and recorded the song and shot the whole thing in a few days! Anyway, felt fun to do something very collaborative/ off the cuff." [via Stereogum]

Nuha Ruby Ra has released a new single, ‘My Voice’. Following up on last year’s How To Move EP, it comes alongside a new visual, which you can check out above. Speaking about the track, she explains: “'My Voice' is post How To Move, Pre everything else I’ll do, I’m in the waiting room. I’m exploring what I can do. I play all the instruments and build surreal sonic architecture that’ll make you move differently. There’s a rave in the bat cave. Don’t be fooled by the beginning, the middle or the end.” [via Dork]

Isle of Wight risers Coach Party have shared their new single 'Weird Me Out'. 'Weird Me Out' follows their feminist rocker 'FLAG' in September last year, and it turns over a fresh page for the band. A buzzsaw anthem, 'Weird Me Out' takes early 90s alt-rock tropes and smears them in bubblegum, resulting in a potent rebel-pop mixture. Stripped from incoming EP Nothing Is Real - out on April 29, y'know - you can check out 'Weird Me Out' above. [via Clash]

Ashe has returned with new single 'Another Man's Jeans', marking her first new material of 2022. 'Another Man's Jeans' is Ashe's first new material since releasing her debut album Ashlyn in May last year, and is teamed with a Jason Lester-directed video. "'Another Man’s Jeans' is about unashamed and uninhibited confidence, loosening up and having a good time," Ashe explains. "It sounds like what carefree feels like. It’s sexy! And loud! And fun! It’s a reminder to not take life too seriously." [via Line Of Best Fit]

Priya Ragu has shared her new single 'Illuminous'. Out now, it's a song that bursts with energy and light, an attempt to channel a point of inspiration. It's the sound of Priya embracing life in all its glory, matching glossy R&B elements against aspects of her own Tamil heritage. The video is a feast of imagery, with Priya Ragu subverting 'strong man' pictures to showcase other aspects of her own femininity. Priya comments... "I believe we are all beings of light. It’s a journey that starts before we enter this world and continues while we have this human experience, and then remains after we leave this earth. I also believe that we all have this one true unique gift that could bring us back to our true selves. Once you have found that, the light within you shines so bright that you become invincible. This is how I feel at this stage in my life and with this song I want to encourage others to find that one thing. Apart from all that, it’s also a turn up song, so you know what you gotta do!" The full video was directed by Silence - who has worked with Sigrid, IAMDDB and Yxng Bane. [via Clash]

Los Angeles teen punk band The Linda Lindas find strange company, or maybe none at all, on their new single 'Talking to Myself' and its accompanying visual. The sharp pop-punk cut from the group rips right into feelings of loneliness and self-doubt that swirl together to create a never-ending spiral of human disconnection. Though singer-guitarist Lucia keeps circling around the “bad decisions” and “all the wrong directions” in the lyrics, she ultimately determines to find someone to help release the recurring thoughts from her head. In a statement, Lucia said, “I’m always looking back on conversations and going, ‘Oh, I should have said this, I should have said that.’ But it’s also about needing other people, not just for reassurance, but because we’ve all learned from the pandemic that you need other people to talk to in order to stay sane.” The video, directed by Ryan Baxley, is based on the “Living Doll” episode of The Twilight Zone where a father is plagued by his daughter’s seemingly possessed Talky Tina toy. The black-and-white visual begins innocently enough with the band members treating their new dolls to matching outfits, boba tea, and a trip to their favorite record shop before the dolls’ malevolence is awakened after being excluded from The Linda Lindas’ band practice. What follows is a horrific but often-hilarious battle between the band and the all-doll group renamed The Lil Lindas. While the song makes a strong case against loneliness, the visual proves there should always be caution with the company you keep, especially the haunted inanimate kind. [via Consequence]

Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, the two singers behind the indie-pop project Lucius, are prolific collaborators, and they’ve recently toured and recorded with people like the War On Drugs and Brandi Carlile. Next month, Lucius will return with Second Nature, their first album since 2016. Brandi Carlile and Dave Cobb co-produced the LP, and it’s got backup vocals from Carlile and Sheryl Crow. We’ve already heard the early singles 'Next To Normal' and 'White Lies,' and now Lucius have shared another song. 'Heartbursts' is a synthy, upbeat track that seems likely to appear in at least one prominent TV commercial before the year ends. The track’s got a flashy video from director Teresa “Toogie” Barcelo. The clip tells the story of a bunch of random strangers at a swap meet who all start dancing together and who all have some kind of transcendent experience. Wolfe and Laessig get in on the choreography. [via Stereogum]

Magdalena Bay put out one of the most exciting pop albums of 2021, Mercurial World. Still reeling in its success, the Los Angeles duo have shared the music video for the highlight 'Dreamcatching'. Additionally, Magdalena Bay mapped out a run of US tour dates for 2022. To bring the fantasy of 'Dreamcatching' to life, director Felix Geen used VQGAN+CLIP, a pioneering technology that uses a collection of neural networks working in unison to generate images based on input text and images. The result finds Magdalena Bay in a vivid, distorted otherworld that blends the lines between live-action and animation. “‘Dreamcatching’ is about all the places you want to know and all the places you’ll never go,” the band explained in a statement. “The video uses AI neural networks to create the landscapes and worlds we long for in the lyrics, a computer’s interpretation of our dreams.” [via Consequence]

Dick Move haven't been putting their feet up during these lean times for live shows, instead focussing punk energy into a fierce new video for 'Ladies Night', from their NZ Top 40 chart-hitting 2020 debut album Chop!. Partly filmed on home turf at Whammy Bar and featuring a cavalcade of key figures from our music community ready to cause serious damage with Warriors-style weapons (baseball bat, whip, nunchucks), director Stella Reid's and the 2113 Creatives teams's tough as fuck visuals should make creepy barflies tremble with fear. With the announcement of a sophomore album on it’s way, singer, songwriter and acclaimed storyteller Alex the Astronaut shares a personal and heart-felt new single 'Octopus', a track that is metaphoric but also true to a deep appreciation of the sea creature.  With inspiration drawing from the artists snorkeling expeditions whilst in the midsts of Sydney lockdowns, 'Octopus' is driven by guitar plucks, succinct drums, quirky and fun bubble noises and synthy accents, allowing Alex’s melodies to glide effortlessly through surging waves of life’s complexities to a calm expansive horizon of self-discovery. On the track, Alex shares “A group of octopus can be called octopuses, octopi, or octopods. I like octopods the best. Octopods can change colour to blend in with their surroundings, regrow limbs, and decorate their houses with shells. They are amazing geniuses that live amongst us. Growing up we learn that only people that show a certain set of skills can be called clever, or valuable to society. When I was diagnosed with ASD last year I was worried people would look at me funny and think that I don’t fit when they found out, which they do sometimes but I learnt that we all have a different set of superpowers, like our friends the octopods. All of us need a little help from our friends sometimes and all of us have a superpower that could help the world grow. If we stopped worrying about how much everyone does or doesn’t fit I think we’d all be braver, more curious and much kinder.” Known for an ability to combine the playful with the profound, the forthcoming album How to Grow A Sunflower Underwater promises to be more vulnerable than ever before, Alex expressing that “I started to see that I needed to keep being that vulnerable if I wanted to make something that contributed to the world.” [via Pilerats]

mxmtoon has shared the video for her latest track ‘Mona Lisa’. ‘Mona Lisa’ arrived at the start of February. mxmtoon had previously released the EP true colours (from Life is Strange) back in September 2021. Speaking about the track at the time of release, Maia said “I think we all daydream at some point in our lives of diving into our favorite stories and finding ourselves in the pages. We all deserve the chance to feel like we’re worthy of a spotlight every once in a while, and ‘Mona Lisa’ is meant to express that sentiment exactly.” [via Dork]

Iranian-Dutch singer and songwriter Sevdaliza follows up the release of her latest EP Raving Dahlia with a music video for the new single 'EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING'. The music video features breathtaking cinematic visuals complemented by an enthralling narrative that showcases Sevdaliza’s iconic cyborg character. A cold emotionless dystopian future world is beautifully brought to life by creative film director Sharif Abdel Mawla. Sevdaliza’s ethereal voice glides over an electronic music dance-inspired backing track. [via the Dapper Mobster]

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Anna Bates has shared her first single with Neon Gold Records, 'Last Man On Earth,' along with an accompanying music video directed by Jax Anderson. 'Last Man on Earth' is a playful take on the apocalypse, envisioned through the eyes of Bates, its only survivor. A charming acoustic arrangement and sweeping folk harmonies set the stage while Bates explores the ruins of civilization, speeding down the highway, stealing jewels, and moving into a cathedral. However, isolation eventually sets in and disrupts the post-apocalyptic joyride一 But even before I did all that I planned / I’d probably go crazy and then I’d turn mad / And I’d give me some pills that probably wouldn’t work / And that would be the end of the last man on Earth. Bates says of the track, “To me, one of the most important aspects of creating music is the story telling, and I wanted to craft something whimsical, wacky, and interesting to listen to. Thus, the birth of 'Last Man on Earth'- my post-apocalyptic, mid pandemic masterpiece, inspired completely by Will Forte’s unfinished TV show. In the middle of mass death, strange news headlines, and quarantine, I started to feel nuts, and began dreaming of being the last person on earth… I had started writing a musical anthem for the introvert. Of course, as quarantine and the pandemic went on and I dreamt of being alone, I realized that psychosis was bound to hit at some point- Turning my mid-pandemic folk comedy song, into a borderline Shakespeare tragedy where everyone dies and I eventually live out my days waiting to kick the bucket. If you are wondering “But what does it all mean?”, I hate to break it to you, but it doesn’t get any deeper than it’s just a fun song to dance, drive, and die to.” [via Under the Radar Mag]

Scene Queen has shared a raging new single and video, 'Pink Rover'. Out now via Hopeless Records, the genre-melding track tackles harassment and catcalling, with Scene Queen (real name Hannah Collins) sharing: “When I wrote this song I had been living in Hollywood for six years. Women that live in major cities understand that there’s a certain level of harassment you deal with every single day through catcalling. The amount of times I have had to call friends and pretend I was on the phone with my boyfriend to avoid feeling unsafe or objectified is honestly a traumatising amount. So this song was written to explain the rage I feel towards a society that allows women to be treated that way.” She continues, “When I walked in the studio with my male producers and cowriter, they had already been working on a track idea that involved a knife sound and ironically I had literally just been whistled at getting out of my car to walk into the session, so it all clicked. And having two guys in the session was honestly the perfect test audience for the lyrics. Something that you know is attacking a very specific audience and if you’re not the target you can tell I’m not fully serious. I wanted to get the point across but have a sense of humour about it because I think having a sense of humour makes hard topics easier to digest. And of course in Scene Queen fashion, I had to throw in some pink.” [via Kerrang!]

If Mia Rodriguez were a color, she would radiate rainbows, bubblegum pink, and lemon drop yellow. A notion heightened by her latest single 'Shut Up,' which exudes all of these things and more. Intersecting elements of electronic, dance, alternative, indie-pop, and K-pop, Rodriguez's newest effort offers something for everyone. Whether you find yourself folding laundry, sitting in traffic, battling the world's woes, or trudging through an awful Hinge date, one can't help but find themselves effortlessly body rolling to this impressively catchy tune. 'Shut Up' deftly showcases Rodriguez's confidence and self-assurance as she sings, "And I don't want what the others want / What the others want / Is what I already have," a mindset that we should all learn to embrace. With the world currently on fire, 'Shut Up' is an instantaneous earworm that at the very least provides a blast of color to any gray day. "I wanted to feel like a Billion Dollar Bitch. I needed a song that can hype me and my fans up and just bring more confidence out into the world," says Rodriguez. "I wanted to bring a really bad bitch energy to this shitty, sick world right now." [via Ones to Watch]

Irish country-pop sensation CMAT has unveiled the typically comedic visuals for new single 'Every Bottle (Is My Boyfriend)', taken from her new album. The infectious, up-tempo track finds CMAT in typically candid form on this hook-laden nugget that pulls on the heartstrings and screams 'future karaoke classic'. "This is a song about being defiantly chaotic, because being that, an agent of chaos, is something quite defiant for a girl to do," CMAT says. "It almost didn't make the album. But then I managed to shoehorn in a line about the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) and I felt happy it was representative of my drinking habits." [via Hot Press]

Buzzing alternative pop duo BETWEEN FRIENDS—Brandon and Savannah Hudson—have revealed a new single, 'more'. The new track marks the first release under their newly minted deal with 10K Projects. On the track, the brother-and-sister group’s hypnotic harmonies levitate above sparse beatcraft threaded together with delicate guitar. It hovers towards the bold, breathy, and bright refrain, “I think I could use some more of you…I don’t know you, but I really need to.” The accompanying visual opens with a grainy VHS-style clip akin to some long-lost seventies sci-fi video complete with a blue-haired spacebound starlet urging to “Sit back, relax, enjoy.” The clip intercuts psychedelic vignettes of Brandon and Savannah, ebbing and flowing with the tension and release of the track. About 'more,' they commented, “When making ‘more,’ we imagined a suburban love story taking place in an alternate reality. We wanted to modify our memories from childhood, our old neighborhood, the things we used to do to occupy our time.” [via Prelude Press]

After witnessing how "women face so much abuse in the name of religion," singer Andie Case strikes back with a new video that she tells Hollywood Life is the start of her sharing her story "in ways that I never have.” While the chorus of Andie Case‘s new song might make 'I Think I’m God' sound like a sacrilegious sex jam (“I think I’m god / You better praise me / You better get down on your knees / Oh baby boy”), a deeper interpretation of the text comes via the song’s music video. In the visual for 'I Think I’m God,' Andie deals with all the complexities and contradictions of being a woman in the eye of patriarchal religion. In one scene, she’s dressed in white and virginal – in the next, she’s clad in red and gyrating like forbidden fruit. “‘I think I’m God’ symbolizes the death of how I was raised to believe what a good religious woman should be,” Andie shares with HollywoodLife. “The song itself is all about self-empowerment, but it definitely is targeted towards women. Women especially face so much judgment and abuse in the name of religion. So this is my artistic interpretation of that. I’m letting go of the things that constantly made me question my worth, added to insecurities, sexuality, all of the judgment, and using it to empower myself and my fellow women.” The track is empowering, and that message can be found in the song’s heart. “They say ‘girl, don’t have an ego’ / ‘Please don’t run your mouth like that’ / But all these f-ckin people / I wish they could feel how I feel.” It’s a clever message that often isn’t associated with such a vibrant pop song. But it makes sense – Andie Case is not your average pop star. [via Hollywood Life]

Finnish starlet Ina Forsman is back with a beautifully nostalgic soul sound. Inspired by a conversation that Ina had with her partner, new single ‘Don’t Lose Today’ is all about fulfilling love and devastating inner struggles. "We live in a world where we worry so much about the future that far too often we forget to enjoy the present moment. We should remind ourselves more often that as soon as we arrive where our longing is taking us today, we will be thinking about the future in the same way that we are already thinking about it today.” [via Alfitude]

An artist who has never been afraid to experiment with her work, Rhys seems to have finally found her sound through the release of new EP Thanks a lot now I can’t smile. Featuring co-production by Elias Kapari, this creative and playful record takes inspiration from growing up in the hipster nest that is Portland. Rhys says: “This EP is a projection of my frustration in life and relationships; filled to the brim with passive aggressive jokes, defence mechanisms, pettiness and sadness. It’s me looking back and admitting my flaws and worst tendencies, but also realising i’m not always fully responsible for how things turned out. You can’t predict how people will treat you, or how you’ll react to situations in life. You don’t always have to be reasonable or grateful, sometimes things just feel shitty. Relationships end, they leave, you leave, depressions happen. I found myself asking everyone I met if my feelings were normal, seeking some type of solace in that others could relate to my lows, but that’s never really enough. So instead I wrote songs, hoping they in turn could help others. I’m just writing about life and every teeny tiny emotion in between.” [via Alftitude]

Montreal's queer bilingual pop icon Maryze announces her much-anticipated debut LP, 8, and shares a stormy-sweet pop R&B single 'Experiments' on March 3. If Caroline Polacheck and Charli XCX collaborated to make a 2000s club banger, you'd get pretty close to 'Experiments'... but not quite. A dark and sexy Y2K club banger produced by Jeshway, 'Experiments' is inspired by Timbaland beats and ominous but fun tracks like Nelly Furtado’s 'Maneater'. Combining R&B beats with a wash of dreamy harmonies, infectious dark pop hooks, smooth vocal runs, and layers upon layers of synths, 'Experiments' dives head first into the awe-inspiring sonic universe that is Maryze. Thematically, 'Experiments' focuses on sexuality, taboos, and shame, exploring vulnerability in intimacy and how sometimes letting go of control allows us to truly be in control. Dancey and grindable, Experiments shows off Maryze’s playful side, featuring breathy vocals, and spoken studio session snippets à la Britney Spears. Addictive, delicious, and impossible to put down, 'Experiments' is the ear candy you've been waiting for. Accompanying the single is an equally enthralling music video directed by iconic analogue filmmaker, Ariana Molly. The music video for 'Experiments' lands us in a mysterious, sensual and surreal universe, oscillating between intimate close ups and dramatic wide shots, soft blur and sharp focus. Abandoning the desire to anchor in reality, it favors a hedonistic space starring Maryze and her masked accomplices. In a nod to the early 2000s, where pop icons were unapologetically sexy and powerful, the feeling of strength and sensual divinity oozes from its pores.

Following on from the glittering response to their brilliant standalone single ‘Gymnopédie’ last year, French sibling duo Black Lilys now make their euphoric return with the vibrant new offering ‘Invisible Strings’. Channelling more of the same rich and atmospheric direction they have cultivated for themselves over the years, ‘Invisible Strings’ sees them return with a broad and effortless finesse. With a smooth and driven direction that slowly rises and grows with every chord, their newest release marks a stunning reprieve for the pair as they prepare to release more new music throughout the year ahead.
