I saw this on a new release promotional email and thought "well shit, that looks like my life, I should Investigate That™," only to realize it was a brand new hardback and I didn't want to pay $29 for 200 pages of information. Since I found out about it on release day, my next thought was, "Oh, I can check and see if my library has any copies!! We love supporting our libraries in this house!!"
Reader: They did Not.
But! I did find the "request a book" option on their website, and I entered this book, and I got a robocall within a week saying my hold was ready to be picked up! Y'all!! The library literally ordered this book for me (it was stamped into circulation one (1) day before they called me!), and now I have it to read! I love libraries!!

Today, we'll be discussing the FDA's guidance on "Excellent Source of Fiber" and "Good Source of Fiber" claims found on food packaging. Understanding these claims can help you make informed choices when selecting products that contribute to your daily fiber intake. Let's dive in!
FDA Guidance on "Excellent Source of Fiber" and "Good Source of Fiber"
The FDA has established specific criteria for food manufacturers to use the terms "Excellent Source of Fiber" and "Good Source of Fiber" on their packaging. These claims are intended to inform consumers about the fiber content of a particular food product.
Here's a breakdown of the FDA's guidance:
1. "Excellent Source of Fiber": - To make an "Excellent Source of Fiber" claim, a food product must contain at least 20% of the Daily Value (DV) for fiber per serving. - The DV for fiber is 28 grams per day based on a 2,000 calorie diet. - Therefore, a food item must contain at least 5.6 grams of fiber per serving to qualify as an "Excellent Source of Fiber."

When shopping for food products, the "Excellent Source of Fiber" and "Good Source of Fiber" claims can be helpful indicators of a product's fiber content. By understanding the FDA's guidance, you can make informed choices to meet your daily fiber needs. this probably has a lot to do with my mom being one of those diet fanatics and constantly cycling through diets and subjecting me to several of them when I was younger, but nutrition science is one of those things I will have an infinite amount of skepticism on. like I know vegetables are good for you and greasy fast food is probably not that good for you but beyond that whenever I hear someone claim to know What Are The Best Foods For People To Eat I’m literally never going to believe them ever regardless of what their qualifications are

Gourdon lives in a Spirit Halloween
It is late September, but you've been looking forward to this since June. Finally, finally, your local Spirit Halloween has opened-- you're not lucky enough to live near one of the locations that opens in July.
You approach the store, full of glee, cautiously hopeful that you'll actually find something decent this year among the chintzy capes and culturally insensitive costume kits. You have a carefully calculated budget and it's burning a hole in your wallet.
Past the display animatronics, through a puff of fog machine smoke, you cross the hallowed threshold and are immediately assailed by the chatter of excited children and a tinny rendition of the Time Warp playing from some unseen speaker.
It's go time.
You carefully step around a pile of boxes-- merchandise that is being snapped up faster than it can be put out-- and make your way to the mask section. You roll your eyes at the cheap, oversized cardboard likenesses of this election cycle's candidates (and an inexplicable llama and crying baby done in the same style), and begin perusing the "movie quality" monster masks.
At this moment, you are briefly reminded of a particularly traumatizing episode of the Goosebumps television series, and you chide yourself. Of course nothing like that is going to happen in this commercial hellscape of a novelty store.
And that's when you feel something grab your shirt and pull you backward into the rack of wigs behind you. You don't have time to yelp or call out, and as you squeeze your eyes shut and brace yourself for impact, you feel...
...Nothing?
Or at least, you don't feel dozens of metal pegs digging into your back, as you'd been expecting. You feel... kind of chilly. There's a dampness in the air suddenly, and you come to realize that the bustle of the cramped, stuffy Spirit store has been replaced by an eerie silence.
You crack open an eye, and for a moment, you can't make sense of your surroundings. This... is not a Spirit Halloween-- at least, you don't think it is.
Instead, you find yourself in a clearing. The ground beneath you is soft and squelchy, and as you shift your weight, you feel it shift in kind beneath you. Strange plants and heavy mosses grow around towering, twisted trees, and for just a moment, you wonder if maybe you've passed out. Maybe, just maybe, you've fallen unconscious and this is some kind of strange dream.
This is the theory you decide to go with as you also realize... whoever pulled on your shirt a moment ago is nowhere to be found. At this point, you're not even sure if someone was ever there at all.
You stand there as you try to get your bearings, bewildered and unnerved, until something moves in the corner of your eye and catches your attention. The silence feels heavier, the humid air seems thicker, and an eerie green light flickers several feet above a nearby tree stump.
"Well now," a voice, smooth as velvet, hums in your ear. "You look like you'll be very fun to play with."

#tw disordered eating#personal#i have a consultation appt coming up soon with a bariatric weight loss program and i’m v nervy#i’ve always been fat and fairly unhealthy bc i didn’t have access to good food growing up (bc poor)#but i also struggle with self-control/impulse control because… obviously#so i binge a lot and then feel really bad afterwards (physically and mentally) but i struggle to tell myself no#so i go through periods where like one day i’ll eat absolutely nothing at all to punish myself & the next i’ll binge until i’m sick#but no psychiatrist has ever wanted to diagnose me with an eating disorder because… well… the psychiatrists in my area aren’t great…#and i’m fat…. so i don’t fit their idea of what someone with an eating disorder should look like#so i’ve never been able to get treatment for my disordered eating#so i’m excited about my consultation…#but i’m also nervous that i won’t be able to actually lose the weight#because most of my family has the same type of disordered eating#and they grew up poor so they don’t have the best idea of nutrition nor do they currently have the means to afford good food (still poor)#so regardless of what information i’m given#my family is likely going to continue to buy the same tempting unhealthy foods#and i just don’t trust myself :/#also i’m not sure if my insurance will cover my appointment if the clinic chooses to take me on as a patient#so i could literally just be told that yeah i’m overweight and i clearly need help but i can’t get help because insurance#which wouldn’t do anything for me except for make me feel 1000x worse about my current situation#but also i’m so tired of feeling/being this way#not necessarily being fat but being unhealthy and feeling like i don’t have control over my own impulses and actions…#like i don’t have the power to stop myself from binging#it’s just very frustrating and really taking a toll on me#sorry for the rant#but life is a lot for me right now#and i can’t talk to anyone in my family about this because they’ll think i’m a danger to myself#(aka going to off myself) & they’ll take me to the hospital & then i’ll have to go in inpatient again (i haven’t been inpatient since 14/15)#& i really just don’t want to deal with that because like… that’s not what’s happening here#tw mental instability
