Okay so the thing is. Compared to Leon or even compared to his time spent with Los Illuminados we don’t,,,, k n o w a whole lot about that portion of Luis’ life

Like OK if you’re speaking in logistics/canon compliancy then no alas it wouldn’t work at all JANSHSNDJXNX Laboratory Six (the Lab Luis worked in that made Nemesis) was set in Paris, France, and by the time the Raccoon City Outbreak had started, Luis had already fled Umbrella and presumably ended up in Valdelobos (sure there’s a CHANCE he might’ve floated around Europe for a while but?? He describes his time spent working on the Plagas as having been ‘years’ so I’m assuming he went straight to Valdelobos)

The timeline gets kinda wonky with Luis- he would’ve roughly been 22 when he fled umbrella, and it would’ve been anywhere between a couple months to a year before the RC Outbreak, and which meant he spent five or six years trapped by Los Illuminados give or take???? Which makes how he got a degree, went to college, got a job at Umbrella and spent enough time there to become one of their head scientists really funny to imagine when you remember he was only 21/22 when he fled HDBSHDNSJS like damn that man is a CHILD PRODIGY!!!! ((It also makes it DEVASTATING to imagine how he found out about Raccoon City one way or another but HEY I SAID NOTHING))

But if you’re talking in an AU or personality wise???? That’s a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY IM CHOMPING AT THE BIT FOR

Honestly I don’t think it’d be TOOOO different to their actual dynamic, just that they were both a lot younger and had a lot more maturing to do!!!! Again we don’t really know what kind of a person Luis was when he was younger other than that he was SUPER ambitious (which makes sense), probably a little more floaty/cocky (I don’t think he was lying about being a ladies man HXNSSJHD) overly curious and just generally really well-liked by his peers!! Like he considered them his family so I imagine he was probably just a more roughhouse version of the Luis we know him as now. We also don’t know how much of the Nemesis project Luis was aware of- given his upbringing I HIGHLY doubt Luis would go into umbrella knowing full well the scope of what they’re doing but I think it’s unrealistic to say he had malicious intent the entire time!!!

But adding onto that I think his guilt would be a LOT more apparent and repressed at the same time. Like when we see him in RE4R he’s already at a point where he’ll throw himself into the fire to fix his mistakes so can you IMAGINE what it must’ve been like when he was FRESH out of said mistakes????? Would he have tried to pretend they never happened??? Would it manifest as being destructive??? Who knows!!!!!! But I know for a fact Leon’s presence would DEFINITELY throw him for a loop HDBEHENDJD

Leon in RE2 is just PAINFULLY good at heart. Like we all know this you don’t need me to repeat it HXBSHSNS all he wants from the very start is to help anyone and everyone he can, and I think that would extend to Luis too. He’s obviously a lot more trusting too (like blah bla everyone get your jokes abt him believing that Ada was an FBI agent out of the way) so I don’t think he’d have AS strong of a grudge against Luis as he does in the remake. Sure I think he’d be WARY of him but if Luis was as honest and open as he is in re4r (even with a little prodding) which I think he definitely would be, ESPECIALLY cuz of, Y’know, waves hands, the debilitating guilt BXNSHNSJS Leon wouldn’t have a hard time trusting him in the end

What ID be SUPER INTERESTED IN is what would happen AFTER RC!!!! Would Leon try to protect Luis from the law???? Would Luis follow in Leon’s footsteps and be a government agent???? Would they both run away to Valdelobos and BOTH get stuck?????????

TLDR FOR THIS ACCIDENTALLY REALLY LONG POST AHWNWHWNDUDJSK I don’t think it’d be much different!!!!!!! They’d just have more maturing to do, which I think is weirdly beautiful!!!!!! Leon is still rather naive and optimistic and overly trusting and Luis is still wild and ambitious and overly curious about the world around him!!!!!! They’re good people at heart and I think their lives would’ve been a whole lot different if they’d just met at a different time and a different place

Chapter 2

William: "Ahahaha! You're the unluckiest person I've ever met. To think that in the end you were forced to say yes to teaming up with a person you're most wary of."

Kate: "Um..it's not like that...."

William: "It's fine, you don't need to deny it. It's not like I'm particularly offended or anything."

Right when Victor proposed the idea of teaming up with Master William, the man himself showed up. There was no way I could have said no.

I ended up accepting to work with Master William.

(....As the 'Fairy tale master' I have to win the trust of these people, so that I can go back to my normal life)

(If keep being vigilant and don't go off on tangents, I'll be fine)

Kate: "So...Master William."

William: "William."

Kate: "....William, what are your plans for today?"

(What if he's going to take me to another blood-soaked arena....)

At that moment, a bright voice flew in close by.

With a light giggle, Liam popped out of thin air.

Liam: "Yep. I guess the correct way of saying it is to 'become invisible' to the eyes of people at a certain distance. Fufu, is quite convenient, is it not?"

William: "You look happy. Are you having fun experimenting with Roger, again?"

Liam: "As expected of you, Will. You know everything."

Kate: "Experimenting?"

William: "Roger, himself is a cursed 'traitorous hunter', and is researching about the curse."

Liam: "He's an oddball who joined the Crown because he wanted samples other than himself."

Roger: "I do human experiments all the time. Liam here is my cooperative test subject."

Roger: "That's right. I'm also planning to do some comparative testing with the general public."

As we approached the entrance hall, I noticed what was not there last night piled high in a voracious pile in the center of the hall.

A frame wrapped in fine cloth, a coffin with a design of obvious historical value.

Necklaces with gemstones larger than a fist displaced on a torso mannequin....

Other beautiful things are lined up in a narrow space.

Alphonse: "Haa...El did it again."

Liam: "Good morning, Al. Did you just come home?"

Alphonse: "Yes. My friends....wouldn't let me go last night."

As Mr. Alphonse approached our direction, he had a languid atmosphere and I smelled the muddled sweet scents of multiple perfumes.

(It would be wise not to ask....what he had been doing until morning)

Alphonse: "Let's have these taken to El's room."

Alphonse: ".....At the end of the day, it's probably destined to be thrown away again in the room like a piece of junk."

Alphonse: "Anyways, goodnight everybody."

Mr. Alphonse, with a theatrical lament, left for the back of the castle.

Liam: "Master El is cursed with the curse of the Queen of Greed."

Liam: "He is looking for the 'most beautiful thing' in the world....that's why sometimes he can be like this."

Kate: "So all of that was Master Elbert's belongings?"

Liam: "Yep. I heard that the Queen from Snow White is based on this curse. Also, not to forget, Al's curse is of the 'Magic Mirror."

Jude: "Tsk...What the hell is this? I can't walk."

Mr. Jude appears with a swear word and stomps over the coffin with his foot.

(It's like he's punishing...)

Ellis: "Good morning, William, Kate, and Liam. We're off to work. See you later."

Behind him, Ellis jumped over the coffin, like it was nothing.

Liam: "Have a nice day~ .....Their curses are 'the 13th Wizard' and the Thorn."

Liam: "Do you know about the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale?"

Suddenly, Ellis, who was about to leave the castle, looked back at us as if he had just remembered something.

Ellis: "I see that the newspapers have already reported about last night's incident, Will. They say the Queen of Hearts is out."

William: "It's earlier than expected. Seems that there is an excellent reporter. Thank you, Ellis."

I nod my head as I watch his back as he leaves the castle.

Liam: "It's from Alice in Wonderland, published decades ago. 'The Queen of Hearts."

Liam: "That's why the newspapers write funny things like Will's tricks."

Kate: "I see...."

Liam: "Roger says that the Queen of Hearts itself may be based on the curse of the 'Self-righteous King."

Liam: "I don't really know if that's true."

I wrote down every piece of knowledge I received one by one in my notebook so as to not forget.

Kate: "Saying that 'the Queen of Hearts is out' means that William's assassination is famous?"

Liam: "Of course. Will is one of the founders of the Crown."

Liam: "It's is said that the Crown was created as a result of an incident that Will caused, right?"

William: "Yeah. You remember it so well. My cat is listening to me."

When asked, I reflexively think of the area in the front row where I can have a good view of the stage.

(I like watching it there the best. I will be able to see the expressions on the actors' faces when they come out on stage....)

Kate: "As long as I could see it, I would be happy with any seat."

William: "Hmmm?"

After climbing the stairs and walking to the reception area, William said his name and for some reason, the manager jumps right out.

Manager: "Master William, how may I help you?"

William: "I need two seats for tonight's show."

Manager: "Sure."

William: "As one of the supporters of this theater, I have some flexibility."

The manager and William proceeded to talk familiarly, despite my lack of understanding.

Manager: "Is it your usual seat?"

William: "No. Are there any seats in the front row?"

Kate: "Eh....!?"

When I started trembling with joy but also holding back from jumping with excitement, William's eyes softened gently as if he could see through me.

William: "Heh, if you are this happy, you should have told me you wanted to sit in the front from the very beginning."

Manager: "Thank you for your patience. We have your seats ready."

(Ready....? That means I can finally see it)

William: "Thank god. Let's go then."

(It was something that I'd had to work hard for months and also I have to be so lucky to get it so easily....)

Entering the theater, my buoyant mood was immediately blown away.

Even in the front world, William seems to be a celebrity, from the aristocrats in the royal box seats to the commoners on the second floor.

I couldn't help but feel the weight of my shoulders being reduced.

It's obvious, but I, or anyone else besides the Crown, have been involved with him and have liked or disliked him.

Realizing that....I felt for the first time that he was the same person living in the same world.

William: "You are finally smiling."

Kate: ".....Was I not smiling that much?"

William: "Yeah, and even now, you're laughing to your heart's content only half of the time."

Kate: "Eh...."

William: "Oh look, the curtain is about to open....the show is gonna start."

I was tilting my head at the meaning of his words, but the stage, which began immediately, took my attention away.

By the time it was over, I had forgotten all about it.

Kate: "I thought he was really stabbed with a knife in that scene! How could he act like that?"

On the way home after the play, my excitement of seeing the play so close up was too hard to shake off.

William: "Have you never really been stabbed before?"

Kate: "Eh....that's unexpected. Isn't it obvious?"

William: "Why not? Nowadays, anesthesia and suturing techniques are more advanced and he could have been stabbed by someone he knew for acting."

William: "And he had a habit of dragging his left leg a little."

William: "It's common for nerves to be compressed by an open wound during suture surgery, leaving the lower extremities paralyzed."

Kate: "Oh....really?"

William: '....What do you think?"

I can't see myself giving my life at the risk of possibly dying.

Thinking with a straight face, William burst out laughing.

I suddenly got embarrassed when I realized that I took his words too seriously.

Kate: "Seriously...please don't make fun of me."

I reflexively retorted and covered his mouth with my hand.

William: "....Kate."

But, William gently removed my hand that was covering his mouth.

William: "You have a habit of taking people's feelings into consideration, but you try to push your own feelings into the background."

William: "It doesn't seem like it's because I was the main killer."

William: " 'I'm afraid of working with you', 'I don't want to be a part of your human experiments', 'I want to go see the play', 'I want to sit in the front row."

William: " 'I don't want to be teased'....."

William: "They are all genuine feelings. Why hide them?"

The question was asked so curiously that a strange feeling welled up in my heart.

Kate: "I don't have any...particular reason as to why."

William: "You could have cursed me. Like calling me a murderer or selfish."

I was perplexed by that question.

William simply smiled and looked at me.

William: "You're welcome. I was originally planning to come to town anyways, so don't worry about it."

William: "Haha, Why? Is it your bedtime, already?"

William: "Don't worry, for the next month, your life will be far from modest."

William: "Oh, I know a place. It's safe and fun. You'll love it."

Big Ben is showing at 9pm. Just watching the play is enough, I'm full.

Besides, it doesn't feel right to go to a 'fun place' alone....that too with an assassin on a night like this.

But, today he was there for me. He saw what I wanted and gave it to me.

Was it a trap to get me to nod to this invitation, or was it his true kindness?

Once that was clear, I felt I could understand just a little bit more about who he was.

sorry for being late! Enjoy a really screwed up flashback. B127 had been strapped to the table for what seemed like days, leash wrapped around the hook, though she hadn’t made him wear the gag in a while, when Dr. Glassener had returned. She had recovered from the previous weeks marathon research session. Her hair was no longer piled into a messy ponytail, it was once again held in a slicked back bun. Her old, wrinkled scrubs had been replaced by new crisp ones, and she wore a freshly laundered white coat, her initials embroidered above the pocket. Most importantly, however, the dangerous glint had returned to her eyes oncemore. B127 knew this glint all too well, and it also was aware of what it meant. Dr. Glassener had an idea.

“Good morning, B127'' Dr. Glassener chirped as she opened one of the cabinets and started rifling through it. “I had the most wonderful idea over the weekend. It took me a moment to secure some of the more exotic materials that I would need, but I did!”

B127 watched as she organized everything on the tray. There were just four instruments on the table this time-a scalpel and three sort of spoon-looking things that he had never seen before, as well as a couple of antiseptic wipes. It was very dierent from the rst time it had been strapped to the table, when Dr. Glassener had used almost every tool she owned, and spent the better part of a morning poking, prodding, and examining it. An excited grin spread across the doctor's face as she took something out of the microwave-like device that she called an incubator. She set three Petri dishes down on the tray. “Here are my new friends!” She pointed at each dish in turn. “This is Enterococci, this is Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, and my favorite, Streptococcus pyogenes!” The doctor continued her lecture as she pulled on her gloves, “We’re going to be looking into wound infections, isn’t that cool?” She ripped open an alcohol wipe.

The pungent smell of alcohol filled its nostrils as Dr. Glassener cleaned its thighs, the wipe cold against its skin. It was made of something soft, the softest thing that it had felt in a long time. However, the sensation was gone too soon, and all that was left was the alcohol as it slowly evaporated, taking any of the warmth it had left with it. Once his thigh was clean, Dr. Glassener picked up the scalpel, her gloved fingers delicately perched on the handle. The doctor rarely warned before she cut, and B127 braced itself as the knife pressed into its skin.

Dr. Glassener made three cuts on B127’s leg. They weren’t even particularly deep-the knife stopped before its muscle, only slicing through what little fat that was left. Blood pooled in the wound, threatening to send scarlet drops rolling down its thigh. It certainly wasn’t pleasant, but compared to the other things that Dr. Glassener had done, this was minor. “Okay, cuts have been made! Now it’s time for you to meet our friends.”

Dr. Glassener lifted the lid off the first petri dish and plucked one of the spoons from the tray. The jelly made a swishing noise as the doctor wielded the spoon, scoping a sliver of the jelly. She pried one of the wounds on B127’s thigh open with two fingers then jammed the spoon in, depositing the jelly inside the wound. When that was done dropped the spoon in the trash can, then she repeated the process again two more times, her hands moving swiftly.

The cold jelly burned inside of B127 like an ice cube on bare skin. It was a sickly feeling, and it wanted to claw the little slices of jelly out of its wound. Dr. Glassener started to peel her gloves o. “You know the rules-no moving, not even a little bit-I don’t want to disturb the test sites.” She pressed her sweaty, latex-smelling hand to its face, stroking its cheek. “No crying or whimpering or puking, but you know that. You’re a good, pliant little pet.” She scratched behind his ear a little bit, then went o to her desk to complete some of the paperwork that she often complained about, keeping B127 in sight.

About an hour later, things started to take a turn for the worse. The warmth that Dr. Glassener’s praise had given it had gone, and it was replaced by pain. Fire poured from the cuts into his veins, spreading throughout his body. With them, they carried waves of nausea and misery.

Everything about it was scorching drops of sweat dripping down its face, neck, and back. Its stomach churned, threatening to send the half-decent meal that it had been fed back up. B127 pleaded with its body to stop, to calm down, but it was too late. The vomit came pouring out and B127 belched all over itself.

Dr. Glassener’s head snapped up at the noise, and the look on her face turned instantly displeased. “Useless rat!” She yelled as she angrily rose from her chair, grabbing a pair of gloves and throwing them on as quickly as she could, then running over to the table where B127 was strapped down. “Stop vomiting!”

Try as it might, it couldn’t stop. There wasn’t even any food left, it was just bile, and as much as B127 tried to swallow it down, it just wouldn’t. It watched in fear as Dr. Glassener fervently unblocked the strap that held its shoulders down to the table “I said stop!” Picking it up by the neck, she slammed its head into the table. “Stop vomiting, rat!” Its head hit the table again. “Fine!” She clamped her gloved hands over B127's mouth and nose, suocating it. “As long as you keep vomiting, you don’t get to breathe! You don’t get to unless I say you get to!”

Fear filled B127’s eyes as it finally gained enough control to swallow the rest of the vomit back down. Every time it tried to take a breath, it sucked in an impenetrable wall of latex. After what seemed like a small eternity, Dr. Glassener let go. It pulled as much air into its lungs as it could, seeking any oxygen it could get. The relief was dampened by the doctor’s hand slapping him across the face. “You’re a stupid, messy little thing. And you know what stupid messy little things have to do?” She shoved its face to the side, forcing it into the vomit. “It has to clean up its mess. C’mon rat, clean it up. Eat it up. It's yours, after all.” She watched as B127 helplessly tried to swallow the foul-smelling, even fouler tasting liquid.

“You deserve this, you worthless rat.”

Swan tells Hana and Reiko they need to be strong, as they, Sakura and Mikoto move through the city.

The incident started with a strange item being studied by GGG, the decision is made to pass the O-Part to Takanohashi, a renowned scientist, who appreciates Leo's confidence in him, and laughs with Swan. On the flight back, Gai suddenly suffered a strange ailment, the same started affecting the male staff aboard the Orbit Base, and the Mobile Squad are too busy being overhauled to dispatch, and the Mic Brothers are in America. In school, Sunou, Ushi and Mamoru are similarly affected. Swan and Mikoto found Sakura, who reported the same happened at the Space Development Corporation. Volfogg dedicated himself to protectsion. It is eventually determined some wave is affecting only those with XY Chromosomes, coming from Takanohashi's laboratory. Hana and Reiko find Ayame and then AI, and they meet up with the others, and together they all break into the lab.

Inside things are weird, Ayame has an Airsoft rifle for protection, as the security system separates people by shutters.

Mikoto is with Swan, who has to encourage her to keep going to save Gai.

Hana is with Reiko, who inadvertently scares her, she finds courage before they find security Mecha and run. When they are trapped, Hana suggests Reiko use her family wealth to help them out, leading her to admit they lost their money years ago, and her father is dead, Reiko and her mother share a modest apartment and Ushi is the only one to know until now. The Mecha burst in, Reiko attacks and tells Hana run.

Ayame, Ai and Sakura are together. Ayame uses a scope to scan the area, and tells them that her love of machines is something she developed due to a senpai she has feelings for's own love for them. Sakura admits she has someone she loves. When the Mecha attack Ayame intends to hold them off, but Sakura joins her, as the sole inheritor of Taiga's Head Driver technique.

Mikoto and Swan find an enervated woman, who tells them Takanohashi did something, creating a field, before she collapses. They hear a shambling voice, and find a mutated creature, Swan swears to hold it off so Mikoto can keep moving.

Hana, Ai and Mikoto meet up, Mikoto is struggling, but will keep going, the others pushed to join. They find Takanohashi, now possessed by an alien entity, which essentially wanted to have the run of the planet's women. Naturally they, nor the others as they catch up, are willing to accept this, asserting they will love who they choose, not what this guy makes them do. He uses hypnotism, but Ai snaps out of it and scolds the hell out of him, forcing him to leave. After it leaves, Takanohashi is friendly, of perhaps a little over-friendly.

Everyone has private moments with their loved ones. J and Arma have a moment, after Ikumi thinks he hears his mother. Mic reunites with Mamoru and Hana.

The sound of metal against metal, he watched from nearby, arms crossed over his chest. He watched the barely adult recruit easily dispatch of the older agent, the agent's back hitting the mat hard. Messy untied brown hair framed his face as he pointed the greatsword at the agent, he hadn't even broken a sweat, his chest barely rose any further than normal.

He was getting stronger.

"He's suffered immense trauma." The doctor shook her head, arms crossed over her chest as she spoke in hushed tones. Kevin looked over her shoulder at the teenager sitting on the examination table in the middle of the room. "I'm just not sure he's worth our efforts right now." She admitted, looking over her shoulder at the battered boy.

"Can he recover?"

"Well yes, but.."

"But?"

The doctor uncrossed her arms with a sigh, gesturing for the sire to follow her to the boy. He tensed when she approached him, pulling his knees tighter to his chest. He was still in Kevin's cloak, having refused to give it back yet. "Hi, Honoré." He shied away from her when she spoke. Kevin frowned, he'd been in the room for the most part, the examination hadn't been particularly invasive. "I need to shine the light over your eyes again, okay? For the sire." 

"It's okay, Honoré."

Honoré looked at Kevin when he spoke, bright eyes wide. Fearful. The man smiled to try and reassure him. "O…Okay." He watched the doctor pull the pen light from her lab coat pocket again. He blinked rapidly as she turned it on, preparing himself. The doctor gestured for Kevin to watch as she gently gripped Honoré's jaw with her free hand. She then flashed the light over his brown-green eyes.

Lines of pink and sickly hues of purple became visible in the browns of his eyes as the light flashed over them. And just as they became visible with the bright light, they faded when the light faded. "Honkai radiation..?" Kevin questioned, turning his head to look at her. The doctor clicked her pen off, releasing the boy's chin with a nod of her head. "He has no other symptoms though?" Another nod.

"Look at this." She pocketed her pen and stepped away from the examination table to her nearby desk. She quickly placed a slide into the microscope, adjusting the settings before allowing him to look through the scope. "Proteins in his body are consuming the illness at a faster rate than it can infect him. It must cause great pain though.." She sounded mystified by the phenomenon. Kevin pulled his head up from the microscope, looking at Honoré.

"An enhanced healing ability?" 

"I assume so. But I don't see why he would have been created li-"

"Created?"

He watched Honoré turn his head fully away, tangled hair falling in his face, coat tugged around his small frail body. "He's a clone. His genetic makeup is, quite frankly, a mess. I'm surprised it worked." The doctor also looked at him, shrugging her shoulders. "Honoré, will you tell the sire what you told me?" She questioned but the boy curled further in on himself.

"It's un-un..uni…" He stammered over his words, inhaling soft and exhaling shakily. "Unimportant.." He finally managed after several seconds of quiet breathing. She opened her mouth to say something but Kevin lifted his hand, silencing her. The man approached the examination table once more, Honoré lifting his head when Kevin stopped beside him.

Kevin held his hand out, like he had before. The boy's own shaky hand immediately reached for it. The Serpent helped the boy off the table, his form frail as he leaned against the man. "We can conduct more tests once he's had time to heal." Kevin's stare towards the doctor kept her quiet. She didn't see the potential, but Kevin couldn't bring it within himself to abandon the boy. He didn't deserve such treatment, again. "I've had the room beside mine made up for you. I'll show you." 

"Do I get to keep the co…" 

"You can keep my coat if it brings you comfort, yes." Kevin could sense his relief when he didn't need to repeat himself in desperate attempts. Honoré's weight against him grew heavier as the boy all but collapsed against him. Kevin inhaled sharply when he picked the unconscious boy up instead, one arm hooked under his knees, the other supporting his back.

The doctor stepped forward, looking over the boy as he lay unconscious in Kevin's arms. "He's exhausted." She concluded after a few moments. "Like I said.. immense trauma." She stepped away, her cold stare growing sympathetic as she looked at him. "I don't think he's been safe to sleep in a long time." Kevin looked down at the boy in his arms, the bruises and cuts were a fraction of a story. "In the meantime, I'll run more tests."

"Thank you, doctor. I'll lay him down."

Honoré flipped the greatsword, resting the blunt side against his shoulder with one hand while he held out his other hand. The older teenager helped the agent to her feet, the older woman shaking her head. "They weren't kidding when they said you're a quick study, Peregrine!" She praised, shaking his hand and then releasing him to retrieve her own weapon from the ground.

A lot had changed in four years, Kevin usually wouldn't say that, such a fraction compared to his lifespan. But the evidence was presented before him. The boy he'd rescued from the streets now a young man capable of wiping most of World Serpent's forces should he ever choose. Though not a threat Kevin could ever consider, the young man's loyalty unwavering.

"Honoré."

Kevin called and like a good student, Honoré's attention snapped to him. "Excuse me, Vaquita." He bowed his head at her, turning and leaving her side to return to Kevin's instead. Kevin held out his hand and Honoré handed him the greatsword. "Is so..so..som.." he tilted his head as he took a moment. "Something wrong, sir? I know my timing was a little slow today but-"

"Let's get dinner." Kevin interrupted, adjusting his grip on his greatsword. He'd have to return the weapon to his armoury first. Honoré blinked once, twice, confused. But he slowly nodded. "Go shower. I'll meet you afterwards." That would be more than enough time. Honoré nodded quickly, a small smile on his pale features.

"Yes, sir!"

He was indeed different..

Kevin adjusted his grip on the boy, pulling the blankets back with one hand before gently setting him on the plush bed. The Serpent then carefully pulled the blankets over the boy's body. He tucked him in, as he'd seen Su do with Adam. On the large bed he looked even smaller, tiny frame curling into a small ball. Kevin reached down, gently brushing his hair from his face. He'd need a shower and a haircut..

"Stay..?" 

His broken voice hurt the man's heart. Kevin looked around the scarcely furnished room, leaving Honoré's side to fetch the chair from the desk. He pulled it up and sat down beside the bed, his arm quickly taken by the boy to be held. "Am I not too cold?" Kevin inquired, blue eyes watching the boy's face, barely illuminated by the light outside the window. 

"Resistant. Just.. until I fall back asleep.." 

Kevin tilted his head some, watching the boy turn his face into his pillow, exhaling deeply. "I will watch over you now, I promise." He allowed the boy to cling to his arm, even if the half lean proved uncomfortable to the sire. His eyes closed and Kevin got to really inspect his face, every freckle, every divot and faded scar, the bruises and the cuts. 

"Rest now, Honoré."

CREEL’S CLOCKS. [#4]

Summary:  Eddie and Gareth introduce 001 to music. Warnings:  Mentions of child experimentation/abuse. Author’s Note:  Sorry this instalment took almost a month, there’s been a lot going on in my family as of late.  Also, I don’t subscribe to the Gareth ‘Emerson’ rhetoric–

Gareth lives in a proper house.

001 stands close to Eddie’s side, staring up at the house as if he expects it to sprout a mouth and eat him.  Its red bricks and clean windows intimidate the boy more than he cares to admit, it’s normalcy painfully daunting.  He’s heard the phrase, ‘Eyes are the windows to the soul’, but he thinks otherwise;  a person’s home–  being able to peer in through their unsuspecting living room window and see a person in their most vulnerable state–  is the truest indication of who they are inside.

Instinctively, he shuffles closer to their ringleader as Gareth enters the house, the clean white door left slightly ajar as he scopes out who’s home.  When he returns, beckoning them inside insistently, he knows to make a mad dash for wherever Eddie guides him.

As they pass the kitchen, Gareth’s mother calls out in greeting, though her back remains to them as she prepares food.  001 knows not to join in on the tiny chorus of hey!’’s.  This has been his routine for the past three weeks, dodging parents and siblings and grandparents galore.  The less people that know about him, the better.

Eyes curiously travel along the walls each time he’s brought into a new house.  After spending so long in a place that had a singular defining trait–  white–  he’s always left slightly stunned by the personality people pour into their decor.  Some are mushy and sentimental, while others favour aesthetics, and sometimes he can learn all he needs to about a person based on the art they invite into their personal space.  Indeed, a person’s home is the true window to the soul  —  and Gareth’s soul is decidedly homely.  One photograph in particular captures 001’s attention;  a family photo that depicts the entire Keefer creed.  If his assumptions are correct, Gareth isn’t the only child in this house.

Briefly, he considers what his own family portrait would look like, but he can only envision his siblings from the lab, lined up in a miserable row, all looking similarly despondent.  He quickly decides that he’s glad Papa never insisted on photographs being taken.

They make a sharp left and veer down a steep, concrete stairway.  He’s only been in a basement–  a boiler room, to be more specific–  once, and it ended in a punishment so severe that he still remembers the details.  The way Papa had scolded him, before carrying him to the testing room like he was handling a newborn;  the way he himself had nestled his face into his shoulder and wound his arms around his neck despite knowing he was about to be beaten within an inch of his life.   A starved child, hungry only for love, clinging to his benefactor in the blind hope that he’d stop making mistakes that wound him in his bad books.

And all because he’d wanted to see a spider.

001 is tense as they reach the bottom  —  and then Gareth tugs a cord at the bottom of the stairs, bathing the room in warm orange light.

Immediately, the basement defies his expectations.  The hard concrete has been replaced with glossy wooden planks, shoes squeaking slightly when he moves too quickly, and what would have been a garish overhead light has been muted by a large red lampshade.  Blue eyes trace the heavily padded couch, pillows and blankets scattered haphazardly across the L-shaped cushions.  A table littered with videos and comic books sits in front of it, and it naturally prompts him to look at the cabinet poised directly opposite the sofa.  Most of its contents are hidden by closed wooden panels, though a TV sits on top of it, and that’s clearly the centrepiece.

This contrast of wealth and boyish disorder is confusing to say the least.  001 isn’t quite sure what to make of this room  —  whether he should be nervous to sit down and sully the perfect leather of the couch, or whether he should prop his feet up on the messy table as he reclines on it.

His gaze drifts to a strange object in the corner of the room.  He gravitates towards it like a moth to a flame.

“What…  is this?”

“This is my drumset.”  Gareth pridefully approaches the instrument, giving one of the cymbals a pat in very much the same way that a person might pet their dog.  “We make music together.  I’m the drummer.  I’m pretty good.”

001 reaches out to touch one of the drums, only to have his hand slapped away.

“Don’t touch it,”  Gareth barks, scowling.  Out of all the boys, he’s the one who’s thawed the least.  He doesn’t yet trust the other, and he makes sure to remind him of said fact whenever it’s appropriate.

001 acquiesces without complaint, his hand falling back to his side.  He doesn’t really know what it’s like to own something–  nevermind something he loves–  but he imagines he’d be as protective over it as Gareth is over his drums.  He doesn’t hold it against him one bit.

“What does it do?”

Gareth squints.  “I already told you.  It makes music.”

“Music…?”

“Yeah.”  His arms fold over his chest, a scornful eyebrow raise directed at the strange boy.  “Are you for real right now?”

“Hey, c’mon man.”  Eddie joins their circle, shooting Gareth a disapproving look.  Not quite a glare, but not far off.  “You gotta have more patience.  He doesn’t know.”

Gareth glances away, as if genuinely ashamed.  He isn’t a bad person;  he doesn’t revel in being mean or unfair, he just has a shorter fuse than most and doesn’t always know how to put his good nature into practice.  He looks at 001 before bowing his head in silent acknowledgement.

“Yeah.  Each of the drums makes a different sound.  You hit them with sticks and they make noise.”

If nothing else, hitting things with sticks sounds like a fun pastime.  The more 001 thinks about it, the more he realises that his choice in hobby makes perfect sense  —  that somebody of Gareth’s temperament would be drawn to something that relieves him of his frustrations.  It’s the first time that he’s seen aggression be poured into something other than another person.  It earns the boy a strange sort of respect.

“A drum beat is the pulse of any good song,”  Eddie proclaims, grinning wide as he slings an arm around Gareth’s shoulders.  “Real important.  Almost as important as teaching you what good music is.”

001 tilts his head like a confused puppy.  “Good music?”

The notion makes little sense to him.  He thought that art was subjective, and ultimately meaningless.  That’s what Papa always used to say about his drawings.

So what if he said that?  You’ve already come to the conclusion that he tells lies.  That was probably one of them.

He watches as Eddie bends low, pulling the doors of the cabinet open to reveal rows upon rows of cassette tapes.  They sit in snug, uniform lines, their titles displayed proudly on their spines.  In the centre of the middle shelf, a stereo stands tall, a slot for tapes visible on the front.

“What do you think, Garebear?  The Ramones?”

“Led Zeppelin?”

“Black Sabbath?”

The boys spare each other a sideways glance before descending into a fit of snickers.  The image of a boy as reserved and quiet as 001 being exposed to the scathing screams of Ozzy Osbourne is its own brand of hilarious.  One day, they’ll have to try it, just to see how he reacts, but for now they take mercy on him.

Eventually, they settle on Pink Floyd.

“I’m gonna be honest, I like it harder,”  Eddie says as he slots the tape into place, handing his friend the case.  His eyes flit delicately along the title, as if trying to decipher another language, while Eddie fiddles with the volume dial on the stereo.  As he’s grown older, he’s shifted further and further from classic rock, veering into heavy metal territory, but he doesn’t want to frighten 001.  It’s a genre that he should be eased into  —  especially as somebody who’s never really listened to music before.  “But this is okay too.”

001’s head snaps in the stereo’s direction when an unfamiliar voice and a smooth baseline emerge from the speakers.  Like a deer in the headlights, he stares at the device as if he’s deathly afraid of it.

“It’s okay,”  Eddie says with a laugh, clapping a hand on his shoulder and guiding him to sit with him on the sofa.  001 perches uncomfortably on its edge, as if scared to take up space, soaking in the new sensations like a sponge.  “Just relax.  That’s what music is.  A catharsis.”

Gareth takes a seat on the stool behind his drum kit, head bobbing to the beat.

001 has never had much time to simply exist.  Everything he’d done in the lab, he’d done for a greater purpose.  Fun was always an afterthought, and it was made abundantly clear by both Papa and the orderlies that oversaw their activities during free time that that was nothing more than necessary play;  an olive branch in the form of a choice between a chess board and a spinning top.

Eyes are drawn to the art on the cassette, eyes glazing over as he looks at the rainbow.  He hates these damn things.  All he can think about is that stupid room, with its stupid rules and its stupid toys.  As if a colouring book and a smile could make up for the fact that he’d been forced to fight a sibling that was five years his junior just that afternoon.

001 won’t pretend to be a saint.  He was mean to those kids, but he realises now that he behaved that way because Papa encouraged it.  Everything was a test, and those who failed, even if their efforts were valiant, received ire.  Disappointment so cool that it burned.  001 had done his best to make the scientist proud–  had burned himself out several times, spent nights hunched over the toilet bowl in his room’s tiny bathroom nook after pushing himself to his physical limit, all for a modicum of affection.  All he’d received was a list of mounting expectations, and an aching need to be loved.

He jumps slightly when Eddie rests a hand on his shoulder again.

“Hey.  Be careful with that.  You’re gonna break it.”

His gaze flits to the cassette case he’s holding.  Its plastic is growing pale in the centre, right where his thumb is digging in.  Any more pressure and it threatens to splinter completely.

“Sorry.”

Eddie’s expression is a little more grave than before, eyebrows furrowed.

“Where’d you go?”

001’s mouth twitches with slight confusion.  “Nowhere.”

“I mean in your mind,”  Eddie presses, the music a low whir in the background.  “What were you thinking about?”

001 looks away.  “The bad place.”

He detests how the outside world makes him feel.  It wasn’t supposed to be like this.  He was supposed to break out and find his family near instantly.  He was supposed to be back home by now, neatly slotted into the place he belonged and living a normal, safe life.  Instead, he spends his days confused and afraid, and feeling very much as if there isn’t room for him.  Eddie, Gareth and Jeff all seem to be trying so hard to make space for him in their homes, but he can’t imagine it’s much fun to spend time with somebody who’s so incredibly stunted.  Having to explain every little thing must get annoying, to the point where Gareth’s scorn is perhaps the most fair reaction he’s been met with.

I feel like a waste.  I just want to be allowed to die.

It isn’t the first time he’s had such a terrible thought.  In fact, the grave has occupied his brain ever since Papa introduced him to war.  He hopes, for his own terribly selfish sake, that his theory about there being nothing after death is correct.  The idea of being forced to endure a whole other lifetime is more torturous than any shock therapy or beating he’s shouldered thus far.

Eddie squeezes his shoulder gently, offering him a warm smile.

“Well, don’t think about that any more.  You’re not going back there.”

Before 001 can reply, Gareth hitting his drums in time with the music earns his attention.  There’s a broad smile on his face, wooden sticks accentuating the current track’s droning rhythm.

“Oh, big deal!”  Eddie teases, picking up one of the comic books on the table and swatting 001’s knee with it.  “Tell him he’s lame, One.”

What is ‘lame’?

Before they can linger on it too long, Eddie stands up, bounding over to the stereo and plucking the tape from it.

“Keep up with THIS!”

And just like that, a wailing guitar consumes the basement, volume cranked up LOUD!  001 jumps in his seat, back pressed tight against the couch as the noise smothers him, and immediately Gareth rises to the challenge.  What was a simple four-by-four beat becomes quick and well-flourished, the boy smirking wolfishly as he races to keep up with the pounding rhythm.

001 isn’t told what the song is  —  and while he can’t say that he likes it, the way that it makes him feel is something he’s never experienced before.  What Eddie said, about music providing catharsis…  he’s feeling it now, coursing through him like a current.  He feels very much about the heavy guitar the way that he does about charcoal:  it’s comforting to have something that mirrors the mess in his head.  Charcoal is bitty and smears oh-so-easily, and his fingers wind up looking like part of the art he’s made.  Similarly, the guitar buries its way into his brain and does nothing to untangle his jumbled thoughts.  Instead, it ignites them, technicolour electricity pulsing through the noise in a way that makes him feel understood.  Represented.  Less alone.

Eddie lets out an excited wail, mimicking playing a guitar at a ridiculously high speed, both boys consumed by a deep, frenetic appreciation for the art.  001 stares in wide-eyed wonder.  He’s never seen a person succumb to a rhythm before;  it’s oddly primal.

“C’mon, One!  Join in!”

The boy blinks owlishly, clearly not understanding the assignment.  “What…  do I do?”

“You just feel it!”

001 attempts to focus through the ruckus, pinpoint how the track makes him feel.  If he tries hard, he can sense something.  It starts in his feet, manifesting itself in the form of an awkward side-to-side shuffle, and slowly works its way up from there.

“I feel…  like moving.”

“Then it’s working!”  Eddie’s moves, comparatively, are severely unhinged.  His arms are flailing.  His tongue is stuck out.  His shoulder length hair is flying everywhere.  And Gareth is playing with such ferocity that his poofy head of hair is coming out of place.

The singer’s vocals shift from quiet growls to noisy yells, and immediately 001 stops shuffling.  After a moment of stunned silence, the boy bursts out laughing.  It's an unsure sound–  broken up into several pitched syllables, as if he's trying desperately not to let it out–  but it's laughter nonetheless, and it's enough to have both boys stop what they're doing.  001 hunches over, hugging his stomach as a tidal wave of mirth washes over him.  For just a moment, despite the strain in the action, he comes across as an average boy.

"What gives?"  Gareth demands with a grin, breath coming out in shallow pants.

"Why is he doing that?"  001 asks with a breathless smile, little white teeth displayed in a rare moment of unguarded glee.

"He's feeling it!"

"Feeling…  the drums?"

"Feeling it all, man."  Eddie reaches out to turn the volume down a little.  "Never seen screamo make someone laugh before though."

001 can't entirely explain why it had been funny to him.  He just knows that the unexpected nature of it had startled, then tickled him.  The most he's heard is a quiet piano trill and a measured whine of the violin.

"It surprised me,"  he admits, his face back to flat.  "I didn't expect him to shout."

Papa never liked noise, and he especially didn't like chaos.  He was the equivalent of a judge, if the judge in question was allowed to wield his mallet against the people that disrupted the order of  the courtroom.

Blue eyes flit back to the stereo, then to Gareth's drum set.

"I like music.  I think."  He doesn’t understand it yet, but that's neither here nor there.  "Can I… hit the drum?"

Eddie and Gareth share a look before Gareth hands over one of his sticks.

"Sure, man.  Get it out."

001 doesn't know if he's ever going to 'get it out', but at least he's slowly adjusting.  Assimilating.  Learning.  He strikes one of the drums gently, its weak echo playing on loop in his head.

Gareth smirks. "Harder than that."

001 glances at him, then looks back at the drum he'd chosen, beating it harder this time. The mess inside his head folds outwards, relief nestling into every wounded thought he's ever had.  Catharsis.

Maybe hitting things with sticks should be his thing too.

In a new study, led by the Universities of Birmingham, in the UK, and Bergen, in Norway, researchers have shown that atmospheric CO2 pumped into a mature forest at levels predicted to be the norm by 2050 will cause trees to produce more and longer roots.

The research, published in Science of the Total Environment, was carried out in the Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) facility, operated by the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR). It complements earlier research which shows the same trees will increase their rate of photosynthesis by up to a third under elevated CO2 conditions.

BIFoR FACE is a ‘sci-fi’ forest, representing one third of the world’s largest experiment investigating the effect of global change on nature. It forms a giant ‘ecosystem-o-scope’ with sister facilities near Sydney, in Australia, and Manaus, in the Amazon. In each of these facilities, extra CO2 is introduced, bringing the air to what is predicted to be the norm globally by 2050. To maintain the naturalness of the forest, the CO2-rich air is added using an ‘invisible curtain’ approach without roof or walls.

In the study, a research team gathered thousands of images of tiny tree roots, sometimes less than a millimetre wide, assembled over two years in the BIFoR FACE forest. These images were used to build a mathematical picture of the birth, growth, and death, of roots in an oak forest. Some images were taken of the roots in place, using a high-res camera sent under the forest floor in a set of long Perspex tubes. Other images were from roots painstakingly teased out of cores of soil extracted from the experiment.

Professor Iain Johnston, who led the study from Birmingham and then Bergen, explained, “It’s obviously hard to view these processes going on beneath the ground. But a combination of innovative engineering and careful field and lab work from our team have helped us shed new light on this behaviour — and on how confident we can be in our findings.”

Mathematical modelling and data analysis of the images, carried out at BIFoR and at the University of Bergen, concluded that more and longer roots appear beneath the trees growing in the high carbon dioxide atmosphere.

Representing the closely-knit team of four women scientists who carried out the fieldwork and mathematical analysis, Birmingham researcher Clare Ziegler said, “This work represents a great deal of collaboration, from student volunteers to the BIFoR leadership team. The researchers echoed this collaborative spirit, using our individual strengths in environmental science, biosciences, and mathematical modelling to gain an understanding that was greater than the sum of its parts, and would not have been possible with a single-disciplinary approach.”

The results support other evidence that trees do, and may continue to, provide limited protection against fossil-fuel derived increases in carbon dioxide and, hence, climate change, by absorbing and storing the carbon. Although this is by no means enough protection to significantly offset our emissions.

Colleague and researcher Angeliki Kourmouli said, “We usually take soil for granted, but it forms a crucial part of many ecosystems and plays a significant role in carbon storage. Understanding what goes on below ground when the forest experiences not only increased CO2, but also the additional stresses of climate change such as extreme weather, gives us really important insights into what we can expect in the future.”

Professor Rob MacKenzie, founding Director of BIFoR, added: “Now we have hard evidence that the extra carbon is being used, in part, to help the trees explore the nutrient-rich world beneath them. I’m tempted to say that the roots live long and prosper under the future atmosphere, but it will take more years of careful observation to be sure that is indeed the case.”
