Chrisjen Avasarala, heroine in a duster.
In the previous post about Chrisjen's clothes, I promised to talk more about this duster. It feels like it was a well-thought-out choice. The whole outfit was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why a duster? It was a coat primarily worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from dust. That slit in the back is what's left from it - it was useful while horse riding. Later, it was worn by people driving cars or riding motorbikes. Then it entered the world of fashion like everything else.
When it comes to fiction, a duster coat initially was just a standard cowboy costume. Makes sense with all horse riding they do. Later, it became a statement. Heroes and antiheroes started wearing them, the characters who had something important to do, who were on a mission, who drove the story forward.
We see protagonists wearing dusters in Doctor Who, Firefly, Blade Runner, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to Chrisjen. There was no practical reason for her to wear a coat like that to the office in season 5. It's not like she was planning to travel anywhere (I'm not opposed to the idea of her riding something. Bring it on). Chrisjen's scenes in this blue duster were a turning point for her - she lost everything, saved Earth, and started becoming the fearless and compassionate leader we see in later episodes. Let's not forget that the whole outfit is blue - an Earther on a mission. Her leather duster is finished with embossed details. Fancy!
Underneath, she's wearing leather pants and a gold on blue swirl leaf patterned waistcoat. This is also the beginning of her g̶a̶y̶ dandy phase I mentioned in the previous post. She's even wearing a chain. Accessories like this started as pocket watch chains. They are sometimes called Albert chains because Prince Albert loved them and made them popular.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her jewellery tells another story. She's wearing a set from Extasia - cameo and intaglio pressed glass necklace with bronze chain, Goddess Aurora earrings and acorn and oak leaf ring.
We could talk about symbolism here, but I'll spare you this essay. Just think about Roman Empire, strength, power, justice, and endurance.
Tumblr media
This outfit has its counterpart in season 6. I'm planning to compare them because I have no chill.

So I have an idea for a story but probably not going to write it myself.
Story idea 15:
So rangers normally don’t wear jewellery accept for the oak leaf necklace. So what happens when Halts find out Will got his ear pierced? Who did it? Was it Gilan? Or someone else? When did it happen? Does he keep it?
I would love it if someone could finish/write this story. You can do with it what you want. But let me know if you need inspiration or help. Of course let me know when you finished it, I would love to read it.

Autumn duet. Amulet pendant. Carved from mammoth Tusk and Baltic amber. Acorns and oak leaves form one of the magic signs-circles that astrologers believe can bestow, for example, protection or natural abundance. The fruit of this mighty oak is a symbol of potential opportunities. In Germano-Norse and Celtic myths, acorns were associated with life, fertility, and immortality. Druids would swallow acorns, recognizing their prophetic properties. Acorns were the sacred fruit of Thor, since his Tree of Life is an oak. #woodcarving #handmade #jewelry #moda #artdeco #NGSMasters #jewellery #Acorn #oak #leaf #fashion #mammoth #ivory #tusk #silver #romantic #Datedecuerno #luxury #artedecuernos #artnouve #amber #magic #charm #joaillerie #jewelrydesigner #Druids #Celtic #Yekaterinburg #pendant #exclusive (at NGS Masters) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBIvi-3pbA_/?igshid=md6nwikbnhgg

Taking It Seriously
Summary: Not a lot of people took Blue seriously, but he always means what he says.
Rating: K+ - Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.
Words: 3100
Notes: I really like Conflictingshipping. Yes, I know you know.
Tumblr media
Not a lot of people took Blue seriously. Not as a human being, not even as a damn trainer.
His father always treated everything like it must have been some massive joke that highlighted how ungrateful and disrespectful his son was. His grandfather overlooked him, in favour of the town’s other children and his research. His friends dismissed most of what he said as delusions of grandeur. Even Daisy, sweet Daisy, rarely spent enough time with him to actually gauge what he was doing. After his pathetically short reign as Champion, it got even worse, as he became a nation-wide joke.
The funny thing is that, while not a lot of people took Blue Oak seriously, whenever he said something, he meant it. He is intrepid and dog-headedly stubborn, and he stops at nothing to get what he wants.
Leaf knew that. It is not exactly a concept that she could fully understand as a kid, but definitely one that she would eventually recognize easily as an adult.
*_*_*_*_*
She had known Blue since they were kids, since even before his mom died. Along with Red, they were the three children their age in Pallet Town, the only three pupils on their schoolhouse next to Professor Oak’s laboratory, and were tight even later, when they began attending middle school along with the kids ferried over from Cinnabar Island.
Habit bred companionship between the two, stronger than it did between the pair and Red, who always seemed to be doing his own thing by the beach. It was fortunate for them that it did, because, even as a kid, Blue was bossy and disagreeable, a habit he never managed to grow out of.
At any given opportunity, the boy would be pushing her on the swing on his backyard, only to knock her off in the next instance because his arms were too tired. Not the kind of kid who made friends easily. Those would come later when people their age discovered that they cared about money, reputation and looks more than personality.
For a certain moment in time, though, Blue had Leaf as a companion, and her alone. Unfortunately for him, a boy through and through, Leaf nurtured a childish obsession with a certain thing, and he did not care too much about it.
Weddings.
When a second cousin or something of hers got married in Viridian City, it had thrown the entire village in a state of celebration. Since it was such a tiny dot on the map, those events were rare and eagerly awaited, as it signalled the survival of their town another generation down the road.
Since Leaf was the only girl around, she was given the opportunity to be a flower girl in the ceremony, a job she took very seriously for a six-year-old.
The whole thing felt like some magical event for her, with big dresses and jewellery and she were a little more enamoured by it than anything else in her short life. For weeks and weeks following the event, it was all she wanted to play, much to the chagrin of her only two playmates.
“We can play trainers after we get married!” The little girl reasoned, standing on the swing in the Oak backyard, hands gripping the chains as her friend pushed her.
There was a 50/50 chance she would get hurt, like the time two years ago that he told her to try climbing up the fence and she broke her arm, but she placated him because of pure habit at this point and because his mom had died and his dad was already getting married again.
“I hate playing wedding, you know it.” The auburn-haired boy grumbled.
“Fine, we can skip wedding. We can just be married.” She bargained, gripping the chain tighter when he shook the swing. “Stop it, Blue!”
“Then Pokémon trainer?”
“Yes!”
“Fine, we’ll get married.” He huffed. “Marrying is stupid.”
“No, it isn’t!” Leaf defended. “My mama said that when you love someone much, you get married, and I want to love someone that much.”
The understanding was simple because they were six and had lived a relatively sheltered life, even with the death of Blue’s mother.
“I like you and we aren’t married.” The youngest Oak argued.
“We will be if we play wedding!” She hopped off the swing in a tumble, laying on the grass.
Blue stayed where he was, contemplating more than his six-year-old self could comprehend. “I’m going to marry she for real one day. Then we don’t have to play wedding anymore.”
At the time, the only thing on her mind was Blue and playing together and she barely registered the words. She definitely did not take him seriously.
*_*_*_*_*
The years that followed their respective tenth birthdays strained significantly their relationship.
It was expected. Boys and girls eventually segregated away from each other at a given point in time, while they gravitated towards certain interests and goals that would not align anymore. Blue became obsessed about destroying the competition, that is, Red, in any worthwhile endeavour they could pursue, and that did not include Leaf most of the time.
There is also the fact that Blue’s temperament became more and more impetuous the closer he edged towards puberty. On the last year of theirs together at school, he was sent home no less than five times, due to fights with fellow students and even teachers.
While the three of them had passed their licence exams and were allowed to have Pokémon, only Blue and Red would depart to challenge the League, and Leaf would stay behind, as she would begin attending school in Viridian City.
She loved Pokémon and would be more than happy raising them, but the mock battles at school showed her that she was the weakest strategist of their class, and so her time would be better spent in other endeavours, lest she becomes one of those Pewter drop-outs that cannot even manage to win a single badge.
Nevertheless, she built a respectable six-Pokémon team, evolved her Squirtle all the way to a Blastoise and managed to travel around their region, one city at a time, on short excursions sponsored by her studies program, all the while never needing to sleep on the wild nor have beaten the living crap out of by a horde of Pidgey. Overall, she is very satisfied with the path she chose.
Their journey year came and went. Blue returned, but not Red. After a brief sojourn at his mother’s house, the mysterious champion of Kanto disappeared and Leaf never saw him again. Their friend in common seemed to know where he was, but refused to divulge the information.
Yet, even if they were neighbours again, and there was no Red anymore to play the rival, Blue and Leaf hardly rekindled the same kind of relationship they once had. The boy soon enrolled on a training regime to succeed as Viridian City gym leader, and it left little time for comradery with some townie down the road.
It was her own stubbornness that kept her coming back to him, relentless in her efforts to keep her best friend as just that. He resisted, in an increasing fashion as the two of them got older and he got into different circles of friendship, more prestigious ones, but she kept the line of communications open and there were plenty of nights that he showed up at her bedroom window needing to be talked off that ledge.
Time went on and by the time they were both nineteen, they were ready to move on from Pallet Town. In the Fall, Blue’s father suddenly announced that the playset in the backyard would be removed from the Oak property, and so the pair of its most devoted users decided to say their goodbyes.
“I wore black, seeing as this is a funeral.” Leaf called, crossing the backyard and thinking that Blue looked somewhat comical sitting in the only swing left of the pair, far too big for a play set that was meant for little kids.
“You look like some rom-com B-movie ‘staying with my estranged dad for the summer’ goth kid before their obligatory makeover.” He replied, reaching a hand out and tugging a loose string on her black denim jeans.
“The fact that you’ve seen a rom-com movie…” Leaf begins to mock, but Blue soon cuts her off.
“You’ve made me watch enough Christmas ones to rot my brain.” He pointed out.
“Well, as it turns out, my palette is more pastels and baby blue than mourning black.” She joked. “Sometimes I feel as if I stole my closet from a kindergartener.”
A small silence befell the pair of them.
“Thanks for coming.” Blue said, suddenly.
He felt stupid for calling her. They had not spoken with each other since the summer prior and that was just an awkward run in at the gym. He is about to step down from the leadership in Viridian City and move away, who knows for how long, and he is feeling regretful about what he has sacrificed along the way.
It as if someone was ripping away a piece of him. By removing the swing set, he was losing another part of his connection to Leaf. Blue knew she was in town for a couple of days, so he called and hoped for the best and here she was in his backyard, sitting cross-legged at the bottom of the slide.
“I can’t believe your dad is having this removed.” She complained. “I mean, neither of us can use it anymore and the fact it’s still standing is amazing but getting rid of it just because feels really cruel of him.”
“I guess, since Trace and Elaine left for their journey, it was just a waste to have it maintained.” Blue argued, but then realized he was trying to defend his father, and he did not care for that look. “You know how he is.”
Trace was Blue’s nephew, the son of his sister Daisy, while Elaine was the daughter of Leaf’s second cousin. They had left for their journeys in April and would likely return to Pallet Town through Cinnabar Island before the end of the year. The gym leader was excited to have them challenge him before he left for Lumiose City in the Spring.
Leaf laid against the slide, the bright yellow plastic feeling a little like it was burning her shoulders, even in November. The only black shirt she had in her childhood bedroom was a spaghetti strap tank top. A little too cold for the weather until she was in the sun, but her sweatshirt was conveniently tucked in her backpack.
“How are you not freezing?” Blue asked the same question she had been contemplating a minute earlier.
“I am, a little bit. The roasting plastic behind me is helping. How is this slide always warm?” She asked.
The young man chuckled. “State secret.”
She stuck her tongue out at him before tilting her head to look up the length of the slide.
“When we were younger, I always wanted to get married in your backyard.” The girl commented, off-handed.
“Why?” He pulled himself out of the swing, tugging at the sides of his jeans and his sweatshirt to fix them.
She shrugged. “I don’t know... It’s so big. Your grandfather’s ranch seems to go on forever, with rolling hills, a nice breeze, Pokémon roaming free. I always felt at home around here.”
He hummed. “The high probability of a wild Pokémon horde attacking the guests always figured on my wedding venue choice as a kid, too.”
“Shut up.” The brunette unfolded one leg and tried to kick him, which he managed to avoid. “I think I honestly thought… I mean, we played wedding enough. I kind of figured that maybe we really would get married someday.”
“I could see it.” He responded simply, as if it was enough.
“You could see us married someday?” She asked, sitting all the way up and reaching for her sweatshirt.
She puts her arms in but did not pull it over her head, wearing it upside down.
He nodded.
No-one ever took Blue seriously when he voiced an opinion or shared his emotions but she usually did. He felt as if it was worth a shot for him.
“Okay, well, I expect a ring, and for you to be nice and polite to the people you meet, like, 95 percent of the time.” She replied. “Just because you are two oceans away…”
“It’s just one if you go the other way around.” He corrects, petulantly.
She bits her bottom lip to stop herself from smiling. “Regardless, whether two oceans or one ocean or no ocean away, I still hear things and I am keeping tabs on you. I can get on a plane any time I want and kick your ass in up to fourteen business hours.”
He laughs heartily, something he feels he does not do often enough. “Yeah, well, Daisy’s got a biased opinion on what may consist treating people in a nice, polite manner.”
“I thought you wanted to marry me.” Leaf teased. “You’ve heard my terms.”
The woman stands up and crosses the distance between them, wrapping her arms around his neck tightly, unwilling to let it go.
“I’m going to miss you.” She whispered to him.
“Do you want to grab a bite to eat?” He offered, hoping to prolong the time she had available to spend with him. “Unless you want to chain yourself to the slide.”
“Yeah, sure.” She responded with a smile. “Lead the way.”
*_*_*_*_*
Time passed them by, and with it contact between them likewise dramatically diminished. The talk of marriage began feeling like a well-orchestrated dream rather than a memory.
Between the time difference, the distance and their busy lives in their respective universities, it was hard to keep up with each other. Leaf began studying Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Imperial University in Saffron City, while Blue enrolled at the Polytechnic Institute at Lumiose City, both incredibly intense programs that left little time for socializing.
She settled into big city life with great difficulty, finding an apartment and a part-time job to balance with school in her junior year. She heard from Blue sporadically, on birthdays or holidays or whenever something reminded them of each other.
Leaf mulled over inviting him to her graduation for a few days before finally texting him about it, telling him to come out early, that maybe the two of them could go to the beach at Fuchsia City together, or else they could do something he really missed about Kanto living.
He did not respond at all until, suddenly, late at night on her ridiculously tiny and overpriced Saffron City apartment, she receives a message. It was a photo of a airplane ticket for that day with the caption “I’m coming”.
Sometimes, she felt like a different person when she was away from Pallet Town for so long, as if she was not that girl a bit on the wild side, rolling down the hills, but when Blue is there, walking along the sidewalk at the big city with her, or jumping off the ledges with her on Route 1, it felt like she could be that kid once again.
“Campus isn’t too far from here.” She mentioned, as she walked along beside the auburn-haired man.
They had driven from the airport to her apartment to drop his bag off and now they were just walking around, chatting about favourite places and impending graduation.
“What are you going to do once you graduate? Do you have anything set up?” Blue asked.
“I got an offer from the Kahuna Office in Alola. They want someone to study the poisons endemic to the islands. It starts in two months. I’m really excited for it but... I am kind of afraid, too.” Leaf admitted.
Saffron City had been scary but she had flourished there eventually, and, while she knew she would equally manage to flourish in Alola too, she wished she was not going there all alone.
“Why are you so afraid?” He asked, encouraging. “You’ll kill it. I know it.”
“What would I do without your undue confidence in me?” The brunette woman joked. “I really wish I could take you to Alola with me.”
“Actually...”
“What?” She asked, stopping dead on her tracks and turning to look at him.
“I’m really glad that you’re going to Alola, because they offered me a spot in their Battle Tree and I decided to take it, if only to be closer to home. I had this whole plan that I would visit once every two months, and I would convince you how nice the sun and the beaches over there were, and then you would find a job there if only just to make me shut up about it. Then, I would… Well, I guess I can do it right now…” Blue pulled a small box out of his pocket and held it out to her. “I try to keep good on all my promises.”
“Shut up.” Leaf laughed, more out of nervousness than anything else as she took the box from him and opened it, the diamond ring inside just like he had said he would give her. “Blue, I...”
“You don’t have to say yes, but I wasn’t joking when I said I wanted to marry you. I know we’ve never even dated, but...” He breathed out. “You are my best friend, and I love you. I want to be with you.”
She nodded her head slowly, trying to comprehend what Blue had just said to her. When they were younger, playing in the yard together, she had certainly considered the possibility of marrying her best friend someday, but they had been kids back then. They were unaware of all the things that would pull them apart.
The woman also knew that, when he had asked her in his backyard on their half-joking funeral for his swing set, she had honestly considered it. The suggestion had settled in her heart and she had been hard-pressed to get rid of it.
“I think we need to hit a few milestones before we get married, but I could see it.” She replied.
The man smirked. “Yeah? Is that a yes?”
“Yes, Blue, it’s a yes.” She laughed. “Let’s just ease my family into the idea that I’m moving overseas, and then we tell them that we’re going to be married someday.”
Blue laughed. “They’ll come around.”

English Oak Leaf with Sodalite stone beads
Stone: Sodalite Metal: Copper Ear Wire: Sterling Silver
Note: As this item is handmade, the item you receive may have slight variations.
The English Oak Tree (latin: Quercus robur) is native to most of Europe, but is cultivated in temperate regions, and has naturalized in parts of China and North America. He is a large deciduous tree, with a large circumference up to 4 - 12 meters!
The Majesty Oak is the thickest tree in Great Britain, with a circumference of 12.2 meters. He generally grows for a few centuries, though there are some known to be older, especially if they are regularly coppiced. 'Kongeegen' ('Kings Oak') is estimated to be 1200 years old in Jaegerspris, Denmark, while another specimen in Kvilleken, Sweden, is over 1000 years old and has a 14m circumference.
The Oak Tree is a symbol of power and strength, wisdom and longevity.
Find it here.
