Hermione wasn't sure of what to believe in anymore. She had been told stories of the black mist and its hunger. Legends of children who treated their magic like a parasite, until it became one. Tales of violence, darkness and death... But none of them looked like this.
No story was of a boy who couldn't talk, couldn't be touched. No legend was about broken childs with broken bones. No story talked about an old letter carried in shaking fingers.
Hermione needed to help him, before the Obscurus inside of Harry could take away what little soul he had left.

Would anyone be interested in reading a fic where Harry Potter is an obscurial?
Respectably some tags would be dark Harry, slytherin Harry. So forth.
Also would be drarry.
There would be wolfstar and Regulus living.
And obviously Dumbledore bashing.
And maybe Snape adopting Harry.

Adding lore in hindsight can be damning. Just look at Dumbledore.
This man had a sister who was an obsucrial and a nephew. His ex love interest knew they were powerful and went after one to fuck with Dumbledore.
So here you have this canonical GENIUS of a man who has a "love above all else" mentality, and you're telling me he doesn't know about obscurials enough to say "hey maybe putting this boy with people who hate magic is a bad idea."
See, because with all that stuff added afterwards, this genius man with family members who have suffered this offlicition, would have most CERTAINLY learned all he could about obscurials.
Because why would he want that to happen again? He's already had so much heartbreak over what damage they can do to the people he loves and being used as a pawn in a WAR.
So then sure, he might not have wanted Harry to know he was a wizard or who he was so it didn't make him a brat. But his relatives could have just said "hey you're a wizard" and left the rest a secret.
But then it leaves room for a far more upsetting truth, which was that Dumbledore knew what would happen otherwise. If Harry knew he was a wizard and with his muggles HATING magic, Dumbledore 100% knew what would have happened.
He knew what those muggles were going to do, and took steps to assure Harry wouldn't become an obsucrial.
Now its fucked up, and taking the stance "He HAD to put him there because it was the only safe place to keep him away from dark wizards" maybe Dumbledore didn't want to see Harry suffering being an obscurial on top of everything else.
It was a very fucked up, maybe, small act of kindness. Because either 1. Harry would have died from the obscurial before he got to hogwarts thus causing some MAJOR problems in the wizarding world.
2. Harry would have lived a little longer to learn what was wrong with him and this poor boy would have suffered so much more.
3. Harry would have lived a little longer, wanted revenge, and then you have an obscurial teaming up with a dark lord all over again
4. some forth other thing i haven't thought of yet.
Anyways, Dumbledore 100% knew what would have happened if Harry knew about his magic from all the back lore that was added. It changed his character and it makes his character less "just morally gray".

.. drip...
drip...
drip...
.. she was wet.
A warmth, fiery almost, trickling slowly over the gentle curve of her forehead, it continued further. Following the sharp lines of her cheekbone as it continued down in its trajectory. Marring her skin, though it was nothing when compared to the pain of past heartaches.
Lips parting ever slightly from one another, a light sting shot through them. The rush of air drawn over the open cut was nothing new, however. No. In fact, it was a familiar sensation. And despite herself, in some sick, twisted way, it brought her the tiniest bit of comfort. Amongst all of the chaos; it had been the constant. Normal. Truthfully, it was all she knew. And now-..?
Arms trembling as they rose from her sides, Y/n let her glacial gaze fall. Resting upon her hands. Her porcelain complexion stained a deep crimson as blood - hers, or other; she wasn't sure - continued to trail over her palms. Dripping from the very tips of her fingers only to then create tiny pools around her.
.. For the love of Merlin... what had she done..?
The question had barely left the dazed mist that was her mind before she was lifting her head. Her arctic hues lingering on the scene lain before her.
Smoke billowed. Rising from the manor, and as it did, furniture from the second floor toppled towards the ground. Though, whatever sound it may have made upon impact was lost on her. The ringing in her ears was deafening. The remnants of the blast still echoing through her very core. Rubble was scattered about the ground from the gaping hole left in the side of the manor, crushing below it the beautiful gardens that she'd once spent many of her days escaping into. Now though... it simply wasn't possible. Not after what she'd-...
".. Y/n..!"
Panic struck her heart like lightning.
.. N-No... if they found her-...
"Y/n..! Where the bloody hell are you..!"
The words had barely finished leaving her older brother's lips before she was on the move. Turning tail in a flash; Y/n took off. Her bloodied palms gripping desperately to the tattered remains of her dress, the souls of her feet thundered over the earth beneath her as she carried herself as far from her family's estate as she could.
There was no turning back... not now...
• ━━━━━ ⋅☾ ☽⋅ ━━━━━ •
A few weeks or so later...
Fingers gliding once more over the braille imprinted onto the parchment, the frown already etched over Ominis' features deepened. His brows knitting together slightly alerting his best friend to the fact that, whatever the situation, it didn't seem to be getting any better.
".. Another letter from your family..?" Despite the concern in his voice, Sebastian did, however, attempt to keep the mood light. Taking a gentle jab at his friend by way of elbowing his ribs before, distractedly, turning back to his plate, "Someone's getting popular. This is what..? The fifth one in just a few weeks..?"
".. Regretfully."
".. Care to share with the class..?" He didn't need to look at his best friend to know that he was wallowing. Something had been eating at Ominis now for the better part of two weeks, and while he knew that he shouldn't pry; that the blond boy would tell him, eventually, what it was that was bugging him. Sometimes, a little nudge in the right direction didn't hurt.
".. No."
"Ominis..."
A heavy sigh falling through his lips, it was another moment of hesitancy before Ominis spoke. His voice soft... tinged with worry, ".. there was an incident... and not all are yet accounted for..."
An incident..?
Curiosity piqued, a small bout of worry for his friend settling in his stomach at the new information provided, Sebastian turned his gaze towards the boy. Staring, perhaps a few moments longer than he'd meant to, he finally managed to once again find his voice, "Ominis... I'm sorry. I didn't know... Is there anything I coul-..."
"Oh, ha ha. Very funny."
The dulcet tones of the familiar Irish accent catching the attention of the two boys, both turned their heads towards the girl in question. Their eyes lingering upon Imelda Reyes, despite only one being able to actually see, as she seemed intent on kicking up a stink about... who knew what this time.
"Whoever's castin' charms on my plate, you best quit it now. I'm not in the mood."
"Uhh... Imelda..?" Movement having caught the corner of his eyes, Sebastian turned back to his own dinner. Pushing himself back slightly in his seat as he watched the dish slowly begin to rise up, causing food to topple onto the polished wooden surface of the table as it began to tilt. And with a quick glance about the Great Hall, it was made more than clear that they weren't the only victims in this little prank, ".. don't think you're alone with this one..."
All around the hall, objects were being lifted into the air. Plates... goblets... silverware. It seemed nothing was safe as food was spilt about them. Splattering messily about the ground, the house tables and, much to Sebastian's utter delight and amusement, even the faculty table didn't seem immune to whatever shenanigans were being had at the school's expense. Though at the sound of the large double doors opening at the end of the hall; all heads turned sharply. The sound of wood slamming against stone resonating through the expansive room, and for reasons beyond reasonable explanation, Sebastian found a shiver running down the length of his spine.
"What..? Sebastian- what is it..?"
Just one of the many who had gotten to their feet while circumstances continued to play out, Ominis didn't need the ability to see as he reached out. The letter received from his family now lain long forgotten as he gripped firmly onto his best friend's arm.
".. It's... a girl..." Surprise overtaking his features, Sebastian could do little more than stare at the young woman causing such a stir. However, even as he did, she seemed to search the room. Almost frantically so.
".. O-Ominis..?"
One word. That was all it took.
Despite how softly it had been spoken, the word echoed about the hall, and before it had time to settle, all eyes had turned towards the Slytherin table. And in turn, toward the Gaunt boy who suddenly felt his heart gripped in a vice.
No... it couldn't be...
All rational escaping him at this point, Sebastian had barely a moment to react before his best friend tore off around the table. Wand gripped tightly in his hand, tip pulsing a fiery red helping to keep him on course as he rushed the young lady calling out for him. The desperation in her voice was almost too much for him to bear. And as he reached her, he found his hands taking purchase upon her hips. Helping to keep her steady as he ignored the sound of his wand clattering upon the stone by his feet.
".. I'm here. I-It's going to be alright..."
Her own hands rising, Y/n gripped desperately to the front of his robes. Her sparkling blues searching the familiar clouds that were now right in front of her, ".. I-... I didn't-... help me..."
Whatever drive she had keeping her going the past couple of weeks finally subsiding, the girls body went slump in his arms. And only having been a few moments behind his friend, Sebastian's arms automatically shot to the girls body. Helping, as gently as he could, to lower her to the floor with his friend. Though as his lips parted, intent on questioning the strange scene, they quickly shut. His attention briefly distracted by the resonating clanging of the dishware crashing down around them, accompanied by the shouts and screams of their fellow students. Majority of whom had ducked or taken cover so as not to be caught in the unexpected showering of gold.
Pausing, wanting to be sure nothing more was going to happen, Sebastian turned his full attention back to Ominis, "Okay... want to tell me what in Merlin's beard that was..?"
Ominis' head was shaking. Quickly. Though not out of rejection towards his friends questions, but rather in sheer disbelief, "It-... It's not possible... she's a squib... she's not supposed to have magic..."
Sebastian managed to catch himself before scoffing. Clearly... there had been some major misunderstanding. Because you didn't have to be blind in order to see that, very obviously, this girl did not a squib make.
".. No shit. Who in Merlin's name is she, though..?"
Ominis' voice was soft as he responded. His head lifting until, eerily, he was able to look his best friend in the eyes. And once more, Sebastian felt a chill run through his spine.
".. she's my sister... Y/n Gaunt..."

DPxHP HC - Thoughts On Obscurials & Wizardry
Something I don't understand is why, when Danny is brought to a Wizarding school & Danny refuses to cooperate, why don't people tell him that if he doesn't use his magic & train it, that he runs the risk of developing an Obscurial?
Like, all they'd have to say is that his magic will eat him from the inside out & that it could result in wild, violent, & dangerous outbursts that could potentially hurt, if not kill, others.
If nothing else, he'd listen to a warning that suggests he or his loved ones could be hurt through his actions.
---
While Illvermorny is recognized as the wizarding school in America, the truth is, it's just the biggest & most recognized. In reality, America is too big to only have 1.
Instead, there are several, the second most famous one resides near Salem, while another can be found in New Orleans, which also has a vast magical community & has America's equivalent of Diagon Alley, which can be found under Bourbon Street in the catacombs, Bazar du Sous-Sol du Laveau.
There are also several small wizarding schools that teach courses on traditional Native American magics, as well as other courses on the magics of other cultures. That is, alongside American magic which is a mix of different culture's magical disciplines.
Like, I can absolutely see Amity being a sort of no-man's land for magic considering the amount of ghosts there are there. It'd absolutely be a Statute of Secrecy risk.
But at the same time, the Salem Magical Institute, the New Orleans Seminary of Voodoo (or NOSoV), known locally as New Orleans Séminaire du Vaudou, & any other schools available would have to take in the magical Amity children because of the possibility of them becoming Obscurials & becoming even bigger risks to the Statute of Secrecy.
At the same time, I imagine that MACUSA has tried to Obliviate the no-maj residents to get them to forget the strange, solid ghosts that have been appearing in the town. Which, I think it'd be interesting if the magical community has had a remarkably small amount of encounters with. Like, the most well-documented Hereafter/IR ghosts that they know about are poltergeists & there's still very little on them. I read a fic where Constantine has never actually met one & even once compares them to demons alongside ghosts even though I think the IR ghosts would find that insulting & inaccurate. I mean, demons are evil by default. Ghosts are more ambiguous.
That is, even though wizards & wiccans use Lethe river water in forgetfulness potions, they get it from an old fountain in Greece where an ancient temple to Hades lays. As such, it's been largely forgotten by the wizarding world that the fountain was built by an ancient necromantic priest of Hades, Persephone, & their children, Zagreus & Melinoe, or that it's from the Underworld, which is just a small section of the IR.
However, I feel like ectoplasm has a small resistance to certain magics, especially the Obliviate spell. As such, because most of the townspeople are in some stage of liminality, they can't be Obliviated.
Either way, they might not want to have anything to do with anything that violates the Statute of Secrecy, but in order to minimize & control the problem as much as possible, they have to.
Like, no one seems to take this fact into account when they write DPxHP crossovers.
---
Another thing is the reactions of the Fenton parents to the revelation of magic existing. Particularly, that they would be very stubborn about disbelieving it.
Both of them.
They're both scientists after all.
Though Jack, having come from a line of supernatural hunters, would be much easier to get to believe it, but at the same time, he is very much against it. He was always the black sheep of the family & was always very terrible at the clan's apotropaic magics & never really understood the process. Like, he just couldn't wrap his head around the 'mechanics.' So, he rejected it, asserting that it was all phoney & hocus-pocus & he instead sought out a way to fight ghosts using something he did understand. Which was science & engineering.
On the other hand, Maddie would absolutely NOT believe in it at all & would be utterly convinced that it was all hooey & it would be like pulling teeth to get her to believe otherwise. Not only that, but she'd get angry about people trying to convince her & her family otherwise.
It wouldn't be until it all comes to a head, possibly Jazz developing an Obscurial & begin to slowly die, that she'd realize that it's real. But even then, she wouldn't react well. It would destroy everything she thought she knew about the world while Jack would adjust... rather clumsily, but he'd adjust.
Like, I imagine that Danny, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, & Ellie would all have magic & that when an eagle first came with Jazz's letter, & Maddie was the one who read it & scoffed, then threw it away.
It'd be a similar scene to the first book/movie where the owls kept coming. Only here, Maddie would find a way to repel the animals. Maybe some sort of force field around the town, which could be what caused the issue in the first place.
Then, as more & more kids would start getting ill with some unknown illness that lashes out & destroys things, then begin dying, Jazz included. After the first couple of deaths, MACUSA Aurers would come & use their magic to destroy the field.
After which, they'd escort representatives of the Salem Magical Institute, New Orleans Seminary of Voodoo, or Illermorny, as well as healers & Obscurial experts, to the homes of magical children with new letters & begin to try & save as many children as possible.
There would be stern lectures on the negligence of magic & the dangers of Obscurials.
For families like the Mansons, there would also be a clarification that while the sort of witches they were always warned about did exist, they are by far, NOT the norm.
That magic itself isn't evil, rather it's neutral, & that it's just something you're born with. It only becomes a real danger through misuse or disuse.
The only way to become the sort of witches that they fear is for an individual to make a bargain with some dark entity, either for magic or more power.
That there is a distinct difference between the wiccans & wizards (which is what I call the general wizarding public) of wizarding world society, called light magic, & the witches & warlocks of dark magic.
Even still, I don't think the Manson parents would approve. Ida would be supportive if cautious, while Jeremy would be dubious, both due to their religion, but not Pam. Pamela would reject the training of magic outright as a result of generations of anti-magic & Scourer thinking.
It's from her side of the family that Sam gets her magic from & one of her ancestors was a dark witch burned at the stake during the Salem Witch Trials before the invention of the bluebell flame spell. This resulted in magiphobic ideologies in her family &, as a result, they tried to reject their abilities.
Pam had always feared that her daughter would turn out like her ancestor & now, she feels that her fears have been realized.
Though, despite canon, the true emotion behind all her anger & derision is legitimate fear for her daughter.
---
Currently, American magic-users get their wands from a wandmaker in New Orleans: Violetta Beauvais. She creates scarily powerful wands out of swamp mayhaw wood & hairs from rougarous, the dog-headed monsters native to the swamps of Louisiana.

An Obscurial is a child who repressed his or her magic out of fear or persecution. The magic ends up poisoning the child from the inside; most Obscurials are dead by the age of ten.
Ariana Dumbledore was an Obscurial, due to being attacked and traumatized by three Muggle boys at the age of six. She refused to use her magic, and “it turned inward and drove her mad.”
Albus Dumbledore noted that Obscurials could be cured by replacing their feelings of alienation with belonging. Credence Barebone, living with Mary Lou until his midtwenties - shockingly old for an Obscurial - never had that.
But what about Ariana? Ariana lived the rest of her life with her mother and her brothers who loved her and cared about her, in a wizarding house where nobody would have been shunned for using magic. Her attack was only a onetime incident, and there were years afterward for her to slowly heal. Did her feelings of alienation, of persecution, of fear and abnormality truly last all that time?
Maybe she was healing. Ariana lived to fourteen, after all, despite most Obscurials dying by ten. Maybe, given more time, her magic would have healed.
But then Gellert Grindelwald came over, and Aberforth confronted him and Albus, and Ariana came down the stairs to intervene in the following magical battle.

Should Harry be an Obscurial? (theory)
I'm re-reading the Harry Potter saga, and I've realized that in the third book (Prisoner of Azkaban), there's a quote about the Dursleys having oppressed Harry's magic for a lifetime.
We know that an obscurial is created this way, as was the case with Aurelius Dumbledore (Credence Barebone) and, as far as we can tell, with Ariana Dumbledore.
So, following that logic, could Harry Potter have been an obscurial too, if the concept had already existed at the time of the books' release?

Mistaken Symptoms (ST Headcanon)
TLDR: Aurie could be mistaken for one of the Flayed due to a mistaken symptom.
Easily Aurelius could have been mistaken for a Flayed during the Starcourt Mall events. His Obscurus under his skin moved in a way that mimicked the Flayed. But he lacked connection besides that. Kind of a downside given the blackened veins are the most obvious next to anything else.
They tend to move around his arms at times, mostly he tries to keep the Obscurus and blackening veins hidden under long sleeves or coats.
Billy’s arm for reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pics used from here because gif doesn’t want to work: credit to phantom-evil
While he likes the cold, he can withstand heat and cold weather like any other person. So basically turn up the heat and well, he’d probably freak out but the Obscurus wouldn’t leave like the Mind Flayer could. And if anything, would attack and kill anyone that harmed it’s host in the room even if Aurie was tied down.
The voice in his head is not to serve or promising power or something. Instead it shows it’s need to protect it’s host and tries everything to keep them alive and happy. It’s protection sometimes comes through with trying to harm or kill those that harm it’s host. So far, Aurelius can control it mostly so it won’t kill random bullies anymore.
When he either overuses his power or is getting sicker than his skin gets paler and the blackening veins are more pronounced and usually in a vast majority of areas on his body while before it is sometimes on his arms. Basically his own parasitic host is slowly killing him from the inside out while trying to protect him. It doesn’t seek out other hosts to infect.
But an easy mistake can be noticed if no other dots are connected. Aurie can accept he can be seen as a sort of Flayed that has no master and isn’t going after anyone. But could anyone believe him?
Now, is a Mind Flayer or Flayed stronger than Aurie? It depends. If, say, Flayed Billy went after Aurelius who was unarmed and not prepared for a fight, he could easily overpower and probably even kill the guy before the Obscurus could come out.
Now if Aurelius had been prepared, than maybe the Obscurus could take down a Flayed or even the Mind Flayer if  there was enough time and energy to burn with the host getting exhausted or nearly dying from overuse of power.
It all depends on who gets the first shot. Take the Obscurus and wand away and Aurelius is a little frail and may not last in a physical fight.
And given the Mind Flayer had more of a body, either in smoke form or flesh form. Aurelius’ Obscurus has no form, just a mass that is usually very deadly and destructive. It bursts out of the wizard and reforms back into him when done.
Tumblr media
Basically if it helps others understand what he is, he usually goes with a Flayed since it seems easier than telling the truth. Or calls himself a Nightwalker or Shade as a D&D analogy.

what people should know about obscurials :
it can starts from a single traumatizing even or from daily abuse from muggles.
having love and care can not be enough to cure them (Ariana Dumbledore)
obscurus can be controled through emotional control (Snape was an unequaled Occlumens)
They can learn magic with a wand and be powerful.
Severus Snape checks all the boxes.
Headcanon approved ! Period.

I imagine Ariana was incredibly brave, but due to her early childhood trauma, never really got to prove this to herself. Instead, her magic turned against her in her refusal to ever use it again.
Or; The tragically overlooked story of a very underrated character.
Tumblr media
Obscurial; is the person whose body is a host for the obscurus.
Obscurus; an unstable, uncontrollable dark force that bursts out and attacks, and then vanishes.
The obscurus is created as a manifestation of a young witch or wizard’s repressed energy (magic).

Since watching Fantastic Beasts, I've always wondered...
How did Harry not become an Obscurial?
"An Obscurial was a young wizard or witch who had developed a dark parasitical magical force, known as an Obscurus, as a result of their magic being suppressed through psychological or physical abuse."
Knowing the Dursleys are absolutely awful to Harry and it is clear they neglect him, verbally and sometimes physically abuse him through the series, it only leaves to the imagination how he lived growing up. What doesn't make sense is that Harry isn't an obscurial or at the very least has no trouble controlling his magic.
(Bellow, there's a list of things the Dursleys have done to Harry, can skip the list if wanted, it's just a small recompilation of things the Dursleys have done to Harry)
They had him live in a cupboard under the stairs for most of his life and the only reason they gave him a room was because they thought they were being spied on by wizards
The Dursleys canonically didn’t like Harry before meeting their nephew and knowing if Harry had magic.
Dudley bullies Harry and his parents do nothing to stop him
They talk bad about him in front of him
They locked him in his room in CoS, put bars on his window, and delivered small amounts of food through a cat door on his door
They abandoned him at the train station (in the books)
Wanted to leave Harry in the car while they spent a day celebrating Dudley’s birthday at the zoo.
They let Aunt Marge treat him poorly
Vernon tried to strangle Harry in OotP because he thought Harry had used magic
Had to use his on the run godfather as blackmail to get the Dursleys to treat him nice.
It is narrated he was used to small amounts of food, at one point, Harry had to ask his friends for food after the Dursleys started giving him even less food
Harry was punished for accidental magic when Petunia knew, from Lily being her own sister, wizards and witches cannot control accidental magic.
He was nearly hit in the head with a frying pan and would've been if he hadn't dodged
He learned "not to ask questions"
An actual quote from the books: “long experience had taught him to remain out of arm’s reach of his uncle whenever possible.”
Vernon thought he could beat the magic out of Harry and thought that was a perfectly fine mentality.
He tells one of his friends at the end of the first book the Dursleys would be disappointed he didn't die
And there might be more that I missed or forgot to mention.
Now, if you did read the list, you might be thinking, most of this are just forms of abuse (which still are pretty concerning) but most don't enter in the category "result of their magic being suppressed through psychological or physical abuse". But there are some like "Vernon thought he could beat the magic out of Harry and thought that was a perfectly fine mentality" And "Harry was punished for accidental magic when Petunia knew, from Lily being her own sister, wizards and witches cannot control accidental magic" that could enter this category, and risk him suppressing his magic to avoid punishments.
Credence's (or Aurelius') caretaker most likely didn't know Credence was magic, but the whole anti-witches campaign she had going and the fact that shes physically abused him, was enough to cause him to suppress his magic until the point of becoming an obscurial. The Dursleys knew fully well Harry was magic and most likely wanted him to suppress it so they could keep up their normal family tale, still, Harry never showed signs of becoming an obscurial.
Ariana became an Obscurial after suffering extreme emotional trauma, something Harry has experienced pre and during his time at Hogwarts (with and without the Dursleys' help).
Still, it is never touched how Harry didn't become and obscurial... is it because of his connection to Voldemort? Or the protection of Lily? Or was Harry just really that strong?
The Harry Potter plot is kind of a mess, and it sometimes becomes even more confusing if focusing in the movies only. As the first books of Harry Potter came out before Fantastic Beasts and Deadly Hollows(where we have the case of Ariana), it's possible she-who-must-not-be-named didn't even think about obscurials before addressing Dumbledore's family issues and Credence.

Note
i still don't understand how Credence never healed from his "disease" even after he accepted that he was a wizard ? That's why i loved the theory that it could have been Ariana's obscurus inside him. Obscurials are not supposed to have a wand and use their magic. JKR said that an obscurus comes from self hatred and trauma. It's not really coherent with what we see in the movie.
I think it is.
The obscurus is described as a parasite. t starts because of the repression of magic, but it's not the physical manifestation of the individual's repressed magic. It latches onto the person. It doesn't disappear the moment the use of magic is normalized, because ultimately the trauma and hatred are still there.
For example, in SoD Credence is more functional in the sense of using magic and channelling it through his wand, but he is still in an unhealthy environment that is feeding on his sadness, his isolation and his pain. In fact, he had a healthier relationship with his obscurus when he was with Nagini who supported him emotionally, accepted him and did not tried to use him. And if Miller wasn't removed from WB projects for other reasons, I think that being with Aberforth and Albus could still help him.
On the other hand, I feel that the same obscurus latching onto members of the same family who have never met when one is not even in the same contenent where the other was when going through their ordeal feels more far-fetched and I don't see the purpose.
Obviously that's subjective and we are all allowed to have a preference for different kinds of storytelling.
