Dark Patronus
I had this idea today, and I just couldn't get it out of my head.
Tumblr media
So, imagine a patronus made of dark/bad memories instead of happy ones...
Not sure what it would do yet, any thoughts?

what people should know about obscurials :
it can starts from a single traumatizing even or from daily abuse from muggles.
having love and care can not be enough to cure them (Ariana Dumbledore)
obscurus can be controled through emotional control (Snape was an unequaled Occlumens)
They can learn magic with a wand and be powerful.
Severus Snape checks all the boxes.
Headcanon approved ! Period.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
To be honest, nobody had really ever noticed Y/N L/N until he came back from winter break with a black eye and a broken nose; and with just one snide comment from a certain Potions professor, he promptly exploded into the most terrifying thing any of them had ever seen.
An Obscurus.
It’d been the first class back from the break. Someone clearly must’ve hated the fifth years, because the new schedule listed Potions as the first class on a Monday morning. Exhausted, all of the fifth years had trudged in and taken a seat, too tired to care about any accidental inter-house mingling.
Professor Snape was having none of it. His beady eyes flashed as he surveyed his class of half-asleep teenagers.
“When an adult says good morning, it is polite to respond.”
“Good morning, Professor Snape,” the class mumbled in a completely exasperated tone.
His lip had curled back into a sneer. Opening his mouth to, presumably, berate the class, he was interrupted by the late arrival of a student.
“Mr. L/N. How wonderful of you to join us. We surely wouldn’t want to waste any more of your precious time.”
The boy in the doorway tried to shrink in on himself. He looked so small and lost with that busted up nose and eye. He started to make an apology, but made it barely two words in before Snape struck again.
“Perhaps it would be beneficial for you all to take a note of Mr. L/N as living proof that Charles Darwin’s theory was not without some error. Mr. L/N, if you would research the term natural selection and write ten inches of parchment on the subject. You can turn it in to me tomorrow morning. Take a seat.”
The boy’s cheeks burned with embarrassment and shame as he scrambled to a seat in the back row.
“Natural selection,” the professor intoned. “The riddance of those who are not well-suited to their environment. That is, abnormalities or freaks of nature.”
The class glanced back at the previously unknown boy. Who was this kid? Why did Snape have a vendetta against him?
Something in the ashamed boy’s eyes flashed. At the word ‘freaks’, he visibly broke.
A low rumble filled the classroom, making Snape pause mid-sentence. With a resounding crack, the flagstones just inches from the professor’s feet split and shattered, like someone had taken a sledgehammer to them.
Snape jumped back, his head snapping up in a panic. The walls began to shake and rumble threateningly. From the belittled boy in the back row, an odd dark mist was beginning to form, slowly swirling around his body before engulfing him completely.
The kids around him scrambled away in a panic, the entire class rushing to the doors. Theodore sat still, stunned as he watched the terrifying scene.
One of his friends tugged on his sleeve, shouting something that was immediately swallowed by the sound as the odd swirling mist began to pick up speed, whipping papers and quills around the room.
The crack that ran through the flagstone floor began to spread with an ominous rumbling, the stone walls beginning to shake and spiderweb with fractures. A dust cloud of debris emanated from every fissure, choking up the air and reducing any visibility.
A sound, like a small child crying, seemed to echo around the room. Theo, stuck in place, watched with wide eyes as the mist- no, whirlwind, began growing, getting more and more violent.
The whirlwind lashed out, reducing Snape’s desk to splinters. The crying got louder, and a sharp burst of magic from the whirlwind sent Theodore flying, hitting the ground hard and scrambling for cover under a table.
For just a split second, so fast that Theo barely had time to notice, the mist of the whirlwind parted, revealing a white glowing form in the center. The form was vaguely humanoid in shape, curled up on the ground in the fetal position with its hands clasped tight over its ears. Its shoulders heaved with the force of its sobs, and then it was gone, swallowed back up by the storm.
Theo wracked his brain for the beaten boy’s name, scrabbling for any memory he had of the kid who had always previously gone unnoticed.
“Y/N!”
The storm…paused, sort of. The debris that had been in the process of being thrown across the room halted midair, hanging suspended for a split second before whipping back around with a stronger fury.
The shattering of glass made Theo instinctively cover his face, smashed potions and vials sending shards of certain death flying through the air.
“Y/N! Y/N, you have to stop!” Theodore shouted, pleaded.
The storm howled with shrieking fury, leaking anguish and total despair.
“Y/N! He’s wrong about you!”
A chair was sent hurtling towards him.
Ducking, Theo continued talking, raising his voice over the wailing of the storm.
“I want to help, Y/N!”
The storm paused again, for longer this time. A cauldron, suspended midair just inches from whacking into Theo’s skull, dripped some sort of potion onto his leg, burning something awful.
That was a problem for a different time, Theo figured.
“I want to! I want to help! You don’t deserve to be treated the way you are!”
The storm drew back a bit, the iron cauldron clanging to the floor and spinning around in circles as the dark mist of the storm retreated.
Theo tried his last saccharine sentiment. “You deserve to be happy!”
With a loud whoosh, the storm completely vanished, quills and chairs dropping to the floor with a loud clatter. The boy—Y/N—sat on the floor in the same way as the glowing form had; fetal position, hands over his ears. His skin crackled, and dark sparks snapped and fizzed from it, although he seemed to pay no mind.
Theodore stumbled to his feet from under his table and carefully picked his way through the debris of the classroom to kneel down a comfortable distance away from the crying boy.
“Hey, hey, there you go. That’s better. Are you alright?”
Y/N looked up with a tear-stricken expression, wiping his sleeve across his face and sniffling. “‘m not a freak, I swear. Please don’t send me back.”
“You’re not,” Theo soothed. “I won’t. Snape was way out of bounds with that one.”
Y/N sniffled again, a fresh wave of tears streaming down his face. “He called me a freak.”
At the sight of the boy before him, sobbing pathetically over his douchebag teacher, Theo felt himself burn with rage.
How could anyone hurt this boy? Who’s done absolutely nothing wrong?
“I’ll make him pay, sweetheart. Don’t worry.”

Obscurial!Reader is a carbon copy of Klaus Hargreaves - a choatic pansexual who does way too many drugs to cope and is learning to use his powers in weird situations
Tw: Mentions of drug use
I could see that! I can’t help but imagine Madam Pomfrey having to care for and tend to Obscurial!Reader when he’s going through withdrawls. I can imagine Albus or Minerva getting Snape to come up with some kind of potion substitute for the Reader that has similar effects as the drugs he takes but not nearly being as harmful to the Reader in general, just an overall safer concoction for him to take that still does what the Reader is so dependent on the drugs for. Minerva especially would worry about the Reader’s drug use and how dependent he is on them, she’s understanding given what the Reader’s gone through but it still concerns her to no end.
I also can’t help but think how ashamed the Reader will feel carrying his addiction with him as he works at Hogwarts. I think the kids being around, particularly the ones who latch on to him would really have him heavily wanting to not need the drugs anymore; for both his sake and to be a good role model for the students. The absolute shame and guilt he would have if anyone, especially any of the students, happened upon him in the middle of using or being found completely unconscious and unresponsive after the fact. He’d feel like he could never comeback from that, he’d feel like an absolute failure and bad influence on the kids and would feel like he had no other choice but to leave Hogwarts to be on his own again. He doesn’t want to corrupt the kids around him or have them be so disappointed in him.

Would anyone be interested in reading a fic where Harry Potter is an obscurial?
Respectably some tags would be dark Harry, slytherin Harry. So forth.
Also would be drarry.
There would be wolfstar and Regulus living.
And obviously Dumbledore bashing.
And maybe Snape adopting Harry.

Snape & Neville
Many people believe Snape is very nasty towards Neville because Neville could have been the Chosen One or because his parents were aurors, but I don’t agree with those headcanons.
Neville is a traumatised boy. His parents were tortured so badly that they lost their minds. He’s grown up without them with a very strict grandmother as his guardian. His family is an old pureblood family and while they are against the pureblood ideology, they still expect a lot from their heirs. Neville’s parents’ fate most likely only increases pressure put upon him. Neville’s uncle almost killed him to squize some magic out of him, as if saying that it’s better to be dead than a Squib. Neville got his father’s wand instead of the one that chose him, as if being told that he had to be like his father, even if he’s just a sad, scared child.
All that turns Neville into a soft version of Obscurial. He doesn’t fully control his magic. We see it especially during the Potions lessons. At the very first lesson Neville somehow turns his potion into a very corrosive substance that melts his couldron and forces his classmates to climb on their desks. Later in the fourth year we hear that he melted six couldrons during about three months. Neville believes himself to be almost a Squib, but he’s very powerful. All the other students who don’t always succeed in Potions only manage to make some too watery or too thick fluid of the wrong colour that simply doesn’t work, doesn’t do anything.
I can imagine Snape having nightmares about Neville with a melting couldron, surrounded by poisonous fumes, killing Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy and all the other students, because Snape hasn’t managed to make him understand. Those lessons must be terrible for him. In this class there’s Harry Potter who looks like his father that used to bullied Snape, who is disobedient and inattentive, and whose presence reminds Snape of his enormous guilt. There’s also Draco Malfoy who tells his family everything and who has to believe Snape is on his side like a good Death Eater, so that in the future his influencial father can be his witness before Voldemort. There’re also Crabbe and Goyle—also sons of Death Eaters. It’s already very stressful and then there’s Neville with his dangerous potions that can kill everybody in a minute.
Snape doesn’t know how to deal with someone like Neville. Snape has no pedagogical education, no experience. He learnt how to teach by imitating his own teachers who finished school in the first half of the 20th century or even in the 19th century. About a decade before Snape started teaching, physical violence was still allowed as a punishment at Hogwarts.
It’s worth noting that Snape doesn’t take points from Neville and he only gives him one detention after he melted six couldrons.
So what Snape does to Neville is deeply wrong and very misguided but it’s just an attempt to teach him Potions. It doesn’t stem from malice or personal revenge.
And we know it, because when Snape begins to teach DADA—after Neville was encouraged by Lupin, after he learnt much in the Dumbledore’s Army, after he fought in the Ministry, after he got his own wand, after he gained a lot of confidence in his magical abilities—Snape doesn’t bully Neville. It proves that it was a matter of Neville’s performance at Potions, nothing more.

do you have thoughts on ariana dumbledore?
Like about her character or about her situation?
Because we don't really know Ariana as a person at all. So, I can't really analyze her. I can have thoughts about her situation and what was going on with her magic.
I should note I don't consider anything about Obscurials from the Fantastic Beasts canon. I think it's a retcon and I don't like it. I mean, you’re telling me Obscurials are created when wizards bottle up their magic and then say Harry "cupboard under the stairs" Potter didn't become one? I don't buy it.
So, let's take a look at the tragedy that is Ariana Dumbledore's existence:
So, the information about Ariana is quite scarce when looking just at the books. And most sources are unreliable. Rita Skeeter lies more often than not. Elphias Doge thinks the sun shines out of Albus Dumbledore's ass. Aunt Muriel just wants mean gossip. Then there are the brothers, Albus and Aboforth, Albus with their own biases and agendas, leaving Abeforth as the best source about Ariana (even if he has his own biases).
But, limited information is when theorizing is the most fun.
I don't think she was an Obscurial
As I mentioned above I don't believe Obscurials are a thing in the Wizarding World of the books. The main reason I mentioned above is Harry. We know Harry, Tom, Snape, and Merope were all mistreated heavily as children and none of them become an Obscurial. Harry says so himself:
Numbly Harry thought of how the Dursleys had once shut him up, locked him away, kept him out of sight, all for the crime of being a wizard. Had Dumbledore’s sister suffered the same fate in reverse: imprisoned for her lack of magic? Had Dumbledore truly left her to her fate while he went off to Hogwarts to prove himself brilliant and talented?
(DH, page 137)
Harry was raised to not use his magic. To bottle it up and not use it, and yet, neither he nor any other wizard with similar circumstances became an Obscurial. It's weird that Obscurials could exist and we never heard of such creatures in the books themselves. If they did exist, I would assume muggleborns and muggle-raised wizards would be watched more closely for how dangerous they could be. Personally, I don't think Obscurials exist at all. It doesn't make sense within the universe we know.
So what was going on with Ariana?
“When my sister was six years old, she was attacked, by three Muggle boys. They’d seen her doing magic, spying through the back garden hedge: She was a kid, she couldn’t control it, no witch or wizard can at that age. What they saw, scared them, I expect. They forced their way through the hedge, and when she couldn’t show them the trick, they got a bit carried away trying to stop the little freak doing it.”
....
“It destroyed her, what they did: She was never right again. She wouldn’t use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet and scared and harmless.
(DH, page 479)
These are two quotes from Aboforth about what happened to Ariana and how her magic responded. That same magic that eventually killed their mother, Kendra.
Now, we don't really know what these muggle boys did. It could have been sexual assault, even if Ariana was only 6 (as gross and horrifying as it is), it could've been they beat her up badly, we don't know. Whatever it was, it was incredibly traumatic to both her body and mind.
I wrote about how magic is very connected to a wizard's or witch's intentions and emotions and I believe that is the key to understanding what happened with Ariana. We also know, that when a witch or wizard is hurt, their magic will attempt to heal them. We also know from Harry and Neville that a child's magic will try to keep them out of harm's way when they can't control it yet:
Great Uncle Algie came round for dinner, and he was hanging me out of an upstairs window by the ankles when my Great Auntie Enid offered him a meringue and he accidentally let go. But I bounced — all the way down the garden and into the road.
(PS, page 91)
Dudley’s gang had been chasing him as usual when, as much to Harry’s surprise as anyone else’s, there he was sitting on the chimney.
(PS, page 21)
So, I wondered, what would happen if a magical child got so traumatized they were stuck in a fight or flight state? What if they feel under threat constantly? Well, I'd expect their magic to act up, as it always does when a young witch or wizard is under threat.
Basically, what I think is going on with Ariana's magic is kind of like a muggle allergy. Her magic (white blood cells, essentially) that wants to protect her and heal her, registers everything and everyone, even Ariana herself, as a threat it needs to fight. So it lashes out unpredictably like any child's accidental magic when under threat.
And the descriptions from Aboforth really sound like a child's accidental magic trying to keep the child safe by going highwire. I think she actually was sickly. I can't imagine her magic left her completely unharmed. It was also likely exhausting to constantly have her magic stretched thin trying to protect her from a threat that wasn't really there.
And we know this instability of her magic is why she was never let out of her mother's sight:
“—to permit her to leave the house?” cackled Muriel. “And yet she was never taken to St. Mungo’s and no Healer was ever summoned to see her!” “Really, Muriel, how can you possibly know whether—“ “For your information, Elphias, my cousin Lancelot was a Healer at St. Mungo’s at the time, and he told my family in strictest confidence that Ariana had never been seen there. All most suspicious, Lancelot thought!”
(DH, page 137)
because the Ministry had known what Ariana had become, she’d have been locked up in St. Mungo’s for good. They’d have seen her as a serious threat to the International Statute of Secrecy, unbalanced like she was, with magic exploding out of her at moments when she couldn’t keep it in any longer.
(DH, page 479)
They hid her from everyone. From Bathilda, any other neighbors, and from St. Mongos. And they were right to be concerned about what the ministry would do if they knew about Ariana. She was a danger to herself and the people around her, not because she meant to be. Because she was a young, traumatized witch whose magic kept trying to protect her when the threat was long gone.

Pandemic by eldritcher
Harry/Voldemort. Rated M. 260000 words.
Fest - @hprecfest. Day 14 - A favorite series.
Today's rec is an obvious choice! The first fic I recced :D
"...we, in our imperfections and desperate loneliness, crave to seek and hold and be held, as is the course of human things."
Pandemic is a fic about loneliness, hope and healing. Harry is so lonely during the pandemic and his depression creates an Obscurial.
This is a sweeping epic which shows the mental health and social tolls of the covid pandemic, takes us on a ride through 20th century history of Europe framing it in Wizarding history to underline that we still have the same human wants/needs.
Also a fic about destiny. Delphi's destiny! I have a lot of problems with CC but a big one is about how Voldemort's kid is evil like it's a DNA thing. Pandemic is a brilliant deconstruction of that trope. This is the best Delphi I have read. She is literally The Cursed Child in Job's Coffin. Job's Coffin is the name for the stars at the heart of the constellation of Delphinus "the Dolphin".
Four stars forming the shape of a coffin representing the four men who influenced Delphi (Harry, Voldemort, Dumbledore, Grindelwald).
Tumblr media
Just like how the sentient houses and castles in the Wizarding World are the coffin for the wizards/for magic. Also just like how you don't need magic to be in a coffin because sometimes families are coffins/house of blues like the Dursleys are for Harry.
This is not a story about coffins! This is a story about escaping them!
Tumblr media
Catullus 16, which I recced yesterday, uses a lot of One Thousand and One nights stories. Pandemic is literally the story behind the story. It's about Sultan and Scheherazade, about loving the unlovable, about being incredibly incredibly resourceful when you are hopeless. It's about breaking the power of Harry's Obscurial/the power of the Sultan's fears/breaking free from the coffin of loneliness :D Sorry went poetic! But it is a poetic fic!
Obviously this series is really deep and I suck at explaining. So I am going to skip that. I really love the characterizations.
Voldemort is somebody looking for a name/an identity his whole life because his birth identity gives him so much dysphoria. He is pretty selfish but also he loves his daughter. Delphi is incredibly happy/cheerful because he's literally using love magic to make her happy when a lot of tragedies happen. Lily used it to save Harry. The parallels are. Yeah. Fate's gonna go where it's gonna go and Voldemort doesn't want to accept that.
It's people and their loneliness. Dumbledore locked up Grindelwald. Snape is his own coffin. Always! Narcissa Malfoy doesn't really leave the dysfunctional Black family coffin. Harry is lonely because he doesn't want to give anybody a chance if they are not The One.
The finale is intense so you are going to be haunted forever. The ending is bittersweet. Harry and Voldemort are together, Delphi survives. Hawthorn will heal your heart after wrecking it first.
recs I made during this fest
lots of love for paddidi who help me a lot on the complicated recs yesterday and today <3

A Version Of Eileen's Life:
It must all begin from the beginning; 1931 to be precise. For four years, Aurelius Dumbledore (a.k.a “Credence Barebone”), had been working for the supreme Dark Wizard, Gellert Grindelwald. As an Obscurial who managed to live to adulthood, Aurelius was an extreme rarity in the Wizarding World. Unfortunately, because of the parasitic Obscurus, Aurelius’s life still waned. Naturally, Grindelwald knew this sad fact and needed a plan, an “heir” to his weapon.
While Grindelwald sent his numerous minions to find more Obscurials, the searches had proven to be futile for one reason or another. Eventually, Grindelwald began to come up with another idea; Obscurial or not, Aurelius was still the son of Aberforth. Thus, Aurelius was not just the last of the Dumbledore clan, but he was the nephew of Aberforth’s brother, Albus Dumbledore-Grindelwald’s main foe. Nothing could hurt Albus more than his own relative-present or future-joining Grindelwald. So it was decided, a new Dumbledore must come forth.
After much consideration, Grindelwald settled on the once-prestigious Prince family. It was said that Sacar Prince was a famous potioneer about two centuries ago. But, upon numerous competitors, betrayals and bad deals, Silvanus’s descendents struggled greatly. The latest of the lineage, Silvanus Prince and his wife, Melinoe Suspirio, was no different. Because of this, Grindelwald thought it easy to persuade the Princes’ to let their daughter, Eleousa, work for him.
In time, Aurelius and Eleousa would meet. Slowly, the two would become acquainted with each other. This was mainly due to their skills; Eleousa was impressed with Aurelius’s Obscurus, along with his romantic side. For Aurelius, he was impressed with Eleousa’s intellect, and her fascination with resurrecting the dead. Long story short, the two young wizards shared a passionate love for eachother. As a result, a baby was on the way.
Unfortunately, Aurelius would be completely unaware of his upcoming child. Shortly after a failed mission in Bhutan, Aurelius would reconcile with his father, Aberforth, and succumb to the Obscurus only a few days later.
Sometime later, little Eileen came into the world. Unfortunately, Eleousa would die not long after her daughter was born. As a result, Eileen would be raised by Silvanus and Melinoe as if she was their daughter. Even going by “Prince” rather than “Barebone” or “Dumbledore”.
As Eileen grew up, the Prince family would see her as a disappointment. Especially as Grindelwald would reach his final downfall. In spite of her cold environment, Eileen tried making the best of things. For instance, she was loyal to her Slytherin House, was skillful in gobstones, potion-making along with spell-casting. She would often try to form a connection with her late mother by researching spells for reviving the dead. However, by the time she turned 21, she felt something absent in her life. Then, when in the Muggle World, she met Tobias Snape…
As a rough-and-tumble Teddy Boy, Tobias Snape was part of a group known as “The Web-Spinners”. Another member was Tobias’s best friend “Severe Seymour”, along with Seymor’s girlfriend, Lydia. However, The Web-Spinners weren’t the only gangs in Cokeworth as they were fiercely rivaled by the “Sweet Deaths”. During one altercation, a naive Eileen was in the gauntlet and would’ve been killed had Tobias and Seymor not stepped in. Eventually, Tobias and Eileen hit it off.
Yet, while Eileen saw Tobias as a potential husband, Tobias saw Eileen as more of a “fling”. Disgusted, Seymour and Lydia often confronted Tobias about such a mindset. Urging him to either marry Eileen or break things off better the relationship gets even more serious. Events later took a turn when Tobias, Seymour and Lydia were at a pub-the same pub the Sweet Deaths were visiting. Thanks to his drunken boasting, Tobias had started a fight that escalated into a major catastrophe. In the end, Seymour and Lydia would be killed by the Sweet Deaths.
Remorseful and horrified, Tobias was at a loss on what to do next until he’d learn that Eileen was an witch. He begged her to bring back his lost friends but Eileen told him that resurrection isn’t what the Wizarding World does. So, Tobias made up his mind; he’ll marry her and, in turn, she’ll find a way to bring back the dead. Eileen knew not to make promises she couldn’t keep, but she could never say “No” to such a magical potential as reviving the deceased. So, in 1953, Tobias Snape and Eileen Prince would marry to the horror of the latter’s family. Silvanus and Melinoe would loathe their granddaughter for choosing a Muggle over her enchanted pure-blood; ultimately cutting her off altogether.
In time, Tobias would quit being a Teddy Boy, move himself and Eileen to the last house at Spinner’s End along with becoming the reluctant father to a raven-haired boy, Severus. Yet, alcoholism and fruitless job-hunting would take a toll over the years. With these factors and Eileen’s failed experiments, Tobias grew more aggressive than ever before. At the expense of her own son, Eileen kept hanging on until Tobias and Eileen would eventually face Death themselves. Leaving Severus in the cold.
Well...what do you think for a theory/headcanon?

SEVERUS SNAPE WIP:
@montrasity said:
i'm writing a severus snape centric fanfiction that's a canon divergence au which deals with severus snape as an obscurial (which was mostly stagnant throughout his earliest years because of the balance between his mother's love and his father's hatred) and it ends up manifesting during the start of his fifth year due to his mother's death (this will be the summer after the werewolf and SWM incidents (which were also main triggers in this awakening) which i pushed back to have happened in 4th instead of 5th year) and the story goes on from there.
It'll be a slytherin centric fic, with this as the character sheet:
5th years (who will later on become severus's best friends in the books):
edmund avery jr. - pureblood slytherin, suffers from a blood curse(basically leukemia for wizards)
bruce mulciber - pureblood slytherin, potential(?) love interest for severus, though i'm not set on it yet
william wilkes - half-blood slytherin, son to one of the most notorious original death eaters (although he tries to hide this by always being bubbly and happy)
aurora sinistra - pureblood ravenclaw, i read somewhere that she and severus were friends (since they were professors closest in age at hogwarts) and i decided to roll with it
charity burbage - muggleborn hufflepuff, headcannoned their friendship after the "please severus, we're friends" scene in the movies, becomes a sort of anchor for severus throughout the book, love interest with aurora
6th years (basically the mother hens of the 5th year squad, with their own diverging storylines):
narcissa black - pureblood slytherin, severus's confidant
belladonna zabini - pureblood slytherin, heiress to the contessa of magical italy (honestly she's such a badass and we only got like one line about her character), best friends with narcissa
7th years ( also the mother hens of the 5th year squad )
lucius malfoy - pureblood slytherin, severus's pseudo father figure given who his actual father is
rupert dolohov - pureblood slytherin, the happy go lucky uncle who drinks all his problems away
andromeda black - pureblood slytherin, following her journey of breaking her family ties while keeping those she loves close
4th years (who all kind of admire severus):
regulus black - pureblood slytherin, sees severus as a brother figure due to his enstranged relationship with sirius
evan rosier - pureblood slytherin, best friends with regulus
barty crouch jr. - pureblood ravenclaw, disappointment to his father for not making it into slytherin
dorcas meadows - half-blood ravenclaw, skilled duelist due to being tutored by severus in her second year
pandora clément(lovegood) - pureblood ravenclaw, was tutored in potions by severus
1st years (who basically become severus's adopted children):
michael richards ( original character ) - muggleborn hufflepuff, a newly turned werewolf who lives in cokeworth, bitten a month after he gets his hogwarts letter
sybil trelawney - half-blood ravenclaw, seer (i know that she's probably older or closer in age with severus, but i liked the image of a fiesty 11 year old girl telling off a 15 year old severus because she's a seer and knows when he's lying lol)
other prominent characters:
petunia evans - muggle, because i think that her character is far too complex to be left at 'muggle sister who hates magic'
gavin richards ( original character )- muggle, brother to michael, potential love interest for petunia
albus dumbledore - being the manipulative cunt that he is
voldemort - also being an A class manipulative cunt
alastor moody - head auror, part of the order
caradoc dearbone - master potioneer, vampire, part of the order
the marauders - i honestly didn't even want them in the story, but they're necessary for the later years that they join the order and their time at hogwarts after severus's awakening
lily evans - becuase i need a good angsty scene where severus and her have a heart to heart and he decides to end their friendship for the good of both of them
BASICALLY, all that razzle dazzle was for me to just ask the question of whether or not i'm doing too much with the story or whether or not the storylines don't match up or if it's confusing or if you'd read it? I just need some thoughts and opinions if you don't mind!

My response:
All of this sounds amazing @montrasity! I don’t think you’re doing too much, and even then; the work you’re putting into what I’m sure will turn out to be an incredible fanfic is extremely admirable. I think the storylines match up, and I’m very excited to see/read about the characters you’ve mentioned. I really enjoy the idea of Severus being an obscurial and I’m glad you will be including that in your fanfic. I think it’s worth mentioning that @ottogatto made an excellent post about the theory and providing the evidence for it: Here.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! And could you please inform me when you publish this fanfic? I’d really, really love to read it. Thank you very much for the submission, have a lovely day!
[Also, I apologise if I did something wrong, I’m still getting used to submissions. 😅]

Snape being the obscurial in Grindelwald's vision would explain why he was so emotionally unbalanced. He probably practiced occlumency H24 to hold back that "thing" inside him. I like to imagine that him, Credence and Ariana were three different exemples of coping mechanism. One was traumatized for life and died very young, another tried to learn how to take advantage of it and the last one supressed it very hard but managed to survive thanks to his ability to clean his mind so easily and thanks to his loyalty towards Lily and Dumbledore.
Neither of them healed though.
I think healing from an obscurus would depend on three things :
- The trauma itself : Child abuse or isolated incident ? Was it too big to be eased ?
- The host : their sensitivity, their inner strenght and magical ability.
- The support system : How many people loved them sincerely ? Did they live in a healthy environment even if they had one person to give them a bit of affection ? (in Snape's case). Did the support system intervene early or too late ?
Anyway Ariana's case is a proof that just ONE incident can make a child supress their magic and create an obscurus that would never go away.
Even If Tobias would have abused his child just once it would not be impossible for little Snape to supress his magic so hard that it would create an obscurus. And once it's there... it's there and you can't get ride of it.
Credence's case is a proof that you can control your obscurial and even learn magic if you have a good teacher (Grindelwald). He's also a proof that Nagini's presence and influence in his life was too short to heal him.
I have also noted that what drove Credence to control his obscurial is his anger and pain. As Grindelwald said "His pain is his power".
Snape was a wizard who in his early life was driven by hope and his thirst for power. What made him want to be respected and feared was his past and trauma. That's why i don't find his reaction in the first lines of "The Prince's Tale" chapter too odd and actually it would be coherent with the headcanon that he could be an obscurial. Snape was apparently not socialized due to Tobias' abuse. The poor child seemed to be in quarantine and was so desperate to have a wizard as a friend. Hogwarts was the light at the end of the tunnel and he thought that he would finally been accepted and loved for what he was : A wizard.
Sadly, we all know how it ended and Snape never had the opportunity to heal in a healthy environment...

What if Ariel was an obscurial? What would his relationship with Snape be like?
I imagine her entering Hogwarts very fearful without knowing how to use her magic without going against it and with the fear of hurting others Most likely, Severus will be very angry at how the girl was treated, so much so that he will want to kill Petunia and Bernon for how they treated her.
As for Dumbledore, it would remind him a lot of Ariana and how he didn't protect her, making sure he didn't make the same mistakes with Ariel.
me, muttering under my breath as I open up google: what the fuck is an obscurial?
oh oh OH now I know - sorry, this threw me for a loop, I haven’t watched any of the new fantastic beasts movies since the very first one came out. I completely forgot about credence and what he was, so this is actually an interesting question. obviously if it were the case, petunia and vernon would’ve had to have told ariel about her magic at some point and then tried to suppress it because harry’s ignorance is what saved him for that fate.
I think snape would’ve tried to kill them, probably, and dumbledore wouldn’t have liked it but - and I guess you can disagree on this based on how awful of a person you think dumbledore is - but I don’t think he’d send Ariel back to the Dursleys if they’d make her an Obscurial. Snape would’ve been waaay more accepting of the kid and it would’ve been very rocky but he would’ve actually tried from the get go because of how unstable the situation is. yeah, idk a better story with snape actually being a decent person but not as a strong of a character in regards to ariel. way more fearful and hesitant, probably wouldn’t have ended up in gryffindor.
