"Rafe" Score Analysis

There's so much we can learn about Rafe through his song on the obx soundtrack. It really is a window into his mind and body and I think it's so interesting and underrated, so I decided to break it down for anyone that might care lol >>

The first 55 seconds are very anticipatory. The music is very shaky and unstable, and it seems like it's on the verge of breaking. It shows so well how Rafe feels when he begins to get angry- out of control, red slowly seeping into his vision.

Around 0:55, we hear this sliding dissonance come in that's so ugly. It really shows a shift in Rafe's mental state. He goes from on edge and frantic to pure, unadulterated and quite scary anger. The strings become less shaky and more purposeful. High and screeching, coupled with the dark and brooding sound underneath. We flip-flop between the two and it's sensory overload, showing how Rafe can get caught up in the battle within his mind. Going back and forth between his head and his heart, nearly all consumed with psychotic rage.

Then we get this awful dissonance again around 1:50 that you can't help but love, which leads into a break at 2:05. This is what I like to think is his snap. Rafe's anger takes over and he's seeing red.

From 2:05 to 3:10, we're fully experiencing these emotions with Rafe. The music transports us into his body and I feel like this section is his actions, when he's doing something so against his conscience it would rip a normal person apart.

The breathing: adrenaline through his veins, his breath quickening

The drums: his heart beat is pounding, loud and irregular

The slides: Rafe's ears ringing

The rhythm of the melody: His muscles jerking and tensing suddenly as he sees red

The pitches: both the melody and bass notes gradually step up a scale. This shows how his emotions continue to ramp up and take over.

Then we have Rafe post-action, from around 3:10-3:59. This is when the weight of what he's done seeps in. The dissonance creates a sense of anxiety that Rafe is feeling as he tries to rationalize what just happened and figure out how to cover it up. It's so oddly sad, like he might be feeling almost a sense of regret for a second?

But then at 4:05 a dark brooding sound seeps back in and we know he's made the decision to go further down this psychotic path. It ends with these super ugly, discordant pitches that leave us knowing that something bad is going to happen. It's very unpredictable and anxiety inducing.

I'm definitely not a professional but those are just things I personally heard and how I interpret them to better understand how scary of a character Rafe really is haha. I'd love to hear you guys' thoughts!!

John B wasn’t entirely sure how long the two of you had been lounging on the couch. At some point in the afternoon he was positive that he’d fallen asleep. It’d been raining since you got there and it was still raining when he came to, spread across the couch with his head on your lap. You were reading and he couldn’t remember if you’d been reading the whole time or just since he’d fallen asleep but you didn’t acknowledge that he was awake now. Not that he really expected you to. 

John B knew you well enough to know that when you found a book you really liked it was as if you were in a bubble. Every distraction just seemed to bounce off of you and you were completely engrossed. It used to bug him a little bit, when you were first dating and he mistook your interest in a book for a disinterest in him.  

It’d been almost a year though and he saw it for what it was now. A comfortableness that couldn’t quite be matched in anyone else. You weren’t avoiding him, you were letting him a further in, letting him see the way a book could grab you. In turn, he let you see the way he was when he didn’t have to be quite so ‘on’ for his friends. When it was just the two of you and no expectations and both of you could relax like this, lounging on the couch and listening to the rain and he could feel your fingers card through his hair every once in a while.  

“We should get married,” he finally said, turning so he was on his back and he could look up at you. It was the first thing he’d said in a matter of hours and honestly, he didn’t expect you to hear him at all. He’d had whole conversations with people while you were reading and you never seemed to absorb any of them. This, he figured, would be no different. An offhand comment, while he was still groggy and just waking up, the rain the only soundtrack to the afternoon.  

But he felt the way you tensed, saw the slight curl of your fingers around the edges of the book as you processed his words, as they broke through the haze that reading caused. He watched you push your glasses up your nose and then slowly, the book closed on your forefinger and you looked down at him, your face a blank expression.  

“What?” You sounded unsure, as if you’d imagined the whole thing and you expected to look down and find him still sleeping.  

“We should get married. I mean, not right now, but we should.” He mused, taking one of your free hands after you put your book down on the arm of the couch. He pulled a loose thread from the end of his t-shirt and wrapped it around your ring finger, “there you go.”

“I didn’t say yes yet.” You teased, bring his hand up to place a kiss against his knuckles. “I think that has to happen first.”

He shrugged, “okay, say yes then.”

“John B,” your voice was soft as you ran your thumb along the back of his hand and used your other hand to cradle his head. “Don’t you think this is all a little impulsive?”

“Is that a no?” He asked, somewhat amused. If he’d thought that no was even a possibility, he wouldn’t have tried breeching the subject in the first place.  

“No,” you shook your head, “it’s a yes.”  

He hummed and closed his eyes at the feeling of your fingers in his hair, “okay, you can go back to reading. That’s all I wanted.”

“That was it?” You laughed quietly, taking the book up once more but not opening it yet.  

“Well,” he thought about it for a second before smiling, “I wouldn’t mind a kiss.”

Im back with more insanity. I've been listening to the obx official spotify soundtrack, the newly added s3 ones specifically. (Which like- i'll shoot my foot if they arent the season 3 songs-) I love music so much in regards to characters and stories and i- The feel and overall topic of these songs for s3 compared to s2 and s1 is so much more islandy and summer teenage adventures (more like s1 but more heavy- idk if that makes sense-) ANNDDDD The overall topic/vibes of the songs IS LOVE! So I’m watching obx bc I can’t sleep, and that song I was telling you about the other day is apparently in an episode lol

what was it again, omg, Texas sun, something like that? anyway if it is, it has to be amazing, the obx soundtrack is wonderful! I remember that one scene where they were being chased by that old lady and, just by watching, you're supposed to be all tense because they're getting shot at but the music is like "don't worry! it's all fun and games!"

okay now that i’ve gone through the entire obx3 soundtrack i can safely say that it’s my favorite of the series so far like THE RANGE?????

there’s truly something for everyone, there’s the classic obx kind of high energy rock stuff, the more chill beachy stuff, the usual folky stuff, some incredible reggae and south american influences that fit perfectly with all the different locations in this season, and even more genres than that. it’s such a great mix of old obx sounds and new obx sounds, highly recommend checking it out!!

Running, all he did was running. All he could do was running. Running in circles like a panther in a cage.

And he was in a cage. No, they didn’t like it when you called it that. Nor when you called it a prison. But they didn’t like it when you wanted to get out either.

At least they let him outside now, allowed him to run around the prison yard – sorry, the park. They didn’t like it when he left the path though. Didn’t like it when he got too close to the walls. The walls that were caging him in – or “protecting him from the influence of the outside world”, as they said.

Rafe hated being in a confined space. He hated not being able to go where he wanted to go. To do what he wanted to do. He hated all that bullshit activities and therapy sessions they forced him to attend. He hated that there was literally nothing to do in the time in between them. Except running. Running in circles.

He knew there was a kind of gym that some inmates earned the privilege to use. They had a key that would let them into that room where they could use equipment to work out. Unsupervised. Not him though. No one trusted him with a key. And he sure didn’t like the concept that you had to earn such a privilege.

He’d been in here, in this institution for quite some time. He literally couldn’t tell for how long and that was probably the worst part of it all. Time didn’t really work the way it worked outside. Oh, but time was important in here. Extremely important. Everything ran according to a schedule. A very precise schedule that allowed no deviations, because somehow a tight schedule was the most important thing for recovery, getting back on track or whatever they called it. Yeah, well he stayed on the fucking track right now and hated it. He hadn’t earned the privilege to use any electronic device unsupervised, so no airpods for him. No music while running. The only soundtrack being the thud-thud-thud of his sneakers on the gravel path.

He felt the first drops of rain on his face, but he wasn’t ready to get inside. He didn’t mind the rain anyway. The rain was different here, wherever here was, different from rain in the obx.

Not knowing where he was, was also fucking messed up.

The first days after he had arrived were a blur. He had been heavily sedated and kept under surveillance. Apparently he had been a menace to himself and everyone else. He sure still was. But with all the pills they gave him, they trusted he was too dazed most of the time to be a menace any longer. Yet, they still didn’t trust him with that damn gym key.

He actually never had a problem with taking any pills offered, but the meds they gave him just fucked him up. Not that he had a say in whether to take them or not. Not that he had a say in anything since he had been here. He fucking hated it here.

He didn’t have a watch – apparently that was considered a weapon or just a too personal item and he hadn’t earned the privilege yet to have any of those – but he always knew exactly what time it was. Because everything was always following that damn schedule: getting up at 6.30, nurse measuring his blood pressure at 7.00, breakfast at 7.30, afterwards meds, 9.00 a bunch of doctors taking about three minutes tops to examine and diagnose him and prescribe new meds, 10.00 some stupid crafts therapy, 11.30 meditation, 12.00 lunch and more pills, 14.00 group therapy, 16.00 more crafts therapy, 18.00 dinner, 19.30 movie or games, 21.30 more pills, 22.00 lights out. And in between lots of time to kill. And nothing to do but running in circles.

As if this structured schedule would make what was going on in his head any better. It just made every day the fucking same, and all those faces looked the same. The doctors with their frowns, the nurses with their fake smiles, the other inmates with their dead eyes. Everything and everyone moved so slowly, that was why he had started running, running faster now, just in the small prison yard. No, this wasn’t prison. It was a sheltered place to get healthy – so you could face trial and then go to prison.

He passed redhead for the third time now and for the second time she made eye contact. Outside he’d suspected she was trying to hit on him. In here, she was probably trying to kill him. Either way, he knew that she was one of the privileged ones. She had the key to the gym. He had seen her going into the room the other day. So the next time when he was running to pass her, he slowed down.

His hand ran through his hair, damp from the light rain and from his own sweat. He was panting, his chest heaving, the white shirt clinging to his muscular torso. He put both his hands into the pockets of his grey sweatpants as he walked up to her.

“Hey, redhead. You got the keys to the gym, right?”

Even before he never was one for chitchat, but preferred to cut all that shit and come right to the point. In here with all those crazy heads you had to express as clearly as possible what you wanted, and if you were lucky, they weren’t too high on meds and would understand you to some extent.
