At long last, here it is: Go For Broke, the Kantoph POW AU based on an astonishing true story.
@twinkle-toph @stitch1830 @thebansheeandherboy @legendofnora @moonxkitsune, this one is for you. Thank you, so much, for your patience with my slow writing pace and encouragement while writing this. I love you guys. Creating the Kantoph ship practically from nothing has been one of my all-time favorite things in fandom. So just...thank you.
Title: Go For Broke
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Characters: Toph Beifong, Kanto, Lin Beifong, Jian Beifong (OC), Jiahao (OC), Zuko, Azula, Aang, Sokka, Original Characters
Tags: Toph Beifong/Kanto, Toph Beifong & Katara, Sokka & Kanto, Based on a True Story, Angst, Angst with a Happy Ending, Mild Hurt/Comfort, Military, Alternate Universe - Historical, Korean War AU (sort of)
Summary:
[This is it, he thinks. The soldier’s minute.
He’s heard about it. One minute, to decide everything. One minute, to change the battle. To change your life. One minute, to win or lose. That’s all you got - you never knew when, but when it appeared, you’d know.
This, he realizes, is his one minute.
“Hold,” he orders one last time. His heart thuds in his chest - once, twice, three times. Silhouettes appear over the hill in front of them, shuffling - no, running towards them. He can just barely make out the pins on the right side of their chest. Lotus flowers. Red, he knows. They’re dark red. Just a few more feet…
“Light ‘em up!”]
------
Thousands of miles from home, Kanto makes his choice. The one that every soldier has to make at some point - stay, or go?
(Stay, he'll answer. Because someone has to. Because he has to.)
Hopefully, one day, he'll see his family again.
Maybe, one day, they'll forgive him.
------
Based on the true story of Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura, Sergeant (Ret.) United States Army, recipient of the Medal of Honor.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night
This was sitting in my WIPs, and I thought I'd finish the Kantoph word vomit. Hope you enjoy it still, haha!
......
“Hold still while I do your hair, Lin.”
The three-year-old tried to comply with her mother’s request, but she was simply too excited. She had been looking forward to this day for far too long, and she was ready for the night to begin. A whole night spent with her father was everything Lin wanted and more, especially since there was the promise of dancing.
Toph could tell Lin was antsy with excitement by the way she quietly squirmed in her seat. Still, her daughter’s hair wasn’t going to do itself. “You know, if you keep wiggling around in your spot, your hair will be all lopsided,” she teased.
“But I’m excited Mama!”
The earthbender laughed, “Yes, I know. It’s all you’ve talked about for the past month!”
Lin turned her head to Toph, ignoring the cries of annoyance. “Mama, is Baba ready?”
“Yeah, baby girl. He’s getting ready, like you should be, but you said you can only get dressed when your hair is done.”
“Mama, I want my dress to be a surprise! You have to do my hair first.”
Toph playfully scoffed at Lin’s logic as she straightened Lin’s head and prompted it to still. “Well, don’t mess up my awesome handiwork when you get dressed, got it?”
“Never,” she promised.
Toph gave a small nod to Lin and got back to work. She focused on the feel and approximate thickness of each strand of hair she held, and carefully checked and rechecked the straightness of Lin’s hairdo and she put it up. Normally, this wasn’t a task Toph would find herself doing for Lin, but her daughter insisted that she do it. And Toph wasn’t one to say no to her Little Badgermole. Luckily, there wasn’t more that needed to be done, and before long, Lin’s hairdo was complete.
“There,” Toph said, wiping her hands together. “How’s that?”
By the way Lin’s heart rate increased even more, Toph took that as a sign of approval and grinned. That, and the platypus bear hug Lin gave her not a second later.
“I love it Mama, thank you!”
“Anytime, kiddo,” Toph replied with a quiet chuckle. “Now, do you need Baba to help you with your dress?”
“No, no, Nai Nai showed me how!”
Before Toph could ask any more questions, Lin bolted out of the bathroom and went to her room to change. Spirits, that kid had energy for days.
Toph gently stretched out her back and arms, letting out a relieved sigh when she was done, then went back to the bedroom. She didn’t bother knocking, either. If he wasn’t ready yet then he was going to be in some deep shit with their kid.
She opened her bedroom door to the sounds of Kanto cooing to their baby like a weirdo.
“Are you Baba’s buddy? Yeah? Yeah? Say it with me, bud. Baba’s buddy.”
“You’re a dork,” Toph replied for him.
Kanto turned to Toph. “Says the woman that married me. What happened to you being single forever?”
“You knocked me up. Twice.” Toph smirked at Kanto and made her way to his side. She reached out and ran her hand down his arm. “You’re all dressed, right? Lin’s gonna throw a fit if—”
“I’ve got it covered, Chief,” he interrupted, placing a quick kiss on her forehead. “Jian and I have just been chatting. You know. Man to man.”
Toph raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? What kind of manly things?”
“Just how he’s gotta be the man of the house and take care of you when I’m gone. You know, the usual stuff.”
“Good idea, I’ll let our infant take care of any gangsters that threaten us.”
“Our kid’s tough. He can handle it.”
Despite her intention to playfully scold him, Toph smiled and placed her hand in his. He rubbed soothing circles on the back of her hand as he asked, “You going to be okay here alone?”
“I thought Jian was gonna take care of me,” she teased.
“He is, but still. I just hate leaving—”
“Hey,” she interrupted, wrapping her arm around his waist. Toph pointed her face up to him and said, “It’s only a few hours, go have fun with Lin! She’s been dying to spend some quality time with you. We’ll be fine.”
The reassuring words seemed to work, because Kanto’s heart calmed and his hand lightly rubbed Toph’s back in gratitude. Toph cut the sweet moment short by saying, “Alright, you better hand me the spit monster before he messes up your robes.”
Kanto chuckled. “Aye aye, Chief. Do you want the carrier?”
She nodded, and the two worked together to get the baby settled comfortably on Toph’s chest. Once Jian was secure and content in the carrier, Kanto gently rubbed his head and kissed the top of it. “We should put his hat on.”
“Why? This kid is like a furnace, and it’s the middle of summer! Jian’s gonna be fine.”
“I just don’t want him to be cold you know?”
His concerned voice made Toph’s heart skip a beat. The way he cared so much about the children and Toph… she didn’t know how she ended up so lucky.
To placate his worries, Toph offered, “How about I keep it with me, and if he gets fussy and cold, I’ll put it on.” When she felt him calm down again, she smiled.
Toph put her hand out so he could give her the hat, and when she tucked it into her pocket, she reached out for Kanto again and found the collar of his robes, getting a feel for the fabric. There were many layers to a formal outfit, and she could imagine that it was very toasty in them, but also that he probably looked rather handsome. They were a gift from her parents, and she knew they were made of the finest materials. “So, how hot do you look in your getup?” she asked with a smirk.
“Hot enough for it to be taken off,” he replied immediately.
“Okay, settle down, Hotshot,” she laughed as she pushed his chest away from her. He grabbed her hand before she could escape and teased, “Hey! You asked!” Kanto pulled in Toph for a kiss before he let her go. “Okay, I’m going to check on the little lady, you two wait here.”
Kanto left the room before she could give a retort, so Toph and Jian waited. She kissed the top of his little head, and he calmly squirmed against her chest. “Well, buddy, it’s gonna be you and me, tonight. Any suggestions on what we should do?”
The baby said nothing like she expected. Jian was a baby of few exclamations at the moment, which was a nice change of pace compared to Lin. So, Toph silently rubbed his back and paced the bedroom floor, waiting for the 'okay' to come out of the room.
After another minute, she heard Kanto call out for them, and Toph wasted no time to exit the room.
“Mama, come look at my dress!” Lin yelled.
Toph quietly chuckled as she approached the duo and slowly crouched down to Lin’s level. She set out her free hand and asked, “Can you show me?”
Lin placed the hem of the dress in Toph’s hand. She rolled the fabric between her fingers, marveling at the texture as Kanto had Lin explain the design.
“Lin, tell Mama what’s on your dress.”
“Flowers!”
Toph playfully gasped, and Lin continued, “It has marigolds on it. And a Nai Nai flower.”
“Of course Nai Nai picked a dress with poppies on it,” Toph teased. When she finished feeling the texture of the fabric, Toph moved her hand to Lin’s face and gently rubbed her cheek. “I bet you look beautiful, Little Badgermole.”
“She does,” Kanto replied. “And she’s gonna have the best dance moves while she dances with Baba.”
“Yeah!”
“Should we show Mama some moves before we go?”
“Yeah!”
Lin hopped to her feet and raised her hands so Kanto could grab them. The two danced to their own beat and swayed and made up a melody while they danced for Toph. The whole family began to laugh when Kanto lifted Lin up so her feet were on top of Kanto’s, and she giggled as they jumped around the hall together.
And as much as Toph wanted to keep observing their antics, if Lin and Kanto didn’t leave soon, they’d be late. “Alright, you better save some dancing for the actual event. You can show me all your dance moves when you get back.”
The suggestion seemed acceptable to the three-year-old, for she cheered and got off her father’s feet and went to hug Toph before leaving.
“Bye, Mama! Love you.”
“Love you too, baby girl, and say bye to your brother.” Toph turned so Lin could see Jian, and the little girl left a tiny kiss on his head.
With a helping hand from Kanto, Toph stood up and kissed him. Afterwards, Kanto smiled into Toph's cheek, then said, “Have fun with the little man, and there’s steak in the kitchen for you.”
And after a handful more goodbyes, Kanto and Lin were out the door. Toph observed their figures as they made their way to the venue, smiling when Lin started to skip to keep up. Finally, though, she let out a sigh of relief and turned her attention to the baby still snug against her chest. “Well, kid. It’s finally quiet. I don’t know about you, but I’m starving!”
Jian made a little whine and moved slightly, and Toph teased him as she rubbed his back. “Yeah, I know. Too little to have steak right now. Soon enough, my little carnivore. But for now, enjoy the quiet time.” She kissed the top of his head, then made their way to the kitchen, fully ready for some quality mother/son time doing absolutely nothing.

Hola Stitch, my favorite little blue alien, you! 💙
I’m feeling for Aunt Zutara (and uncle Zuko) HCs for the Kantoph babies (metal babies?).
I just love Toph and Katara’s sisterhood friendship and would love to know how these two would support each other through motherhood. And what are your thoughts about it.
Hope you’re having a lovely day!
YES YES OKAY ZUTARA WITH METALBABIES :D These ideas have been living in my mind rent free for a little bit and I’m so glad you asked :’)
To start, I see Katara and Zuko having two girls (Kya and Izumi) in this AU, and then Toph and Kanto have a girl and a boy (Lin and Jian).
Zuko absolutely loves spending time with Lin, and then Lin with his girls is just added fun! They’re all energetic and adorable and for the most part, Lin is basically a carbon copy of Toph and Zuko thinks it’s so fun to see a mini Toph running around. He spoils the girls to no end, and whenever he’s with Lin, he always gives her a piece of chocolate or something.
Lin likes to pretend that she’s much bigger and older than she actually is, so she likes having tea with Uncle Zuko and ‘play’ Pai Sho, even though she mainly just organizes the pieces into pretty patterns on the board.
Perhaps Lin loves animals, and so whenever the Beifong’s visit the Fire Nation, Zuko has a new stuffed animal waiting for her, and they always spend a day feeding the turtle ducks. And whenever Zuko carries her around the palace, she just has a list of facts for whatever animal she’s obsessed with for that week.
He loves spending time with Jian, too, especially because Jian is a firebender (Kanto has some FN blood in him, but it was still a surprise when Jian sneezed a little fireball for the first time). When Jian’s older, Zuko teaches him a few moves, but as a baby/young boy, Jian prefers the company of his mother or his aunt, so he usually ends up conceding and giving his attentions to his daughters and niece.
Katara, while she loves all her nieces and nephews immensely, has a very soft spot for Jian.
He’s very giggly to start, and his smile and laugh are absolutely infectious. He loves smelling flowers despite his allergies, but his sneezes are really cute so it’s not that big of a deal lol. When he’s older, he likes to pick flowers for his Auntie. In general though, he loves giving his Aunt Katara things to hold or to share when they play. Flowers, dirt, stuffed animals, wrappers, bracelets, etc. Whatever he picks up, he likes to give to his aunt (some items are not so cute, but his smile makes it really hard to be mad at him LOL).
I feel like he shows his affection a lot through touch because Toph shows her affection that way, so whenever Katara carries him around, he keeps a hand on her cheek.
Kanto is very big on putting his kids in footie pajamas (much to Toph’s dismay), and Katara fully supports his mission, so she always buys new footie pajamas for them every time she sees them!
Jian is a great listener, too, so when Katara holds him and chats with him, he just snuggles his face against her neck, hand on her cheek, and giggles or smiles every now and then.
But when he sees his mama, he points to her and gets all excited and yells and everything and Katara just smiles and goes, “Yeah, buddy! That’s your mama!”
Katara absolutely loves seeing it, she gets a sneak peek at the joy on both Jian and Toph’s faces, and she definitely enjoys the moment.
Okay and then the final bit about Toph and Katara being best friends and going through motherhood with one another and supporting each other? A favorite thought in any AU. Toph and Katara are just amazing friends and it’s a given that they visit one another all the time (I also like to HC that Katara delivers the metalbabies, or just Toph’s babies in any AU haha). I think for Toph, being able to interact with Katara’s kids before having kids of her own gave her confidence and a bit of reassurance when she did become a mother, and with Katara, I think she really admires how well Toph adjusted to the change. I can see Katara being a little concerned at first, but then there was a moment where she saw Toph interact with the steambabies or Toph’s own babies, and she saw how much Toph cared for them that Katara knew in that instant that Toph was going to be a great mom.
Okay I think I gushed long enough, but really, I just… I love these ideas so much and I’m trying to write fics for them because my heart and soul need it. Anyway, thanks for indulging my zutara/kantoph fluff needs! This was absolutely perfect and they deserve all the fluffy moments. Hope you have a great day Nanu!!! :D
……
Send me asks about ATLA, or anything, really! :D

Big Sister
I felt like writing some Kantoph fluff, so here you go :)
......
“Lin, c’mere.”
The two-year-old wasn’t keen on listening to her father at the moment because she was too busy playing with her stuffed animals. But Kanto scooped up his baby girl in his arms and blew raspberries in her belly until she conceded. They were in fits of giggles when they sat on the couch next to Toph. The Greatest Earthbender in the World only playfully shook her head at their antics, but placed her hand on Kanto’s knee, signaling for them to begin.
Once Lin was settled on Kanto’s lap and he had a decent grip on her wiggling form, Kanto spoke again. “Linny, Mama and I want to talk to you about something, and then we can go back to playing, okay?”
Lin nodded and gave Kanto a great big smile.
“You know how Kya is a big sister to Izumi?” Kanto asked.
“Yeah!”
“And how Gyatso and Sari are siblings?”
“Yeah!”
“And you know how much fun they have as siblings? How they always have each other’s backs no matter what?”
“That might be over her head, Hotshot,” Toph muttered.
“Shush, I’m painting a pretty picture for her.”
“Sure you are.”
Kanto grinned and held Toph’s hand. And when he turned to Lin again, he continued, “How would you feel if you could be a big sister, Lin? To have a sibling of your own?”
Lin tilted her head to the side. “How?”
“Well, Mama is going to have a baby, and they’re going to be your baby sibling! Isn’t that exciting?”
“A baby sissy?” Lin asked.
“It could be a baby brother or a baby sister,” Kanto replied. “What do you think of that?”
“Why a baby?”
“An oops moment,” Toph mumbled, smirking.
“You can’t call our baby ‘oops’ like that,” Kanto muttered back to Toph, then redirected his attention back to Lin. “Well, Mama and Baba love each other, and we wanted our family to grow, and we thought that you would just be the bestest big sister in the world, so that’s why we’re having another baby.”
Lin said nothing for a moment as she apparently comprehended the news. “When do I get a baby.”
Kanto laughed at his daughter’s semantics, then replied, “It will be a few months before your baby sibling arrives, so we have some time to prepare.”
“Am I not your baby anymore?”
Toph clicked her tongue and pulled Lin into her lap. “Of course not, baby girl. You’ll always be our baby girl. We’re only having another baby because like Baba said, we love each other and decided to grow our family, that’s all.”
“Yeah, Linny. And we know you’re gonna be the best big sister ever,” Kanto added. “We’ll love you and your baby sibling just the same.”
Lin sat in Toph’s lap, silent. The two parents put on a casual front, but they were quietly nervous about her reaction. Babies change things, and while Toph and Kanto were excited, they worried that Lin may not care for the newest addition as much as they did. So they sat there, watching and listening for tells that told them whether or not she was happy or mad about the news.
After what felt like years, Kanto asked Lin, “What do you think about being a big sister, Lin? How do you feel?”
The toddler blinked, likely out of confusion on the question or because she was in her own world. Whatever the case, she flashed a big, toothy grin after a minute, then patted Toph’s belly. “I love you, baby oops!”
Toph and Kanto burst into fits of laughter, because of course she picked up the one thing they hoped went over her head. But after that, what choice did they have but to call their future baby Beifong “Oops”? It was a little too perfect (and too adorable when they heard it from Lin).
Kanto grinned at Toph. “That’s gonna stick, isn’t it?”
When she calmed down, Toph smiled back at Kanto. “You know it,” she replied, fighting back another round of giggles.
“This is gonna be fun,” he commented, pulling Toph and Lin into his long arms. And after he gave Toph a loving kiss on the lips, Toph couldn’t help but quietly agree with her husband.

Note
So I’ve been thinking that maybe when Lin was around one and a half or two, Toph suffered a miscarriage. It was very early into the pregnancy, they had only very recently found out, but it was traumatic for both her and Kanto and it took them a while to get over it. So then when she finds out she’s pregnant again (with best boy Jian haha) a year or two later they both kind of freak out, and they’re both super anxious throughout the whole pregnancy. While she was pregnant with Lin, Toph was comfortable with bending the rules a little and doing things that maybe she shouldn’t have been doing (behind Kanto’s back of course, that man is much, much, too overprotective), but this time? Shes paranoid, so she actually does try to stay healthy as possible and rest more. They don’t really stop being anxious until he’s born healthy.
PLEASE.
Okay the timeline is also very interesting.
So like, if they got pregnant again when Lin was like 6 months old, I can see them being surprised again, but excited. Super excited. Even though two little babies under 2 would be a handful, they love this phase with Lin.
But then Toph has a miscarriage and they’re just devastated. They feel like it was their fault or that they could’ve done something different to change the outcome.
It takes time but they learn to move on, but it still hurts. Then like you said, when she’s pregnant again (still feel like this pregnancy is a surprise haha), she’s super nervous. And so is Kanto, but he’s tries to be the calm voice for the both of them.
I can imagine this pregnancy being the opposite of Lin’s. Still a lot of love and cuddles and comfort, but it’s harder mentally, perhaps more complicated? A lot of factors play into their apprehension. Maybe he was early and a more difficult birth? So when he’s finally in their arms, it’s tears of relief and happiness. They’re so relieved.
This would be a very interesting scenario, and considering how the Beifong family probably has trouble with pregnancy complications and fertility (looking at Lao and Poppy HC’s), then a miscarriage in between Lin and Jian would make sense. Consider me hooked. 0-0
