Once the excitement dies down, Helen slips off towards the stables.
It’s an old habit of hers, one that goes all the way back to when she was a child, hiding in her foster father’s stables and waiting for the panic choking her to subside. Even now, years later with the chaos of the day hanging over her head, Helen is only able to breathe once she sinks her fingers into Whiskey’s mane.
The stables are quiet this time of night; if they aren’t on duty, most knights are lounging about the courtyard enjoying their rare free time. If she listens hard enough, Helen can hear their voices floating on the air. Usually she’d go out and join them, but right now she’s content to sit in the dark and let the gentle sounds of the horses moving about in their stalls calm her nerves.
She’s supposed to head out tomorrow morning, according to Muriel. Helen’s been waiting for this moment ever since she first joined the palace guard; she even has a bag already packed and stored safely under her cot, ready to go. And yet Helen can’t help but feel a low sense of panic humming under her skin at the thought of the quest. There’s so much hanging on this. What if she doesn’t succeed?
Helen is so focused on running her fingers through Whiskey’s mane that she doesn’t hear the creaking of the stable door opening. She does, however, see the shadows move across the wall as someone slips inside.
Now, logically Helen knows that it’s someone from the palace, but she’s been on edge all evening. Instinct pushes her to move without thinking. Jumping in front of Whiskey, she throws one arm out in front of the horse and the other resting on the sword hanging at her hip. Whiskey didn’t react, too engrossed with the food in front of him to realize what was going on.
“Helen?” A familiar voice calls out from the shadows. “Are you in here?”
Helen’s shoulders slump, and she leans back heavily against Whiskey’s flank. Whiskey nudges her shoulder gently before returning to his food. “Don’t scare me like that,” she says.
Cory steps out of the shadows, a grin dancing on her face. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”
The sight of Cory is enough to dissipate the tension that has been coiled around Helen’s spine ever since the prince had returned to the palace with one foot in the grave. She looks exactly the same as she did this morning when Helen ran into her: light hair pushed back from her forehead, spade shoved in her pocket, a streak of dirt across her cheek. Helen has never been more thrilled to see anyone in her life.
“What are you doing here?” Helen asks, lips twitching up in a small smile.
“Thought you might be in here,” Cory says with a shrug. She walks over to Helen, a slight bounce in her steps, before rummaging in her pockets and presenting Helen with a slightly crushed daisy. “Stressful day?”
“Don’t get me started.” Huffing out a small breath, Helen accepts the flower and threads it behind her ear. It’s a little ritual the two have shared since they met; Cory had started it, when she all but shoved a bright lily Helen’s hand the first time they’d run into one another.
Cory hums gently, sidling up to Helen and pressing into her side. “You’re heading out tomorrow morning for your quest, right?”
“Yeah.” Silence fell over the two. And then Helen realizes what Cory had just said. “Wait, how do you know about that? I haven’t gotten the chance to tell anyone yet!”
Cory shrugs. “Emory overheard Muriel talking to Joanna about it. The whole castle knew twenty minutes later.”
Helen groans and buries her head in her hands. Cory pats her shoulder sympathetically.
“So where are you going?” Cory’s voice is casual, but Helen knows her well enough to hear the undercurrent of curiosity in her voice.
Now, technically Helen isn’t supposed to talk about her mission to anyone. She was given strict instructions to keep everything close to her chest, to not trust anyone. Someone had infiltrated the palace and passed information to Ausburn; no one could be trusted until the Mage’s plans were unveiled. Not to mention that any and all missions handed down from the king himself weren’t to be shared with anyone, not even her fellow knights.
But this is Cory, the first person Helen befriended when she came to the palace. This is Cory, who always knew how to draw Helen out of her shell and knows exactly what to say to make Helen smile. Helen would trust Cory with her life. She’d never even considered keeping this from Cory.
“You know what happened to Prince Levi.” It isn’t a question. There isn’t a person in the palace who hasn’t heard what occurred that morning. Cory nods, wrapping a hand around Helen’s arm and giving a reassuring squeeze. “Well, Muriel has reason to believe Mage Ausburn was behind the attack.”
Cory hisses in a breath. “I thought he was holed up in the Hingcour Peaks?”
“Apparently he got bored.”
“So, what, they want you to go find him and ask him to stop? I’m sure that’ll go over well.”
“There’s no concrete proof that it’s him. Not yet. Muriel doesn’t want to go after Ausburn until it’s strictly necessary.” Helen gestures to herself. “That’s where I come in. I have to find Ausburn. I find him, I find the proof we need.”
Cory’s fingers tightened around Helen’s arm, just shy of being painful. “That sounds incredibly dangerous.”
“It’s part of the job description,” Helen shrugs.
Cory’s hand leaves Helen’s arm. Helen turns back to Whiskey, resuming her brushing. She can feel Cory’s gaze on her, but doesn’t look up, not wanting to see the concern that she knows is shining out of Cory’s eyes. Whiskey shakes his head gently under Helen’s hands, pleased with the attention.
“Alright,” Cory says after a moment. Helen readies herself for the lecture on safety that is sure to follow. But instead, all Cory says is: “I’m coming with you.”
Helen whips around to face Cory, brush hanging limply from her hand. Even Whiskey lifts his head, as if he was just as shocked at Cory’s words. Had Helen heard her right? "What - what do you mean you're coming with me?"
Cory’s lips are pursed, arms crossed over her chest. Helen knows this look far too well; Cory’s gearing herself up for an argument. “I’m coming with you,” she repeats, narrowing her eyes at Helen.
“That’s - you -” Helen splutters. “You’ve never said this about my other missions!”
“Your other missions didn’t involve you running headfirst at the most dangerous mage in Arla!” Cory throws her hands in the air, voice bordering on a shriek.
“I’m not running at him! It’s just reconnaissance!”
“But what if you get caught? What if he hurts you?”
“I won’t.” Helen reaches out and grabs Cory’s hand, linking their fingers together. “I’m going to be fine. I’d be more worried about you if you came along.”
Cory’s really pouting now. “I can take care of myself!”
“Well, right, but -”
“Remember when I beat you in that spar?”
Helen frowns. “Just because you fight dirty -”
“I won fair and square!”
“What about your job?” Helen asks, hoping the new topic might yield better results. She knows for a fact that Cory would rather cut her own hand off than let anyone touch her flower beds. “You can’t just up and leave without any explanation! Who’ll take care of your flowers?”
This slows Cory down. She rocks back on her heels, looking torn.
“They’ll probably have Ryan take over for you,” Helen says, nodding sagely. “Remember what happened last time he came near your flowers?”
There hadn’t been a plant left untouched. Cory had been devastated. Ryan spent weeks apologizing; he didn’t mean to kill the plants, not really. The poor man didn’t have much of a green thumb.
For a moment, it looks like Cory might conceded to Helen’s point. But then she just shakes her head. “I can always plant new seeds. If I lost you …”
She trails off, but Helen can hear what Cory isn’t saying. If Helen fails this mission, there’s no coming back. Cory’s doing her best to hide it, but Helen can see worry in the way Cory holds herself, stiff and unyielding.
Of course she knows how dangerous this mission was. How could she not? But how could she bring Cory along, only to put her in danger? Cory is more than capable of taking care of herself, yes, but what if she got hurt on Helen’s watch? She’d never be able to forgive herself.
On the other hand, isn’t she one of the only people who would could keep Cory safe?
Cory is pouting again, eyes silently imploring Helen in a way she’s never really been able to say no to. And really, that’s not playing very fair.
“Alright,” Helen sighs, already knowing she’ll regret this. “You can come.”
Cory brightens immediately, throwing herself at Helen and throwing her arms around her shoulders. “Thanks, Hel! This is going to be great!”
For a moment, Helen can’t breathe. Despite her small stature, Cory was deceivingly strong. “If you come with me,” Helen says, wheezing just a bit, “you can’t mess around. This isn’t a game.”
“Of course,” Cory nods solemnly. She then immediately ruins the mood by grinning at Helen. “You know, I’ve never been on a road trip before.”
Helen groans, pushing her face into Cory’s neck. “You’re going to be the death of me,” she grumbles, voice muffled.
Cory laughs, and Helen can feel the vibrations through her skin. “You love me,” she teases as she tangles her fingers in Helen’s hair.
“Yeah,” Helen sighs softly. “Yeah, I do.”

Hi! Day 11 question here, hope you're well! I'm mixing it up a little on day 11. I'd like to ask a question to Sir Helen.
Sir Helen, where would you like to see your relationship with Cory go? Where do you see yourselves in five years? Ten years? Tell me the dream O Wonderful Knight!
Feel free to answer however you like, you don't have to write it from her point of view I just thought this would be fun and different :)
hi!! omg I love this, I’m 100% going to answer this as Helen (also I’m imagining she’s answering this after the events of AKB for reference lol, so she’s had her whole character arc and everything)
Helen:
*shrugs* Honestly, as long as I’m with Cory I’ll be happy. But since we’re talking about futures ... I think I want to marry her. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me - well, after Whiskey, of course. *laughs* Don’t tell her I said that! I don’t know when I’m going to do it, but I want to propose to her. There’s still so much going on, and I can barely keep my head above the water as it is. But once things settle down ...
She always makes the first move, you know? She walked up and slotted herself into so easily into my life that I could barely remember what it was like without her there. And when I tried to drop hints that I was in love with Cory because I was too afraid to actually tell her, Cory blurted out that she was in love with me after I screwed up my best attempt at a romantic walk by tripping into her garden and flattening her flowers. *laughs* It was not my most romantic moment. But I want to surprise her. Cory would like that - she’s into all that spontaneous romantic stuff. And -
I don’t think we’re going to be living in Kenton in 5 or even 10 years. Wow, there’s something I’d never thought I’d say. *laughs* If you told me I’d be willingly considering leaving the palace guard a few years ago, I would think you were crazy!  Being a knight at the palace was my biggest dream for the longest time, ever since I was a kid! I didn’t even consider doing anything else! But now, I can’t help thinking that it would be nice to settle down. Cory could have her own garden! She wouldn’t let me near it - according to her, I’m a threat to plants everywhere. In my defense, I only killed a few plants! And some of them weren’t even my fault! But I know she’d love to have a piece of land that’s wholly hers. Oh, maybe I could join the town’s local gaurd!
*pause* Maybe I should start looking for houses.

Hey, I hope your day had been well! My question for today is: in which ways are you and your main oc similar and different?
hi!! i'm doing pretty good! it's v hot out today, so i'm hiding inside by the ac lol. oooh i like this question!
similar
Helen and I both do things for others to show our affection! (I think that's the acts of service as a love language?? idk) We both tend to be better at expressing our feelings through action rather than words :) We're both tall and have made fun of our shorter friends by using them as an arm rest or squatting down to talk to them. We both tend to forget to take breaks when doing a long term project and accidentally burn ourselves out.
I also made her ace which was honestly a self indulgent move because I'm ace, and i just want more asexual characters you know?
different
Helen tends to be very controlling. She hates letting other people take charge, because of her trust issues and need to know whats going on at All Times. I, on the other hand, could honestly care less whose in charge. I'm more "go-with-the-flow" about stuff like that, because I don't have enough energy to waste on fighting about whose in charge. Helen is very aware of her health and is very in shape! Mostly because her job is a very physical one and she has to make sure she's in shape. Whereas I don't have a lot of time to think about exercise and the only time I was ever In Shape was during high school because I played a sport (field hockey!!) and had to do a ridiculous amount of conditioning every day. I try to have a more positive outlook while Helen sticks with a more pragmatic view.
Also, I have parents ;)

a kingdom betrayed weekly update
wordcount: 2.8k
this week's progress: i'm really excited to post this!! i finished the first chapter, and also introduced a character (emory) who was originally just supposed to be in the first chapter and nothing else, but they really grew on me 🥺
favorite excerpt:
“Helen, that was amazing!” Arms were thrown around Helen’s neck, nearly sending her to the ground. Twisting slightly in the grip, Helen saw Emory’s face inches away from her own. Several inches shorter than Helen, they were now hanging off of her with their feet dangling above the ground.
“Thanks, Em.” Helen wiggled out of Emory’s grip and set them back on the ground, squeezing their shoulder. “Are you up next?”
“Nah, I have a few more minutes to wait,” Emory said. They jerked their thumb over to the center of the training area, where two other knights were getting into position.
Helen hummed. “Who are you up against?”
“Tristan.” Emory cracked their knuckles with a grin. “I’m going to kick his ass.”
Raising an eyebrow, Helen glanced over where Tristan stood. He was one of the older knights in the palace guard, having joined long before Helen or Emory were old enough to even consider becoming a knight. “I’d like to see you try.”
“Oh, piss off,” Emory laughed. “Come on, let’s watch. I think Joanna’s taking bets.”

9, 11, and 13 for the ask game
thanks so much for the ask!! <3 i’m going to do these for helen!
9: what line best shows who they are?
i don’t have too much written yet, but here’s one:
“Helen reacted on instinct, running forward and slotting herself under the knight’s arm before he could collapse.”
helen goes out of her way to help others. the whole reason she became a knight was to protect people who couldn’t protect themselves.
11: how do they handle intense pressure?
when helen’s under pressure, she puts her head down and throws herself at the problem until it’s gone. she tends to overwork herself because my girl has no sense of self care and doesn’t know what a break is
13: what quality do they admire most in others?
helen admires people who have strong beliefs. she’s drawn to people with conviction and strong moral codes, as that something she values in herself as well. i joke about how cory inserted herself into helen’s life, but that’s kind of true. cory pestered helen for a couple of days and helen was like “huh she’s really persistent. i like this girl” and the next thing she knows she and cory are best friends

7 and 8
07. Is there a catchphrase or sound that they tend to make a lot (likely without being aware of it)?
Helen often hums to herself when doing repetitive tasks, such as polishing her armor or setting up camp. She doesn’t like silence, so it’s her way of filling the air around her with some sound. Helen will usually end up humming a song her mother used to sing to her when she was little, which is a sort of unconscious decision (Helen doesn’t remember any of the words, just the melodies. It’s been a long time since she’s heard her mother sing)
 08. What is, perhaps, their biggest flaw? Are they aware of this or oblivious to it?
Helen has a black and white way of thinking about the world, and has a few very strong ideals that she really believes in. She’s not really aware of this flaw until about halfway through the story, when she’s faced with several truths that directly contradict her worldview and force to reevaluate the way she sees the world.
thanks for the ask!! <3

Hello! I hope you’re well! Here’s an underwing question because I want to get into the nitty gritty of Sir Helen a little.
What was her lowest point? What is her deepest fear? Is her loyalty to her knightly duty truly intrinsic? Or does it perhaps stem from a place of owing it to those who adopted her to do something worthwhile?
Be as vague as you need to!
hi!! i'm doing well, i hope you're good too! <3
Helen's biggest fear is losing the people she loves. When she was younger (about five) her parents were killed in a raid. Helen was injured, but survived and was taken in by a family friend. While she doesn't remember much, what she does remember is enough to fuel her fear of losing everyone she loves and her protective streak
Helen became a knight because she was convinced that it was the best and only way to make sure she would never lose anyone she loved again. She grew up in a town called Tarrin that is right next to the capital city Kenton. Tarrin is pretty much a rest stop for knights that are taking long journeys. Helen's foster father David runs a stable and takes care of the knight's horses when they pass through (fun fact there's a word for this job!! It's called hostler, which is means the groom/stableman who takes care of the horses at an inn; it was first used around the fourteenth century!! can you tell i spend too much time researching little things instead of writing njbhfn). So Helen was around knights pretty much her entire life. She idolized them a lot, and would hang around the inn to listen to their stories and try and badger them for advice.
When Helen is about eleven (a year before she becomes a squire) David gets injured - nothing too bad! - and is stuck in the town's infirmary for a week. Helen freaks out anyway, because the only other time someone she loved was injured (ie her parents) they died. A knight actually helped David out, bringing him to the infirmary and to Helen that was basically a sign that becoming a knight would let her protect her loved ones.
(There's going to be a scene where Cory gets pretty badly injured in AKB, and Helen is going to lose her shit 👀👀)
now that i'm typing this out, i realize i may have accidently given helen a very batman like backstory hbvdbhjvfbhj

Hope your day has been well. Day 18. Which character did you think of first in your WIP?
hi!!! thanks for the ask!! :DD
I started off with Helen!! I knew I wanted a story with a female knight. right from the beginning. I didn't know what kind of story I was going to write yet (the plot of AKB has changed several times before looking the way it does now lol) but Helen was always there!!

💝
💝: who has your favorite character arch? give a brief summary
helen does! helen is, above all else, very loyal. she sort of sees the world as black and white, and has certain beliefs that she sticks to no matter what. i suppose you could call her lawful good? one of her loyalties is to the king; she’s a knight in the king’s army, and she fully believes that the king is good ruler and a good man. but over the course of the novel, she’s faced with several truths that conflict with her beliefs. not to get too spoilery, but one of the things she struggles with is the truth that the king is not as good as she thought he was. it’s one of the bigger conflicts of the story, but by the end of it she realizes that not everything is black and white; there are many shades of grey.
thanks so much for the ask!! <3

In a more modern setting, what store would Helen have a membership card for?
omg i love this question
helen would 100% have a membership to Dick's Sporting Goods (apparently it's called a ScoreCard which is amazing bvhbjfdbhdv). Helen is a Jock, so she'd always be there to get supplies
List of sports I think Helen would participate in a more modern setting: fencing, track (specifically a long distance runner - she would do the marathon every year), horseback riding and field hockey (mostly bc I played field hockey and it's v fun - helen would be a forward)

underwing challenge - day three
Who is your main cast? Describe as many of your OCs as you can cram into one post.
time to meet the gang from a kingdom betrayed!! (both helen and cory have actual intro posts which i'll link lol,, i still need to finish the others)
MAIN CHARACTERS
Sir Helen Mast: [she/her | 24 years old | asexual lesbian]
Helen is the narrator! She's been a knight for six years now (she became a squire when she was 12, and was knighted when she was 18) and has been employed at the palace for three years! Helen's parents died when she was very little (their town was raided) and she was raised by her father's best friend. She's loyal, protective and hard working BUT tends to have a very black and white way of thinking and has some issues letting others take charge in a situation. She has a Shire horse named Whiskey! He was a gift from her foster father when she was knighted
Cordelia "Cory" Langston: [she/her | 25 years old | bisexual]
Cory is a gardener at the palace and Helen's best friend! Cory's mother worked at the palace, so she and her brother grew up in the palace! Cory's brother moved out when he turned eighteen to move in with his then boyfriend (and later husband) but Cory stayed with her mother. She started working under the head gardener when she was 14 and fell in love with the job! Cory is optimistic, outgoing and knows a lot about nature. But she tends to be impatient, stubborn and blunt. Cory also has the tendency to adopt any animal that crosses her path, especially if they're injured.
Moss Pennbrook: [they/them | 24 years old | nonbinary bisexual]
Moss is our resident bard! Their parents were apart of a traveling theatre troupe, so Moss was pretty much destined to be a theater kid. They grow up traveling all over the kingdom, which Moss loves because they get to see so many different places!! They strike off on their own when they're 20, and continue to travel. Moss ends up helping Helen and Cory out of trouble, and asks to join their quest because they want to go on an adventure!! Moss is smart, good in a fight and witty. However, they tend to jump headfirst into situations without bothering to think about the consequences (what do you MEAN there are consequences for your actions??) Moss can play several instruments, but their favorite is the violin :)
Tabitha "Tabby" Fairburn: [she/her | 27 years old | trans lesbian]
Tabby is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, and a very powerful witch! She lives with her mother and several of her sisters in a cottage near the outskirts of the kingdom. She's the official "protector" of her town, having taken over after the last protector disappeared into the mountains. Tabby's passionate, quick thinking and protective of her friends/family. She's also very good at improvising, and uses her magic in very creative ways to get out of trouble. She has trouble trusting newcomers; as the town's protector she's always on alert for potential attacks. Her familiar is a ferret named Felix! Tabby found him in town when she was younger and they've been inseparable ever since :)
SIDE CHARACTERS (that are still important to the plot)
Emory Warren: [she/they | 22 years old | trans fem nonbinary asexual]
Emory is also a knight at the palace! She's pretty new and has only been working for a year or so. They were recruited to the palace guard around the same times as Helen, and the two became quick friends. Emory is promoted to the prince's personal guard halfway through the novel, as the old guard was pretty much all killed in the attack which is a huge promotion for her! They become an important player in the second half of the book. Emory is a very positive person, and is usually very cheerful. They're also pretty good at healing. Their mother was a nurse, and taught Emory everything she could. Emory has some trouble fighting with weapons; she's far more skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Emory ends up teaching Levi how to fight, because he desperately needs lessons.
Prince Levi Sherridan: [he/him | 17 years old | gay]
Levi is the only son of the king and heir to the throne! He's attacked at the very beginning of the novel, and it's this attack that kicks off the events of the novel! He becomes an important player in the second half of the book. A lot of his time is taken up by learning everything he can about being king (all about the justice system, the economic status of the kingdom, how to work with other countries, etc) but Levi tries to take time to actually visit the different towns in the kingdom so he can see for himself what's going on. He's soft spoken and genuinely tries to be the best ruler he can. He's book smart, but that's pretty much it. He has no clue how to hold his own in a fight, but he still has time to learn :)
