IIRC the Ocean Spirit in the cartoon never made a noise, which made him more terrifying. He also was completely unaffected when hit with by the catapults, which made him more terrifying.
And he looked like a fish, which didn't make me think "what is godzilla doing in this movie?"
Just another thing where the Live Action makes things worse for no reason...

So, no hate to the cgi artists on the netflix atla series. Art is hard. But I still personally headcanon live action Giant Spirit Koi to look like this guy's art:

Spoiler for the Life Action Series of Avatar the Last Airbender
The ocean spirit and avatar fusion seems so weak compared to the cartoonish one. They take WAY to long to wreck havoc on the firebenders and just straight up fall because of some bombs. The cartoon version just wiped their hands and the fleet sunk. I just think the rage and grief and pure power just falls flat on the new one.

On the shores of a turquoise sea, where the waves lapped like a lullaby against the shore, there was a girl named Isla with a spirit as wild as the ocean itself. Her hair cascaded like a waterfall of liquid amber, kissed by the sun and teased by the salt-laden zephyrs.
Isla's soul thrived amongst the call of the seagulls and the rustle of palm leaves. Her swimsuit, a tapestry of lush florals on a canvas of seafoam green, fluttered in the breeze, its ties and frills dancing to the rhythm of her movement. A pair of delicate earrings, shaped like the shards of a sunset, dangled from her ears, a hint of the fire that burned within her heart.
Today, Isla was more than a mere visitor to the beach; she was its enchantress, her silhouette a part of the coastal poetry, her presence the brushstroke of nature's own masterpiece. With every step, she wove a story of freedom, her eyes reflecting the vastness of the sea, a wanderer's gaze, forever seeking the line where the sky embraces the water.

I just realized that since moving, I haven’t seen the ocean at all. I used to see it everyday, all day.
I miss the ocean.
I wonder if it misses me too.

In the cartoon I assumed that the Ocean Spirit, after merging with Aang, goes after the Fire Nation fleet because it wants to protect the Northern Water Tribe. It only goes after Zhao on its way back as a form of divine punishment.
In the live action it is going after the Fire Nation fleet out of revenge, the wrath of a person whose love was just killed. Why then didn't it go straight for Zhao? - Eh, it's a minor mistake, one that I am willing to overlook. The changed motivation of the Ocean Spirit is okay because it serves Aang's altered character arc.
Also, thinking of the spirits as a couple made me wonder - isn't this sort of Yue ending up in an arranged marriage by becoming the moon? She doesn't love the Ocean Spirit like she loves Sokka and she doesn't really have a choice.

image 1: a quote from Ovid that reads: "And Orpheus received her, but one term was set: he must not, till he passed Avernus, turn back his gaze, or the gift would be in vain."
image 2: excerpt from the script of the film Spirited Away that reads: "Haku: But I can't go any farther. Just go back the way you came, you'll be fine. [highlighted] But you have to promise not to look back, not until you've passed through the tunnel."
image 3: a drawing, labeled in all-caps handwriting "a venn diagram of love vs. grief:". the drawing is a single circle.
image 4: an excerpt, highlighted and italicized, from Jenny Diski that reads: "People don't understand about repetition, do they? How it is at the heart (thump, thump, thump) of obsession; at the erotic centre (drip, drip, drip) of desire. You do, of course. Repetition is insatiability spelt sideways."
image 5: a quote from Franz Wright reading, "And let me ask you this: the dead, where aren't they?"
image 6: a quote from Adrianne Kalfopoulou in red text, reading, "Grief will keep you reaching back / for what is not there"
image 7: an excerpt from Jon Ware that reads, "Here's my question. If the ghost wants nothing more than to be witnessed, why would it appear behind you, not in front of you? The only answer I can think of is this: [underlined] it appears behind you because it already knows, to an absolute certainty, that you will have no choice but to look back."
image 8: a quote from Kazimierz Wierzyński that reads: "I understood the true fate of Orpheus, that [highlighted] love is a constant terror of loss."
image 9: a screenshot of a tumblr ask from an anonymous user who says, "What's the point?" user prisonhannibal responds, "of what? it's love though".
image 10: two lines from aeschylus reading, "Orestes: This was always going to happen. She's been dead since the beginning."
image 11: an excerpt from Ocean Vuong that reads, "Your absence has gone through me // Like thread through a needle. / Everything I do is stitched with its color."
