I will never say Splatoon 3 is a dissapointment, because it is far from that. Sure, there are some weird design choices that I don't really agree with, but it's such an improvement from the previous two overall. however, there's one feature that the developers teased since the very beginning that makes me feel, for lack of a better word. Cheated.
Shortly after the Splatoon 3 announcement trailer went live at the end of Febuary 2021's Nintendo Direct, the official SplatoonJP Twitter account posted various bits of information that weren't brought up during said Direct. One thing that stuck out in my mind was what they said about stages; the SRL said that the Inklings and Octolings would be fighting in the wilderness now. I, personally, was SO flipping excited.
Many, MANY people, however, weren't as pleased as I was upon reading this, predicting that all of the new stages were going to be a complete snoozefest in the aesthetics department, which. Does not make sense to me. Like, at all. Infact, once September of that same year rolled around, everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon spotting that two stages in the city were returning. Flash forward to 2022-23 and we've gotten stages primarily set in a city/town environment. The "fighting out in the wild" idea was SUCH a missed opportunity and, slightly contradicting what I said at the start of this post, I still feel incredibly dissapointed they kinda forgot about this idea.
So...why exactly do *I* think this would've been a great idea?
Getting this one out of the way, it would've added onto the many things that make this game stick out compared to its predecessors.
If the lore of the city is as interesting as it is now, imagine how many more details we could get about the outskirts of town.
...Yeah, that's about it. HOWEVER, here's my counter-argument to the "it would've been boring" take, using one of my favorite games ever, Super Mario Sunshine, as an example. Every single playable location in Super Mario Sunshine takes place on a tropical island setting. Every single area. To those who've never seen or played the game, most would say it sounds kinda boring. Let's take a gander at the areas in question.
An airstrip with waterpumps and crates scattered about, with a tall airport building scraping the sky.
A grassy windmill village separated into two halves with one large windmill putting it all together.
A harbor littered with colorful boats, grates, and buildings, the district area even putting together a seafood market.
An oceanside with a spire of light and a smoothie bar.
An amusement park with cartoony boat rides and ferris wheels.
A bay with large cliff faces engraved with massive shell statues and historic runes
A haunted hotel that, despite being cramped and small, has a massive labyrinth of rooms connected in very specific ways.
A festival loving exotic village above a deep chasm held together with massive trees.
All of which are interconnected via a humble town filled with fruitstands, shop buildings, fountains, boats, statues, and a massive shrine in the center.
Did I mention that, in every single one of these areas, you can spot the other levels in the background?
Splatoon already has something similar, albeit slightly more linear. You can spot some stage geometry in the background of a few stages, as well as every stage having its own unique lore. C'mon, the lord of the lake? It also has a similar idea of taking one general setting and ripping it up into seperate pieces. Every stage is in a city, but each location in the city is very unique. A warehouse, a parking garage, a port, a depot, a garbage dump, a shopping mall, a skatepark, a grocery store, I could go on. So, tell me...why would this idea suddenly be boring if the same was done with a more earthy, wilderness-like setting?
As of writing this post, Splatoon 3 is still getting updates, adding new stages and the like. So far, the only stages we've seen outside a city/town setting are Scorch Gorge, and a currently unnamed desert ruins stage, both of which still having some form of connection to city life.
I'm really hoping we get more stages with the wilderness idea in mind. I cannot express just how much of a missed opportunity this is.

It’s at @blackplaguebrewing in inland Oceanside on March 24th and is open to the public. Earlier in the day there will be a “Legends Super Session” at the Linda Vista Skatepark. Be there! #loveandgutsartshow #skatelegends #skateboarding #skategods #lindavistaskatepark #blackplaguebrewing

San Diego skate parks rule Tokyo
Tumblr media
Chris Dangaard @chrisclicksdigital
Will Cortez states he was at first employed by the Vista training center in 2018.
North County professional athletes are sendin’ it from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games — consisting of Bryce Wettstein, Jordyn Barratt, Cory Juneau, and Heimana Reynolds.
Per their Olympic Games’ profiles, Bryce Wettstein, who is 17, was born and still lives in Encinitas; Barratt is 22 and dwells in Oceanside; Juneau, 22, was born in San Diego; Reynolds, 23, resides in Carlsbad. The 4 of 12 skateboarders — sporting the red, white, and blue uniforms — will skate in the park-discipline preliminaries at the Ariake Urban Sports Park on August 4-5.
The other Olympic skateboard discipline is described as “street,” which is carried out surrounding to the park course, looking like much of what you’d see in downtown San Diego: curbs, hand rails, stairs, walls, benches, and slopes.
Tumblr media
The schematics of the 2 skateboard courses in Tokyo are credited to California Skateparks.
The abovementioned North County skaters will move their plywood decks installed on 4 polyurethane wheels through a hollowed-out primarily cement course with a series of gnarly curves and bowls in the park occasion. The judges evaluate the skateboarders’ series of techniques, much performed in mid-air, on height, speed, trouble, and “landing bolts.”
CA Training Facility in Vista, about 9 miles west of where the I-15/78 highway intersect, is a super-significant part of the inaugural skateboarding occasions at the 2020 Olympics. “They make the best skate parks hands down that I’ve skated,” Olympic-skateboarding coach Will Cortez stated in an August 1 interview with me. “That’s why they’re designing and making the Olympic courses.” On the Olympic Games’ site, the schematics of the 2 ‘huge’ skateboard courses in Tokyo are credited to California Skateparks. “The same owners run them,” Cortez described. “It’s incredible to see it from ground zero and then once it’s done. Especially working on them and knowing the work that goes into it.”
Tumblr media
Tony Hawk, 53, was among the very first to experiment with the park course at the Ariake Urban Sports Park prior to the street competitors started.
Cortez states he was at first employed by the training center in 2018, right around the exact same time he contended in the Vans Pool Party skateboard contest. “So I started that the day after the contest …. and I started working construction, building skate parks.” Then after a year or two after, Cortez coached groms and Olympic skateboarders from Russia and China that’d practice at the training center. Now 24, Cortez becomes part of the Mexican Olympic skateboard group, which could not amass sufficient indicate complete in Tokyo. “For park skating in Mexico, you can see a difference like in the styles and stuff; there are not as many parks (with bowls) to skate at. It’s just going to be a process to further them to get more skate parks in their country for the sport to grow.” Unlike the park design, the street skating discipline throughout the border is quite chingon. Sometimes, Cortez, a double-Mexican-American resident, parks his Hyundai by the San Ysidro Port of Entry and strolls throughout the border with a skateboard in hand, strikes the Tijuana streets, gets a bite to consume, then heads back to his day task in Vista.
Tumblr media
Cortez: “For park skating in Mexico, you can see a difference like in the styles and stuff.”
Chris Dangaard @chrisclicksdigital
“For the U.S., if you were to say where vert skateboarding is, I think you’d say it’s North County because that’s like where all the ramps are. We have Tony Hawk’s ramp (behind his house). There’s a ramp in Oceanside, which I don’t know if [the owner] wants it to be disclosed, there’s Elliot Sloan’s ramp in Vista, there’s Bob Burnquist’s ramp in Vista, there utilized to be one at the YMCA in Encinitas. Bryce Wettstein has a smaller sized ramp in Encinitas. Like, per capita, the most, for ramps worldwide, are most likely in San Diego County.
Then there are the ramps at the training center where the skaters of all levels describe Cortez as “Coach Will.” Vert and park skating disciplines are “essentially the same thing,” Cortez continued. “They are both ramps, and the deep end of the park usually has a vert (vertical plane), so there isn’t too much of a learning curve; that’s why we vert skaters are pretty good at park.”
About 4 miles north of the training center are the workplaces of Tony Hawk Inc., where the 12-time world skateboard champ is stated to have extra vert ramps. Hawk, 53, was among the very first to experiment with the park course at the Ariake Urban Sports Park prior to the street competitors started on July 24-25.
“As a kid that was mostly lambasted for my interest in skateboarding, I never imagined it would be part of the Olympic Games,” Hawk published on his social networks on August 1. “It’s surreal to now be in Tokyo bearing witness to this milestone.”
