It’s calm, quiet. A cold winter morning. His routine is simple. Wake up, get something to eat, and check the boreholes in the ice.

Nothing.

He reached down, yanking a Habit up by the neck. Poor thing froze under the ice. He tilted his head, frowning softly. He’s playing dead. Well, he would help. He would make sure they were fully dead. Tearing the Habit apart, he started scattering the remains in the other boreholes, making sure he wouldn’t return from the icy depths just like all the others.

Guess what floated past our cottage one recent evening ...?

The Viking Octantis. And, no, it didn't stray off course from the Danube River. It was exactly where it was supposed to be.

Last year, Viking - that high-end river cruise company - added Great Lakes cruises to its repertoire.

One option - a 15-day voyage between Toronto and Duluth, Minnesota - includes calls at Niagara Falls (Port Colborne) , Cleveland, Detroit, Mackinac Island and other places.

so... what's the deal between Octantis and Northstar? is there a reason they hate each other?

Octantis and Northstar have a lot of unreasonable beef, but you can trace it all back to one, teeny tiny little detail about them…

Northstar, or Polaris as Fairmount calls him, is the North Star.

Octantis is the South Star.

So, they absolutely despise each other.

The beef can be traced back to both of them thinking they’re better than the other, and it doesn’t help that Northstar is an American, and Octantis is Russian. The cold war was absolutely caused by these two wanting to send the other straight to hell, but not having access to the nuclear launch codes.

Along with that, Octantis does have almost parallel versions of Northstar’s friends, but they don’t get along as well and that really fuels his hatred for Northstar even more. Northstar on the other hand envies his freedom, and the fact that he lives directly next to an iteration rift. He sees Octantis guarding it and not letting anyone use that rift as complete bullshit.

Overall, they don’t really have any decent reasons to hate each other than the fact that they’re two Habits who were sharing the same iteration.
