On October 4, at about 2:20pm Eastern Standard Time (EST), FEMA is doing an emergency alert test. This means that all phones, regardless of if they have been placed in do not disturb will go off with that beeping noise. If you have a secret backup phone that you need the people you're with to not know you have, set a reminder to turn it all the way off.
For apple phones, this means holding the power button for five seconds and swiping the "power off" switch that shows up on the screen. Same with androids and early google pixels, except you'll be tapping a button. For google pixels 6 and later, you'll hold the power button and the volume up button at the same time. To turn on for all phones, you'll hit the power button and wait a sec.
Remember that the alert will still come through when you turn your phone back on, so make sure that you are in a place where that noise is safe.
Note that, for whatever reason, if they can't put out the alert, the backup test date is October 11th.
The link below is to the official press release with the information.

of course we'd never get to read / hear it, but i love imagining Jack Seward, with the patience of a saint, teaching Van Helsing how to use his phonograph the same way a child teaches their impatient parent how to use a computer

Jonathan: “I will skin him alive and feed his bones to the wolves. I will rip him apart limb from limb and tear his fangs out one by one. He will wish I had been merciful enough to send him to Hell.”
Van Helsing: “... You will be staying in bed with Madam Mina today.”

Animal of the Day!
Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Atlas Obscura)
Extinction Date- 1914
Habitat- Eastern United States
Size (Weight/Length)- 200 g; 40 cm
Diet- Nuts; seeds; Berries; Insects; Worms
Cool Facts- Imagine the sky so full of birds that it seemed like night. That’s how John James Audubon described the migration of the passenger pigeon. In the 1800s, passenger pigeons were one of America’s most abundant birds. These huge flocks would feast on acorns, beechnuts, and chestnuts, spreading millions of seeds. Their communal breeding colonies would cause branches to snap by the weight of thousands of birds. When a ‘resource’ seems endless to humans, they always find a way to exploit it. Passenger pigeons were slaughtered in the millions for their feathers to be used in pillows and their meat. Extinction was not defined when the passenger pigeon began their decline. In 1895, the last egg was taken from the wild as a museum specimen and the last wild individual was purposefully shot in 1896. In 1902, the last captive bred passenger pigeon was given to the Cincinnati Zoo, her name being Martha. Martha passed away in 1914 and with her, an entire species.
Rating- 13/10 (One of the most important historical lessons in conservation.)

Hello everyone,
If you haven’t heard, there’s going to be a nationwide test in United States. According to this article:
Nationwide Alert System Test on October 4, 2023
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Federal Communications Commission will be conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system on Wednesday, October 4th at 11:20 AM local time. The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies and disasters. The test messages will display in either English or Spanish depending on the language settings of the wireless device.
EAS messages are transmitted through radio and television with an alert tone or scrolling text across the bottom of the screen. The EAS message will say “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 11:20 to 11:50 hours PST. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”
WEA messages are transmitted to cell phones via cell towers and look like text messages that are accompanied by a distinct attention tone and vibration. The message will read "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."
All local radio and T.V. stations will broadcast the EAS test, and all cell phones that are on, not on airplane mode, and within range of a cell tower will receive the WEA test.
In the event the test cannot be conducted on October 4, the back-up date is Wednesday, October 11.
The full article will be below:

[ID. October 4. I feel restless and vicious. Yesterday, before falling asleep, I had a flickering, cool little flame up in the left side of my head. The tension over my left eye has already settled down and made itself at home. When I think about it, it seems to me that I couldn’t hold out in the office even if they told me that in one month I’d be free. And most of the time in the office I do what I am  supposed to, am quite calm when I can be sure that my boss is satisfied, and do not feel that my condition is dreadful. By the way, last night I purposely made myself dull, went for a walk, read Dickens, then felt a little better and had lost the strength for sorrow. I still regarded the sorrow as justified but it seemed to have withdrawn somewhat, I looked at it from a distance and therefore hoped for better sleep. It was a little deeper too, but not enough, and often interrupted. I told myself, as consolation, that I had indeed once more repressed the great agitation in me but that I did not wish to succumb at once, as I had always done in the past after such occasions; rather, I wished to remain entirely conscious to the final flutterings of that agitation, which I had never done before. Perhaps in this way I would find hidden steadfastness in myself. END ID]

So on many platforms i've seen people getting hysteric about the october 4 fema alert test thing happening tomorrow.
Your phone's gonna beep for a couple seconds. That's it. The world's not gonna end, it's not gonna be super dramatic. it'll be like if you got an amber alert or severe weather warning on your phone, except there's no emergency. A lot of warning posts came out because the beeping could be problematic if you've got a secret phone that beeping would give away, but if that is not you, you have nothing to worry about.
related, some misinformation i've seen floating around:
an EMP's gonna go off and shutdown the entire electrical grid. No. This is not happening. These tests are routine, and are not indicative of an emergency like that. Most posts i've seen about this were to use hysteria to whip up engagement. they're not serious in any way.
WW3 is about to start. Also no. depending on where you get your news from it may or may not feel super dramatic, but we're not about to get into WW3, and this test is, again, routine and normal

Van Helsing, into Jack's Phonograph: this thing on? (clears throat) To Jonathan Harker: I hereby prescribe you and dear miss madam Mina to Not Appear In The Novel Dracula for the remainder of the day. You must spoon-feed each other soup, cuddle by the fire, and fall asleep holding hands - and no Dracula-related activities! Doctor's Orders! Sincerely, Abraham Van Helsing (rattles off list of degrees until Jack's phonograph runs out of wax cylinder)
Jonathan to his diary, spending all day with Mina re-reading the "Dracula" manuscript: Van Helsing isn't the boss of me!
