⋆ "ah, you've made the mistake in thinking that just because this is a couples/family costume that you get any kind of say in it. you don't, actually."
⋆ "i love you, i swear i do, but we're not wearing matching costumes."
⋆ "do you remember what happened the last time you tried to carve a pumpkin?! we'll get laughed out of a&e if i have to haul you down there over this again."
⋆ "you're like the toughest person i know! am i really supposed to believe that a horror film is enough to have you cowering into my lap?"

⋆ "not to rain on your parade or anything, but since when are gingerbread haunted houses a thing?"
⋆ "please, i'm begging you. don't make me watch the nightmare before christmas again."

It has been brought to my attention that this years mistake is me writing the word ritual twice, once on the 2nd and once on the 23rd, so to combat this, please use the first ritual as something the oc does on a daily basis and the second one as an actual ritual, I deeply apologise for any confusion this may cause 😔
Please tag me in your art so I can reblog it without having to rely on tumblr's horrific search engine

Day Nine: Scientific
Summary:Floyd Leech xgn!reader. Jade has caught something fascinating at the institute he works in
CW: Jade's a shady researcher, Jade wants to have a human bred in captivity, Jade's sort of Yan, haven't decided if Floyd is yet, but if I decide to continue this I'll decide later
A/N: I have read a lot of fics where we're the researcher studying the Octotrio. This is the reverse of that 😂
Chapters Two Three
October 2023 Masterlist
Jade had not been home the last several nights. He was the head researcher at the Triton Institute, which meant that there were times that he would get absorbed in a project, and just forget to stop.
Floyd didn't care. As long as Jade kept himself alive, he could do whatever he wanted. But their parents cared. Which meant Floyd now had to go to the stuffy institute and drag his twin back home.
He knew the way by now. And Floyd's suspicious line of work meant all of Jade's workers left him alone whenever he visited. So after scaring the poor secretary, he made his way to the lab Jade was currently in.
When he swam in, the lighting was dark, even for the depths of the ocean. And warm. Very warm. If one could sweat underwater, Floyd would be sweating.
Jade, however, was nowhere to be seen. So Floyd, left to his own devices, decided to try and find this project that was supposedly so important.
The dim lighting made it difficult, but eventually he found a clipboard in Jade's handwriting.
Subject cannot withstand cold temperatures. I'll have to put them to sleep again so I can get a warmer installed.
Subject has fallen into what appears to be a state of despair. They no longer try to bite their handlers, but they refuse to eat. They lay down and don't move for hours.
Subject injured themselves today with their eating utensils. It seems to be an accident this time, but they got an odd look in their eyes. Closer supervision must be placed on them.
Subject continues to remain listless. All attempts at enrichment are refused.
Handlers have reported nothing but silence from the subject. Subject is giving nothing.
Subject knows my face. They moved for the first time in days when I looked in on the enclosure. Tried to hide in the corner. Perhaps we'll be able to play together.
There were more pages, but Floyd got bored. He set down the clipboard, and made his way further into the lab, accidentally running himself straight into glass.
He shook off the pain, and growled, before staring at the offending glass. Only to notice a smudge on the other side. A shivering smudge. He looked closer, pressing his face to the glass, and the smudge lifted its head.
He gasped in shock. A human? How did Jade get a human? The only other institute to have caught one, lost theirs 50 years ago. He'd only ever seen one in the photos from that researcher's book.
He'd thought, at the time, that humans were gross. Dirty, foaming at the mouth, with an extra set of limbs that were useless.
But you? You were clean, tired looking, but clean. And pretty. Your e/c eyes glittered, and your hair floated in the surrounding waters with an ethereal grace. On you, he didn't mind the extra set of limbs. If anything, they suited you. He wanted to touch them. What would your "legs" feel like? Would they be squishy like Azul's tentacles? Would they be like his and Jade's tails? Firm and lined with muscle?
Your eyes glittered in fear for a moment, as they scanned Floyd. You stiffened, and then seemed to find what you were looking for (or weren't looking for) and you relaxed a little.
He waved at you, and you hesitantly waved back.he grinned and pressed a hand to the glass, looking between it and you insistently.
You tilted your head, thinking, then crawled over, and pressed your own hand to his.
He giggled in excitement, and you smiled.
Then the fear returned to your eyes as you opened your mouth and released a high pitched sound that came from deep in your throat.
He didn't understand the sound, but he could recognize a sound of distress no matter the language.
You hurried back to your corner, and Floyd couldn't help the pout that covered his face.
"So, you like my brother. I'm hurt. We have the exact same face, you know," he heard Jade say behind him.
He turned to Jade just in time to see him toss a shrimp into his mouth.
"I can't wait to study the footage later. Would you like a job, Floyd?" He hummed. Though Jade said it pleasantly, he could feel the jealousy wafting off of Jade.
"Nah, sounds boring. I'm just here cause Mom and Pop said it's time to come home and take a nap."
Jade groaned, and set down his lunch, before picking up the clipboard Floyd had discarded.
"As you can see, I am very busy. It's not every day we get access to a human."
"You know I have to bring you home, whatever means necessary?"
"And you know I will fight."
Floyd groaned, and sat himself on one of the desks, turning to look at you. You were tense again, and watching the "calm" discussion between brothers with a palpable fear in your eyes.
When you noticed him watching, you buried your head in your knees again.
"It's so tiny?" He observed. Even though you were curled up, there was no way you would be big enough to survive down here. Anything under six and a half feet might as well just surrender immediately.
"Yes. I'm starting to suspect this may be normal though, and that the other human was an outlier," Jade hummed as he jotted another note down. He paused thoughtfully. "actually, I believe they were an outlier in every way, and this is what a normal human looks and sounds like. I have a team trying to get me a second one to prove it, though. Hopefully one that we can use to try and breed a new human with!"
He seemed excited about that last bit. Floyd was not.
"If the human is already scared of you, wouldn't fighting me, so you didn't have to go home, make it worse," Floyd deadpanned.
Jade frowned, and looked up from his clipboard, staring at you.
"Fine," he muttered, "but I'll bring your head back with me if I find out I missed something."
….
It was a week before he heard from Jade again.
He had expected the next time to be when his parents had sent him to collect him again, but he came home from work to see Jade sitting on his couch, paperwork in his hand.
"I want to offer you a part time job. I will take over your duties at the family business if I have to, but I need you at the institute."
"Boring," Floyd muttered, walking away from the couch.
"The human has only reacted positively to you. A week has gone by and we haven't figured out how to even get them to acknowledge us, aside from what we have come to realize are curses in their language. We need you to step in as their handler for a little while. The future of science needs you."
Floyd almost said no. But then he remembered you, and your odd legs, and your eyes, and your human sized hand pressing against his.
"I'll only help for three days. If I'm bored after that, that's it."
"Thank you Floyd! This means everything to me," Jade said with uncharacteristic enthusiasm. He must really be so tired.
But all Floyd wanted was to unravel you and your mysteries.
