Your reminder to *always* manually proofread your work, after Word just autoincorrected “oculists” to “occultists” three times in one paragraph about Norwich Poor Law Guardians funding medical treatment for poor people in the 16th century 🧙🏻👁️🧙🏿

tw: eyesight problems, mention of eye surgery and puking
I need to make an appointment for ophthalmologist but I'm so nervous about it. I'm so afraid to meet a rude doctor or that they will blame me for not visiting earlier, or something else
My vision is in super bad condition, my eyesight reduces so fast (I bought a new glasses almost a year ago and I already need new ones, and the same was with previous glasses of mine), I see that "transparent worms" all the time and i can get long lasting white spots after looking at something bright. This symptoms is very serious and I don't know why I can't start do something with it. I just can't and I'm super anxious and scared.
I'm so afraid even of thinking of eye surgery. I'm not afraid if it will be painful or scary, I'm afraid that I will do something and screw everything during the surgery.
I can't imagine if someone will do something with my eye... I can't even wear contacts. I tried a few times, but I start shaking in panic if it's something really close to my eye. Once I even ended up in a hysteric and actually puke because I was crying so hard. Yack
I'm so afraid... And I feel offended when doctors say that I'm worse than a little baby, because they can endure their eye tests and I can not. But I'm not doing it on purpose??? I'm a grown up person and I know that I do this for my health. But It is something else wrong with my brain that I'm so so afraid.

It's been some days and I can begin to do things again!!! With precautions. But still!!! After my visit the doctor had said that I'd have to wait at least ten days, but then on the day of the operation he told me that that had been an overestimate, luckily. I'll still have to take the eye drops he prescribed me for a while more (annoying, they feel super sticky) and I still feel a dull ache, but it's cool! Miss right retina should be hole-less and healing now. The whole ordeal was really quick and painless (just kind of unpleasant), but going in I was absolutely terrified. But the doctor did try to put me at ease, and the nurse was super nice to me!! She covered me in napkins because I couldn't stop tearing up (embarrassing) and she held my shoulders while the doctor did his thing T-T (I think it was standard procedure, but at least it felt comforting to me!!!). The follow up visit's in September, hopefully I won't have any other nasty surprises then. But I'm kind of coming to terms with the fact that I'll always be at risk of these things happening (painfully getting there, at least), especially since I have signs of degeneration here and there in both retinas as it is and apparently there aren't any measures to prevent them from going whack, just operations to mend them when things get Risky risky (fuck you myopia!!!!!). But whatever! I'll just have to go in for check ups muuuch more regularly. Ironically, it's a blessing that my eyesight has gotten worse again after all this time, because otherwise I wouldn't have gone this year either, and it's not like I experienced any symptoms from this thing, so who knows what might have happened then if it had gone untreated for much longer. I hadn't gone for a check up since 2018, which was irresponsible of me, but at the same time the doctor had never warned me that holes could form in my retinas, only that one day they could detach just like that. So I just assumed that that was it and that I'd have to run to the hospital the second any symptoms of that showed up (seeing weird lights, blurry vision, etc), but apparently there's more... Sorry for going off of what you told me!!! But whatever. All's well that ends well

Has anyone ever made the observation that Aiglamene might be a reference to Rosemary Sutcliffe's Eagle of the Ninth? It's an old kid's book from the 1950s but I wouldn't put it past Tamsyn to know it, esp since Sutcliff did a bunch of Arthuriana stuff too and Tamsyn def knows about that. But like... Aiglamene's name literally means Eagle. She is the Eagle of the Ninth. And the summary of the Eagle of the Ninth:
Discharged because of a battle wound that has left him lame in one leg, a young Roman officer Marcus Flavius Aquila tries to discover the truth about the disappearance of his father's legion in northern Britain. Disguised as a Greek oculist and travelling beyond Hadrian's Wall with his freed ex-slave, the British native hunter Esca, Marcus finds that a demoralized and mutinous Ninth Legion was annihilated by a great rising of the northern tribes. In part, this disgrace was redeemed through a heroic last stand by a small remnant (including Marcus's father) around the legion's eagle standard. Marcus's hope of seeing the lost legion re-established is dashed, but he is able to bring back the gilded bronze eagle so that it can no longer serve as a symbol of Roman defeat – and thus will no longer be a danger to the frontier's security. Rewarded by Rome for his services, he decides to settle as a landowner and farmer in Britain with his British wife, Cottia, and his freed friend, Esca.
The leg wound detail has me side-eyeing it I can't lie, it's a little too specific given Aiglamene is missing a leg and then it was regrown badly, and this is mentioned a bunch... and the bits about being disguised and the original Ninth outpost being overthrown and mutinous and finally redeemed through some heroic final stand... I don't know if this could give us either some insight into Aiglamene's backstory, or what could happen with the Ninth in Alecto? I know people have speculated Aiglamene's probably not originally Ninth, or even that she could be a spy/working w BoE? Idk if I agree, but regardless this might make her originally being an outsider and having her own motivations for being on the Ninth hold water a bit more. Or I could totally be chatting shit and this has nothing to do with anything and everyone's going insane waiting for Alecto news. Something to chew on at any rate.

Europe on $5 a Day
by Margaret Atwood
Sunrise. The thin pocked sheets are being washed. The city's old but new to me, and therefore strange, and therefore fresh. Everything's clear, but flat-- even the oculist's dingy eyes, even the butcher's, with its painted horse, its tray of watery entrails and slabs of darkening flesh.
I walk along, looking at everything equally. I've got all I own in this bag.
I've cut myself off. I can feel the place where I used to be attached. It's raw, as when you grate your finger. It's a shredded mess of images. It hurts. But where exactly on me is this torn-off stem? Now here, now there.
Meanwhile, the other girl, the one with the memory, is coming nearer and nearer. She's catching up to me, trailing behind her, like red smoke, the rope we share.

Appointment
Tumblr media
Lena had been putting off her oculist appointment for months now.
First claiming her sight wasn’t that bad, then that she didn’t have enough time. Then Supergirl called and she argued, “I can’t put off saving the city, dear.”
You couldn’t argue with that, but you were starting to worry about your girlfriend’s care of herself, taking matters in your own hands.
Lena arrived at L-Corp, early as usual, ready to face another day of meetings, interviews and paperwork.
“Any important meetings today, Jess?” She asked the secretary, handing her a paper wrapped croissant.
“Only one, miss Luthor. They’re already waiting for you inside,” she said, pointing to her office. “Thank you for the breakfast.” She smiled.
“Oh no worries, Jess. And again, just Lena.”
She headed to her office leaving her coat by the door, layed her purse by the desk and saw a familiar jacket laying in the chair.
“Y/n? I was wondering where you were this morning, love. What are you doing here?” She laughed.
“Lena dearest, you and I, are going to the doctor.” You grinned, as she raised an eyebrow.
“Are we now?”
“Yep! I asked Jess to scatter your meetings across the week,” you smiled proudly.
“Well then, I have no excuse it would seem,” she said, getting her purse and heading to the door. “After you, then.”
You put your jacket on and waltzed to her side, laying a kiss to her forehead, “It’s a date.”
-
You waited outside as she finally attended her appointment. Fidgeting with your jacket, trying to solve a sudoku – to no avail, watching the news.
She finally stepped out of the door, grimacing at the light.
“Ah, you had an eye fundus, didn’t you, love?” You asked, approaching her.
“Mhm,” she hummed. “You didn’t bring any sunglasses by chance, did you?”
“Of course I did, Len. You know me.” You smiled.
“Thanks, Y/n. I guess it’s pointless to try to get back to work, right?”
“Of course it is,” you laughed. “Come on, breakfast’s on me.”
“Lead the way,” she said, holding out her hand for you to grab.
