Many people were upset at the fact that Syd was referred to as Elena’s “girlfriend“ throughout season 2 because Syd is nonbinary and that is a gendered term

And while I did appreciate a lot the episode where they talk about looking for a gender neutral term to refer to Syd bc they are nb and would prefer another word, I also don’t think it was bad that they were called “girlfriend“ before

Because many nonbinary people DO like some gendered words, many nonbinary people would be okay with being called girlfriend. So saying that it was necessarily offensive and disrespectful is, in my opinion, wrong

By saying that them using the word “girlfriend“ is wrong you are telling real nonbinary people that they’re wrong for using that word too. You’re telling nonbinary people that they’re wrong for liking gendered terms. Many people prefer neutral terms and are uncomfortable with gendered ones, and that’s valid, but the contrary is completely valid too

So again, I loved the episode where they talk about how Syd wants another term, it was an important topic to represent!! but I would have been okay even if they didn’t do that. I see nothing wrong with a nonbinary person using the term “girlfriend“ if that is what they want and would have been okay with it if Syd decided they like the term
