Hi - we're on Tumblr now!
I'm sorry, who are you?
We're @sashasienna and @jonnywaistcoat, and we make tabletop RPGs as MacGuffin & Co.!
Tabletop what-nows?
Immersive storytelling games where you and your friends can dive into weird worlds, play fascinating characters and have harrowing adventures!
What, like Dungeons & Dragons?
*sigh* Yeah. Like Dungeons & Dragons
Ok, so what have you made?
Well, we've got a collection of system neutral micro-settings called Odd Jobs - it's eleven small and fascinating worlds to play games in, each with a campaign you can play through in a month. They're not designed for any particular system, so you can play them with whatever game you like!
Oh, and it won the 2022 UK Games Expo award for Best Adventure and was nominated for Ennie Product of the Year. Just sayin'.
Tumblr media
We've just released a tarot-themed magical river game called Upriver, Downriver with our dear friend Ella Watts, in which you play the crew of a ship sailing the Great River, either travelling upriver to the mythical Source with it's magic and revelation; or downriver towards the unending Sea with it's freedom and horizon.
Tumblr media
We have KER-SPLAT! - a high-chaos, full nonsense cartoon RPG we wrote with Ross Barlow, where the players can't die and the GM can't stop them in a hilarious cascade of silly jokes. Also, not to brag, but this is the funniest RPG rulebook you'll ever read.
Tumblr media
We also have smaller games, such as Zero Void - a no-prep one-shot zine game, where you play a bunch of desperate space criminals trying to escape a space station before the law arrives.
Tumblr media
Is there any way to keep up with what you do?
Well, following our Tumblr is a great start. We also have a monthly mailing list you can sign up to from our website that will keep you updated on what we do.
We also have a Patreon.
What was that? You're mumbling!
Yeah, like all creators trying to eke out a living, we have a Patreon. If you sign up you get behind -the-scenes updates, small or prototype games, RPG resources, new micro-settings and our monthly TTRPG Gamesmasterclass, where we use our 35(!) combined years of GMing experience to help you run the best games ever.
But what if I want to see your faces?
Then I have great news! We stream boardgames and RPGs every Sunday at twitch.tv/macguffinandco! Jonny also streams videogames every Friday at twitch.tv/jonnywaistcoat, and Sasha steams their Jane Austen Bookclub every Monday at twitch.tv/sashasienna
Sounds cool - where can I find out more?
macguffinandcompany.com, baby!
Wait, so why are you on Tumblr?
Because social media is a nightmare hellscape and it's weirdly the chillest one left. We are on other social sites as well - you can follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook - but this is our favourite.

15 fics with Harry pursuing unusual careers
I love the adrenaline and potential angst within the Auror partners trope as much as the next guy, but we can all agree that our mental health improves 10 times when we see Harry leaving the Ministry, embracing other possibilities and making his own destiny. This rec list hopes to celebrate those creative, disruptive, feel-good fics that are not afraid to come up with the most absurd positions and original job titles. They can be fun, smutty, depressing, hopeful or cathartic; there’s a little bit of everything in here and I’m hoping to bring some hidden gems into everyone’s radar, too. Happy readings!
Twisted Wizards by Enchanted_Jae (T, 3k)
Draco is just putting his life back together when Potter comes along and mucks it all up again. Job: storm chaser
The R. Correspondence by noeon (T, 7.5k)
While working on the Bagshot papers, Draco makes an important discovery for British Wizarding History. Now if only Harry can keep him alive long enough to enjoy it. Job: private security consultant
Per my last letter (I hope you choke on it) by @fluxweeed and @lastontheboat (T, 10k)
Or: the one where Harry has writer’s block and Malfoy isn’t helping. Job: writer
Home County, orphaned (G, 10k)
Harry is an architect and the reluctant part-owner of his own firm. Malfoy works at The Ministry but doesn’t actually have a proper job title even though what he does sounds as though it’s pretty important. Job: architect
A Working Title by mindabbles (E, 12k)
Another in the long line of absurd biographies finally drives Harry to a desperate act. How desperate he doesn't know until his ghost writer shows up at his door. Job: Daily Prophet columnist
An Improbable Bout of Summer Madness by acari (E, 16k)
Draco had planned a quiet, peaceful summer holiday with his son. The last thing he expected was to find Potter here, in Draco's little Cornish retreat. Making fudge in a shop? The idea was too ludicrous for words. Job: fudge shop owner
The Strongest Affinity by @eidheann (T, 17k)
Trouble finding a wand for Scorpius leads Harry and Draco to something they never imagined. Job: wandmaker
Phoenix Repair Services by carpemermaid (E, 20k)
Draco hires a suspiciously private wizarding handyman to fix his kitchen when he returns home to find it destroyed. He expects a middle-aged wizard with greying hair and a pudgy gut to show up. Instead, he gets Harry Potter—with a utility belt and a charming smile—who is more attractive than he has any right to be. Job: Handyman
The Snitch-Maker by Omi_Ohmy (T, 21k)
Draco is content with his Snitches, with the tap tap tap of his hammer, and the tiny gears and sharp scent of metal in his workshop - until one day Harry Potter appears, asking for help to solve a rash of Snitch-tampering in the Quidditch world. Job: QUABBLE official (Quidditch representative)
Silhouettes in Sunsets by Pie (T, 22k)
Draco Malfoy was a Gringotts accountant by day and a luthier by night, making musical instruments that sang the language of the player’s heart, language audible only to the ears of his soul mate. Harry Potter was a struggling quill pal to the children of war and the owner of Hedwig’s Owl Emporium on Diagon—haven for future pets, owls retired from services and orphaned chicks. Job: Owl Emporium owner
Better To Burn Than To Fade Away by Ren (E, 23k)
Harry Potter is a legend in the world of broomstick racing. He's won almost every cup, trophy, and bowl – except for the historical London-Nome which has been on hiatus for the past several years. Now the London-Nome is starting again, and Harry will do anything to pull off one last big win. Job: broomstick racer
Doing the Lambeth Walk by @blamebrampton (T, 26k)
There are only three traditional choices for the cashed-up hero after victory. Harry Potter is too young to settle down and provide the wizarding world with a happy ending, and has too acute a sense of humour to spiral downwards into a spectacular flame-out. That leaves a life of good works. Job: Owner of a Social Housing and Care Centre
All Roads by @korlaena (M, 36k)
Draco hates his job at the Prophet. He hates it even more when he’s assigned to write an article on Harry Potter, who left the country three years ago after their falling out. Draco doesn’t want to face the truth about himself, but he’s stuck between Harry and his duty, and he’s out of options. Job: Magizoologist
Whimsical by strawberryrose (T, 42k)
In which Draco is completely out of his depth (until he isn’t), Harry builds something improbable with the help of his friends, and everyone bonds over food. Job: amusement park owner
What Shall Not Be Unearthed by @iero0 (E, 49k)
At the northernmost point of Shetland, surrounded by pointed cliffs, towers the Ootsta Lighthouse on a small isle in the middle of the open sea. Little does Harry know that he's not the only new lighthouse keeper. Draco Malfoy is as obnoxious as he always was, with his posh tone of voice and his luxury yacht jumpers. Job: lighthouse keeper

I'm still very early in gintama but I just finished episode 13 and I'm obsessed with how gintoki describes having important people in your life and loss.
It's inverse to the widespread way that it's generally described in both media and life- that being, loss as a heavy feeling that weighs on the soul, negative emotions in general are described as heavy, connoting burden; whilst the opposite of that is a feeling of lightness, usually referring to how significant (in a positive sense) people in our lives can lift us up and help us carry our burden, as well as the fun, genuine joy that can be experienced around the people we love.
This is a very valid and real description of it, in my own experiences I have felt heaviness, so I completely understand where this representation comes from and I recognise and appreciate it. But the difference is why gintamas depiction sticks out to me.
Gintoki describes the deep care he feels for his friends as 'heavy'.
He quotes Tokugawa Ieyasu, saying, "To live a full life means to carry a heavy burden throughout a long journey." Gintoki's words are as follows:
"It's not really a burden...Everyone's got both hands full of something that matters. You just don't realise it when you're carrying it. It's only after you drop it that you realise how heavy it was in the first place."
Later, when he's literally carrying kagura and shinpachi he says, "you guys are heavy, damnit."
And I'm just really in love with this flipping of the negative connotations of 'heaviness'! Because yeah, love and care is weight on the soul, not in a way that drags you down, but in a way that grounds you. Lightness in this context now connotes something like empty space, a feeling of nothingness or numbness. Love and care is weight as opposed to lightness because weight means it impacts you, matters to you. You're carrying around all this love and it's not a burden, it's fulfilment.

Traintober 2023: Day 24 - Odd Jobs
Rusty's Duties Have Always Been Odd Jobs:
Tumblr media
Rusty’s duties have always been odd jobs.
It begins, as always, with Rusty being started up early in the morning by their driver, with Mr Hugh close behind. The little diesel is not the first out of the shed – that honour goes to Duke, who always pulls the first train of the day. Rusty quietly wonders if it’s so the others get some extra rest. Whatever the answer is, the heat from Duke’s boiler always warms the shed wonderfully, meaning the little diesel’s engine turns over on command, rather than coughing and spluttering in the cool of the early morning.
From there, Rusty’s first job every morning is to help Mr Hugh inspect the coaches and trucks in the yard. They check that they’re all in their proper places, that the brakes haven’t frozen solid (especially in the winter), that they’ve recently had their joints greased. It’s not a difficult task, nor is it a long one – but it’s enough to help Rusty wake up. The little diesel can’t drink coffee after all, so this has to suffice.
After the trucks and coaches have been checked, the pair inspect the points, and then Rusty is free to shunt trains until the track crew call.
The little diesel doesn’t always pull maintenance trains – it’s just not needed – but that’s alright. There are plenty of other jobs that need doing. Rusty’s roll on the railway – when the little diesel isn’t working on the track – is to act as the ‘relief’. This is a very important job. Whenever one of the other engines breaks down, has an accident, or is delayed, the ‘relief’ is called to cover for them. Rusty takes this job very seriously. It means that the little diesel has to be prepared at any moment to race up the line to help.
But Rusty loves the maintenance trains the most. These trains run up and down the line, and fix the track before there can be a problem. Rusty thinks there isn’t a job in the world more rewarding! Maintenance trains run most often in the autumn and spring – in the winter, it’s almost impossible to see the trackbed for the snow that coats it, and in the summer every engine is needed for the tourist trains. This leaves just the cold, wet month of November for maintenance trains in the autumn, and windy, wet March for maintenance trains in the spring.
Which was rather annoying, for the amount of rain that could fall and cause issues everywhere. Snow melted into torrents that threatened to wash away the line, but that never deterred Rusty. The little diesel dutifully trekked up and down the line, keeping their friends safe in their own way.
When not pulling maintenance trains or acting as the ‘relief’, Rusty could be found shunting trucks and coaches, or delivering coal to the villages in the mountains, or working the inclines. The little diesel did a million things in a day, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
And as night fell, as the stars began to illuminate the night sky with their twinkling light, Rusty returns to the shed. The little diesel is not the first to return – Sir Handel came off the rails earlier after yet another argument with the coaches – and the little diesel is certainly not the last to return – Rheneas has the mail run – but everyone agrees that Rusty deserves a place in the shed beside Duke. Because in the morning, Duke will be the first engine to get up steam, with his boiler warming Rusty’s engine so the little diesel can do it all again, continuously doing the odd jobs behind the scenes to keep the Skarloey Railway running.

I've been enjoying the Women's World Cup so much I started thinking of designing a sports-themed RPG, but then I remembered we kind of already did that with Primetime Colosseum, our game about ancient Roman gladiators, in a world where gladiators are basically pro-wrestlers (and also revival potions are a thing)!
In Primetime Colosseum, you play young, up-and-coming gladiators trying not to botch their shot at the big-time. As well as your character, you'll also create your persona - who you are in the ring - and over the game, you'll have to balance how popular your persona is with fans and how popular your character is with the powerful family who run your gladiator school (and who provide revival potions after a crowd-pleasing mortus match)! It's one of 11 system-neutral micro-settings in our anthology, Odd Jobs, so it can work with any system you like (though there's a small bolt-on mechanic within the game to keep track of your popularity).
You can get Primetime Colosseum with 10 other micro-settings in Odd Jobs here (for hardback) and here (for PDF), or you can listen to Jeff and Jonny playing it on the wonderful @partyofonepod here!

Challenge #04095-K077: Dead or Alive...
"What's with the bag?"
"It's my target."
"You were told to bring them in alive."
"They are alive."
"But... the bag...?"
"They said the only way I'd get them out of their office is in a body bag so...."
"Ok, fair enough, cell's over there, I'll unzip 'em after." -- Anon Guest
In all the inalienable truths of the universe, one of the better ones is they can't learn when they're dead.
It therefore follows that when the Galactic Alliance wishes to teach a lesson, they don't always send killers. They send someone relentless, which is almost the same thing, but also twice as frightening.
They're called Hunters, and they are also part of Pax Humanis. Though they have a lot more trust and freedom in the rest of society. They don't need companions, guardians, therapists, or any other safeguards. Those can help, from time to time, but they don't need them.

Aidan's Birthday
Tumblr media
The bright light of the sun cascaded across the room, right onto the bed where Aidan laid sleeping beside Vilthea. A groan came from him as he stirred, grimacing as his head turned to face the window. Lifting a hand he tried to block the pesky rays of sun that blinded him before giving up and bringing both hands up to rub his face and run through his hair.
He took a deep breath and exhaled as he looked up at the ceiling, "Today's the day. One year older..." Aidan spoke quietly to himself before sitting up to move only to stop when he noticed a slight squeeze along his leg. His brow furrowed as he lifted the sheets to see Vilthea's tail wrapped around his the length of his leg. His gaze shifted from her tail up to where she laid thinking she was awake and teasing him only to find her fast asleep, her wing wrapped around her providing her a natural shield from the sun. Letting out a sigh Aidan began to gently unwind her tail from his leg, and once free slipped from the bed.
Aidan stood and stretched loosening up a bit as he made his way over to the mirror, there he stared at his visage for a moment, "Where have the years gone? It feels like only yesterday I was just a young man working on the farm back home.." He spoke to himself quietly, his hand coming up to run through his hair as he examined it before chuckling, "At least I don't have any grey hairs yet."
Moving to the side table in the room he poured himself some much needed water to quench his thirst before heading over to the window and gazing out over the Boralus Harbor. Aidan watched the ships in the harbor, the dockworkers, and other early morning risers while he thought to himself. Thinking about his parents, and how while he was in Boralus he should find time to go see them especially with Pilgrim's Bounty coming up. A sense of guilt coming over him for not visiting them during Hallow's End like he wanted, but an odd job came up that paid well and he desperately needed the gold.
Aidan let out another sigh thinking about the current job he had taken, it felt.. below him. Being a bodyguard for a less than reputable party thrower who wanted him to use his demons as guards was slightly insulting. "What a way to spend your birthday, Aidan." He whispered to himself before taking a sip of his water.
