🙄 for Odette

Aside from the usual "fandom gets mad at a female character for even looking at the male ninja" people would accuse her of being a doormat which is kinda the point or consider her weak for not having a tangible Element. They'd also claim her romance with Lloyd is very forced despite them not actually getting together until seasons later AFTER working thru massive trust issues. You know. Growth. They'd find her boring compared to Harumi or Nya or even a shipping threat.

On the flip side they'd put her on a pedestal and give her uwu baby treatment even though she's perfectly capable of making her own decisions and, despite one may think, ISN'T let off easy for being a former gang member. You know. Growth.

Not Me creating a Ninjago OC! 😂😂🤡

Or rather, redesigning the oc i already had...OUR CANON NOW

So this plot bunny been bouncing around in my head for two years now buuut I wanna go somewhere with it! Basically it's an AU where Lloyd has a genuine love interest but ALSO a ninjago girl who gets the same complex arc as the guys. Enter Odette, a teenaged orphan responsible for taking care of the only family she has left, her younger sister Robin. To feed themselves she steals food, until one day she gets caught stealing from one of the SOG.

As her punishment she is forced to serve The Quiet One as a handmaiden/decoy, her parkour and knowledge of the city landscaping making her the perfect spy. While Odie despises this new arrangement she also knew that worse consequences could happen should she speak out. So she keeps quiet, finding solace in her mother's old book of Ninjagan Lore.

Until she meets a certain sextet of rainbow warriors....

Odie's handmaiden outfit, not as intricate as the royal garb but still keeping with the theming.

As Harumi's decoy she often dyed her hair white, but the color faded away revealing her true self

Her natural hair; in older sketches her hair was actually very wavy and curly but i decided to give her straight hair to set her apart from my other FCs

Odette's training gi after she joins the Ninja for good. Lavender, yellow and mint represents my other OCs Piper, Jetta and Rhea respectively while blue represents Nya

Odie's disguise outfit which is basically a modified version of the one Harumi wore on the show

Odette's Hunted Attire; in the finale of S8 she sacrifices herself to buy Lloyd some time, only to be sucked into the other realm along with the core four & Wu. From there she has to work extra hard to earn back their trust. So she fills in for green during that season - and also saves the last nest of dragon eggs - a huge step!

After completing her final test and proving to all of Ninjago her redemption, Odette received her own weapons. They're not golden weapons but extremely helpful in Airjitzu. They're called the Floral Fans and yes they are based on lotus blossoms

A scene where Odette tries to sway Harumi from her path of revenge; or sparing a loved one i dunno. But the former princess isn't budging in fact she's angry that her "friend" is defying her. To be honest Odette genuinely tried to help Harumi despite the circumstances; part of her development is realizing she can't blame herself for Harumi's actions. What's interesting about these two is that they are foils: Harumi is what Odie could have been had she allowed bitterness to consume her.

Yes I do ship her with Lloyd because I figured romance isn't bad in of itself, it just needs decent writing! So yeah I'm not afraid of going the romance route as long as my OCs are developed! Anyways I have refs for my OCs coming up sometime next month! I really love to see where this AU takes me next!

The Green Ninja watched Odette whack at the dummy, her colorful garb soaked in sweat. She had been working her tail off in hopes of redeeming herself in the eyes of the city. Even tho the ninja knew she wasn't responsible for Harumi's madness and subsequent yokai invasion, to everyone else - Jetta & Misako included - she was still guilty by association. Still, that only fueled her desire for atonement. And with his uncle's final test for her looming over the horizon, that only made the former lady-in-waiting even more determined to put an end to a period of constant distrust.

He wanted to tell her that everything would be okay, that he and his friends would help her every step of the way.

"I thought you were at the palace," the brunette spoke when she saw him enter the room.

"I was but i wanted to stop by and see you before the test," replied Lloyd. His face growing hot he held out a tiny little plant. "I brought you this for luck.

"How thoughtful of you," the ninja-in-training replied as she took the clover and slipped it gently into her tight obi. Years ago she wouldn't have believed in superstitions but then again weird things happen in Ninjago all the time.

She hoped with this teeny tiny little clover, she could pass that fateful test.

I challenged myself to write precisely 100 words (because that's how much is in a drabble) for some of my many OC x Canon. Taken from my Quotev story

Kopaka x Vella: Curiosity (LEGO Bionicle)

Perched atop the blossoming fruit trees, Vella watched Kopaka meditating by a river. The Toa were unlike any Matoran nor human she'd seen but they were open, honest, with nary a secret to tell. However, the way the Toa of Ice carried himself made her curious. He rarely spoke, expressed his emotions even less. 

If only he came with a manual, she pondered silently. 

"You might want to be mindful of your balance." 

The human woman nearly fell off the branch in shock. How did he even know she was there?

Toa of few words, yet filled with many surprises!

Lloyd Garmadon x Odette Manuku: Lies (LEGO Ninjago)

"Was it all a lie?"

Odette inhaled deeply at Lloyd's question refusing to look at those emerald eyes she'd come to love. After everything that happened, she couldn't risk angering Harumi. Not while her sister's life hung on a string. So she nodded back. 

Lloyd turned away in disgust. He knew not to trust that liar! He was a such a fool! Odette lowered her head in shame and held back tears. Even when he was whisked away by the guards to prepare for the ritual, she refused to cry until she returned to the cold solace of her room.

Sonic x Noelani: Swimming Lessons (Sonic the Hedgehog)

"Come on it is not that deep!" Noelani's accent thickened with growing irritation. 

Sonic peered into the water, his usual confidence quickly becoming undone by anxiety. Travelling in aquatic environments didn't automatically cure childhood phobias. 

"Unless you're scaredy-hog?" She teased, grinning slyly. The nomad shook his head in offense. 

"Hmph, as if!" Him? A guy who can take down whole fleets of badniks? Afraid? Well except Amy's mallet but that's beside the point. Throwing away his inhibitions he jumped into the water-

- and proceeded to freak out!

With a groan Noelani stepped into the kiddie pool to pull him out.

Jason Whittaker x Vanessa Marbles: Costume Party (Adventures in Odyssey)

"We come to suck your blood," Vanessa announced flashing a fanged smile as she and Jason strolled into the decorated lobby, dressed up as a vampire and Frankenstein's monster respectively. 

"Cool costumes," Princess Connie greeted them. She noticed the yellow bundle in Jason's arms. "And what's Junior supposed to be?"

The ex-spy grinned cheekily. "He's our little minion!" He held up his baby boy, who looked bewildered at his surroundings. "Of all the monsters on Earth you picked those ridiculous Minions?" Connie asked incredulously. 

"Ah come on he's a baby he probably won't remember this! Well I hope he doesn't."

Leonardo x Kaysha Wallace: Reunion (TMNT 2007) 

"I can't believe you started the party without me," Kaysha beamed excitedly. 

"Does it look like we're having fun?"  Leo shouted back as he evaded a punch and landed one of his own. The pink kunoichi chuckled before leaping out of the way to avoid metal to the face. Turtle and human boxed and weaved, avoiding every strike before coming together back to back. 

"I think this what Mikey refers to as old times," Leo remarked, unsheathing katanas. 

"I was gonna see you myself," she added gripping her matching blade. "I missed you."

Leo's heart melted. "I missed you too."

Bruce Wayne x Nicola Holden: Hostage Situation

Bruce analyzed the criminals forcing gala patrons to place money and other items into their bags. 

"Should we try to find an escape or wait for one of the Robins?" Cola whispered in his ear. He raised a brow. "One of?"

"I mean we have like five, I can't keep up with all of them!"

"I guess age is keeping up with you," he teased, an admittedly poor attempt to lighten the mood. 

"Hey! You two shut up!" 

Cola's fingers twitched on instinct to grab a batarang but relented when she felt a warm hand caressing hers. Be patient, love. 

Adult!Jora x Ben 10,000: The Ex (Ben 10 Original Series)

The cafe fell silent as the patrons gaped at the new customer. Noticing this, Jora peeked out from the cook's window, only to squeak and shrink back when she saw just who entered. Sitting at the counter with an awkward expression on his face, was none other than Ben Ten-Thousand. Her childhood friend, her teenage crush, and her ex. 

The hell he came here for?! Did Gwen spill the beans about where she worked? The last thing she needed was seeing the man who callously stomped on her heart. She bit her lip remembering their argument, his attitude, her tears. 

Axel Manning x Rosslyn Smith: Viewing (Alpha Teens On Machines) 

Rosslyn peered from her magazine taking a good look at Axel's abs while he trained by the outdoor pool She might spend her days behind a desk but she had fantasies too! And right now, all she wanted was to feel every ounce of smooth muscle of the martial arts prodigy. 

"Enjoying the view?" Her friend Lioness broke her out of her hormonal thoughts. Her face heated up in embarrassment. 

"No," the med student sputtered. "I was just....studying his moves that's all! So I could try them out on my own!" Lioness smirked and shook her head in amusement.

A scene from my AU where instead of Harumi, Lloyd falls in love with her decoy&handmaiden Odette. This scene is after the ninja stop the ritual and free Lloyd and Misako - with help from a regretful Odette - and the SoG are taken into custody.

Contrast the original scene, Odette wants to talk to Lloyd about how she was pretty much forced to join the gang. But he's far too heartbroken and angry to listen.

I can imagine Harumi patting herself on the back if she weren't handcuffed over successfully hurting Lloyd in such a way and punishing her "friend" for daring to betray her for the Ninja

💡 + Odette?

Odette is the OC that I'm still having trouble getting her story & she's been through the most changes. But in short it's the same reasons why I made Jo: to add another girl to the main cast in a show primarily marketed to boys.

As well as to give Lloyd a love interest who genuinely cares about him and his friends Harumi

In the narrative Odette serves a foil for Lloyd's previous love interest, Princess Harumi, so everything she was Odette is not. In the latter's case her "debut" and subsequent appearances has her as a detached, rough-edged snarker. But her negativity masks a scared girl mourning her lost childhood and desperately wants to be free from her abusive Aunt.

I'm still debating whether to give her powers or not. Originally she was going to have Love/Heart & Soul as her Element but recently I've been toying with the idea of her being a ninja with no powers whatsoever since we haven't seen a non-powered ninja character in Ninjago. But I might end up going with the Love/Soul idea since her element is spiritual to contrast with thr ninja's more natural & physical elements. Plus an aloof character having powers literally emotional lends to a LOT of fun ideas XD

As for her title she wears pink to stand out from the other canon so she's called the Pink Ninja or Royal Ninja due to her working for the Emperor's current successor in the near future!

Design notes I made + Tutorial

I analyzed a blank figurine/template and sketch out basic shapes: square for head, rectangle for neck, waist and legs, and trapezoid for torso

Arms come in four parts: rounder triangle for shoulder/biceps, curvy rectangle for lower arms, square for wrists, and crescents for hands

After sketching I go back in and add curves to the corner of the head to make it more close to a real figurine, and combine all the pieces into one form

USE REFERENCES!!!!

Ex. I used the actual Kimono Woman to sketch a design for Odie's own formal gown

5. For Hair analyze the shape of a hair piece. What do they remind you of?

The one on the right looks more rounder so your "hair piece" should have a circular base. The one on the right looks boxy so a square/rectangle is your best bet. It doesn't have to look detailed. Since Odette has two main hairstyle I used both pieces as references.

They also have the shade of brown I always picture her to have!

6. Again always have a ref on hand for faces. You can combine features to customize!

Odette has thin eyebrows like the figure on the left, and the lips and eye shapes of the right. She doesn't have the mole and her skin color is much darker (which is what I use standard dollmakers for).

That's about all I have for now. I'll be making a separate post on clothing designs and decals. I hope this provides useful tips for anyone who wishes to make their own Ninjago OC!

Odette's spin off is bascially if Ninjago was more respectful of Asian & Pacific Islander cultures.

Don't get me wrong I love the show but it really needs to do better with actually representing the cultures and customs. Which is why I'm going to focus on redeveloping the cultural aspects to be more accurate to real world.

Another thing is Ninjago needs to give us better written female characters that aren't reduced to being love interests. Which is why Odette, despite being the master of Love and paired with Lloyd doesn't have a storyline revolving around romance of any kind.

The romantic subplots in Ninjago tends to suck, except for the Llorumi one which isn't really setting a high bar. So I promise once I get to Odette she will have her own character arc that doesn't solely revolve around getting a guy. Her and Lloyd will have awesome and awkward chemistry and the romance will be DEVELOPED and crucial to both characters and not just treated as an afterthought.

Oh and they don't fall in love the first time they meet.

Odette's fan season starts a bit after the Ninja enter the ice realm and continues into season thirteen. So for the most part she is still a civilian and starts training around the end of 12.

Her dynamic with Cole will serve an important role as he becomes sort of a big brother to her. Plus they bond over their lost mothers and wanting to know more about what happened to them
